The fair, which was first held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 and canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “This event is a chance for the community to get behind a good cause,” said WSMC youth pastor Eric Herr. “As for the trip, I always get really excited to see the youth encounter God in a new way.” All auction proceeds will be used to give local high school students the opportunity to serve and make an impact during their mission trip this summer. From Wednesday, July 6, to Wednesday, July 20, 18 high school students and five church leaders will join missionaries in the mountains of Nepal, where Hinduism is the dominant religion. “There are people out there who have never heard the Gospel before, so this mission trip is a really special opportunity to reach these villages and share the Word of Jesus with them,” explained Herr. Those who are interested in donating items to the auction must contact Herr at pastorerichill@gmail.com by Wednesday, April 20. Individuals can drop off their donated auction items at the church any time before 8 p.m. on Friday, April 22. Herr invites those who don’t have a home church or would like to learn more about WSMC to attend Sunday worship services. On Sundays, people can enjoy coffee and fellowship from 8 to 9 a.m., attend Sunday school at 9 a.m., and join the worship service at 10:15 a.m. For more information, visit www.willowstreet mennonite.com.

Once every two years, students in the youth ministry at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC) go on a foreign mission trip during the summer. To fund these trips, the church typically hosts a benefit auction; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has not been an auction since April 2018. Well, that’s about to change. The public is invited to

attend WSMC’s benefit auction, which will take place at the church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. so people can preview the items and get their bidding numbers. A concession stand will sell lunch food throughout the day, and Curvin Horning and Gary Shirk will serve as the auctioneers. Some items up for bids include handmade quilts, décor,

Kimmel Tallies 100th Career Lacrosse Goal BY MONA STEINHAUER

game-high six assists, added two goals and Chase Barber scored once. The Pioneers put up their first shutout of the year in a 14-0 result against LCD/LCHS on April 4. Denlinger racked up five more goals while McClain (2a) and Sullivan (1a) each tallied three. Labreque (2a) chipped in with two and Filius added one. Two days later, they held off CV, 9-7. McClain’s four goals were a game high. TRACK Maggie Swarr won the shot, discus, and javelin, a Swarr sweep, to spark L-S to a 96-54 win over visiting Elizabethtown on April 4. The Pioneers went 1-2-3 in the 400 (Madison Weichler, Olivia Magagna, Mikayla Coe), the 300 hurdles (Madison Malcolm, Elly Bruner, Natalie Holland) and the long jump (Bruner, Sabrina Phillips, Anya Myers). Lyndi Wall doubled in the 100 and 200, Alexis Moran took the triple and high and Malcolm added high hurdles win for another double. The boys dominated with a 101-49 result. Teagan Weaver continues to dominate, winning the long and triple jumps and the 100 and 200 sprints to lead the scoring. Other multi-event winners included Zach Mulron in the

hurdles and Colin Whitaker who ran away in the mile and 3200. Race of the day went to Luka Vranich who came from behind in the 4x400 to pull off an L-S victory. Aidan Black, Eric Doutrich and Mulron ran the first three legs. TENNIS On Thursday, March 31, the Pioneers dropped a 3-2 non-league loss to Lancaster Catholic and five days later suffered the exact same result in a hard-luck loss to Pequea Valley. It was their third onepoint loss in four outings. Against the Crusaders, Spencer and Cole Teaman put together a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Kyle Pawson and Joe Fitzgerald grabbed Lampeter’s second point, winning 6-1, 6-1. Catholic battled to take all three singles matches. Matt DeBord outlasted Andrew Reidenbaugh 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 2 and Jack Harnish almost made it to three sets, falling short 7-6 in the second set against Connor Ott at No. 3. After splitting doubles play against the Braves, Weston Weaver worked a solid 6-4, 6-2 No. 1 win but S. Teaman lost in straight sets with C. Teaman putting up a fight in a 7-5, 6-3 defeat. Chad Royer and Joe Fitzgerald teamed for a 7-6, 6-3

thriller at No. 2 doubles. SOFTBALL The softball team, after a tight 1-0 thriller over CV, pounded out 16 hits and scored 15 runs against visiting Lebanon Friday, April 1. Keiva Middleton’s no hitter featured eight strikeouts. Julia Gerard (2 doubles) and Ally Raub each had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Brooke Zuber, Middleton, Gabby Hiles and Maura Savoca also connected for two hits each with Savoca and Zuber combining for five RBIs. L-S connected for six straight doubles midway through the third inning and finished with 11 hits that frame to break open a 3-0 lead with 12 runs scored. Three days later, the Pioneers fell to 2-1 in Section Two with a 4-3 heartbreaker against visiting Elizabethtown. L-S recorded two more hits than the Bears, and Middleton fanned 12 batters against two walks, but it wasn’t enough. “I’m disappointed because I think we are a better team,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “Mackenzie Maki hit a ball to the fence that had a chance for a two-run homer so it’s a game of inches. Plus, we’re young and developing a new outfield. I do like our fight.”

With 20:34 left in the first half, and L-S already up 2-0, Rowan Kimmel tallied her 100th career goal and the Pioneers were off and running. Kimmel poured in four more goals and dished out a team high three assists as L-S thumped Lancaster Country Day/ Lancaster Catholic 22-4. The Pioneers led 12-3 at the half. Hannah Gawne (2a) and Ryann Logan (1a) both scored four goals each with Hanna Cissne (1a) adding three. Emaly Garrett and Leigh Saurbaugh (1a) both scored twice with Kelly Hostetter (2a) and Abbi Welchans (1a) adding one goal each. Kimmel racked up six goals and one assist as the Pioneers distanced themselves from Cocalico with an 11-3 second half domination in a 19-9 victory Thursday, March 31. “We haven’t beaten them in the last four years,” said photo by Mona Steinhauer In a 22-4 home victory over LCD/LCHS last Tuesday, Hanna Krebs. Gerard’s groundout scored Chloe Meck, who cracked a lead-off double in the third, cutting the lead to 3-1. After giving up a run in the fifth, Middleton’s two-run homer plated Raub, who singled, and capped the scoring. BASEBALL The baseball team scored first and last in a 7-6 thriller at Lebanon Friday, April 1. Isaiah Parido’s two-run homer gave L-S an early boost while a single by Gehrig Harsh pushed in Andrew Whitehead, who reached on a two out double, for the gamewinner. In between, it was back-andforth. Lebanon took a 4-2 lead on three hits, a walk and two errors in the bottom of the first but L-S came back with two in the second and tied the game at 5-5 in the third. Both teams scored single runs in the fifth, and did not score in the sixth, setting the stage for Lampeter’s offensive heroics. ed his fourth strikeout in relief to seal the deal. “A big part of the game was Hayden throwing 2.1 innings of shutout relief to earn the win,” said head coach Jeff Swarr. Jason Long started on the hill, giving up seven hits and six runs with five strikeouts and three walks. Peyton Harsh, Jason Long and G. Harsh each collected two hits to fuel Lampeter’s ten hit attack. Last Monday, April 4, L-S put together another 10-hit effort in an 11-0 shutout over Elizabethtown. “We had contributions up and down the lineup,” said Swarr. “Gio Malatesta walked three times and scored three runs. Peyton also walked twice, scored twice, and hit a double. Jason had two hits and two RBIs. Gehrig was solid on the mount and helped his cause with two hits. Tanner Groff had two hits and two RBIs and Brayden Adams had a hit, got hit by a pitch and scored twice.”

begin quizzing as seventhgraders and continue until they turn 20 years old as of Jan. 1. Under the leadership of coaches, participants study a predetermined portion of Scripture and attend 15-question quiz matches from January to March. A regular Bible quiz season lasts for eight weeks and concludes with a local tournament and a tournament where teams from other states compete. Each match is facilitated by volunteers who serve as quiz masters, judges, scorekeepers, and timekeepers. According to AMEC’s website, “the ultimate goal of Bible Quizzing is to cultivate biblically literate believers who appreciate and revere God’s Word.” This year, Bible quizzers studied, memorized, and were tested on the lives of Job, Joshua, Nehemiah, Jonah, and Zechariah. Strasburg Mennonite Church, which is located at 1514 Village Road, Strasburg, had three teams with a total of 17 quizzers. Strasburg Team 1 consisted of Madison Landis, Zoe Landis, Wesley Leaman, Ashley Ranck, and Owen Hostetter; Strasburg Team 2 featured Mary Hostetter, Magdalana Leaman, Greta Leaman, Ashton Landis, Megan Ranck, and Owen Hostetter; and Strasburg Team 3 consisted of Zach Landis, Grace Trout, Logan Martin, Emerson Westfall, Truman Horst, and Riley Martin. “There are a lot of benefits to quizzing,” explained Amanda Trout, coach of Strasburg Team 3. “There’s the social aspect of connecting with youths who have similar values, and they learn a lot of skills, like public speaking and how to quiz in front of an audience.” The AMEC Invitational Tournament was the last tournament of the season and

Inviting the community to Cruisin’ for Ukraine are members of the Lancaster County Cruisers. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Like many people, Bob Rudy watched the events unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to help. “I wanted to fly over there and carry children and pets to safety,” he recalled saying to his wife, Debra, while watching the news one evening. “This obviously wasn’t a brilliant deci-

idea, he knew he needed help to make it happen. “Putting a car show together isn’t something an individual can do,” he noted, adding that he recruited his fellow members of a local car club to help. “I couldn’t possibly do it without my brothers and sisters in the Lancaster County Cruisers.” Registration for the show will be by donation and will take place at the event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and dash plaques will be given to the first 200 vehicles registered. More than 30 trophies will be awarded in the “Anything on Wheels” category, based on the highest amount of donations submitted, and all proceeds will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee to help the people of Ukraine. including pedal cars or Power Wheels. Family pets will also be included in the festivities, with trophies for the three highest donations in both the kids’ and pet categories. The J.C. Fisher Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The presentation of trophies will take place at 2 p.m. Rudy acknowledged the support of Root’s Market for allowing the event to take place on-site and noted that a variety of the market’s vendors will be available during the show. Rudy encouraged participants to show their support for the Ukrainian people by displaying flags, signs and banners. An additional trophy will be awarded for the entry that shows the most support. Acknowledging the help he’s received in putting together a big event in a short amount of time, Rudy recalled evidence of divine intervention. He connected with someone on Facebook who was giving away trophies, which Rudy plans to retrofit for this event. On his way to pick them up in Maryland, he passed a church. “It was so beautiful and at first, I thought it was a mosque,” he remembered. “Then I saw the sign. It was the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. That was another sign to me that I was doing the right thing in organizing the car show.” In the event of rain, the show will be postponed to Saturday, April 30, and information will be posted on the Cruisin’ for Ukraine Facebook page as well as on Rudy’s internet radio station at www.mypetradio.com. For more information on the event, email cruisinfor ukraine@gmail.com.
