Say the word “gala” and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-double-digits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “We want it to be affordable,” said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too.” Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light” this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted. See Grand Purple Gala pg 2

When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. The proceeds from the Grand Purple Gala will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by way of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The tagline of the signature fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association is “lead the way to Alzheimer’s first survivor. Currently, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to www.alz.org. The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact, Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease. Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process, Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Folks may buy tickets in advance for a discount by visiting https://717 events.ticketspice.com/the-grand -purple-gala, or they may pay full price at the door. For more information, readers may contact Frazier at 717-587-2209 or leeny626@aol.com or find “The Grand Purple Gala on Facebook.

Hope program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs, explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit. In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing, said Hoffer. He is also planning to offer table games some night. “Sunday Night on Main” is guaranteed to run through all of May, but the steering committee would like it to continue into June and beyond, Brody said. He and Higgins hope that the nontraditional time and format will attract folks who might not otherwise attend a worship service. Higgins indicated that if attendance is strong, New Providence Mennonite’s sanctuary will be reconfigured so that the meal can be held in that space. Currently, only the sanctuary is handicapped-accessible; the ground floor is not. For more information about “Sunday Night on Main,” folks may find the Facebook page or call Brody at 717-872-8111.

with New Providence Mennonite Church pastor William Higgins to lead the new venture, which steering committee member Eric Warfel dubbed “Sunday Night on Main.” “The premise is based on three M’s: meal, music, and message,” Brody explained. “We believe Jesus spoke to people around a meal, and that’s important.” “Sunday Night on Main” has been loosely patterned off a church in Washington state. Dawn Warfel, who is part of the steering committee and a member of the worship team, described the music as acoustic and intimate. The service is anticipated to conclude by 7:30 p.m. Brody and Higgins are slated to take turns giving the messages, although Dawn will share on Mother’s Day, May 12. Brody will speak at the kickoff event, which will take place on May 5. He plans to lay out the vision for “Sunday Night on Main” and look at examples of meal-inclusive fellowship and learning in the Bible. “We want this to be a place for the community to come together and fellowship, to feel the love of Jesus and other people, and grow together,” Dawn said. “We’re specifically trying to reach the Quarryville area,” Brody added. “There’s a desire for spirituality. We want people to know people and be known … to feel a part (of things) and connect (with God and others). We’re trying to understand the Southern End and (find out) where we can be to help out.” Members of both hosting congregations are planning to participate in “Sunday Night on Main,” but Higgins noted that he and Brody are working on developing leaders who are not part of either congregation. The Warfels are one such couple. Dawn noted that she and Eric had been visiting area churches, looking for the right place to belong. “We love to serve and get out

nurses’ careers. To be successful, the LCNHG will need a commitment from several dozen people. Individuals will need to be able to cover morning, afternoon, or evening services on weekdays and weekends. There will be no cost for the tribute service. “We are recognizing the sacrifice the family made by the person being a nurse,” Sweigart said. The women noted that with the numerous retirement homes and the presence of several nursing schools, the population of current or former nurses in Lancaster County is quite high. Thus, they believe it makes sense to form an honor guard. Thankfully, interest in the guard has been relatively high, with just over 30 people having indicated that they plan to attend the meeting. Additional folks are welcome and should register by emailing lancastercountynursehonorguard@gmail.com. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the guard may send an email to request ongoing updates on the organization. The organizers anticipate meeting again in two months, with hope to have the guard up and running by the beginning of September. There will be costs associated with the guard. Members must provide their own white uniform, but the LCNHG will purchase capes that will be shared among the members, as well as flowers, chimes, and lanterns for the displays. Sponsorships are available to cover the guard’s costs, which will eventually include the fee to apply for nonprofit status. To learn more, folks may send an email to the aforementioned address.

Banzhof replied, “Let’s try.” That was earlier this year. The two have co-founded the Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard (LCNHG) by setting a tentative framework in place. Before making anything final, however, they would like to have the input of current or retired nurses - registered (RN) or licensed practical (LPN) - in good standing. Sweigart and Banzhof will host an organizational meeting at Lyndon City Line Diner, 1370 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. “Incidentally, that happens to be Nurses’ Day,” Banzhof pointed out. During the meeting, Banzhof will give a presentation about the purpose of the guard and how it will be utilized, as well as what she and Sweigart have come up with to carry out its function. “We have some thoughts, but we’re open to input from more people,” Sweigart remarked. Banzhof and Sweigart have patterned the LCNHG off a similar organization in Michigan. They noted that the guard in that state is active and a good resource for guards in other states. The idea behind the LCNHG is that just as nurses served within a community during life, they should be honored by their colleagues at their death. Based on what they have seen other guards do, Sweigart and Banzhof have created a short ritual of remembrance that may be used at funerals or memorial services. They imagine a group of three or four LCNHG members wearing white uniforms and red-lined blue capes conducting a tribute that will include the reading of a poem, the chiming of a bell to signal the release from duty, and the presentation of a white rose. Once finalized, information about the tribute and the LCNHG will be distributed to all the funeral directors in Lancaster County. The services can be individualized depending on the deceased’s family’s wishes. The LCNHG will help families create tables of remembrance to represent late

Pioneers Pick Up 3 More Wins, Now 12-0 by Mona Steinhauer
Playing three games in four days last week, Lampeter-Strasburg’s girls’ softball team scored a total of 31 runs on 40 hits and came away with three wins, topping Penn Manor and Hempfield in crossover action before defeating Twin Valley. In all three games, the Pioneers had to battle back from a deficit. Monday the girls not only faced Penn Manor but strong winds as well. The 20-17 victory featured a combined 31 hits, 23 walks and four home runs. “The wind was blowing directly out to left center and the pitchers were
throwing in a crosswind,” said head coach Gene Charles. “If you hit one up in the air, it was an adventure.” After fighting off a 4-1 first inning deficit, L-S looked to take control with a six run fourth and picked up four more runs in the fifth. “We had a 15-4 lead after 5.5 innings and were two outs from 10-running them,” Charles recalled. The Comets, however, came alive with four runs in the bottom half and, after L-S scored twice in the top of the sixth, exploded for nine runs and tied the score at 17-17. “We had two of our five errors that inning,” said Charles. “We needed to play in pressure situations. It will only
help us down the road. I was proud that we battled back. Brynne Baker’s two run double was the big hit after they tied the game.” Baker, with three strikeouts and six walks, started in the circle, Gabby Drumm came on in the sixth, striking out one and walking two to get the win while Keiva Middleton, with one walk, got the save. Cam Byler and Daisy Frank both went 3-4 with a double and solo home runs. Emily Platt (2-6) and Jocelyn Branco (2-3) added three RBI’s each and Julz Garber was 2-4 with four runs scored. “Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit, one RBI and scored on run,” Charles said. Wednesday afternoon the Pioneers
traveled to Hempfield, the second place team in Section One and got caught in a back-and-forth outing that eventually resulted in a 7-6 victory. Baker’s two run homer in the first sparked a 3-2 lead at the end of one. Hempfield knotted the score at 3-3 by the bottom of the second only to see L-S go up one in the top of the third. Again the Knights responded only time taking a 5-4 lead after three complete. Baker came up with another clutch hit, a three run round tripper in the top of the fourth, pushing the lead to 7-5, and L-S held on for the win. “They had a home run to cut it to 7-6 but both teams settled down over the final three innings,” noted Charles. “We did turn a double play in
the fifth inning, probably our eighth of the season. “Brynn definitely sparked the offense going 2-4 with five RBI’s and Byler was 3-4,” he continued. “And Chloe Blantz played a phenomenal game at short.” In a rematch of last year’s district title game, the Pioneers hosted Twin Valley and finished on top 4-2. Tied at 2-2 after three complete innings, L-S scored two in the bottom of the fourth to cap the scoring. Garber crushed a full count triple to start the inning and scored on a Summer Peters base hit. Blantz doubled in Peters (2-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored) for the final run of the game. “They didn’t throw Marsalo, who we saw last year, until late in the game,” Charles pointed out. “Brynn
settled down over the last four innings and they hit a lot of ground balls. She seemed to have more movement on the ball as the game went on. “We just keep plugging along,” Charles added. “Taking things one game at a time.” GIRLS LACROSSE In their only game of the week, the girls’ lacrosse team sprinted to an 11-0 first half lead and cruised to a very lopsided 19-1 verdict over visiting Red Lion Wednesday night. The win improves the Pioneers to 9-3 overall. In league play they sit in third place at 5-2 behind Hempfield and Manheim Township, both 8-0, and Cocalico, 7-1. Two days later the Pioneers hosted Section One leader Hempfield (9-1, 11-2 overall) and came away with their third shutout of the season. Karpathios picked up the win on the hill with 10 strikeouts and two walks and scattered three hits. Dylan Byler gave up one hit and fanned five batters over the final two innings. Clinging to a one run lead in the second inning, L-S broke the game open with a five run third frame and gave up just three hits over the final four innings. Taso Kovack and Joe Meck opened the inning with back-toback doubles. Shockey’s base hit plated both runners and pushed the lead to 3-0. Nevin Book (1-1, 1 run scored), who reached with a lead off base hit, scored the game winner on a two out, wild pitch.
