The latest devices purchased by the Friends of the Force for the West Lampeter Township Police Department (WLTPD) are real stunners. Technically, they are known as Axon electronic control devices (ECDs), but they are more regularly known as Tasers. For the price of nearly $30,000, the Friends purchased 15 ECDs, holsters, and battery packs. A total of 45 training cartridges and a supply of duty cartridges also came with the order. The department has a five-year contract with Axon, during which the company will replace batteries and deployed cartridges at no additional cost. At the end of that period, the WLTPD will own the ECDs outright. “ We’re so fortunate to have the Friends step in and pay once-anddone,” said WLTPD Chief Brian
Wiczkowski, noting that some departments have to spread the cost out over the life of the contract. Each WLTPD member has been educated on how to use the ECDs. WLTPD Officer Shawn Powell is a certified instructor, so he trained his colleagues on the practical and policy-related aspects of using the devices. Everyone on staff will be trained annually. Part of training includes receiving a charge from an ECD. “This is a serious weapon,” Sgt. Jeremy Schroeder said. “After being tased, we have a healthy respect for it and what it’s capable of.” Although the devices were recently deployed, their purchase has been in the works for several years. Wiczkowski related that when he joined the WLTPD nearly five years ago, adding ECDs to the force’s arsenal of defense tools was See Friends Of The Force pg 12

Additionally, Longwood Gardens has provided the library with several copies of “The Triumph of Seeds,” which was published in 2015. “Seedfolks” is the Community Read book for middle-grade readers. Written by Paul Fleischman, “Seedfolks” tells the story of how the simple act of a 9-year-old girl planting lima bean seeds sparks 13 individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and age levels to come together to create a community garden. “The Reason for a Flower” by Ruth Heller is the Community Read book for the youngest readers. In this book about flowers, pollen, and seeds, Heller introduces young readers to parts of plants and their functions in a rhythmic style. The Strasburg-Heisler Library is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration for the May 18 event is required, as space is limited. Folks may register at www.strasburglibrary.org/events or by calling the library 717687-8969.

Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, is participating in the Longwood Garden Community Read, a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and to start conversations. This year, the journey will continue into the science of the plant world by focusing on seeds. On Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m., interested individuals are invited to join Matthew Ross, director of continuing education at Longwood Gardens, as he presents a lecture and hands-on workshop based on the concepts of the Longwood Gardens Community Read 2019 book selection, “The Triumph of Seeds: How Grains, Nuts, Kernels, Pulses, and Pips Conquered the Plant Kingdom and Shaped Human History” by award-winning author Thor Hanson. The wide range of seeds used today will be examined in the interactive program. Topics covered will include the processing and storage of seeds, as well as their use in planting, cooking, and jewelry. A limited number of family passes to Longwood Gardens and several different types of seeds will be given away during the program.

The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) FFA Chapter members will host the seventh annual LCCTC FFA Fun Fair on Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Campus of the LCCTC, 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The event will be held rain or shine. The Fun Fair is open to the public, and there will be something for everyone. The petting zoo is free and will have a variety of farm animals, which may include calves, sheep, alpacas, rabbits, and others. Other activities will be available for a small fee, such as a dime pitch; face painting; an opportunity to sit in a big rig truck; pony rides, weather permitting; and other games. The culinary class will have food and beverages available for purchase, and Farm Show milkshakes will be for sale as well. Vendors will also have stands at the event. Vendors with an informative stand or small business stand are welcome to participate. Items such as themed baskets, gift certificates, and other items will be available via giveaway drawings. Additionally, a giveaway drawing for a chance to win a 2019 Kubota SideKick RTV-XG850 or a cash prize will be available in conjunction with the Pennsylvania FFA Foundation. Tickets may be purchased at the LCCTC FFA Fun Fair or at www.paffa.org/foundation. Those who purchase tickets
online are asked to select Lancaster County CTC FFA to give the chapter credit for the sale, as the chapter will receive a monetary donation per ticket sold. The winner will be notified on Thursday, July 18, at the Pennsylvania FFA Foundation Golf Tournament; the winner does not need to be present. All LCCTC FFA members are in the animal production science and technology class. The students have been taking leadership roles in planning the activities and organizing the event. The LCCTC FFA Fun Fair was created by charter-year members to raise awareness of FFA and their class. Proceeds will benefit LCCTC student organizations. The FFA members are also running a blanket drive in support of Blankets4Zane to collect new store-bought or newly handmade blankets to benefit children in hospitals. Readers may visit http://blankets4zane.org/ for more information. For details about attending the event, making a donation, or being a vendor, readers may contact LCCTC FFA adviser Lori Hess at 717-464-7067 or lhess@lancasterctc.edu. Their sense of songwriting and storytelling puts a fresh twist on the more engrained and traditional aspects of the folk genre.” Knauss will be followed by the musical trio of David Wilson of Bailey Run, Steve Davis, and Lynn Royer. Wilson has opened for national artists such as Kansas, Tim Reynolds’ TR3, Bess Rogers, Doug Paisley, Sister Hazel, and Sonia Leigh, among others. are available for purchase by those who wish to support the race without competing. Ryan’s Race is sponsored and coordinated by the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Varsity Club. Ryan’s Race is run in honor of Ryan “Whitey” Weitzel, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer as an eighth-grader. Though he was initially given as little as six months to live, Ryan fought for good health through his senior year of high school. He continued to work hard in classes, play lacrosse, build up others, and inspire all who knew him, but he passed away in the spring of 2008, just shy of graduation. The race in his honor was established by his classmates shortly after his death. “Today’s seniors were kindergartners when the race began,” said Varsity Club adviser Joseph Sloss. “They didn’t know Ryan, but the story of his remarkable character and spirit endures. We are proud to hold the race and to provide scholarships in his name.” The boys’ lacrosse program continues to celebrate Ryan’s spirit of positivity and sportsmanship. His jersey number, 22, is a reminder of the ideals to which all players should aspire. Along with Penn Manor High School’s team, the L-S lacrosse team honors Ryan’s legacy at the annual Backyard Bash/Whitey Game, which was held this year on May 7. Money raised from Ryan’s Race is used to provide scholarships to deserving L-S seniors who reflect Ryan’s character and attitude. Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year at the senior awards ceremony. The 2018 recipients were Joshua Strauss and Rachel Marcroft. The name of the event might be Gyrofest, but the anticipated star of the show at the sixth annual event on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, will be loukoumades. “They’re the most sought-after item at the Greek Bazaar (held in the fall),” said Gyrofest co-chair George Soukas. “They’re crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. We serve them the traditional way. They’ll be freshly fried and drizzled with spiced honey.”

Loukoumades are double-leavened, with both baking powder and fresh yeast creating pockets of air within the dough structure. The sweet glaze on the exterior is what has given loukoumades the colloquial names of “honey balls” or “honey puffs.” They are also known as “honey tokens” because of their history. Soukas related that loukoumades were awarded to athletes at the ancient Olympic Games. Olive oil, honey, and gold were coveted items, and as loukoumades contained the first two, only the rich could enjoy them. Soukas related that 8,000 loukoumades were sold at last year’s bazaar, and he and his cochair, Manny Firoglanis, are planning to sell 4,000 of the pastries at Gyrofest this year. The honey balls will be available by the piece. Other treats offered at the festival will include Greek coffee and frappes, baklava and baklava sundaes, butter cookies called koulourakia, and rice pudding, which will be sold with or without cinnamon in 4-ounce and 8-ounce containers. “Cinnamon is a very Greek spice,” Soukas remarked. The main dish at Gyrofest, a pita filled with meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce, will be sold in a platter with Greek fries and a salad. The organizers are expecting

to sell 3,000 platters. “It’s been a really good event for us,” Soukas commented. “It invites contact with the community and gets our people together to work toward a common goal.” In a nod to Mother’s Day, which will be observed on the day following Gyrofest, event marketer E.J. Schrott coined the phrase “Your mother’s a hero: Buy her a gyro.” Tickets for the platters may be purchased for a discount at www.annunciationorthodox.org/ gyrofest or for full price at the event. members to attend state and national conventions and other educational events. The committee reported that approximately 25 students will compete in teams and several individuals will participate as delegates or state officer candidates at the State FFA Convention at Penn State University in June. Typically, the chapter pays for some of the costs, and the individual members pay for the rest, Chalfant said. Interest in planning for the car show has increased significantly, going from a committee of only three last year to more than 20 this year. Some folks were in charge of writing sponsor letters, while others worked on ordering T-shirts and redesigning the layout of the event. “We’re trying to expand and make it better,” committee member Cody Hurlburt said. All the committee members are slated to wear mint green staff T-shirts at the event, and folks who need assistance may query any of the staffers. Although it is too late for business and individual names to be included on the event T-shirts, sponsorships for the event are still available. ADVERTISER - Lampeter-Strasburg Edition three more in the sixth. Multi-hit leaders of the day included Byler (3-3, 1RBI), Alex Knapp (2-4, 3RBI) and Meck (2-4). On the mound, Doug Schneider (5 innings), Guyer and Brandon Miller all struck out three batters. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ lacrosse team put up mixed results last week as the regular season soon comes to a close. The boys went up against Section Two leader Ephrata last Tuesday but couldn’t pull off the upset. The Mounts held a 4-1 lead in the first quarter en route to a strong 14-2 finish. They defeated the Pioneers 12-5 back on April 5. The Mounts doubled Lampeter’s 24 shots on goal and had five players reach the scoring column. Connor Nolt was credited with both of Lampeter’s tallies and Noah Davis added one assist. In goal, Dominic Reed recorded 14 saves. On the road again Thursday, the Pioneers traveled to Conrad Weiser for
a non-league matchup and improved to 9-7 overall with a convincing 11-2 victory. L-S outscored their hosts in every quarter and extended their 5-1 first half effort with a 4-1 third quarter and blanked CW 2-0 down the stretch. The Pioneers, with 35 shots on goal, were led in scoring by Stewart McClain’s five goal effort. Noah Patterson chipped in with four goals and dished out a game-high three assists. Joey Jordan and Nolt each finished with one goal and one assist. Reed faced 17 shots and finished with 10 saves to earn the win. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Lady Pioneers wrapped up the regular season against two opponents below them in the Section One standings. They opened with a solid 18-4 win at Warwick (4-7 overall) last Monday and then dominated Cedar Crest, also at 4-7 overall, 21-2 in their senior night game on Thursday. The results leave L-S at 12-4 overall and, with an 8-3 league record, they finish fourth in the
standings and will face Manheim Township in the L-L League playoffs. With eight of her team’s 18 goals, Kelsey Kimmel continued to lead the Pioneer offense against the Warriors. The visitors racked up ten first half goals and poured in another eight after the break while holding the hosts to one. McKenna Conklin tallied five goals and dished out an impressive four assists. Riley Dawson was the only other multiple goal scorer with two. Isabella Beiler, Hannah Gawne (1a), and Jeslyn Krebs (2a) added one goal each while Katelyn Smith recorded a hat trick in assists. Kimmel pushed her scoring total to 100 goals, finding the back of the net a game-high seven times against the Falcons. She also dished out three assists. Dawson netted four goals, Conklin added three, with one assist, and Smith (1a) and Kelliann Drummond added two goals each in the lopsided win. Brittney Zameroski, Emma
Gochnauer (1a) and Hayley Phenegar, with her first varsity score, added one goal each. Beiler, Gawne and Kelly Hostetter chipped in with one assist. TRACK The boys’ track team stayed tied for first place with Ephrata (5-1) with a dominating 102-46 victory over Cocalico (4-2) last Monday. Ezra Mellinger and Josiah Zehr each won three events and teamed with Jacob Kopelman and Josh Horst to win the 4x400 relay in 44.4. Mellinger won the 100 (10.8), the 200 (22.1) and long jump (21-11.5) while Zehr was tops in the high hurdles (15.6), the 300’s (41.2) and the pole vault (12-0). David Helms chipped in with top times in the mile (4:57.5) and two mile runs (10-54) as L-S won 11 of the 18 events contested. Jansen Miller’s 2:01.3 in the 800 was Lampeter’s final first on the track. Highlighting the field event winners was Gabe Frederick’s 53-11.75 shot put throw, the League’s top throw of
the season. First place winners in the field included Gabe Frederick with a 53-11.75 in the shot, Alex Stoeffler with a 163-2 in the javelin, Kopelman with a 40-11.5 in the triple jump and Brayden Emmerling, who cleared 5-6 in the high jump. The girls’ team also put up a dominating result over the Eagles, 104.5-45.5. Their 5-1 league mark leaves them in second place behind undefeated Ephrata. Unlike the boys’, Kristin Herr was the only individual multiple event winner as she continued to dominate in the throws, winning the discus (121) and the javelin (135-10). Herr was coming off a personal best, school record and second place finish at the Penn Relays with a 157-6. The girls’ opened the meet with a winning 11.51 in the 4x800 relay set by Sara Boyd, Elizabeth Deardorff, Toby Harnish and Colleen Gilbert and later claimed the 4x400 relay with Micah Gordley, Hannah Schultheis, Kathryn Sigafoos and Gilbert clocking a 4:20.7. Boyd went on to win the 3200 (12:39), Gilbert was tops in the 800 (2:34.2), and Gordley was a winner in the mile (5:36.9).

Other winners included Lauren Gard in the 300 hurdles (48.4), Lindsay Szymanski in the 200 (27.9), Lilly Hoke, who cleared 5-2 in the high jump, and Cameron Coleman with an 8-6 pole vault. The teams also competed in the Ray Geesey Invitational at Dallastown on April 27. “We had two good team efforts for our first ever wins at that meet,” said head coach Cal Esh. The girls’ earned 147.50 points to top the field, and second place Dallastown, 89. The boys’ picked up 101 team points and also held off the hosts with 87 points. Zehr won both hurdle events and cleared a personal best 12-6 to win the pole vault. Herr won the discus and the javelin, and Brenneman won the shot put. Frederick was tops in the shot and discus and Stoeffler took the javelin to complete a sweep in the throws. Kopelman and Alexis Moran were triple jump winners, Gard took the 300 hurdles and Gilbert was first in the 800. “Like any other tool we have, we hope we don’t have to use it,” Wiczkowski added. This latest purchase for the WLTPD has pushed the total of contributions by the Friends of the Force to more than $160,000 in 11 years. “These are the first weapons we bought for the police department,” said Friends president Jim Kulp. “We always help with efficiency and safety.” The Friends of the Force is funded through donations. It sends out a fund drive letter once a year, and it generates interest at National Night Out and the West Lampeter Fair that usually results in contributions. Otherwise, the group does not solicit. “We couldn’t do it without (the community’s) donations,” Kulp commented. “We’re appreciative of that.” To learn more about the Friends or to donate, readers may call Kulp at 717-917-2184, find “Friends of the Force” on Facebook, or visit www.friendsoftheforce.com. on his wish list. Part of his motivation for changing the department’s uniform from the formal Class A to the utilitarian Class B was so that officers could wear their protective vests over their shirts and attach the ECDs to the vests. The next task to complete was revising the department’s use-offorce policy. “ We brought it up-to-date first before purchasing the ECDs,” Wiczkowski said. He described the policy as “extensive” and said it runs 55 pages long. Wiczkowski could not describe specific situations in which an ECD might be deployed, but he noted that the devices are a less-lethal alternative to service weapons. Schroeder shared that “reasonable use of force” is the legal standard. “The more options we have, the better off we will be and the public will be,” Wiczkowski remarked. “It’s a public safety issue.” “It’s something else in the tool chest,” pointed out Friends member Duane Heist.

She also received one last year for an excerpt from her novel “Sunrise.” Lefever and her parents have been invited to attend the National Ceremony in New York City, set to take place at Carnegie Hall in June. The ceremony will honor this year’s Gold Medal winners. Receiving a National Medal places these students’ works within the top 1 percent of all submissions.
