LCAA opens two exhibits for spring season

OnMay 7, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), located at 149 Precision Ave. in Strasburg, opened two exhibits: the spring membership show and “Tall Lady Wearing a Hat,” which features the work of LCAA member Dot Stepanaski. The spring membership show is located in the Kauffman Gallery, and Stepanaski’s work is in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both exhibits will be open until Thursday, June 1, during LCAA’s regular hours, which can be found at www.lcaaonline.org.

The spring membership show includes artwork from a variety of LCAA members. Each member was able to enter up to two pieces of work for the show. The paintings

will be judged, and awards will be given out in both the professional and nonprofessional categories.

Stepanaski named her exhibit after the unofficial title given to her by the community, due to her high stature and signature widebrimmed hat. Stepanaski, who is 6 feet tall, said that she wears the hat to prevent her eyes from straining while she paints. “Sometimes, people don’t even recognize me without my hat,” Stepanaski added. “It’s just how everyone knows me.”

“Tall Lady Wearing a Hat” primarily features paintings of landscapes, but also includes a few portraits of animals. Stepanaski is an avid gardener and loves to be immersed in nature, where she finds rest and inspiration for her work. “It speaks to your soul. I always prefer to be

Revealing the roots of a family tree

For many people, family trees and historical records of ancestors provide a sense of connection to relatives and the journey their family has taken over decades. Despite the accessibility of information in

the modern age, burial records and ancestral documents can prove to be elusive. Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer an Intro to Cemetery Research class to assist those searching for answers to questions posed in their family story.

out in nature,” Stepanaski said.

All of Stepanaski’s paintings are made from pastel paints, and she is a member of the Maryland Pastel Society. Stepanaski said that she prefers to use pastel paints due to the purity of their color. All types of paint utilize the same color pigments, but they are differentiated by the substance that is added to make the paint: oil paint is thick and viscous and watercolor paint is thin and translucent. Pastel paint is distinguishable from other types of paint due to the fact that very little binder is applied to the pigment. “When you apply pastel paint, there’s a quality that is visually exciting because of the way it reflects light,” Stepanaski said.

As a member of the Maryland Pastel Society, Stepanaski gathers with other pastel painters to compete in art shows. The group also holds quarterly meetings, where members discuss pastel painting techniques and watch demonstrations from guest artists.

LCAA will hold a plant sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday, May 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. The plants in the sale will all be donated from LCAA members’ gardens, including many from Stepanaski’s garden. For more information, call 717-687-7061.

Annual wreath-laying ceremony held at Woodward Hill Cemetery

On April 22, the annual wreath laying ceremony to honor James Buchanan was held at the former president’s tomb in Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster. The tradition of laying a fresh wreath of flowers at United States presidents’ tombs each year has been observed for decades and is completed for every individual who has held the office.

The ceremony included remarks from guests such as Assistant Adjutant General of the

Pennsylvania Army National Guard James McCormick, chairman of the Lancaster County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino, Lancaster City Chief of Police Richard Mendez, Nathan Gilchrist III of Masonic Lodge 43, Jean Weglarz of Woodward Hill Cemetery and director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland Patrick Clarke. The event was hosted by LancasterHistory in partnership with Woodward Hill Cemetery, and an invocation and benediction was delivered by Timothy Mentzer of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Many groups provided support for the ceremony, including the Pilot Club of Lancaster, Scouts BSA Troop 58, the Lancaster Fencibles, the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and the 328th Brigade Support Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

“It’s a small and solemn service to bring a wreath to the gravesite and remember that president’s service,” Clarke said. “Not every community has a former president who they can claim as one of their community members. Whether you feel that Buchanan was a good president or a horrible one, he was a Pennsylvanian.”

The date of the ceremony was selected to fall near Buchanan’s date of birth, which is April 23. LancasterHistory first became involved with the event to assist with

the ceremony and tie it into its educational programming, as the organization primarily offers exhibits and tours at Buchanan’s former home in Lancaster.

Many of the groups participate in the ceremony each year because of their direct relation to the former president. Buchanan is considered to be one of the earliest members of Pennsylvania’s National Guard due to his serving as a militia member in the War of 1812. Due to this connection, for the annual service the Pennsylvania National Guard provides soldiers to perform color guard duties, raise a new American flag and speak on Buchanan’s history and involvement in the military. The Red Rose Honor Guard donates a new flag for the raising every year and offers the service of one

of its members to play taps for the ceremony. During Buchanan’s time as president and as a member of Congress, he consistently voted to provide support for the country’s military.

Buchanan was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and became master of the Masonic Lodges in Lancaster, Lebanon and York while serving in the House of Representatives. One of Lancaster city’s seminal members of the police department was a close friend of Buchanan’s. Both the current chief of police and members of the

Masonic Lodge said a few words for the ceremony. The Lancaster Fencibles, a group of military re-enactors, performed a rifle salute during the service. The original Fencibles were volunteer militia members whose duties included guarding Buchanan when he was elected president and traveled to Washington, D.C.

“It’s a valuable thing to recognize the history of Lancaster,” Clarke said. “These are opportunities to learn about the past, hear how that time period affected our days today and learn from it.”

Nearly half a million served

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cere-

al, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The

organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg.

Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends.

Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www.power packsproject.org/volunteer or call 717-517-9220.

The Southern Lancaster Couny Historical Society, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, will host the 2023 Living History Encampment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 19, 20 and 21. On Friday, the event will be open from noon to 4 p.m.; on Saturday, demonstrations will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission for the encampment will be free, and parking will be available for a small fee per vehicle. Tours of the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum will also be offered for a small charge. The threeday event will feature tours of the camp, conversations with

Civil War re-enactors, book signings from historical authors, antique collection displays and Civil War-era replica weapon demonstra-

tions. Food will be available to purchase from Old Iron Grille.

This year, the event will introduce a program for homeschoolers on Friday as the encampment is set up. From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants will have opportunities to learn about Civil War-era medicine, converse with actors playing the roles of both Union and Confederate soldiers and see demonstrations from a blacksmith. Registration is not required, but the program is structured to provide an educational outing for homeschooled students. Students

will rotate through six informational stations and conclude the day with an artillery demonstration.

On Saturday, attendees will be able to meet actors playing President Abraham Lincoln and the first family, who will answer questions about their lives and the Civil War. Actors playing prominent generals from the war will also be available to offer insight on the details of the conflict. At 1 p.m., a battle re-enactment between Union and Confederate soldiers will be held.

Participants will have another opportunity to meet the president, first family and generals on Sunday. A battle re-enactment will take place at noon, followed by a Sunday service at 1:15 p.m.

The encampment will be divided into two parts: the living history encampment on the upper lawn behind the museum and the military encampment on the lower side of the property. The living history encampment will include presentations from historical fiction author Joel Moore and Civil War historian Bruce Mowday. Moore will cover biographical information on historical figures, display photographs from the war and offer book signings. Mowday’s presentation will detail the events of the Battle of Gettysburg.

“We are our history. It’s important to learn from the past to understand the present and try to mold our future,” Moore said. “At the encampment, you get to live history and walk through a time-warp to another era, so to speak.”

chance to learn from living history
The Living History Encampment will include weapon demonstrations and Civil War battle re-enactments.

The class will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and it will be taught by local historian and genealogist James Landis. Landis will begin the course at the Mennonite Life library, where he will discuss a variety of resources that researchers can use in their efforts. “A lot of people don’t realize that the county has records of destitute veterans - federal documents that may be relevant to a cemetery but are not always readily available,” Landis said.

Landis will discuss how to access burial records and cover a broad spectrum of methods for research. After discussion at the library, the class will visit a local

cemetery, where Landis will provide a demonstration on how to photograph tombstones and the best practices for investigating a family member’s resting place. “I want this course to give people a feel for what they’re going to encounter when going to cemeteries,” Landis said. “It’s such a diverse subject; there really isn’t one single approach.”

In his class, Landis will also discuss the benefits and disadvantages of conducting research online. Although there is a plethora of websites that offer information on burial sites, Landis said they are often incomplete and do not include valuable data that one might find when exploring in person. While a website might list a family member who is buried in a specific location, it likely won’t show a connection to relatives with a different surname who are buried nearby. Landis also noted that many resources for field research were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; several historical societies were unable to remain open, driving genealogists to rely on the internet for information.

Landis has been a genealogist for nearly 50 years, having become interested in ancestral research at a young age. At the age of 14, Landis saw a Revolutionary War reenactment and was inspired to find information on his relatives who served in the war. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were all members of the Lancaster County Historical Society, and Landis has been involved with Mennonite Life since 1995. “In my years of research, my biggest sense of accomplishment was standing at the burial site of my ancestor and being able to claim them,” Landis said. “You need to use a good bit of shoe leather, but if you do, you will be rewarded.”

Registration for the class is required by Wednesday, May 31. To register, visit www.mennonitelife.org or call 717-393-9745.

L-S girls lax tops ranked teams in Red Land, K-D

The Pioneers topped a pair of teams ranked in the top ten of the district power rankings over the last week as they prepare for the quickly approaching post-season.

With seven different players scoring, the girls lacrosse team came home from Red Land on Friday, May 5, with an 18-11

victory under their belt.

Rowan Kimmel’s five-goal, one assist effort paced the scoring.

Sophia Labrecque dished a team-high three assists and scored four times while Hannah Cissne chipped in with a hat trick. Bethany Stoltzfus (2g, 1a), Ryann Logan (1g, 1a), Leigha Saurbaugh (2g) and Abigail Welchans (1g) rounded out the scoring. The Patriots

were seeded 9th in AA power rankings.

Four days later they faced a stiffer challenge in KennardDale, ranked 8th, and pulled away with a 13-11 home victory. In a high-scoring first half, L-S held a slim 10-9 advantage. The second half changed pace, for both teams, and the Pioneers held the upper hand, 3-2, for the tight win.

“They had us chasing points and trading goals early in the first half,” said head coach Marshall Krebs. “Rowan, who was face guarded the whole game, started dominating the draws and Sophia was able to make several key feeds while being double-teamed. And Bethany took advantage of KD keying on Rowan and scored four.

“We made some adjustments at the half and the attack group of Leigha, Ryann, Sophia and Abby slowed KD’s transition game significantly, especially with a little over a minute left,” added Krebs. “Jillian Kelly, filling in for injured Jordan Dilling, made saves at pivotal moments and followed up with sure-handed clears. She played like an experienced goalie today.”

Kimmel finished with seven goals and two assists. Welchans (1g), Logan (1g, 1a) and Labrecque, with three assists, also contributed.

“Rowan had the best game of her career,” said Krebs. “In addition to scoring, she had 12 draw controls, three caused turnovers and four ground balls. In a competitive game like that, all that dirty work, ‘grit’ which is the team motto this year, was the difference in the game.”

BOYS’ LACROSSE

As a tune up for post-season play, the Pioneers hosted Red Land, currently seeded second in the District 3 power rankings, on Friday, May 5 and sent the Patriots packing. After an even first quarter, LS outscored Red Land in each of the next three frames, including a 2-0 result in the fourth, to come-away with a convincing 11-6 victory.

“It was a great team win,” said head coach Mike McConomy. “The defense worked together and was able to limit a dangerous offense

and Bryce Thomas (11 saves) played another great game.”

A four goal, one assist effort by Colin Sullivan led the offense. Zach Labrecque (4a) and KJ Kessler both finished with two goals while Chase Barber, Morgan Smith, and Anthony Carson each added one.

TRACK

In a tightly contested, regular season ender on Monday,

May 8, visiting Solanco held off the hosting Pioneers by nearly identical scores. The Pioneer girls suffered a 72-78 loss while the boys fell 79-71.

“Both meets were close, making the last events look really critical,” said head coach Cal Esh, “but there were lots of little things throughout the meet that could have gone either way.”

L-S won 9 of the 18 events,

including one relay. Elly Bruner, with top measures in the long, triple, and high jump as well as a win in the 300 hurdles, led the scoring.

Maggie Swarr was just as impressive, winning all three throwing events. She and Bruner joined Heron Gaudet and Olivia Zimmerman for a 4x100 relay win. Also picking up a win was Lyndi Wall in the 100.

The boys had a more balanced approach with only two multiple event winners on the day. Carson Coleman won the 100 and 200 while Parker Stoner led a sweep in the 3200 (Colin Whitaker 2nd and Smith 3rd) and then anchored the winning 4x800 relay with Andrew Cramer, Michael Colosi and Whitaker leading the way.

Other winners included Ben Devine (mile), Eric Doutrich (800), Aidan Wiley (pole vault) and Danny Jones (javelin).

A handful of players competed in the Manheim Township relays on Saturday, May 6. Swarr, who won the javelin overall) and Kelsey McTaggart finished second as did Braden Bauer and Danny Jones in the same event. Gaudet and Zimmerman medaled in the discus and shot.

SOFTBALL

The softball team continued its run of five straight games with a disappointing 6-4 loss to Ephrata on Thursday, May 4 and followed with an expected 16-3 romp over winless Lebanon on Friday. They capped the regular season with a much-needed 3-0 win over

Conestoga Valley Monday, May 8. That set up an anticipated matchup between Ephrata and CV on Tuesday.

“We needed CV to beat Ephrata to get into the L-L playoffs,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. That didn’t happen.

A victory by Ephrata gave the Mounts a 9-6 section record, the same as L-S. Ephrata would, however, qualify for the playoffs via tiebreaker. They beat L-S two out of the three game series.

L-S and Ephrata each scored three times in the fourth inning on Thursday. LS pulled ahead on a two out error that plated Brooke Zuber (3-4) who reached with a base hit.

The Mounts, with three singles, a walk, and an L-S error, took the lead for good with a three-run sixth. They outhit the Pioneers 9-7 and picked up the win despite four errors.

One day later, L-S extended its 6-0 lead with a ten-run sixth inning and outhit the Cedars 18-9. Zuber (4RBI) and Mackenzie Maki (2RBI) both connected with home runs in the sixth. Zuber, who went 3-5, added a solo shot in the third while Paige Baxter

SUNDAY JUNE 11th

(2-4) added a three-run homer to get things rolling in the first inning. She also fanned 10 batters and gave up seven hits in the lopsided win.

In Monday’s key win over CV, Maura Savoca pitched a shutout, striking out eight and giving up five hits. Both teams finished with five hits and one committed error.

L-S scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to prevail.

“Maura pitched a great game and Chloe Meck made a diving catch that saved us from going down two runs in the first inning,” said Rutledge. “Their pitcher, who is going to West Chester, was really good (9K) and I think all three of our runs were unearned.”

TENNIS

The boys’ tennis team battled defending District champ Dallastown, this year seeded third at 14-2, on Thursday, May 4, and came home with a 4-0 loss. The Pioneers were seeded sixth in the district tournament with a 12-2 record.

BASEBALL

The baseball team closed the regular season with a 6-5 thriller over Lebanon on May

5 and took care of CV (7-1) on Monday, May 8 leaving them in second place of Section Two with an 11-4 record (behind 12-3 Ephrata), thus qualifying for the L-L League playoffs.

L-S looked to take control of the Cedars early, jumping out to 3-0 and 5-1 leads before giving up four runs in the top of the fourth. Mason Coe’s (2-3, 2RBI) two out single in the bottom of the sixth plated Justin White (2-3), who reached on a base hit, with the winning run.

Peyton Harsh, with six strikeouts and one walk, was the winning pitcher. Coe recorded the last out to earn the save.

The Pioneers swept the 3game series against CV with a closer than it looked 7-1 final. With just a 1-0 lead after four complete innings, LS rallied for five runs in the fifth to seal the deal. Long picked up the win on the hill with six strikeouts and two walks. Anthony Turek struck out two and walked one in the seventh.

Harsh was 3-4 with 1RBI and Will Bailey was 2-3. Both Turek and Brenneman pushed in two runs each.

Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The deadline for entries is Monday, May 22. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org.

A panel of local judges will judge the artworks, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three artists. The winning artists will complete their art

at three select storm drains in downtown York. The new paintings will become part of the 18 storm drain murals that can be found between the Codorus Creek and the Royal Square District.

This project was funded by York Water Company, S.H.A.R.E., the Street 2 Creek

partners, and Cornerstone Barber and Shave Parlour.

For more information about the Street 2 Creek group and project, visit the aforementioned website or contact Jodi Sulpizio, Master Watershed Steward coordinator, at 717-840-7408 or jrb143@psu.edu.

Annual hymn sing planned

The seventh annual hymn sing is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, in Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Participants will include song leader and faculty member Bruce Gerlach, organist Frank Dodd, and pianist Paul Thor-

lakson, chair of the LBC | Capital Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department. A quartet of voices and a brass ensemble will also be featured.

The hymn sing is free to attend, but tickets may be reserved at www.lbc.edu /events.

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for county students seeking to further their educations at college.

Recently, the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps awarded its annual Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick;

Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; Mercyangelis Morillo, Columbia; Connor Nimmon, Hempfield; Luke Pagilia, Hempfield; Abigail Phillips, Conestoga Valley; Maximillian Ponton, Penn Manor; Tobias Reiff, Lancaster Mennonite; Heavynn Rodriguez, J.P. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.

“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”

To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.

“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”

Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has

awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.

“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.

“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

Mitzvah Day delivers for local nonprofits

On April 16 at 9 a.m., more than 60 families gathered at the Shaarai Shomayim Temple in downtown Lancaster for Mitzvah Day, an annual celebration of volunteerism that serves local nonprofit organizations by doing projects such as painting, packing and cooking food, cleaning parks, and more. A short service was held before the nearly 150 volunteers set out to fulfill the Jewish commandment of doing mitzvahs - good deeds - in the form of community services.

Bob Houghton, Sh’arim administrator with congregation Shaarai Shomayim, said that the tradition began in the mid-1990s when Rabbi Jack Paskoff suggested the event.

“For the most part, many of those organizations have longstanding relationships with us not just on Mitzvah Day,” said Houghton, who noted that during a five-day summer camp for children, older participants take part in community service work on three days.

Many of the projects the group undertook called for outside work. Although Houghton expressed concern about the weather prior to Mitzvah Day, he noted that April 16 was beautiful and that outside activities for Clare House, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake’s Stream Project, and Interfaith Power and Light were completed successfully. Up to 20 volunteers cleaned up Rader Park on Marietta Avenue. A second similar project involved cleaning winter trash from rain gardens on West James Street. Rain gardens collect rainwater and begin to filter out pollutants while providing a home for wildlife. “(Issues with) clean water and the environment can be overwhelming,” noted Houghton. “But if you can do this little bit, it makes a difference.”

Another emphasis is on making and packing food. Familystyle meals are created for some organizations, while others, such as the local domestic violence shelter, receive individually packed meals. Houghton mentioned that the shelter is near to the hearts of participants. “If you ask, ‘Which one do we feel for the most?’ it’s them,” shared Houghton, who said the shelter especially struggled during the pandemic when many nonprofits were forgotten.

Families with young children were assigned a project supporting the St. Anne Church brown

bag lunch giveaway. “We get all the supplies and package up 100 lunches,” said Houghton, who explained that since the sandwiches included must be made at St. Anne Church, items for those are donated. “In a brown paper bag, we put everything but the sandwiches,” said Houghton, who noted that the children decorate the paper lunch bags. “It’s the shortest project,” he added.

Creativity is also part of a project involving Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.

During Mitzvah Day, volunteers baked brownies and

made “thinking of you” cards to deliver to staff members and current residents at the house in Hershey, which provides a home away from home for families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.

During 2020, Mitzvah Day was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions, but in 2021, a virtual event was held. “People picked up supplies and did the (assigned) project,” said Houghton.

More information about the congregation may be found at www.shaarai.org.
