SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
“Catch The Spirit” At Summer Music Camp BY MARCELLA PEYRE-FERRY
race Community Church of Willow Street will offer a summer music camp as part of its Outpour Kids program. The weeklong camp, set for Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., will serve children entering first through eighth grades. Children of all experience and ability levels are welcome. “It’s kind of like secular musical theater camp meets VBS (vacation Bible school),” said Katie Wieand, director of Outpour Kids and the children’s music ministry and administrative coordinator for Grace Community Church. “We’re able to help all of them at their different levels grow in their abilities.” The camp will include devotionals, outdoor games, crafts and music. Students will prepare for the performance of a baseball-themed musical titled “Sermon on the Mound! - Catch the Spirit.” All children in the camp will participate in the musical, but for those wishing to perform special solos or speaking parts, there will be advance auditions on Sunday, June 5. Performers will be asked to learn their parts before the start of camp. “Our goal is to build their confidence, musical abilities and stage presence while gaining a knowledge and love for Jesus Christ,” said Wieand. The entire community is invited to attend the free performance of the musical on July 22 at 7 p.m. at the church. In addition, Wieand announced, the Lancaster Barnstormers have invited the Outpour Kids summer campers to perform “God Bless America” before the Friday, Aug. 5, home game against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks. This is the second year that Wieand has led the summer music camp. She has a Master of Music in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Belmont University. She has toured internationally, performing operatic and musical theater roles
in addition to performing locally at the Fulton Theatre and at Sight & Sound Theatre. Wieand pointed out that the Outpour Kids program is offered yearround. In the fall, there is an eightweek Thursday night worship choir, as well as a winter program. “The last worship choir had 80 singers from 24 different church homes,” Wieand said. “It was really giving them an opportunity to grow their talents and take them back and use them in their own church. They come from all over the community. It’s to equip children who have a love for the Lord to use their gifts.” Registration for the summer camp is open now through June 5, with space available for a maximum of 100 students. There is a cost to attend the camp. For those with financial challenges, scholarships are available. “We don’t want any kid to be turned away for any reason,” Wieand said. Grace Community Church is located at 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. To register for the summer music camp, visit www.outpourkids.com. For more details about the camp, call the church office at 717-464-5333. More information about the church is available at www.gccws.net and www.facebook.com/gccws.
School Launches New Math Program Over a two-month period this spring, a group of teachers, administrators, staff members, and Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) staff members from Lancaster Mennonite School at the New Danville Campus launched a program to encourage math skills gains for second- and third-grade students. The effort started with teachers analyzing the mid-year Acadience math and NWEA MAP Growth assessment data and identifying students’ addition and subtraction fact skills as an area of recommended growth. Working together, the team developed a plan to improve scores for those specific skill areas in each class by the end of the year. Second-grade teacher Sophie Dodge and third-grade teacher Angela Dietzel sought the support of IU13 math consultant Judy Trusz, as well as Lancaster Mennonite librarian Sarah Fichtner and IU13 math specialist Janelle Lammey.
The summer camp will culminate in a musical performance.

Through a series of classroom observations and data meetings, the team formed small groups of students across both grade levels that would meet for 15 minutes per week for targeted addition and subtraction strategy instruction specific to their current level. Each Wednesday morning, the four New Danville staff members now meet with their groups for a time called Math Buddies. The group leaders have used all sorts of games,
speed activities, direct instruction, technology-integrated activities, and other evidencebased strategies to engage students in fun and collaborative multi-age fact practice time. The Lancaster Mennonite values of empowering lifelong learning and nurturing curiosity are at work during Math Buddies time, as students make new friends, laugh together, and challenge one another to strive for academic excellence. Two months into the initiative, the team again met with
Angela Dietzel (standing), third-grade teacher, leads a math activity.
Trusz. The team shared that over the two months, the data collected by the teachers showed that the students participating in Math Buddies demonstrated significant growth across the board and were on track to meet the team’s goals before the end of the school year. The team also found that all the students enjoyed Math Buddies. In speaking with supervisors at the IU13, Trusz commented, “I am so impressed with what this group of women from New
Danville has accomplished in the past two months when they focused on math facts and differentiation by combining efforts of many people on staff.” Principal Lindsay Carson noted, “This collaboration and innovation is truly a strength of Lancaster Mennonite - the partnership between staff members and the belief that all of our students are truly ‘our’ students, that their progress is everyone’s responsibility.”

Working with Heck Construction, Water Street Mission transformed the 7000square-foot building to create a more welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The formerly open floor plan now boasts one main gathering space, surrounded by smaller rooms for meeting spaces to allow guests to speak privately with case managers, liaisons, counselors, and pastors. The outdated furnishings have been replaced with smaller tables as well as chairs and new sound and video equipment. Providence Day Shelter also offers a conference room for local community partners to meet with guests on-site. Water Street Mission, a resource to restore individuals and families experiencing homelessness, recently announced the reopening of Providence Day Shelter for guests in its emergency overnight shelter. Providence Day Shelter is the latest building to be remodeled with the goal of restoring dignity and healing to those in need. This project comes at the end of a six-year renovation cycle, which saw the upgrade of all of Water Street’s facilities for those coming off the street. In 2016, the mission completed a seven-day Mission Makeover of its dining room and kitchen. This was followed by a 2019 unveiling of Providence Emergency Shelter, offering a safe haven for guests in need of overnight shelter. The Access Center renovation was also completed during this time, offering concierge service to welcome first-time guests seeking help. The newly renovated space, with a coffeehouse feel, offers a safe place during the day for guests to access resources, counseling, housing information, and financial services,

As the president and director of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Jesse Rothacker is used to unusual calls. So he wasn’t surprised when he got a request on May 1 to search a barn in Manheim for a mysterious snake that had shown up in the same place four days in a row. He was surprised with what he found, however. “It was a California kingsnake, a nonvenomous species from the West Coast,” he said. Knowing the snake is not one to be found in the wild in Pennsylvania, Rothacker suspects the reptile is a pet, and he’s actively searching for its owner. Rothacker’s daughter, Viola, temporarily named the snake Zeebee while the owner search is underway. “He has a black and white pattern that she thought sort of looked like a zebra, so she came up with ‘Zeebee,’” Rothacker noted. The small snake measures just over a foot long. “If

Rothacker noted that when he rescues reptiles, he typically won’t post pictures of the animal but will publicize some basic information, hoping the rightful owner will reach out. In Zeebee’s case, pictures had already made the rounds on social media by the time the snake was rescued, so Rothacker will use the snake’s markings to help identify it when it’s claimed. Rescuing a snake is just part of a typical day’s work for Rothacker. He’s rescued snapping turtles stuck in concrete basins and snakes trapped in window wells. Another way to beat crowds is to avoid joining them. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration estimates that roughly 40% of the American population lives in coastal communities. That means more than 120 million Americans can drive to coastal areas without having to traverse potentially congested highways and interstates. Stay local for busy travel weekends like Memorial Day and reserve longer trips for other times of the year when fewer people are on the road. Memorial Day travel is historically heavy. Savvy vacationers can employ various strategies to avoid the crowds this year.

If work and kids’ school schedules make that impossible, departure should be delayed until late Thursday night or before the sun rises on Friday morning. Late at night or very early in the morning might not make for the most accommodating travel time, but roads tend to be the least congested at these times. Travelers should expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, even if traveling during offpeak hours. To help online banking users protect against spoofing, Northwest Bank has compiled a list of best practices for protection and remediation. Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication, such as a call or text, from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source like a financial institution. If individuals did not initiate contact with their bank and are contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, they should ignore the text or email or disconnect the call. Then, they should call their bank immediately using a phone number from a known source, like online banking or a bank statement. People should never send personal information over instant messaging, text, or email. Requests for personal information over the phone are almost always a scam.
Banks will never contact individuals and ask them to provide a code sent by text message or email to access their account. Text verification codes should only be initiated by the customer and entered by them through channels like online banking. Individuals should routinely check online banking to be sure there have not been any unauthorized logins. If someone identifies unauthorized logins, they should update their user ID and password immediately and review their transaction activity, reporting anything suspicious to their financial institution. The same user ID and password should not be used to access different websites. An email address should not be used as one’s online banking user ID, and individuals should routinely change their online

banking user ID and password. Additionally, for those who become a victim of identity theft, Northwest recommends several steps. Victims should call their financial institution immediately. An identity theft complaint should be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov or 877-438-4338. Victims should also contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on their credit report. To place a fraud alert, call Equifax at 800-5256285, Experian at 888-3973742, and TransUnion at 800680-7289. It is also important for people to file a police report to protect themselves if an ID thief starts using their information to commit crimes. ENB Offers “Pigs In The Park” Program Parents with young children visited the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Fan Fest a bit early on April 16 for an opportunity to teach their children a lesson about the importance of saving money. It was part of the Ephrata National Bank (ENB) Pigs in the Park program designed to turn little ones into lifelong savers. During the event, ENB hid hundreds of piggy banks within the stadium for children to find before gameday activities began. Any child ages 2 to 12 who found a piggy bank was invited to take it to an ENB branch and have money deposited into an ENB Super Saver savings account in his or
her name. Children were able to keep the banks and may continue saving for something special, making regular deposits into their savings accounts. Pigs in the Park events will continue at community parks throughout Lancaster, Chester and Lebanon counties on eight Saturdays throughout the summer. Pigs in the Park events will include the following: Saturday, May 21, Thomas P. Grater Community Park, Cloister Ave., Ephrata; Saturday, June 4, New Holland Park, 400-498 E. Jackson St., New Holland; Saturday, June 18, West Nantmeal Park, 455 N. Manor
Road, Elverson; Saturday, July 9, Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg; Saturday, July 23, Manheim Park, 15 E. High St., Manheim; Saturday, Aug. 6, Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville; Saturday, Aug. 20, Denver Memorial Park, 801 Main St., Denver; and Saturday, Aug. 27, Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. All events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Children and their families are welcome to search for the piggy banks during the allotted time or while supplies last. Learn more about Pigs in the Park at www.epnb.com/pigsinthepark.
