Parade formation will begin at 8 a.m. on Clearview Drive, and the parade will commence at 9 a.m. The Memorial Day service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Strasburg Cemetery, 50 W. Franklin Street, Strasburg. The parade procession will stop first at Wesley United Methodist Church, where veterans have been interred at the cemetery behind the church. After a salute, the parade participants and spectators will observe a moment of silence to honor deceased veterans. The parade will halt next in front of Saint
“This event gives all of us a chance to remember what it takes to have a free nation and express our appreciation of those sacrifices.” The parade will stop at the War Memorial at the town square, where VFW members will lead a flag-changing ceremony. After the parade, everyone is encouraged to take the short walk over to the Strasburg Cemetery for the memorial service.
Rep. Keith J. Greiner will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Service. This year’s honorary grand marshal will be community volunteer and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Lynda Houck. Houck has volunteered with many community organizations in Strasburg and was a career officer in the Army. The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club encourages the public to join Bare Bones Bike Shop Crew and ride decorated bicycles in the parade. The community is welcome to continue the tradition of displaying flags and other patriotic decorations along the parade route. The tradition of placing flags, provided free of charge by the National VFW, in Strasburg-area cemeteries marking veterans’ final resting places will continue.
Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your

Ettelman Posts Art Auction Approximately 100 works of art by Ron Ettelman will be exhibited and auctioned on Thursday, June 3, at 6 p.m. at Boltz Auctions, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. A preview will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The auction is being held in connection with the retirement of Ron and his wife, Virginia. After 45 years of business, the Ettelmans recently closed the doors of Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery in Mountville. The building went to auction on May 13. The artworks to be sold in the upcoming auction are those items that remained at the Ettelmans’ building and that they cannot store.
Half of the proceeds of the auction will be donated, with 25% of sales going to the Lancaster Museum of Art and Demuth Museum and 25% going to the Ware Center. Ron described many of his works as whimsical, often with a deeper story lurking under the surface for viewers to interpret in their own way. In 2016, he previously presented a retrospective exhibit of 153 works at the Ware Center. This exhibit’s title, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” described the artist going to the studio in the basement of his farmhouse to work on his art. For more details, call Boltz Auctions at 717-392-4257.

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL
R070930
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Six Pioneer Teams Compete in Post Season Play and Riley Dawson chipped in with two each, Kelly Hostetter scored once and assisted twice, and Zoe Dilling collected five saves. BASEBALL After wrapping up the Section Two title, the Pioneers started their run through the L-L League playoffs with a pair of late game wins, holding off Cocalico 4-2 Saturday morning, May 15 and getting past Section Four champ Lancaster Catholic 5-2 last Tuesday. The results leave the Pioneers with a nine game win streak. Two runs in the first inning gave L-S an early lead but the Eagles knotted the score in the top of the sixth, forcing the hosts to battle back. And battle back they did. Owen Fikker’s (1-3) single plated Alex Knapp (1-3) and Jake Long (22) scored on a wild pitch. Cocalico put two on in the top of the seventh but got no further. Caleb Guyer got the win, giving up two earned runs over six innings, striking out six and walking one. Gehrig Harsh threw one inning of relief to earn the save. At Ephrata Tuesday night, L-S fought off a one run deficit in the first inning and scored in each of the last three innings, including three in the fifth, to take control. Gio Malatesta, Long and Braedon Karpathios all went 2-4, accounting for six of Lampeter’s seven hits. On the hill, G. Harsh fanned eight and walked two in 5.2 innings of work to get the win. Peyton Harsh pitched the last four outs to earn the save. “Every player is providing some contribution to the team’s success,” said head coach Jeff Swarr. “Alex Knapp and Braedon Karpathios have been putting together strong at bats while Owen Fikkert and Gio Malatesta are strong defensively up the middle. Our pitchers have grown throughout the season and compete with each pitch they throw,” he continued. GIRLS’ SOFTBALL After blowing past N. Lebanon 11-1 in the opening round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs last Monday at home, the Pioneers traveled to Millersville to take on Penn Manor. Errors proved to be the difference in this one as the Pioneers finished with just one earned run in a tight 4-3 final. “Nothing is ever easy,” said head coach Gene Charles. “We didn’t really play our best, but we took advantage of their mistakes and Kieva Middleton (8K, 2W) got the job done.” The Comets committed three errors in the first two innings and fell behind 4-0 with L-S earning just one of those runs. L-S opened with two in the first and Manor looked to answer in the top of the second. Emily Riggs singled and scored on Maddie Trout’s
double but the run was called back when the ball rolled under the outfield fence. “That really squashed our momentum,” said Comet head coach Dave Stokes. “That could have been the difference in the game. I was going to send Maddy home for an inside the park homer, but they called it back. And the inning ended with a double play. We couldn’t catch a break.” “That bases loaded double play was huge,” said Charles. “Daisy Frank and Chloe Blantz are great out there. That’s the third double play they’ve turned this year.” L-S loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and pushed two more runs across on a bobbled ball in the outfield. The Pioneers were denied after that while the Comets plated single
runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make things interesting. “They out hit us 9-5,” said Charles, “but we survived to play another day.” Against NL, Cam Byler’s two run homer sparked a five run fourth inning as L-S jumped in front 10-0 before giving one back in the top of the fifth. Brook Zuber’s RBI single in the home half of the fifth capped the scoring and was Lampeter’s 14th hit of the game. photo by Mona Steinhauer

Quarryville Lions Club has announced that the Huffnagle Park Concert Series will return this summer. At 7 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month from June to September, different bands will perform live at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville. The performers will be Flipside Big Band on June 12, Summit Hill Bluegrass on July 10, Seasons Celtic Band on Aug. 14, and Ryan Mayersky on Sept. 11. The Flipside Big Band is directed by Howard Boots, and the guest vocalist will be Erin Biles, vocal music teacher at Solanco High School. The trumpet solo on “Bye Bye Blackbird” will be performed by Gary Doll, retired instrumental music teacher at Solanco High School. Summit Hill Bluegrass is from southeastern Pennsylvania. The band plays bluegrass, gospel, and a variety of other genres. Seasons Celtic Band is comprised of siblings MaryKate Spring, Peter Winter, Mary-Teresa Summer, MaryGrace Autumn, and MaryClare Chun Lee. These siblings create a fusion of Celtic and roots music on harp, hammered dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, and more. The award-winning band has been featured on both national radio and television, and it has recorded six albums. Two of the members have competed in the AllIreland musician competitions on their respective instruments, and the band performs frequently in concert series and at music festivals such as Celtic Fling, the Kutztown Folk Festival, and Music on the Mountain. Mayersky is a country artist from Lancaster. He began singing and playing guitar in 2002 and was the lead guitarist and vocalist for the bands Dorcas and To Begin Amor. To Begin Amor performed regularly at the Chameleon Club and Club 19, opening for local and major label bands. Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets and should maintain social distance when finding places to sit. The series is sponsored by

Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. Memorial Day from pg 1 A special float, sponsored by the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, will pay tribute to military personel, both those killed in action and those missing in action. The Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching band will participate in the parade, and the LampeterStrasburg Community Band will perform at the memorial service. “I’m looking forward to being able to honor those men and women who gave their last full measure in defense of this country,”
stated Brian Barr, parade chairman and member of Strasburg Area Sertoma Club. “This event gives all of us a chance to remember what it takes to have a free nation and ex press our appreciation of those sacrifices.” In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled, and the memorial service will take place in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.” Individuals with an official diagnosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. The Lancaster Family YMCA and YMCA of York and York County will collaborate to deliver the inaugural joint Diabetes Prevention Program on Tuesday, June 8, at 6 p.m. The program aims to help reduce the risk for Type 2 diabetes. Participants will gather virtually to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. The program will feature instructors and resources from both YMCA associations. For more information, contact Heather Moore at hmoore @yorkcoymca.org or 717-8437884, ext. 248.
The festival will be held rain or shine. An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Free parking will be available on-site. The proceeds will benefit the ongoing effort to maintain and restore the historic Covenanter church and its attached one-room school museum. Both sides of the structure will be open during the festival.
