Prima Theatre is hosting concerts featuring the music of Queen and Journey. Upcoming concerts will occur outdoors from a portable stage in the parking lot at Liberty Place, located behind the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 18, and Saturday, June 19. The songs will be led by Grace Byrnes, Donovan Hoffer, and Asia Littlejohn. Byrnes starred as Lucy Harris in Prima’s 2019 production of “Jekyll and Hyde.” Hoffer performed at the Fulton Theatre in “Chicago” as Mary Sunshine and in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” as Clopin. Littlejohn is a vocalist who has performed around the world, including as a soloist at Lincoln Center. On June 8, Prima hosted a media preview of the show. The band performed four songs to give the small audience a taste of what is to come.

About five years ago, Jenice Weaver and her husband, Glenn, saw that other school districts had ministry-based organizations that would allocate resources for families in need within the district. The Weavers soon realized there was a need something similar in Lampeter-Strasburg, so they founded the nonprofit

organization LS Together, whose motto is “pioneering life together.”. LS Together attempts to determine what the needs are within the district and then pulls together resources to fill these needs. The organization runs programs only if they are not being offered elsewhere; however, if a program already exists, then LS Together will raise awareness to promote

the program. Recently, LS Together partnered with Wanderlust Coffees in Lancaster. Together, the two organizations created the Pioneer Blend. “ We receive 20% of the profits, which is very generous on their part,” said Jenice. “Since we created our blend, a lot of other nonprofits have partnered with them,” stated intern Cassie Meck. “It’s a two-for-one deal. You’re supporting two local organizations with one bag of coffee.” Since LS Together partnered with Wanderlust, Wanderlust has expanded its products. Now, people can purchase a cold brew kit and 100% recyclable pods in addition to bags of the Pioneer Blend. There is a flat fee for delivery, or individuals can pick up their items at Wanderlust or Jenice’s house. “People should buy our coffee blend because it supports a community,” said Meck. “Just by buying one bag, you help so many people.”

The songs will be led by (from left) Asia Littlejohn, Donovan Hoffer, and Grace Byrnes.

The performances will blend music and theater.

“Having you guys here … that’s what I’ve been missing through this whole COVID thing,” stated Hoffer. “I can look at you and connect with you, and that’s what we needed at this point … the audience.” Hoffer said he got the gig while sitting in his apartment in Chicago. He was preparing to leave for an audition for America’s Got Talent (AGT) when Prima’s executive artistic producer, Mitch Nugent, called him. Over a decade ago, Nugent and Hoffer did a Glee cabaret together. “It was the first call postCOVID, so it was a magical, collaborative thing, and the way he spoke about it made me know I was all in,” said Hoffer.

Safety protocols will be in place at the concerts, including distanced circles chalked on the ground per party. Patrons must bring their own lawn chairs. The location will be handicapped-accessible, and on-site lavatories will be available. “I’m so excited for the people to be in a group again together because so much of the experience of live theater is the other people in the room,” stated Megan Witkovsky, Prima’s director of patron experiences. “I think they’re going to be blown away. Everyone will have a blast, and it’s just going to be nonstop smiles.” For more information, visit https://primatheatre.org /queen.

Pioneers Beat Twin Valley For District Crown

BY MONA STEINHAUER

was Twin Valley that handed L-S its only loss to date, a 4-2 result all the way back on March 26. Twenty-two wins later, the two teams met again and the stakes were higher, a district crown which Twin Valley robbed L-S of in the 2018 finals. The Pioneers avenged

that loss, so to speak, one year later when they knocked the Raiders out of states. ‘Revenge is a dish best served “They beat us three times in our cold’ might just sum up Lampeterlast five outings,” stated head coach Strasburg’s 5-1 win over Twin Valley Gene Charles. “Anytime you can in this year’s District Three Class 5A beat your nemesis it’s a good day.” Championship, Friday June 4 at Or in this case, two days as Millersville University. After all, it weather on Thursday pushed the game to Friday morning. L-S got off to a solid start, taking advantage of three walks, including one with the bases loaded to go up 1-0 in the first inning. Twin Valley answered the challenge in the home half of the inning, scoring on a base hit, a stolen base and a wild throw past third base. The weather appeared in the bottom of the third, forcing the game to finish on Friday. “I was a bit concerned that we would come back flat,” said Charles, “but Kieva (Middleton) shut them down. That just might have been the best I’ve seen her pitch.” The junior struck out eight, photo by Mona Steinhauer walked two and scattered five hits. In the District Three Championship win against Twin Valley FriL-S, on the other hand, also colday, June 4, Lampeter shortstop Chloe Blantz goes deep to grab lected five hits, but two of them a pop up. were home runs. Chloe Blantz broke that 1-1 tie with a two-run blast in the top of the fifth, plating No. 9 hitter Sydney Weichler who opened with a base hit. Two outs later, Middleton (7K, 3H) walked and Emily Platt sent another ball over the fence, powering L-S past the top seed Raiders (21-2) just hours before nine Pioneer seniors graduated. “Sydney’s hit was big to start the inning,” said Charles. “Those homers gave us some breathing room. “It was a satisfying win against a quality opponent. The seniors won states as freshmen,” he continued. “They had won everything but a district title. Now we have that.” Three days later, back at Millersville, the Pioneers began their quest for a second PIAA trophy, opening the 5A tournament against photo by Mona Steinhauer Marple Newtown (17-7). L-S scored Lamepter’s Daisy Frank fires a put out throw to first base in the single runs in the first, second, third District Three Championships against Twin Valley Friday, June 4. and fifth innings but broke things open with a four-run sixth and move on with an 8-2 victory. Delaware-bound shortstop Blantz again set the tone, opening the action with a lead-off triple and scoring on Daisy Frank’s sac fly. She finished with two triples and three runs scored. Ally Raub doubled in Emily Platt (3-4, 3 RBIs) in the second inning and Middleton (2-4, 2 RBIs) singled in Blantz in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Tigers got one back in the fourth and cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth but that was as close as they would get. L-S iced the victory, its 23rd straight, with 1620 Cambridge Rd., four runs in the bottom half. Julia Honey Brook, PA 19344 Gerard provided the spark, a two(610) 273-2990 strike double that opened the inning. count run scoring base hit and Platt’s two strike, two run single wrapped up the scoring. “We left a lot of runners on base, but we got a win when we needed it,” Charles said. “We didn’t show them our best, that’s for sure. Now we need to regroup for Springfield.” BASEBALL In another tight game, the Pioneers saw a 2-1 lead slip away in the seventh inning when Manheim Central rallied for two runs in their final at bat to earn the fifth and final berth to the PIAA tournament, Friday, June 4. The Pioneers defeated the Barons 4-2 on May 1 but then dropped a 20 final to that same squad in the L-L

League playoffs 19 days later. In their third meeting this season, Manheim jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but L-S rebounded with two in the top of the third. Andrew Whitehead walked and courtesy runner B Adams advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on Alex Knapp’s double to left. Knapp’s steal of home put L-S in front. That lead stood through the next three innings with both teams leaving a runner here and there on base. Then, in the seventh, Manheim opened with a leadoff single and, with one out, got another base hit that scored the tying run. Gehrig Harsh struck out the next

batter on a ball in the dirt. “Our catcher threw to first to get the out there but then, in an attempt to get the out at third, we threw the ball away and they scored the winning run,” recalled head coach Jeff Swarr. “That was a difficult loss to see and experience. Our guys worked hard all game and played great baseball all year,” he added. Jack Swarr started on the hill and went 5.2 innings before turning the ball over to Harsh. The Pioneers finished with just two hits on the day - one by Knapp, who also had an RBI, and one by Isaiah Parido. In 2019 the Pioneers finished second in the PIAA 5A playoffs. See Sports pg 11

“One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “ We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-weekold Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola.

Gawne was second on the team in Draw Controls with 100, and Lampeter’s fourth leading scorer. “Hannah, a junior, was a force on the draws this year,” said Krebs. “Her breakout game was against Cocalico, gaining all six controls in the second half against Hannah Custer (league mvp) enabling us to come back from a five-goal deficit. Her contributions were crucial to our success this year.”

She is one of only four players in the L-L League committed to play at that level.” “Kimmel, a sophomore, took the league by storm this year with her stick skills, speed and ability to control the draw,” recalled Krebs. “She was first in team scoring with 110 points (81 g, 29 assists) and 119 draw controls. Most impressive in Rowan’s goal total was that they occurred in the flow of our offense. We didn’t have any set plays for Rowan,” Krebs stated. “Rowan was

She would blanket the goalkeeper on clear attempts and pursue the ball carrier to the opposite restraining line. We will miss her presence for sure. “Jeslyn led the defense while finishing second on the team with 79 total points. Her 50 assists were the second most total in the league,” Krebs noted. “She is also the recipient of the Fackler-Hower Sportsmanship Award. Lancaster Snapshot is an online initiative designed to encourage Lancaster County residents to share photos of people, places, and things they hold dear. “ We are deeply interested in connecting people across any number of demographics,” said Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). “This idea was hatched in the midst of COVID-19 when we were literally and ideologically separated from each other,” he added, noting the project is

Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancastersnapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weightbearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, not-

ing that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “What’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the ways that we care about the community,” he said. “It’s not just my interests, but these are the things I want to sustain. That’s a stronger way to start relationships.” He stated that he has been impressed by the positive way community members have reacted to Lancaster Snapshot. “(It keeps me hopeful) when people say, ‘I would love to connect with the community,’” he said.
