Hear the Sounds of Strasburg

The Sounds of Strasburg free concert series will return to Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg, on select Saturdays from June until August. Each show will be held at the park’s amphitheater and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Food and frozen desserts will be available to purchase from a variety of vendors on-site.

The first show will take place on June 24, and it will feature a performance from the John Bressler Show. Bressler is a Pennsylvania native pianist who plays music in the style of Billy Joel and Elton John.

The second show will be held on July 15, and it will include a show from Studio Two, a Beatles tribute band hailing from New England. The band is made up of graduates from Berklee College of Music who pay homage the Beatles’ style by emulating their instruments,

appearance and stage presence. The concert is one of several stops on the outfit’s tour, during which it will play some of the Beatles most popular songs and early material.

The third show will occur on July 29, showcasing Lancaster-based artist Tuck Ryan. Ryan performs music that draws influence from classic soul music from the ’70s as well as the Americana songwriters who he listened to in his youth. Ryan will be backed on vocals and keyboard by a band comprising electric guitar, bass and drums.

The final show of the series will take place on Aug. 12, and it will begin with a free dance lesson from a group of instructors at the Lancaster County Swing Dance Club. After the lesson, participants will be invited to show off their new skills and dance to music provided by local swing band Flipside.

The concert series was created eight years ago by the Strasburg Community Park Foundation, a See Concert series pg 5

Former L-S players find success at Delaware

Three former LampeterStrasburg (L-S) softball players continue to have success at the University of Delaware (UD). Hanna Garber, Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz were key members of the first L-S team to win a state title in 2018. They have continued their winning ways by helping Delaware win its second straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular-season championship.

Hanna, a fifth-year senior, earned NFCA All-Region honors in three consecutive seasons. She earned her fourth career All-CAA selection and her third straight nod to the first team as she put together another remarkable season. She led the Blue Hens with a .360 batting average while leading the way with 59 hits, 32 runs scored, 13 doubles and four triples. The mathematics education major broke the program record for runs scored, setting the new mark of 161, and finished her UD career among the top five in hits, doubles, triples and stolen bases. Businesses awarded KIZ tax credits

The Lancaster City Alliance recently recognized four city businesses that have been awarded more than $220,000 in 2022 Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) tax credits. The program is in place to encourage innovation and cultivate entrepreneurs in key industry sectors, including high technology, life sciences, business services and advanced materials/diversified manufacturing. Lancaster City Alliance is the state-designated coordinating agency for the KIZ tax credit program in Lancaster.

Community & Economic Development, and Lancaster is one of 29 KIZ regions in Pennsylvania. It is an incentive program that provides tax credits to qualified small businesses in existence for fewer than eight years. Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.

The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of

the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.

“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”

All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”

This year’s awardees are Creative Coding Group Inc., $22,975; Pipedream Marketing Inc., $77,546.00; Triode Media Group, LTD, $21,307; and VIZpin Inc., $100,000, which is the award maximum.

The KIZ Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of

Lancaster City Alliance also manages the Building On Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan for the city and has worked to align the city’s KIZ locations with the same areas identified in the Building On Strength Plan to encourage investment. This strategy aims to provide better coordination of services and maximize impact for the city and its growing entrepreneurial community.

On Tuesday, June 13, Lampeter-Strasburg’s boys’ lacrosse team made its second straight appearance in the PIAA semifinals. And for the second year in a row, the Pioneers’ season ended in the 2A semifinals, as the District 7 champs and defending state champs, Mars, defeated L-S 11-7 at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium.

L-S (20-5) got off to a fast start on Tuesday with KJ Kessler, Gavin Denlinger and Zach Labrecque pushing the Pioneers out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first

period. They extended a 3-1 first quarter lead with two more goals by Kessler early in the second frame before Mars woke up. The Planets (22-2) scored three unanswered goals to get back in the game. Labrecque had the final tally of the half that left L-S in front, 6-4. The second half was a different story, especially the fourth quarter that found L-S without goal scored. Colin Sullivan found the back of the net in the third frame, keeping the Pioneers in front 7-5 but that would be the last goal scored for L-S. Mars cut it to one with less than a

minute left in the quarter and knotted the score at 7-7 with 10:40 remaining in the game. Ryan Blake gave the Planets their first lead of the day and then Mars added three more goals to extend their advantage.

“It was a bittersweet ending to the season,” said head coach Mike McConomy. “We ended up 20-5 on the season. Last year we went 21-4 which is the best in L-S program history.

“Mars was able to chip away at our lead in the second and third quarters,” he continued. “A few costly mistakes on both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter cost us the game. Overall, it was a tremendous season. I couldn’t be more proud of all of our seniors. I wish them the best as they move on.”

Kessler finished with a first half hat trick to pace the Pioneer scoring. Labrecque finished with two goals and two assists. Sullivan (1g, 1a), Denlinger (1g) and Chase Barber, with two assists, rounding out the scoring. Bryce Thomas finished with nine saves.

Ian Coulter finished with four goals to lead Mars, playing in its third consecutive semifinal, and fifth in the last six seasons. The Planets topped Susquehannock 10-5 in the quarterfinals, the same

team L-S edged past in overtime in the district semifinals. The Pioneers went on to win the rubber match against Cocalico and captured the school’s first District crown.

After trouncing Hampton 16-0 (the only shutout posted in the PIAA tournament) in a home game in the opening round, L-S survived South Fayette 13-11 on Saturday, June 10 at Panzer Stadium.

This game looked like it was heading in the direction of a mercy rule finish as L-S dominated play in the first half and extended their lead to 11-2 early in the third quarter.

Tied at 1-1 early in the game, Sullivan, with two goals, Barber and Labrecque combined for four straight goals and a 5-1 advantage with 2:48 remaining. Fayette came out of a timeout with their second goal of the quarter, but Denlinger scored in transition and Labrecque finished a first half hat trick, scoring with 14 seconds left in the frame, pushing the lead to 7-2.

“We had a great team effort in the first half and then struggled to hold on to the lead in the second half,” said McConomy. “Credit South Fayette’s coaching staff and players. They made adjustments and played hard in the second half.”

The scoring slowed in the second quarter, but L-S picked up two more when Barber found the net with a soft underhand shot and Drexton Frank gathered a turnover and went the distance.

Barber took a feed from Sullivan and made it 10-2 with 9:23 left in the third and Labrecque scored again less than a minute later, giving LS a nine-goal advantage.

Sensing a shortened game approaching, the Lions buckled down, sured up their passing and rallied with four straight goals, cutting the lead to 11-6 with one quarter remaining.

Labrecque opened the fourth quarter scoring just 15 seconds in and Sullivan found the net with 7:31 showing. The Lions cut the

lead to 13-10 with 4:56 left to play and Thomas came up with a big save with 55 ticks left. South Fayatte capped the scoring with :34 showing.

“That was a huge save by Bryce,” said McConomy. “He has been bailing us out late in games all season. The last thing we wanted was for the game to go into overtime since South Fayette had all the momentum in the fourth quarter. I’m glad we battled through the adversity and closed out with a win.”

Labrecque finished with five goals, Sullivan, and Barber both added three with Frank and Denlinger netting one each.

“This was a great win for the program and got us to the PIAA 2A semifinals for the second year in a row,” added McConomy. “Thanks

to all the parents and fans who drove to Penn State to support us.”

SOFTBALL ALL-STARS

The Lancaster-Lebanon League coaches recently announced this year’s all-star selections. Brooke Zuber, Mackenzie Maki, and Paige Baxter were all first-team selections with catcher Julia Gerard receiving honorable mention recognition. This was Zuber’s third first-team recognition.

Lancaster County Cruisers will present a President’s Trophy as well as a Best of Show Trophy.

Music will be provided throughout the day by disc jockey Jeff Primaldi. Food will be available to purchase from two food trucks, and desserts will be sold by an ice cream vendor and a baked goods stand.

Every year, the club donates a portion of the funds raised by the show to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. In recent years, Lancaster County Cruisers also decided to use the show to support the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga. Building Bridges offers equine therapy services to veterans who are experiencing PTSD from their time in the armed forces. “Helping the food bank and Building Bridges Foundation makes all the work everyone in the club does worthwhile,” said Richard Lanham, a member of Lancaster County Cruisers and event coordinator for the car show. “We also want to thank Willow Street Fire Company for allowing us to have our car show there for all of these years.”

Lancaster County Cruisers will operate a booth at the event to offer information on the club and applications for membership. The club is open to car enthusiasts of any kind; owning a vehicle is not a requirement to join. The members of Lancaster County Cruisers meet once every month to

plan the club’s event, coordinate trips to car shows and discuss vehicles that are for sale. Although the majority of its members own vintage cars, the club welcomes those with vehicles of any kind. “We don’t care if you have an old car or a new car or what country it’s from,” said Lanham. “It’s a great place to meet other car enthusiasts and to get involved with shows.” In addition to the annual car show, Lancaster County Cruisers organizes a picnic every summer and a luncheon for its members around Christmas time.

Heritage Sunday planned at Boehm’s UMC

The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold its annual Heritage Sunday event on June 25 in historic Boehm’s Chapel at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. A society business meeting will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the worship service at 4 p.m. The event is one in which many descendants of Martin Boehm, who gave early Methodist circuit riders a

place to say, and whose home was a meeting place for early Methodists, an opportunity to return to the chapel, which has stood since 1791.

Dale Mylin, a society board member and a member of Byerland Mennonite Church, where Martin Boehm was pastor and bishop, will present a message titled “Keeping Your Hand to the Plow: On Being an Influencer.” Mylin is a ninth-generation descendant of Mar-

tin Meylin, an early county settler.

Music will be provided by soloist and keyboard player Oksana Reedy, music director at Boehm’s UMC, and violinist Tammy Ober.

Following the worship service, Jeff and Sue Frey, who own the nearby Boehm family homestead, will offer a hayride to the farm.

Boehm’s Chapel is located south of Willow Street, off Route 272.

Project helps fund adoption, aid local resident

In cooperation with Both Hands, Strasburg Township residents Arlan and Becky Stoltzfus have taken part in a project that aided a local widow and is helping the Stoltzfuses to attain a second domestic infant adoption.

The Stoltzfuses and additional volunteers performed a day of service at the home of Ms. Verna on June 10 at no cost to Ms. Verna. Just as participants in a fundraiser 5K race request donations in support of their event, the Stoltzfuses requested sponsorships from businesses, family members and friends in advance of their day of service.
