On Friday, July 7, Strasburg Borough will host a chicken barbecue fundraiser at Strasburg Marketplace, 214 Hartman Bridge Road, Ronks. Meals will be available to purchase at a set price and will include a barbecued half-chicken, chips and a drink. The fundraiser will begin at 3 p.m. and conclude once it is sold out.
Atthe end of May, players on Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School’s e-sports teams competed with students from across the state in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic E-Sports Association (PIEA) state finals and semifinals. The varsity Overwatch 2 team finished its season with a match in the semifinals on May 10, and the
junior varsity team climbed to the finals and played on May 20. In the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate championship, the school was represented by Jackson Brazzle, who placed in the top eight players in the state.
To prepare for the championships, the students on the esports team met three times a week; two of the meetings entailed practice, and the third meeting consisted of competitive matches.
The e-sports teams are coached by L-S graduate Brennan Havey, who often helps the players to hone their skills remotely outside of the practices.
Each year, PIEA announces its sanctioned list of video games for the fall and spring seasons. The students on the e-sports teams then vote on which games from the list they will focus on, with the goal of competing in the
championship at the end of the season. This year, the students chose to compete in Overwatch 2, Valorant and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The varsity and junior varsity e-sports teams hold tryouts at the beginning of each season, although there is enough space on both teams to ensure that any student who wishes to participate will get an opportunity to do so.
The profits from the chicken barbecue will assist the borough in covering the expenses for Strasburg’s first National Night Out (NNO), which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St., Strasburg. The free event will include activities for children, and it will highlight multiple local nonprofit organizations, such as the Strasburg Fire Department and Gordonville EMS. Members of each organization will operate stations to provide information on the services that their group offers the community.
Until this year, the Strasburg Borough Police Department participated in West Lampeter Township’s NNO. After receiving multiple inquiries from Strasburg residents who wondered why Strasburg didn’t have its own NNO, the borough decided to introduce the event this year. “It’s a great way to get us more involved with our community,” said Kayla Garver of the Strasburg Police Department. “The money raised from the barbecue will go toward anything we need for (NNO), from fireworks to free food.”

The e-sports program at L-S was created in 2019. The school’s administration allocated resources to provide the teams with a computer lab dedicated to e-sports practices and games. The lab is equipped with computers that were built to meet the specifications required to run competitive video games. “We’re fortunate enough to have our own e-sports lab. We don’t have to tear down our equipment and set up each practice,” said Mike Keene, who is the network system adminisrator for the school district.

Shortly after the program was created, the e-sports teams switched to holding virtual practices due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams returned to the lab in 2022, although the virtual nature of the program allows them to compete in certain championships remotely.
Once a year, the e-sports club hosts a community gaming day for its members. The event gives students an opportunity to connect with each other through recreational gaming and focus less on competing.
“I think it offers a real opportunity for students who would not typically participate in a sport or club. Being on the team allows them to learn communication and teamwork skills,” said Keene.
“There’s a community of students that has been underserved and found a home in this program,” Harnish added. “We’re looking forward to another great season next year.”

NNO is a tradition that began in 1984. Neighborhoods across the country coordinated an evening that residents kept their porch lights on and sat outside of their homes. The primary goal of the event was to raise awareness about anti-crime initiatives such as neighborhood watches and drug prevention programs. NNO has evolved over the years and is now observed by millions of residents throughout the country. Today, neighborhoods participate in the tradition by hosting events that range from modest barbecues to extravagant festivals.
NNO is always held on the first Tuesday of August, and it often entails demonstrations from police departments, fire companies and paramedics.
“(NNO) is beneficial for both sides; people get to know who’s working in their area, and officers get to meet the residents who they serve,” Garver said. “We’re planning to make it a yearly event.”
The introduction of Strasburg’s first NNO is part of the borough’s recent
initiative to increase the police department’s engagement with the community. In February, the borough held its first Coffee With a Cop event at Agape Café & Grille in Strasburg. Officers made themselves available for discussion with community members in an effort to bridge the gap between law enforcement and local residents. “It allowed people to become familiar with the people working in the department,” Garver said. “We had a great turnout, which we were very excited about. We also hope to make Coffee With a Cop an annual event.”
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will feature the historic Reading Railroad during Reading Railroad Days on Wednesday, June 28, through Sunday, July 2, and Wednesday, July 5, through Saturday, July 8. Reading Railroad Days will take place during regular museum hours and is included in the regular museum admission.
