Connecting cultures through coffee

InApril, Sophia Steinhauer returned from a six-month mission trip to Costa Rica. Although this wasn’t her first time traveling abroad, Steinhauer’s recent trip helped her gain some clarity about her path moving forward.

Steinhauer graduated from Solanco High School in 2020 and took a mission trip to Paraguay shortly after. There, she discovered an affinity for South American culture. Upon her return, she began working as a barista upon her return to Lancaster. Steinhauer currently works at Latte Luv in Strasburg (when she’s not overseas).

Ever since Steinhauer’s first trip, she’s been thinking of ways that she could combine her passion for coffee, South American culture and serving the community. An opportunity presented itself through Atlas Travel and Study Abroad, a program that would allow her to learn Spanish, study the Bible and return to South America at the same time. Steinhauer left in September to live in Santo Domingo for the duration of the program.

Once she arrived in Costa Rica,

Steinhauer was immediately faced with a variety of challenges. Although she had studied Spanish for years, she still experienced a language barrier between herself and the locals. “It was a really humbling experience. Nothing prepares you for being in the entire world of fluent people,” Steinhauer said.

On weekdays, Steinhauer had six hours of training: three were dedicated to learning Spanish, and three were reserved for biblical theology classes. The classes were taught by professors from across Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Steinhauer said the most rewarding aspect of the program was living alongside the locals and developing a bond with them as they shared their culture with her. Many local cafes let her work their espresso machines behind the counter and taught her various techniques as Steinhauer fostered friendships with the owners. “The goodbyes were hard,” Steinhauer added.

On weekends, Steinhauer and her classmates split into groups and traveled to various locations throughout the country. In San Ramon, Steinhauer’s group assisted with the training of young Costa Ricans as they

prepared to take mission trips to Southeast Asia. The training entailed Bible study and methods of connecting with people from different cultures through the common thread of Jesus Christ’s teachings. “Many of them were young adults like us. We worked alongside them, encouraging and challenging them,” Steinhauer said. Atlas Travel and Study Abroad partners with different ministries in Costa Rica to allow its members to assist with missionary training. Before embarking on her most recent trip, Steinhauer had a vision to open her own coffee shop in South America to raise funds for survivors of sex trafficking and domestic abuse. Her vision has changed slightly, and she now hopes to open a business in the United States with the same goal in mind. In the fall, Steinhauer will attend Lancaster Bible College to study business administration and to minor in intercultural studies.

“(As a result of studying abroad,) I feel way more confident in the pursuit of my calling and purpose in this world,” Steinhauer said. “I’m open to my path changing and being led by the Lord, but I’m pursuing coffee because I love it. I’ve seen myself grow so much through it.”

Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County. These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after. Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister. The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from

Frozen Foods

working, and she was left without insurance or an income. Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000.

Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years, the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains its largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”

Help the Fight is always looking for volunteers; those interested in volunteering can contact the office for more information.

Community improvement grants awarded

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity. Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s

operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and

York Fresh Food Farms.

All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention, reduction and recovery, and diversion of food waste from landfills. Community gardens are eligible for funding but must have a food waste prevention, reduction or recovery component, such as education.

Since 2021, the Healing the Planet program has awarded grants to 110 recipients for projects connecting communities to green spaces and

improving or helping to protect local waterways and water resources.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility and a respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., has more than 30 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. Middle school

The names of all eighthgraders on the honor roll were read aloud, and students were highlighted for their accomplishments in each department. The Academic Achievement Award was given to eighth-graders who remained at the top of the honor roll for the entirety of middle school; after being named, each student received a certificate for the achievement. Additionally, students were honored for athletic achievements, participation in Student Council and other accomplishments.

“We recognize a lot of things beyond academic achievements,” said Alicia Kowitz, principal of Martin Meylin Middle School. “Students who might not always achieve high academic honors or extracurriculars need to be recognized as well.”

The George Myers Leadership Award was granted to Cooper Hillen. Each year, the award is given to one eighthgrader who has demonstrated strong leadership skills, leading by example and being the best student he or she can be. “Cooper was really recognized by his quiet leadership. He led by example through his actions and words,” said Kowitz. “His behavior resonated with the staff, and we were happy to present him with the award.” Hillen’s par-

ents and grandparents were present at the ceremony to watch him receive the award.

The George Myers Leadership Award is named after the first principal of the school, who served in the role from 1967 to 1987. Myers’ daughter, Maurine Myers Dukes, created the award in his honor in 1992, and it has been given out every year since. Teachers nominate students for the award, and the recipient is selected through a vote of the entire faculty.

The awards ceremony also featured several rounds of tugof-war between students and teachers. Teams representing each grade and the school’s staff members faced off in the tournament. Students were selected for each team through the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). Through PBIS, students earn tickets by exhibiting positive behavior at school. The students may redeem tickets for small prizes and candy during their lunch period or submit them in a drawing box to be chosen for the tug-of-war tournament at the end of the year. “PBIS is a school-wide initiative to focus on positive reinforcement, rather than negative reinforcement,” Kowitz said. “We’ve seen a decrease in repetitive (negative) behaviors ever since we implemented it.”

One-and-a-half-hour live sessions will take place on Wednesday, July 12, at 6 p.m. virtually and on Tuesday, July 18, at 6 p.m. in person. All inperson sessions take place at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster.

The information sessions are designed for families that want to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care. During each program, families will receive an introduction to the roles, expectations, and approval process for COBYS resource families.

The sessions are free and place no obligation on those attending. Child care is not provided. For more information or to reserve a space or receive the recorded portion of the program, contact a COBYS resource home coordinator at 717-656-6580 or careforkids@cobys.org. To learn more about COBYS, visit www.cobys.org.

L-S senior awarded scholarship

The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) Democratic Club 2023 Educational Scholarship for Community Service was presented in a recent awards assembly at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Madison Baker, a graduating senior of Lampeter-Strasburg High School.

Criteria for the scholarship included both classroom excellence and a record of giving back to the community through volunteer service, particularly to those who are underserved.

Madison’s success in Advanced Placement and other challenging courses earned her membership in the National Honor Society and the L-S Science Burrowes Scholar Award.

Madison intends to major in biochemistry in college, with a goal of creating pharmaceuticals and therapies to cure diseases and allevieate human suffering. Madison saw her grandmother struggle with cancer and is committed to advance treatment of this disease. She has been accepted at several colleges, including University of Delaware and North Carolina State University.

Madison has focused her energy on community service volunteer activities throughout high school. She volunteered at Water Street Mission, a refuge for abused women, those fighting substance abuse and residents in need and immigrants in Lancaster County.

Madison also spent many hours volunteering on various soccer fields. As captain of her soccer team, Madison shared skills with young girls just learning the game by being a volunteer coach and supervisor in Lancaster County youth leagues and summer camps. She is committed to continuing volunteer activities through a lifetime of community service.
