Parks Foundation To Present Car Show
Look Inside
Saving The Lives Of Loved Ones BY ANN MEAD ASH
he Strasburg Community Parks Foundation will host its second annual car show on Saturday, July 16, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave. Proceeds will benefit the Strasburg Community Park. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Saturday, July 23. “We were thrilled by the turnout last year and know that our car show was very exciting for both exhibitors and spectators,” said Barbara Rathbone-Frank, board member of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and chairperson for the car show. Exhibited vehicles will be on display within the park, behind Strasburg Borough’s Municipal Complex and along Precision Avenue. Part of Precision Avenue will be temporarily closed for this event. “Prize-winning vehicles are determined by votes cast by participants and visitors,” said Rathbone-Frank. “The prize categories are also unconventional, such as ‘I could have had a V-8!’ for a special car with V-8 engines and ‘You Had Me in Stitches’ for the vehicle with the best upholstery.” Award winners will be recognized during the final hour of the show. Last year’s show had over 200 vehicles on display. “Cars just seem to stir passion within some folks,” shared Fred Witmer, a classic car owner and volunteer. “I know the exhibitors loved the all attention their vehicles received from spectators.”
“Project Lifesaver is for people who have cognitive impairment that makes them prone to wander,” said Kelly Osborne, community services officer and Project Lifesaver coordinator with the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster County. Now that the State Police officers serving in Lancaster are affiliated with Project Lifesaver, the service is available in all areas of the county. Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. “Should a (participant) go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department. (Police officers) plug in the frequency to pick up that specific transmitter,” explained Osborne, who noted that the equipment See Project Lifesaver pg 3
Car enthusiasts are invited to enjoy the display of vehicles at the second annual car show in Strasburg Community Park. Jeff Primaldi (bottom photo) promoted the car show with magnets on his 1968 Chevy Nova during Strasburg’s Memorial Day Parade.
In addition to viewing the vehicles, visitors may listen to music played by DJ Rockin’ Roy Probst, including tunes with auto-related themes. There will be door prizes and giveaway drawings, as well. A shaded dining area will provide a place to eat food such as Italian ice, hand-dipped ice cream and other items, which can be purchased at several on-site several food trucks. Activities for children will include games operated by volunteers from the Strasburg-Heisler Library, which will be closed on July 16. The Lancaster County Bookmobile will be parked at the event.
“We’re planning for a fun day where people of all ages can enjoy the cars on display as well as our beautiful park that features native wildflowers, grasses and trees,” said Justin Tekely, chairman of the Park Foundation’s development committee. The Lancaster County Art Association, located next to the park, will open its galleries to visitors, as well. “Our galleries will be open during the car show and include two displays: ‘Farm to Table’ and ‘Road Show,’” shared Carol Herr, Art Association gallery director. “‘Road Show’ will feature art that depicts vacations and vehicles.” In
addition, some prints of works displayed in these shows will be available for purchase. Registration for car show exhibitors is by donation and will take place on the day of the show. The show is free of charge for spectators, and parking will be available in nearby streets. Handicappedaccessible parking will be available off Hampden Drive. For further information and updates about the car show, visit www.strasburgpark.org or www.face book.com/strasburgcommunity park or contact Rathbone-Frank at 717-572-6830.

Project Lifesaver from pg 1 utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Osborne added that use of the system minimizes time and resources, needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes.
In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization, in 2008. Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched
from that location. Full membership police agencies that house Project Lifesaver equipment, in addition to West Hempfield, are the Lancaster City Bureau, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Manheim Township, New Holland/Earl Township, Strasburg Borough, and West Lampeter Township. Other areas of Lancaster County are covered by Troop J, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The program is funded by The Pilot Club and Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. Osborne noted that people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, Down syndrome, or traumantic brain injury are good candidates for this life-saving technology.
Noting that many of these individuals are cared for at home, she said, “Because of their conditions, it is imperative that (these individuals) are found quickly. This program is like an additional safety net.” Families of Project Lifesaver participants complete an interview process and sign a contract saying they will abide by obligations, such as testing the bracelet battery daily. There is a cost to cover equipment, but Osborne noted that scholarships are available. “We don’t want to turn anyone away because of finances,” said Osborne. To enroll an individual with Project Lifesaver, readers may call 443-224-0569 or 717572-2682.

By the time people reach their 50th birthday, many have begun to imagine what their life in retirement may look like. People may seek ways to reduce their financial load in anticipation of the day when they will no longer work. Cutting back need not
be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money. - Address unsecured debt. Unsecured debt, which can include credit card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collat-
eral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra
each month so the debts are paid off as soon as possible. - Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should See Tips For Seniors pg 10

The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time people reach their late 30s and early 40s, many of them are balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities may be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University
found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it
Physical activity is vital to overall health. The World Health Organization (WHO) says limiting time spent being idle and taking advantage of opportunities to get moving even if it’s just a little bit of exercise - can go a long way toward improving overall health. cise. Those with chronic pain or illness sometimes find that exercising for more than a few minutes can be challenging. Even brief periods of exercise can pay dividends, and there are various approaches people can take to work around mobility and other issues. Explore chair exercises. Just because you are seated doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout. Seated chair exercises can work various muscle groups. Seated arm rows, tummy twists, overhead arm raises, hand squeezes with a tennis ball, inner thigh squeezes, leg lifts and extensions, and many other exercises can be customized to be performed in a chair. Work out in the water. Exercising in the water can assist with movement and reduce strain on the body. See Exercise Ideas pg 12

New Friends from pg 4 building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested a person is in a given activity, the more likely he or she is to stick with it and possibly meet like-minded individuals who may become friends. - Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made
it easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runners’ club may have its own social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and other groups via social media. - Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, theatrical productions, sporting events, and more. Signing up for a bus trip to a local
museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share one’s interests, providing the potential to build lasting friendships. - Broaden your horizons. Just because people are in their 50s does not mean their friends have to be. Friends come in all ages, so don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Making friends after 50 can be challenging. However, various strategies can help people in this age group to connect with new people.

It was the first time the event was held in person since February 2020. The campaign raised nearly $120,000 for the AHA. Katelyn Smith of WGAL 8 hosted the dinner program, which recognized event sponsors and volunteers for their contributions to the AHA and its work in the community. The event also recognized local health care leaders and presented its first Live Fierce, Take Action Award to Dr. Michael Ripchinski, chief clinical officer at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. The award was presented by Kathy Kravitz of Barley Snyder, which sponsored the award. In addition to silent and

Unsearched U.S. Coin Bags full of Morgan Silver Dollars go to PA residents State zip codes used to determine who gets valuable Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t over 100 years ago and sealed away in three pound U.S. Coin Bags that have never been searched Who gets the Morgan Silver Dollars: Only PA residents who find their zip code listed on the Distribution List below are getting the Gov’t issued coins. steal since everyone who misses the deadline must pay $4000 for each bag,” said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars some dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $4000 for residents who miss the deadline, but for t ho s e Pen n s ylv a n i a residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Bank Bag fee is just $2900 as long as they call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 AM this morning. That’s because each unsearched Bank Bag is loaded with nothing but U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. “With all these collectible U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars up for grabs we’re going to do our best to answer all the calls,” said Lynne. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to cla i m the Un sea rched Ba n k Bags. That means U.S. residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication can claim the unsearched bags of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars found inside. Just be sure to call before the 48hour deadline ends. Q
Q SNEAK PEAK INSIDE VAULT: The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at 8:30 AM this morning when the vaults open for Pennsylvania residents to claim unsearched Bank Bags. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the Gov’t over 100 years ago could be worth someday. That’s because each Bank Bag contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. And here’s the best part. After the deadline each Bank Bag fee is set for $4000, but Pennsylvania residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication and beat the deadline cover just $2900 which is a real steal for these unsearched Bank Bags.

If you miss the deadline you will be turned away from this offer and forced to wait for future announcements in this publication or others, if any. The only thing residents need to do is find their zip code on the Distribution List above and beat the 48-hour deadline. The Bank Bag fee has been set at $4000 for residents who miss the deadline, but for those Pennsylvania residents who beat the deadline the Bank Bag fee is just $2900 as long as they call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the deadline ends.

“The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for Federated Mint. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, some worth up to 100 times their face value, means unsearched Bank Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars to the general public – I’m being asked, how much are the unsearched Bank Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars and just one coin alone, could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value according to The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from ValuePenguin found that the median credit card debt among individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 was higher than it was for consumers ages 35 to 44. mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now. Since housing costs are many
people’s greatest expense, removing a mortgage payment from your financial ledger by the time you reach 55 could create significant financial flexibility as you get closer to retirement. Individuals over 50 can utilize some simple yet effective strategies to reduce their financial obligations as retirement nears.

45 N. Broad St.; Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St.; Lititz Apothecary, 100 E. Main St.; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear); Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; or Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Participants should note that many Chocolate Walk locations are not handicapped-accessible. Organizers recommended that people with disabilities bring a friend to help them obtain their samples. The Chocolate Walk provides tourist dollars to the local economy. People have participated from as far away as California and from more than 20 other states. Sponsors include Blue Ridge Communications, Luther Acres, and Spacht-Snyder Funeral Home. Over the course of the event’s existence, the Kiwanis Club - which has fewer than 20 active members - has raised over $1 million for local children’s charities. As part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization, the Lititz club is devoted to helping the children of the world one child, one community at a time. At least 150 volunteers are needed for Chocolate Walk. Interested individuals may email LStickler49@hotmail .com. Two shifts are available, and each volunteer will receive a pass to enjoy five free samples of his or her choice. For more information on the Chocolate Walk, including sponsorship, volunteer opportunities, and membership in the Kiwanis Club, call the Chocolate Walk hotline at 717-560-2295 or visit the aforementioned website.
