A decorative sign displayed in the Willow Street home where Nathanael Groff lives with his parents, Tim and Jill, reads “Not lucky but blessed.” Since third grade, Nathanael has carried the nickname “Lucky,” but after surviving stage IV colorectal cancer, Nathanael understands just how blessed he truly is. Nathanael graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 2002 and served in the Navy from 2004 to 2008. After moving back to Willow Street, he worked in auto sales. In the early part of 2017, however, he began losing weight rapidly and experienced debilitating stomach pains. Finally, on June 15, 2017, Nathanael went to the emergency room. Things moved rapidly from there. Along with the colorectal cancer
diagnosis, Nathanael learned that the cancer had spread to his liver. A coloscopy bag was placed on June 19, and a month later, an abscess the size of a tennis ball was removed. Nathanael began chemotherapy in July, which continued into September. Surgery in October removed seven tumors from his liver. November saw the start of radiation therapy five days a week. Chemotherapy, radiation, and constant pain continued through January. On March 20, 2018, a rectal tumor was removed, and he began a chemotherapy regimen that will conclude in September. Currently, he is considered cancerfree, but he will receive PET and MRI scans every three months for the foreseeable future. Due to his illness, the Groffs which include Nathanael’s younger

This view of a farm along Mill Creek shows a fence buffer and upgraded manure pit, two strategies to promote water quality improvement. Lancaster Farmland Trust has received a three-year grant to incorporate strategies like these with its farm preservation mission.
Grant Will Support Water Quality Improvement Thanks to a grant, Lancaster Farmland Trust has incorporated water quality improvement into its farmland preservation efforts. The three-year grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will enable the
trust to focus on the combination of on-farm conservation practices with the permanent preservation of farmland. Linking these efforts is intended to ensure maximum long-term impact on water quality and allow Lancaster County to continue to be the “garden spot” of the region, said the trust’s See Farmland Preservation pg 2

executive director, Karen Martynick. “We believe (that) a big part of the solution to Lancaster County reaching its required Chesapeake Bay reductions and improving local water quality includes protecting our farmland and finding farmers the resources to increase their conservation practices,” she commented. Lancaster Farmland Trust currently has more than 40 farmers on the waiting list for preservation. To identify the strategic farms for preservation and water quality improvement, these farms will be prioritized according to impairment of the local watershed, proximity to surface water, conservation practices already in place, and opportunities for improvement. All farms currently preserved by Lancaster Farmland Trust are enrolled in the Smart Farms program, and many are already engaged in conservation practices on their own. Because Lancaster Farmland Trust annually monitors each preserved farm, the trust’s staff members are able to track the

Through the grant period, Lancaster Farmland Trust will document the practices and findings to share with other land trusts. According to www.lancasterfarmlandtrust.org, the trust works in partnership with landowners to preserve their farms and way of life for future generations - ensuring that farms will be in agricultural use forever, eliminating the threat of development, and protecting the rich, valuable soils - by placing a conservation easement on their property. A conservation easement is a legally enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and the trust restricting real estate development, commercial and industrial uses, and certain other activities on a property that are mutually agreed upon by the trust and the property owner. Each easement is customized to the particular needs and future plans of each individual farm family. For more information about the grant and the water quality improvement efforts, readers may call the Lancaster Farmland Trust office at 717-687-8484.

effectiveness of conservation practices and maximize the financial investment made on each farm. Laura Brenner, communications coordinator for the trust, noted that conservation efforts utilized in Lancaster County include streambank fencing to keep livestock out of streams and reduce farm runoff and erosion into streams, physical improvements to barns with spouting to channel rainwater into designated areas, concrete barnyards, and curbs to keep nutrients in place. Additionally, larger manure storage pits allow farmers to apply manure when it can be used by their crops, instead of when the pit is full and needs to be emptied. Lancaster Farmland Trust is an active participant in water quality efforts within Lancaster County, as well as throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The trust believes this unique approach of combining land preservation with stewardship is easily replicated in other communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay region.

“The Lion King Jr. from pg 1 camp so that blocking and choreography could be learned by the end of the first week. “The second half of the second week, we will be having tech week with costumes and props, said Huyard, who added that he has faith in the talented cast, many of whom have appeared in local theater productions. Lead roles will include Lincoln Everett as Young Simba and Gavin Haas in the role of the grown lion. Riley Fidler will play Young Nala, and Audrey Pavlica will fill the role of her older counterpart. Mufasa will be played by Ian Marcelo, and Mackenzie Neff will fill the role of Rafiki. Derrick Lambert will play Scar. Jada Corell will play the part of the meerkat Timon, and Josiah Henne will give life to the warthog Pumbaa in a full-size puppet costume. Zazu will be played by Darla Rublesky as puppeteer. Bulgrien pointed out that the camp setting, which has drawn students from three counties, is different from other Cavod productions. “We are together 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, said Bulgrien, who added that when the students are not involved in rehearsal she works with them on acting exercises. “We start every day with a devotional, she noted. “Camp is my favorite thing to do at Cavod because you really get to know the students. Noting that the show is familiar to several generations now, Huyard said that he hopes area residents will bring their children and grandchildren to a performance. “It’s such a fun show, he said. “Everyone loves this show. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under and free for children age 4 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-3514040. A discount price is offered for tickets purchased up to two hours prior to a performance. Asked to describe the challenges of staging the well-known “The Lion King Jr. on the Cavod stage with rehearsal time of about two weeks, director Cordell Huyard launched into a series of exclamations. “This is an epic show, proclaimed Huyard. “It’s huge. Working with nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17, Huyard will strive to present a play based on what he called “one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. “The Lion King Jr. will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Amy Rau will serve as musical director, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the show. Camp is directed by Meredith Bulgrien. According to Huyard, other challenges of staging the show are related to the authenticity of the movements and music. Because the costumes are inspired by the animals represented in the characters, the movements will also be inspired by those animals. Huyard noted that the costuming is in keeping with the music and movement. “The costumes are inspired by the animals, but they are still very human, explained Huyard. “The lions wear traditional African clothing with a head piece that is a lion’s head worn as a headdress. We see their faces. Huyard added that all the movements will be choreographed, noting that there will be a complexity to each scene, in addition to African dances, which Morales is specially trained to teach. “There’s a nod to the beautiful tribal dancing (done in Africa), said Huyard. Likewise, Rau is also working with campers to learn words in the several dialects represented in the show, including Swahili. “The singers are doing harmonies in Swahili (throughout) the show, she explained. In early June, when all the campers had registered, Huyard held an audition followed by a meet-and-greet and a readthrough of the script. “(The campers) have all their material and are working on memorization, shared Huyard. Campers were expected to have their lines memorized by the first day of

Incidentally, Price has never planned a 5K event, but she has participated in numerous races, and her brother has organized many. She also has an enthusiastic team surrounding her. Annamarie Dixon has helped to organize 5K races, and fellow team members Trey and Danielle Little and Matt and Megan Boulden have access to useful expertise, skills, and resources. Community members have also offered their support, and Price noted that Solanco cross-country coach Craig Ausel will lend his timing equipment for the race. “The main purpose (of the race) is to
“It’s neat to see how the Lord provides, Nixon added. She shared that the organization would like to expand its offerings to include programs for high school students, and that will necessitate additional funding. Solid Rock also recently hired Corey Alfonso full time as the program director. “As Solid Rock is growing, we had a need to hire additional staff members, Nixon said. Folks who register by Tuesday, July 31, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and will receive a discount on the entrance fee. Discounts for groups of five or more people are also available. They will run a halfmile beginning at the trailhead, and their race will take place after the 5K concludes. Every registered young runner will receive a wristband. Packet pickup will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at Solid Rock’s youth center, 34 E. State St., Quarryville. Tours of the facility will be available. Planning for the new event has been spearheaded by Mary Price, who felt God’s leading in the endeavor. She suggested the idea to Solid Rock Youth Ministries executive director Raeanne Nixon, who revealed that six months previous,

During the school year, Solid Rock Youth Ministries offers after-school activities for students in kindergarten through ninth grade, and attendance each week averages about 70. Additionally, summer programs are available for students who will enter first through ninth grades this fall. The organization aims to provide a safe space for children and teenagers to grow in relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ. All activities are offered free of charge so that finances never cause a barrier to participation. “That’s why we’re raising money, Dixon explained.

! E L A S D A O L K C U TR
Rock Sports Academy has announced its upcoming travel softball and baseball teams. Youths ages 10 to 18 in Lancaster County are invited to try out. The travel team program will start in October, with outdoor practice running through November and indoor practice running through March. After March, practices will move outdoors, and in April, May, or June 2019, depending upon a player’s age group, the travel tournaments will begin. The fall and winter indoor practice will include not only baseball and softball skills training but also a workout program. Softball tryouts for 12U and 14U will be held on Monday, July 30, and Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 6 to 8:30 p.m at Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218-B Miller St., Strasburg. Softball tryouts for 16U will be held on Tuesday, July 31, and Thursday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Strasburg Jaycee Park. Baseball tryouts for 11U and 12U will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Strasburg Jaycee Park. Baseball tryouts for 16U will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m at the Lampeter-Strasburg JV baseball field, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. If players are not able to attend one of these tryout sessions, an individual tryout may be scheduled on a mutually agreed-upon date. There is no charge to try out, but all players must preregister online. The Strasburg-Heisler Library is currently recruiting for two new board members. Library boards work closely with their directors to meet their community’s needs. Together, they create a strategic plan every three years to maintain a course of positive action and attainable growth. Boards make sure that the library operates within a reasonable budget, that policies are appropriate, and that state standards are not just met, but exceeded. Each trustee applies personal expertise for the common good. The skills and experience represented by the members typically includes finance, business, fundraising, event planning, law, education, and local governance. The director keeps in contact with the trustees when an issue arises and on the progress of projects. The director also keeps the board informed of county and statewide events, legislation, and activities. The board works closely with the Friends group to keep fundraising projects attainable and on track. Trustees and Friends also assist in special in-house projects. The board meets once a month, in the evening. At the conclusion of each meeting, the date of the next meeting is agreed upon by the members to accommodate personal schedules. For more information about the board’s current activities, or how to become a board member, readers may call the library director at 717-697-8969 or email staff@strasburglibrary.org.
