Seeing The Color Of Life For The First Time BY FRANCINE FULTON
Randy Litwin of Parkesburg is color blind, which causes difficulties with everyday tasks like coordinating clothing, judging the color of a traffic light, playing board games and even cooking. Litwin, 41, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, along with other volunteers, recently got to experience
seeing colors for the first time thanks to special glasses developed by EnChroma, a company based out of Berkeley, Calif., that produces eyewear for color blindness and low vision. Eight pairs of the glasses are now available to borrow through Berks County Public Libraries (BCPL). The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26. At LS Together’s back-to-school drive, students will receive backpacks filled with specific items for their grade level.
Pioneer Life Together At This Back-To-School Drive bout five years ago, Jenice Weaver and her husband, Glenn, saw that other school districts had ministry-based organizations that would allocate resources for families in need within the district. The Weavers soon realized there was a need for something similar in Lampeter-Strasburg, so they founded the nonprofit organization LS Together, whose motto is “pioneering life together.” LS Together will host its annual back-to-school drive on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 to 10 a.m. in front of the Hans Herr Elementary School, 1623 Book Road, Lancaster. Like last year, supplies will be distributed in a drive-through format. Families will be asked what grades their children are going into so that LS Together
A
can distribute supplies according to the needs of each grade. “We use a generic list from the school for each grade to put specific items in the backpacks,” explained Jenice. Although not required, preregistration is encouraged and can be completed at https://bit.ly/2021together.
“L-S is a family and family takes care of each other.” The Google Form asks parents if their children need socks, underwear, or a clothing gift card to a local consignment shop. Clothing and gift cards will be distributed to families while supplies last. “We feel like if we can help supply
the kids with what they need to go to school, they won’t feel quite as nervous about their first day,” said Jenice. “School can be stressful enough, so we want to give them confidence to start the year off strong and not worry about gathering materials for school.” To the families that participate in the drive, Jenice noted she wants them to feel supported by the community. “L-S is a family and family takes care of each other,” she stated. “We don’t want anyone to feel that they have to do this alone, and they can reach out to us if they ever have a need.” For more information about the back-to-school drive, email office@lstogether.org, search for “LS Together” on Facebook and select the Events tab. In the event of rain, the concert will be relocated to the Strasburg Fire Station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg. The Strasburg Lions Club, in recognition of veterans who are residents of the Strasburg area, will sponsor the event. “I am looking forward to
sitting in the shade and enjoying the concert after missing it last year,” said Strasburg Lions Club member Bruce Ryder. “Folks should come to the concert to help honor our surviving veterans and enjoy the patriotic music that we all know so well.” The band, which will be conducted by Howard Boots, will play patriotic songs, such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Songs of Soldiers,” “Sound Off March,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Other musical numbers will include “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” which will feature Dale Diller on the trombone, and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” with Howard Boots on the clarinet. Lancaster County Office of Aging announced that as of July 12, it still had Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers available for seniors. The vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvania-grown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. Each person is eligible to receive vouchers only once per year. An individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $23,828 for one person or less than $32,227 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. Located inside the church, Blessings Pantry offers short term food assistance to those who have encountered difficulty due to illness, job termination, disability, overburdened financial obligations, and domestic situations. Instead of calling to make an appointment, people can now come to the food pantry during open hours. “We implemented this change because we thought it would be a little less intimidating to just show up rather than call,” said Blessings Pantry staff member Nancy Snyder. “We want people to feel comfortable stopping in because it isn’t easy asking for help sometimes.” Also new to the pantry is a baby section stocked with diapers, formula, soap, lotion, and more. Recently, Blessings Pantry hosted a drive through food box giveaway. “We’re looking to do an activity once

Occasionally, a member of the congregation who works at Wegmans brings produce, bread, and meats for the pantry on Sundays. “If there is a need, we’re looking to fill it,” stated Snyder. “This is a nonjudgmental place. We’re not income-based; we just ask people to come (no more than) once a month.”

Laser therapy has been widely used by doctors in Europe and Asia since the 1970s. The FDA first cleared lasers for use in the United States in 2002. Since then, laser therapy continues to grow in popularity, and helps combat the opiod epidemic. Medical scientists and clinicians have demonstrated the effectiveness of laser therapy in hundreds of scientific studies.

Aden “AJ” Jackson, a rising senior at Solanco High School, is a man of many talents. He has performed in several shows with Servant Stage Company, including “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Bye, Bye, Birdie Jr.,” “Godspell Jr.,” and “High School Musical Jr.” As a student at Solanco High School, Jackson played the role of Donkey in “Shrek the Musical,” Willard in “Footloose,” and the Pirate King in “The Pirates of Penzance.” Jackson plays violin for the Solanco High School orchestra and sings in chorus and Solanco’s Chorale, an elite ensemble. He is active in Boy Scout Troop 58 and is currently working on the requirements for the Eagle Scout Award.
For his Eagle Scout project, Jackson will host a free “Theatre Rocks!” kids’ camp for children ages 8 to 12. The camp will run from Monday, Aug. 9, to Thursday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville. Jackson suggests that kids bring water and a sheet for their toga costume. Camp will culminate in a performance of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” at the park on Friday, Aug. 13 at 11:30 a.m. The community is invited to attend the free performance. Those who attend should be chairs or a blanket for seating. “Theater is so important because it brings people together,” said Jackson. “It will be a really good time for kids to make friends, and hopefully they will remember this experience for a while.”

Back-to-School Fun FRIDAY, AUGUST 6th Middle School & High School Grades (Entering grades 6-12)
5:30pm Movie, pizza, games and prizes Gift cards for school needs!
SATURDAY, AUGUST 7th Our Heartfelt Thank You A few weeks ago we experienced a massive fire. We lost our barn and all the contents, ranging from hay and straw, to silage carts, feed mixer, a new skid loader and many priceless items, including a not yet fully restored ’55 Chevy. With the losses came small and then big blessings. Only one barn cat died, we got the handful of cows and a newborn calf out in time and our neighbor’s houses didn’t catch fire, thanks to the hard work of all the volunteer fire crews. We’re not the first to suffer losses from a fire and can’t imagine those who have suffered the loss of their homes or of loved ones. We are humbled by the generosity of neighbors, friends and strangers. It is overwhelming to fully grasp how fortunate we are to live in a community that wraps its arms around you in a time of need. We started off writing thank you cards and then realized that there were so, so many helping that surely we would miss saying thank you to more than one special someone. Our gratitude to and for: the volunteer fire crews who came quickly and worked tirelessly; all of our neighbors, friends and family who showed up the night of the fire and stayed; our two neighbors who smelled, heard and saw the fire and called 911 before we had a chance to call; all those who showed up with hugs and words of encouragement; the bouquets of flowers and flower beds planted; the prayers lifted up; the giving of time, resources and money without expectations; the meals provided; the offers of hay, straw, feed, anything we needed; those who showed up with trailers of equipment without being asked; the availability of animal housing offered up if needed; the rental shops that didn’t charge rent; all of those 70 plus folks who showed up the day of clean up and spent hours and hours sifting through ashes, sorting metal into dumpsters, going through what felt like a lifetime of belongings, hauling hay and straw out and those using crowbars to pull up barn floor, plank by plank, while dismantling beams in order to salvage the unscathed oak; our wonderful neighbors who prepared the food; and, the neighbors who are still tolerating the plumes of smoke and the smell of smoldering hay and straw weeks later. To all the people and all the deeds done, we don’t even know how to say thank you in a manner that is grand enough to meet the kindness bestowed upon us. We are simply amazed by the acts of kindness and greatness of giving. “Giving is a miracle that can transform the heaviest of hearts. Two people, who moments before lived in separate worlds of private concerns, suddenly meet each other over a simple act of sharing. The world expands, a moment of goodness is created, and something new comes into being where before there was nothing. True giving is not an economic exchange, it is a generative act. It does not subtract from what we have; it multiplies the effect we can have in the world.” ~ Kent Nerburn

Jean Kilheffer Hess, executive director of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), could not help but share a “fun fact” when asked about the organization’s upcoming annual Storytelling Night. “No one knows what the storytellers will say ahead of time,” divulged Hess, who explained that neither the planners of the event nor the storytellers discuss story topics. “Interweaving of stories happens spontaneously,” noted Hess, adding, “Invariably it comes together in a beautiful way.” Storytelling Night, which was first suggested by an LMHS volunteer about 10 years ago, will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. Hess said the format

is simple, but carefully prescribed. “The storytellers alternate and each tells a series of four-minute stories,” she explained, adding that the event has proven popular for LMHS. The free presentation will also be livestreamed at www.bit.ly/AMN21. LMHS welcomes donations to support the event’s mission to preserve history through storytelling. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author of “The Bird-in-Hand Story,” were chosen to speak. Hess explained that each was invited because See Historical Society pg 9

In addition to Litwin, other volunteers who took part in the reveal event were Shawn Fies, 39, of Fleetwood, an elementary music teacher; Daren Ernfield, 41, of Richland, a probation officer; Tyler Steele, 15, a student in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District; and Stephen Macready of Boyertown, 33, an audio/visual technician. Amy Resh, BCPL administrator, was the host of the program, which was attended by Berks County Commissioners Christian Leinbach, Kevin Barnhardt and Michael Rivera. Leinbach said he was surprised to learn statistics about color blindness. “One in 12 males are color blind. One in 200 females are color blind,” he said. “I did not know the disparity was that great.” After a count of three, the men donned the glasses and immediately began looking at the scenery around them. “When I put them on, immediately some red and greens had a bright, vivid and drastic change. I started looking to familiar objects, my car, the balloons and plants to see the difference,” said Litwin. “As I wore the glasses longer, more color changes began to stand out.”
“Now I have to go back and learn colors, but it’s a great opportunity, and I am thankful for it,” Litwin added. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you have never been able to speak.” Before leaving the ceremony, Litwin remarked that his car was not quite the color he thought it was. “For me, I had an idea of what red is, and it’s not (what I thought). Red without the glasses is dark and muted. Now it pops,” he said, adding with a smile, “Now I don’t know if I would have bought that (car).” All eight pairs of color blind glasses are designed for outdoor use. BCPL will add indoor glasses to its collection by the end of the year. All glasses will be housed at the library system headquarters in Leesport and will travel to any of the 23 member library locations when requested. Library cardholders interested in borrowing colorblind glasses should place a hold through the countywide catalog or speak with a library staff member for assistance. Parade Celebrates L-S State Softball Championship BY MONA STEINHAUER
With sirens blaring and lights flashing, a parade on July 15 celebrated LampeterStrasburg’s softball teams’ state championship victory. Escorted by police cars, fire trucks and other vehicles, the team along with parents, friends, administrators, youth groups and others, wound their way through the community, starting at the Strasburg Railroad and ending at Martin Mylin Middle School. Coaches, school administrators and government officials spoke in front of the crowd after the parade. Words like hard-working, photo by Mona Steinhauer

humble, respectful, and amazing were just a few repeated by the various speakers. The Pioneers came from behind to defeat Armstrong 10-7 on June 18 at Penn State University. It was the second state title for the seniors who rose to the top in 2018. In 2019 the team again reached the finals but settled for second place and, of course, last year the pandemic prevented a season. So, in three seasons, the Pioneers played in three state finals. The senior class finished with an 81-8 record overall. The squad was 30-1 with 29 consecutive wins this season. They scored 328 runs
on 128 hits, which included 33 homers, and gave up 58 runs. “Wow, what a run. What we did was amazing,” said head coach Gene Charles also pointing out that, in addition to winning the state crown, the team won their section title, the Lancaster-Lebanon League title and Districts. The Pioneers are Champions. They won with class and made those around them proud to be a part of their accomplishments. They leave behind a legacy and have set a bar of excellence for others to follow. And hopefully, if those youngsters were paying attention, they’ll say ‘I want to be like that.’

His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before teaching English and German at Lancaster Mennonite High School. She is a freelance writer, and her book about Bird-in-Hand, which is subtitled “50 Years of Smucker Family Hospitality, 1968-2018,” delves into the origins and growth of the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant and Hotel and other associated businesses. Hess noted that she hopes the event will change how attendees and viewers see their own stories. “Annual Storytelling Night helps people recognize the incredible gift of our stories,” she said. “It honors everyday lived experiences of people in our communities.” She added that the event is a step toward the LMHS vision of “a world where people reflect on their own stories and learn to value the stories of others across boundaries.” Readers who would like to know more may visit www.lmhs.org.

Many of the world’s current and potential future stars will compete in the event. The players will compete in singles and doubles for a purse of $100,000 - the largest in the tournament’s 14-year history. Dozens of alumni from the event have gone on to achieve successful professional careers, including Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula, Madison Brengle, and Jennifer Brady. Brady is representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. “Most of the funds are raised locally, and we couldn’t do that without our main sponsors,” stated tournament director Wilson Pipkin. “It’s exciting to know that our local community could come together and we could raise funds to offer this free event.” A program that Pipkin would like to introduce to the tournament this year is “Serving Up Aces.” Pipkin plans to contact about 70 to 80 sponsors, asking them to donate $1 for every ace that will be hit during the tournament. “All of the money from this will go to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which serves about 350 families within the Hempfield School District,” said Pipkin.
