he second annual blood drive in memory of Lampeter-Strasburg alumnus Ryan Smith will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St, Strasburg. The date has been chosen to align with what would have been Ryan’s 23rd birthday, and the drive will be held in partnership with American Red Cross. Ryan battled acute myeloid leukemia and passed away in March 2021. “He was always very grounded in faith and family and was a hard worker in every respect of the word,” said Ryan’s mother, Kim. “He had such a kind heart. If you met him, you would never forget him.” Ryan had been studying exercise science at East Stroudsburg University and was a remarkable athlete; he was named Pennsylvania

Kim began the blood drive in her son’s memory after a member of the community outreach group Mitzvah Moms connected her with the American Red Cross. “It was such a success last year,” she said. “I decided I would love to make it an annual event.” The blood drive is not the Smiths’ only effort to help the community; they have actively coordinated multiple projects over the last year and have big plans for the future. In the wake of Ryan’s death, his family and friends have persistently worked to aid their communities in his name. The Ryan N. A chicken barbecue will be held on Monday, Aug. 8, to benefit missionaries Colin and Becca Buffington. Meals may be picked up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at BB’s Grocery Outlet, 581 Camargo Road, Quarryville. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a dinner roll and a drink. To purchase dinners and for more information, call contact Debbie Lowery at 717-715-2033. Colin and Becca became missionaries in Honduras in 2019, serving alongside Legacy of Hope Foundation to aid orphaned and vulnerable children. Legacy of Hope Foundation focuses on the importance of a secure attachment and is dedicated to family-based care, preserving families, and, when necessary, placing vulnerable children into local foster families instead of institutional care in the belief that every child deserves a safe and loving family. The Buffingtons serve as volunteers, and together they are also a certified foster family. Four of their foster children have been reunited with their biological families. In an effort to sustain and grow the holistic orphan care programs, Colin and Becca both serve in a multifaceted manner with Legacy of Hope Foundation. Among their efforts has been launching a sustainability program, Legacy of Hope Coffee. The program sells a premium coffee, with all programs going toward Legacy of Hope’s programs. Proceeds from the chicken barbecue will help to support the Buffingtons, their two boys, and children in need of a safe and loving family. To learn more about Colin and Becca or Legacy of Hope’s programs, email colin@legacyofhope foundation.org or becca@legacy ofhopefoundation.org.

The veterans’ concert has been a yearly tradition in Strasburg for almost thirty years.
theme for the music performed at the concert is patriotism; the primary goal is to honor and recognize those who have served in the military. The veterans’ concert has been a tradition in Strasburg for nearly 30 years and was originally operated and sponsored by the VFW. Once the VFW disbanded, the Strasburg Lions Club recognized the concert’s importance to the community and stepped in to begin hosting it. This will be the seventh year the club has sponsored and organized the event. Sponsoring the annual concert is only one of many endeavors for the Strasburg Lions Club. “The Lions Club

is a service organization,” said member and Strasburg Borough Mayor Bruce Ryder. “Our reason for getting together is to provide service to the community.” The club raises funds by providing labor for events at the Strasburg Rail Road; the railroad then makes donations in exchange for the service. Another significant source of funding lies in the club’s frequent pit beef sandwich and sub sales, which replaced the pancake breakfast. Money raised in this manner is used in various ways to serve and better the community, ranging from sponsoring scholarships for high school seniors to donating to several nonprofits such as local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and VisionCorps. Last summer club members were tasked with constructing multiple handicapped-accessible ramps for residents throughout the town.

When Josh March, owner of emPower Training Systems, 276 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, first heard about human trafficking in Lancaster County during a presentation at Grace Community Church in Willow Street a few years ago, he was struck by its prevalence. “Most people don’t realize human trafficking is a big issue in our area,” he said. “As a father and husband, it really hits home.” In response to what he had learned, the Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) world champion and coach and season nine “American Ninja Warrior” alumnus decided to take action. He will donate a portion of the funds from the obstacle course event he holds to North Star Initiative, an organization that has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than a decade. The organization operates The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, See North Star Initiative pg 8

made available to curious guests. Adjacent to the birthplace is the L, O & S Nature and Rail Trail, a 1.5-mile, looped walking trail that crosses through the surrounding woodland, meadow and wetland habitats. The trail runs along the course of the old Lancaster, Oxford & Southern Railroad, which cut through the property and led to Pilgrim’s Path - named for its role as part of the Underground Railroad. The property is maintained by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS), located directly across Robert Fulton Highway. “The railroad changed the area forever,” said SLCHS president Stan White. “It allowed merchants and farmers to transport goods and travel to surrounding areas and even Philadelphia.” White, who has been with the organization for 18 years, was initially drawn to Lancaster County by the many railroads and historical sites. Since joining the historical society, he has researched and written several books with SLCHS treasurer Mike Roth and dedicated hours to archiving and researching material historically relevant to the area. “We do a lot of our own research, but a vast amount of information is brought in by local families that have resided here for generations,” White said. “People bring in old photos of what the farms looked like and a lot of family tree information.” Surrounding the birthplace, the pasture has been maintained by volunteer Carlton Groff for the last three years. Groff, who previously owned an orchard and greenhouse business, oversees the landscape on the property and has fostered lush flora throughout. “We’ve never had anyone like him,” said White. “Robert Fulton’s mother, Mary, was an avid gardener, so his gardens are a nice way to pay homage to her as well.” Groff also maintains the nature trail and added multiple improvements, such as laying gravel and placing drains. Anyone interested in being added to SLCHS’ list of docents may call the office at 717-548-2679. On Wednesday mornings, those interested in assisting with cataloging information are invited to come lend a hand. SLCHS is primarily supported by donations and sales of the yearly calendar and handmade Christmas wreaths and decorations, which are sold on one weekend in December.
