LCAA To Hold “Still Super” Yard Sale BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) will host its “Still Super” yard sale at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces at the sale, measuring 10 by 10 feet, are
available to the public for a set price, and vendors will need to bring their own table and display equipment. The deadline to register is Sunday, Aug. 21. Although LCAA has a consistent stream of offerings to the community, this will be the first year the See Yard Sale pg 7
The project will make David and Danielle Brenneman’s home more accessible for their son Miles.
Construction Company Assists Family With Project BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
he Brenneman family first moved into its current home six years ago, previously living in a rowhome Lancaster city. The upstairs rooms of the former home were increasingly difficult to navigate for son Miles, who is 11 years old and has cerebral palsy. “Even getting a handicapped parking space was difficult there,” said Danielle, Miles’ mother. “As he was getting bigger, we realized we needed something more accessible for him.” The Brennemans relocated outside of the city to their current home in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, which proved much more manageable than the previous house, but still presented challenges. Miles’ father, David, works for B&B’s Custom Trim and recently began asking around to see if any construction companies would consider completing a project to help them make the house more accessible. After speaking with one of his site managers, David was put in
an expanded laundry room and a carport. A new room is also being added for Miles’ younger siblings, Levi, Isaac and Asher. “It’s crazy how many people are committing time, donating and working on the project,” Danielle said. “We have friends that offered to complete the HVAC and electrical work in the wing, and the amount of people that don’t even know us that have helped out is incredible.” The Brenneman family has held several fundraisers for various projects in the past, including a music festival at Binns Park several years ago, where carnival games, giveaways and face painting were offered. The family received a great deal of support from the community, which was used to purchase a handicapped-accessible van. For more information on the family, visit Danielle’s YouTube channel, “Dani’s Days,” where she provides insight on special needs parenting, offers gardening tips and shares her unique perspective. “I’m an open book,” Danielle said. “You can ask me whatever.”
LCAA artist Carol Dale poses with some of her artwork that will be sold at the upcoming events.

Each year, EGStoltzfus completes a volunteer project in the community to maintain emphasis on its values, and the business was presented with the 2022 Ethics in Business award from the Samaritan Counseling Center of Lancaster. The company promptly began working on the Brennemans’ house in June of this year. “They came in a month or two before construction started and asked us, ‘What is your basic need, and what is your dream project?’” Danielle said. “I told them the bare minimum was that we needed a bigger bathroom to be able to bathe him, and best-case scenario we would have an additional wing in the house for him.” EGStoltzfus drew up a design, and the project was underway to add a new wing to the house. The addition is projected to be finished by the end of August and will include an entirely new bathroom, a large bedroom for Miles,

administrative assistant. “It’s an excellent team-building exercise, and even the lifeguards at the pool usually make their own boat.” Operated for over 30 years, SECA’s mission is to create recreational opportunities for Solanco residents via high-value programs for both children and adults. The association maintains a 15-acre community park that includes an outdoor pool, an inline hockey rink, a skatepark and courts for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Supporting SECA allows recreation opportunities to continue to be offered locally, while keeping them accessible and ensuring activity fees remain minimal. Swim lessons,
water aerobics, a swim team and several lifeguard courses are offered through the pool in addition to day camps, art camps and sports programs over the summer. Boatyard Wars is only one of several events on the calendar for the rest of the summer; teen night will be held at the pool on Friday, Aug. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m., with entertainment provided by DJ Nova. The 33rd annual golf tournament is set for Friday, Sept. 2, and the annual
Doggy Dip will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, once the pool closes. Dog owners are invited to bring their canine companions to enjoy the last swim of the season. Boatyard Wars is free to participate in. To sign up or inquire about other upcoming events or programs, contact SECA at 717-806-0123 or admin@secarec.com. Those entering the competition should include their name, team members’ names, boat name and contact information.
Last year, Boatyard Wars contestants built boats using a variety of methods.

The recurring maritime-themed exercise was first started in 2019 by former SECA director Rick Kerns while looking for new activities to offer families over the summer. Participants, most often in teams of two, are tasked with constructing a boat using only some cardboard, duct tape and a lot of creativity. The winner of the challenge is crowned once the first team successfully navigates the turbulent waters and reaches the opposite end of the pool without sinking. The activity is open to admirals of all ages; last year’s Boatyard Wars saw multiple teams consisting of parents and children alike, with first and second places claimed by a father-and-daughter team and a mother-and-son team, respectively. When the event began in 2019, a modest handful of teams participated. Since then, the community event has steadily grown, with over a dozen boats made last year. “People love that it’s a free, affordable family fun event,” said Celeste Esposito, SECA

Celebrate Although an annual tradition, this year’s community night surpasses previous events in ambition and scale; organizers estimate that over 500 people will attend, and 20 to 25 vendors will be present. “Our goal is to make it seem like you’re on Main Street in the Southern End,” said Tate Weismandel, account executive for the Barnstormers. “We want to bring together the southern Lancaster community and share it with the rest of the county at the same time.” Among vendors already signed up are the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, PA CareerLink and State Farm Insurance in Strasburg. Quarryville Mayor Anthony Cavallaro will also be in attendance to make opening remarks as well as throw out the first pitch. “We get a lot of businesses that can reach people from areas that they otherwise would not,” Weismandel said. The event will feature a variety of attractions before, during and after the game. Tables will be set up to offer activities and informational materials once gates open, as well as a Southern Lancaster County Chamber networking event. Games will take place in between innings, and a firework display will follow the end of the game. Weismandel also said the Barnstormers will recognize various Solanco community members. Returning to this year’s community night will be the Field of Dreams activity, where young baseball enthusiasts will have the opportunity to stand with their favorite player on the field during the national anthem. The Barnstormers will also offer free tickets to Solanco and Donegal Little League coaches and players who arrive in uniform. The stadium has several other events lined up following the community night: First responders’ night will be held on Sept. 16, and an event focused on the Solanco Fair is anticipated to take place later in September. “We see where fans are coming from,” said director of marketing Ronnie Ramone. “These are great opportunities for people to come out to the stadium.” Aug. 13 will also coincide with “Pink in the Park” night to raise breast cancer awareness. For more information on the event or to become a vendor, contact Weismandel at 717-3589842 or tweismandel@lancaster barnstormers.com. Tickets are available at https://fevo.me/ solancocommunity.

Yard Sale from pg 1 yard sale has been held. “We thought this would be a great way to raise funds for the association,” said Patricia Keller, a member of the art association. “It’s also a nice way for artists to sell their work and get commission. It supports individuals as well as LCAA as a whole.” Donations are also being accepted for LCAA’s table, excluding large items, clothes and electrical appliances and devices. Donations may be dropped off at the LCAA on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. “The goal is just to raise funds any way we can,” said Keller. “The pandemic hurt us, and we’re trying to get back.” Similarly to LCAA’s Artist’s Attic sale, the yard sale will offer the general public an opportunity to purchase artwork made by local talent at a discounted price, as well as learn more about the art association, which recently celebrated its 85th anniversary. The Artist’s Attic will be held from Aug. 21 to Thursday, Sept. 8, and all LCAA members may contribute framed or unframed work. People’s Choice awards will be given, and 40% of

the commission on sales will benefit the LCAA. The LCAA has offered many opportunities for the community throughout the decades since its inception, including art classes, lectures and a new show every six weeks. Keller, a watercolor painter, has been a member for 35 years and has helped hang artwork at shows and volunteered time to help with several other projects. “We have a lot of youth classes,” Keller said. “I want young people to appreciate the arts. It’s important to explore your creativity because it affects so many other areas. Your creative mind affects everything.” The LCAA is always accepting new members and volunteers of any age, with members being granted yearlong access to shows and activities such as art classes. Keller noted that the best ways to support the art association are to make a contribution and come see a show, all of which are free with an opportunity to donate. To register for the yard sale or for more information on the LCAA, call Keller at 717-687-7061 or visit www.lcaaonline.org.

and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added, if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell shared that he was inspired by his student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell, who asked the students what their secret was. A young woman told him, “Jesus Christ.” McDowell did not want to hear about Jesus. “They challenged me until they ticked me off,” he said. “I set out to write ‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ against Christianity, but I ended up spending 13 years documenting why I thought it was true, and that brought me to where I am today.” Seating at the banquet will be limited. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restartministry.org. Sponsorships and tickets will be discounted through Monday, Sept. 26.
So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, the organization is aiming to give attendees the resources to help them blast off by featuring a star of the Christian publishing world Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books. The event will be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Call of Grace Band will provide special music for the event, door prizes will be given away, and a freewill offering to benefit the ministry will be received. For McDowell, who has spoken in more than 100 countries, responding positively to RTCM’s request simply lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is especially important. “How you see yourself will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes
