Author talk will explore the work of Menno Simons
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Mennonite
Life, 2215 Millstream Road , Lancaster, will host a guest speaker event for its members on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. The event will feature presentations from author and Bluffton University professor Gerald Mast, who will explore the life and writings of Menno Simons and his role in the foundation of the modern-day Anabaptist church.
Simons was a Dutch priest who was born in the late 15th century. He was ordained in the Roman Catholic church circa 1515, but he began to question its teachings in the years following. One of Simons’ primary points of contention with the church was the concept of infant baptism, which he believed to have no basis in Scripture; he aligned with the Anabaptist movement and officially departed from the Roman Catholic church in 1536. Simons became one of the most influential figures in the Dutch Anabaptist religion, resulting in the term Mennonite being derived from his first name.
Mast will detail Simons’ ideology and shed light on the experiences that influenced his teachings, including Simons’ concept of “true evangelical faith.”The concept revolves around a hopeful approach toward one’s neighbors, salvation and relationship with God. Mast will explain the five theological characteristics of Simons’ teaching: converting to Jesus Christ in a personally transformative way, confessing to Christ’s work through repentance, creating a covenant within the congregation through baptism, maintaining a community of peace and reconciliation, and serving as a witness against all violence and killing.
“I hope the audience receives a strong appreciation for how Menno influenced the direction of the Mennonite church and a new curiosity about how his writings can help the church today,” Mast said.
In the Mennonite Life Community Room, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions about Mast’s work, which includes a series of articles on the heritage of Pennsylvania Mennonites. Mast
Lions Club will host summer concert
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
As part of its summer concert series, the Quarryville Lions Club will hold a free summer concert on Saturday, Aug. 26, at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m., and it will feature performances from the Nottingham Four quartet and Summit Hill Bluegrass.
Free parking will be available at the park. In the event of inclement weather, the show will be moved to Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville.
The Nottingham Four quartet will kick off the concert by playing a collection of Southern gospel songs. The quartet, which is based out of Nottingham, will return to Quarryville as part of a series of performances in Pennsylvania this year.
In April, the group performed at True Gospel Baptist Church in Quarryville, and it has since offered shows in Oxford, Richfield, Liverpool and Glen Iron.
At 7:15 p.m., Summit Hill Bluegrass will perform. The Strasburgbased ensemble will play a combination of bluegrass and gospel songs, See Summer concert pg 3
was inspired to write the series after he noticed that Simons’ writing possessed an eloquence that distinguished it from many other works within the religion. Mast was also fascinated by Simons’ decision to join the Anabaptist movement during a time when it had resorted to violent methods. Although more translations and editions of Simons’ work exist today than those of any other Anabaptist writer, Mast felt that it had been paid less attention in recent years.
During the event, attendees will have an opportunity to view a 1681 edition of Simons’ writings in Dutch, which will be accompanied by an illustration by Jan Luyken. Luyken was an engraver who created the images found in “Martyr’s Mirror,” a book of stories that remains highly significant to both Mennonite and Amish communities today.
Mennonite Life members may attend the free event in person or via Zoom. For more information, visit www.men nonitelife.org/events.

crafts stations, traditional carnival games and face painting. Participants will have a chance to win prizes at each game, including books, stuffed animals, bracelets and small toys. Members of the 4-H club will offer pony rides for children. There will be no charge to attend the festival, but attendees will need to purchase tickets to partake in the games and activities.
At 5 p.m., more than 10,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to
take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-to-school-themed ducks.
To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/events/duckies.
Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,”
said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”
Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.
For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasengarb@schreiber pediatric.org.

and its four members are Tim Kilby on guitar, Keith Kupp on banjo, Ron McVey on fiddle and Roger Eberlin on double bass. The group has performed in the Huffnagle Park Concert Series for more than four years, quickly becoming a community favorite. A crowd of local fans return to the park each year to catch the Summit Hill Bluegrass’s outdoor performance.
“People come to see friends, hear good music and to get together with the people in their community,” said Gerald Wagner of the Quarryville Lions Club.
The concert is sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club, which took over hosting the series five years ago. The series was started over a decade ago by a Quarryville resident, and it quickly
became a successful and well-attended community tradition. Once the initial organizer was unable to continue hosting the concerts on his own, he approached the Lions Club and asked it to take over the events’ management. Due to the significant role the concert series played in the community, the service organization didn’t hesitate to offer assistance. “He needed the Lions Club to cover the expenses, and we said ‘Of course’,” said Wagner. “That’s what the club is all about: community service.”
In addition to sponsoring the annual concert series, the Quarryville Lions Club engages with the community in a variety of ways. The group regularly supports Solanco Neighborhood Min-
istries’ food bank in Quarryville, offers scholarships to students in the Solanco School District and sponsors a contestant in the fair
queen contest during the Solanco Fair. One of the Quarryville Lions Club’s largest fundraisers is the sale of french fries at the fair.

New scholarship established in honor of Waggoner
The Solanco Cross-Country and Track and Field Alumni Association, created in 2014 by a group of alumni and former coaches, continues to work to promote past, present and future success of the cross-country and track and field programs. The association carries out activities each year to assist current studentathletes involved with both sports. Some alumni donations, $200 to $300 each year, go directly to providing training shoes or clothing for athletes in need, and support specialized track camps as well.
The association’s largest effort is the generation of funds for scholarships awarded each May to student-athletes. The Coach Art Harrington Cross-Country and Track and Field Scholarship, established in 1999, has been awarded to more than 42 students. The Coach Lee Rhodes Cross-Country Scholarship was established in 2017 and has been awarded seven times. New for 2024 is a third scholarship, named after coach John Waggoner.
“The alumni association has raised about $40,000 over 24 years,” said former head coach Craig Ausel, a board member for the association. “Last year, we gave two $2,500 scholarships. Emma Baxter received the Art Harrington Scholarship, and Anthony SolisMorales was awarded the Coach Lee Rhoades Scholarship. And, thanks to a generous donation by former crosscountry and track standout Tom Funk, we are introducing the Coach John Waggoner Scholarship. We have extremely generous alumni, (whose support) we hope continues to grow. We appreciate their support.”
The association also generates scholarship funds from sponsorship signs displayed at cross-country and track meets. “The signs have helped tremendously,” said Ausel.
“Alumni, family and friends purchase signs and dedicate them to former teams, family members and/or coaches.
Some businesses also support the scholarship.”
In addition to the scholarship sign donation drive, held

Youths invited to apply for program
The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its fourth class of cadets which will begin in January 2024. The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, and learning leadership, self-discipline and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a better life.
The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.
The program is open to 16to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be will-
ing to be drug free, to be free of felony convictions and to voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at FTIG followed by one year of mentorship back in their home communities.
For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/Keystone StateChallengeAcademy and choose the Eligibility and Admissions page. To have an application mailed or to talk with someone about the program, contact the academy at RA-MVPACHALLENGE@ pa.gov, 717-861-7767 or 717-861-8831.
The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in
consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence; physical fitness; leadership/followership; responsible citizenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.
Since the ChalleNGe program’s inception in 1993, more than 200,000 young people have completed the program nationwide. The program has been recognized with awards.

Landis Valley to reopen historic house
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.
The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other
facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.
Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
operates 39 Youth ChalleNGe sites in 30 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded. More details can be found at the previously mentioned website.

Golf outing will benefit Iron-Leg
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Join us on a great day of golf and supporting our cause - giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,” said Sean Laukhuff, inviting people to the third annual Iron-Leg Corp. Golf Outing.
The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Tickets will include the use of a golf cart, green fees, non-alcoholic beverages and lunch. There will also be a silent auction, giveaways and ceremonies, including an honor guard flag folding.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, as well as for the longest drive and closest to the pin.
Iron-Leg formed in 2020 when Matt Millhouse and Manheim resident Laukhuff were looking for a way to help children in central Pennsylvania who need prosthetics. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without his right leg, and the organization was started in his honor.
“Since we’ve started Iron-
Leg, great things have been happening,” Laukhuff said. “We have gotten a hand for a kid, and just four months ago, we got our first leg for a local kid from Lititz.” IronLeg helps raise money for high-end prosthetics, which are costly and not typically covered by insurance. Funds raised by the organization are also used to help recipients receive therapy to learn how to use the prosthetics.
Laukhuff noted that Joseph, the boy who recently received a new leg, will be at the golf outing. “He can do all the things right now that his peers can, and he can do the normal activities most kids can,” Laukhuff remarked.
In addition to raising funds, the golf outing is held as a memorial to honor the people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.
“We raise a 38-by-22-foot flag suspended by two cranes a total of 138 feet in the air while bagpipes are played,” Laukhuff shared, adding that an honor guard will do a ceremonial flag folding while a bugle is played at the end of the event.
Items up for grabs at the auction will include a set of
golf clubs; a $1,000 gift card; Omaha Steaks for a year; and more. A banquet dinner will held after the tournament at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering at Four Seasons Golf Club.
Laukhuff emphasized that Iron-Leg would not be able to fulfill its mission without the support from the community. He noted that prosthetic limb can cost anywhere from $5,000 to
upward of $50,000. This year, the organization was chosen by Moose International from nonprofits throughout Pennsylvania as the recipient of its springtime donations. “We received $13,665,” Laukhuff said.
The deadline to register for the golf outing is Saturday, Sept. 9. For more information or to register, visit https://ironleg.org.

Nominations sought for award
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the population identifies as a minority to be in an environmental justice area.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes community tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or plantings, regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.
Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in support of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conserva-

tion. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.
To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmillion trees.org/contact/mld/.
Forms are also available by emailing keystone trees@cbf.org or calling 717-200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.
Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decisionmaking table.
Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.

Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 million has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.
Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.
A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category were veterans’ outreach, transportation services, and homelessness.
Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide
outreach and awareness services to veterans.
The VTF grant also identified $650,000 in funding available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans. Funding priorities for grants in this category were transportation services, behavioral health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.
The grantees include Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga, receiving $40,000 to provide interactive equine therapy to veterans; the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg, $40,000 to support the Military Share program; Good Karma Garage in Harrisburg, $39,100 to provide reduced vehicle repair costs and services to veterans; Guitars for Vets, Chapter 90, in Lancaster, $4,950 to provide therapeutic services to veterans; and rabbitCARES in York, $35,000 for transportation services to veterans.

Native tree and shrub fundraiser planned
The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.
The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification.
Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.
Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information
and inspire improvements within local watersheds.
Preorders are required; no plants will be sold at the pickup locations. To place orders through Sunday, Aug. 27, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ mws-tree-sale.
Plants may be picked up on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
To learn more about the tree sale, visit the aforementioned website. A complete list of trees and shrubs with planting requirements is available at https://tinyurl.com/MWS
-2023TreeSale under the “Tree/Shrub Catalog” tab. To place an order by phone, call 877-345-0691 on Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Idea Incubator applications open
Idea Incubator, a 10-week business development course for local entrepreneurs, is being offered by the Women’s Business Center at ASSETS. The program will offer an interactive and conversational way for a group of aspiring entrepreneurs to learn and work through the early stages of the business planning process while creating the types of positive relationships and networking essential for small business owners.
Upon completion, participants will leave with a solid business model, an outline for community impact, an understanding of what their next steps are and an understanding of foundational business models like developing a minimum viable product and a target market.
While extra consideration is given to the specific challenges and issues for women entrepreneurs, the programs serve all - women, men and racial and ethnic minorities.
Open enrollment will end on Friday, Aug. 25. All applicants will be notified by Friday, Sept. 1, if they have been accepted into the program. A course fee will be due before class begins. Scholarships and payment plans are available upon request.
Cohort sessions will be held in person on Wednesdays from Sept. 6 through Nov. 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Participants must have a business idea or own a start-up business. For more information or to apply, visit www.assetspa.org and choose the “Apply Today!” button at the top of the homepage.
