Friends Group Purchases New Equipment For Police riends of the West Lampeter Township Police Department, also known as Friends of the Force, is a nonprofit organization comprised of community residents, businesses, and friends who work together to enhance the operation of the West Lampeter Police Department (WLPD) by providing supplemental resources, equipment, and funding for pilot programs. The Friends of the Force group has supported the WLPD since 2009. Through private donations, the Friends are able to support the purchases of equipment for public use. Friends of the Force has been working with the West Lampeter Township Police Department since 2009.
“I would say the two biggest blessings in my life have been my house burning down and diabetes,” wrote Kirkwood resident Richard Humpfreys. “That may seem like a strange thing to say, but one thing I have learned is that so much of life depends upon your attitude.” Ever since he was 14 years old, Humpfreys has lived with Type 1 diabetes, but this disease has never held him back from pursuing his dreams and doing what makes him happy. Humpfreys applied to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1961 and, while enrolled, went on a two-month-long road trip to the West Coast. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in education from MICA in 1965, and two years later, he found himself working as a middle school art

SPOTTED LANTERNFLY? “We Can Help!”
For about nine years, Narvon resident J. Arthur Moore, a retired teacher and author, has developed Civil War programs to be presented at schools and libraries. Moore not only writes his historical fiction from the point of view of the soldiers in the Civil War, but also shares the history of the real boys who served in the Civil War in his presentations. The presentations are also part of the Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. This year’s encampment, sponsored by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Courtesy of

lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is especially important. “How you see yourself will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added, if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evi-
dence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell, shared that he was inspired by his student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell, who asked the students what their secret was. A young woman told him, “Jesus Christ.” McDowell did not want to hear about Jesus. “They challenged me until they ticked me off,” he said. “I set out to write ‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ against Christianity, but I ended up spending 13 years documenting why I thought it was true, and that brought me to where I am today.” Seating at the banquet will be limited. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restartministry.org.

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions, sees the goals of the RTCM in space mission terms. “Restart is the rocket booster that helps (students) get into the orbit of sobriety and recovery,” said Santiago. Once students are orbiting among the stars, Santiago
said, they are sustained by connecting to a local church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, it is only fitting that the organization is featuring Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books, and a star of the Christian publishing world. “We reached out to Josh, and he agreed,” said Santiago. “The Lord brought Josh to us.” The event will be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Call of Grace Band will provide special music for the event, and a freewill offering to benefit the ministry will be received. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and co-workers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equiva-
lent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all

forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen
firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the See Climb pg 6

Exhibit Will Display Sculpted Wood Art Kevin Bedgood will return to Mulberry Art Studios in September to display “Dreams,” his latest collection of sculpted wood art. A First Friday reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 3, and the exhibit will run until Thursday, Sept. 30. “Dreams” is about the future. This show is an exploration of design and relationship concepts, seeking new directions of artistic expression. Bedgood has been experimenting with
new tools and processes as well as playing with negative space and how it relates to the shapes around it. He works with new shapes and with ideas and studies the visual impact made by his pieces. Often his pieces will involve turning multiple pieces of wood and then segmenting them and reassembling the pieces. Bedgood has been working with wood since childhood, and the last 25 years have been an exploration of

teacher in Quarryville. After getting married in June 1967 and securing teaching jobs, Humpfreys and his then-wife, Mary Lou Crittenden, moved to Alaska for a year, and after the school year ended, they decided to travel around Europe. After their trip, they were ready to return to Lancaster County and settle into their new lives in Kirkwood. A side effect of diabetes is eye hemorrhaging, and by 1980, both of Humpfreys’ eyes had hemorrhaged. Although he received laser treatment, which stabilized his vision for a few years, Humpfreys knew that his vision problems would negatively impact his teaching career. While thinking of other ways to make a living, Humpfreys remembered stories and traditions he heard from
indigenous people in Denmark and Iceland about little people who dwell in the woods. Humpfreys thought of the little people as gnomes, so he decided he would create a nature trail on his property, where he would tell stories and look for gnomes with children. This was how Gnome Countryside was born. “When children visit Gnome Countryside, I greet them in my gnome outfit: lederhosen, hiking boots, a red gnome hat, and big oversized sunglasses,” said Humpfreys. “The children always laugh at my outfit. I love to hear children laughing.” Each visit starts with an introduction in the Gnomery, where Humpfreys shows children gnome artifacts and talks about the lore of

Every year, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, serves more than 4,000 children. The Schreiber Center provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy services, such as occupational, physical, and speech-language therapy, for children from birth to the age of 21. In addition, the Schreiber Center offers early education preschool
and child care services, recreational programs, behavioral health services, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. “The people at Schreiber are amazing,” said Lititz resident Michael Mengel. When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel, was 2 years old, she received speech-language therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten. “Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of
Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science.
