Girl Scouts complete project to help local wild turtles

On June 15, members of Girl Scout Troop 70624 teamed up with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation to complete a service project at Lancaster County Central Park. The girls collaborated with park naturalist Lisa Sanchez to design and build

a platform for turtles in the pond adjacent to the park’s environmental center. The troop’s members, which includes Junior Scouts from the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award for their participation in the project.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is given to young Scouts who discover an issue in the local community and work as a team to create a solution. Since the members of Troop 70624 have a long history of working with local animal advocacy organizations

and wildlife preservations, they wanted to use the Bronze Award project to help an endangered species native to Pennsylvania. The turtle platform project was inspired by an encounter with wild box turtles during one of the troop’s camping trips last summer. “When you think about

endangered species, you of think of animals in the rainforest and things like that,” said Kirsten Ditzler, co-leader for Gir Scout Troop 70624. “We see less and less box turtles on hikes and camping trips, and after doing some research, we learned that they qualify as an endangered species.”

After the Scouts decided to help turtles with their project, they contacted the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation to learn more about the reptiles and their habitat. The girls identified the need for a safe habitat in Lancaster County Central Park’s pond that would

Every year, Make-A-Wish America grants thousands of wishes for children throughout the country who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses. Wishes can be anything from giving an aspiring firefighter a chance to ride in a real fire engine to arranging for a child meet his or her favorite character on television, or in 5-year-old Willow Street resident Natalie Combs’ case, covering the cost of a trip to Walt Disney World.

After Natalie was diagnosed with leukemia in 2023, she began treatment at Nemours Children’s Hospital. Earlier in the year, Natalie’s team of doctors at the hospital referred the Combs family to Make-A-Wish America’s local chapter for the Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley areas. Natalie expressed that her wish was to travel to Walt Disney World, where she hopes to experience the magical amusement park up close and have a chance to meet her favorite Disney characters. Make-A-Wish teamed up with Lancaster-based manufacturer Woodstream Corporation to make Natalie’s dream come

allow wild turtles to bask in the sun; the animals often use rotted logs and other objects that deteriorate easily or float away.

The Scouts and several parent volunteers engineered a structurally sound wooden platform that could withstand the wear and tear of the outdoors as well as the unpredictable water level of the pond, which fluctuates depending on how much rainfall there is. The girls also earned the Engineering badge by completing the project, as it gave hands-on experience working with power tools and taking precise measurements. Supplies for the project were donated by PPL Electric Utilities and GR Mitchell Inc., a hardware store in Willow Street.

true; Natalie and her parents, Cody and Marie Combs, will have their own adventure at Walt Disney World in the fall.

Woodstream Corporation hosted a celebration for Natalie and her family on July 31 at its headquarters in downtown Lancaster. Staff members welcomed the Combs family with a speaking program, followed by lunch and

activities such as face painting and cupcake decorating. The celebration also included a visit from five Woodstream Corporation employees, who dressed as Cinderella and other famous princesses, giving Natalie an opportunity to meet some of her favorite Disney characters.

special afternoon,” said Jennifer Davis, president and CEO of MakeA-Wish’s local chapter. “(The princesses) made an appearance and spent time with Natalie, and several executives from the company were there to witness the magic of Make-A-Wish. This is a relatively new partnership that we’re thrilled to celebrate and showcase what is possible through our generous supporters.”

Although Make-A-Wish is an organization that serves the entire United States, the funds raised for the local chapter remain in the area, making it possible to grant wishes for children throughout the region. In addition to partnerships with companies like Woodstream Corporation, Make-A-Wish relies on volunteers and donations to fulfill children’s requests.

“It’s important to note that the wish-granting process is more than just a nice thing to do,” Davis said. “It has a long-lasting impact on families and children who have been dealt a difficult diagnosis. Our supporters help us deliver on this life-changing, critical mission.”

items such as jewelry and vacations. A furniture auction will kick off at 1 p.m., followed by a shed and outdoor furniture auction at 2 p.m. and a used vehicle auction at 3:30 p.m. The event will conclude with the prize drawing for the Chevy Trax.

“Death is not a part of life we get to avoid, no matter if you’re rich, poor, young or old,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy at hospice. “Everybody should have the right to dignity and compassion at the end of their lives, and families should be able to spend their final days as family members instead of acting as a nurse or a doctor.”

The first Labor Day auction benefiting hospice was held at Willow Street Fire Company, and it raised a little more than $2,000. Forty years later, the event has steadily grown with the Lancaster community, and last year’s auction raised nearly $1.1

million. Hospice has also continued to expand its capacity for patients; the number of patients the organization serves annually has increased from six individuals in 1980 to 600 patients today. “The community has helped us grow into the organization it needs to serve people here,” Lewis said. “We’ve been really fortunate to grow right on pace with Lancaster County, and we’re serving more people than ever before.”
