5K will benefit Clinic for Special Children

The Clinic for Special Children, 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, will host its annual 5K run and walk on Saturday, Sept. 16. Registration will be available from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m. The rain-orshine event will include a kids’ color fun run, a bake sale, a chrysanthemum sale and an awards ceremony after the race.

The route of the 5K will begin and end at the clinic’s facility in Strasburg, and it will take runners on rural roads between local farms, vineyards and scenic Amish properties. Participants may run or walk the 5K, and the clinic invites runners of all physical abilities to participate. In the past, many participants have finished the race in wheelchairs or while pushing strollers. The kids’ color fun run will be held after the conclusion of the 5K. The proceeds from the event will support the clinic’s variety of services, which it provides to families of children with unique medical issues throughout the area. The clinic offers its patients primary care and

specialized laboratory services such as genetic testing.

The clinic began holding the annual 5K in 2018 as a way to raise funds and awareness for its services, and the event draws

Worship event will encourage unity

The fifth annual Reverberate worship night will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The free event will be held at the park’s outdoor amphitheater from 4 to 8 p.m., and it will feature live music, food trucks and worship activities from multiple local churches.

Multiple food trucks will be stationed beside the amphitheater, including Lickity Split, Chellas Arepa Kitchen, Blazing Swine BBQ,

Cabalar, Halo’s Eatery and Walk-O Taco. Throughout the evening, bands will provide praise and worship music on the stage, and churches such as Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, Reality Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Bright Side Baptist Church will offer worship activities.

Water Street Mission, located in downtown Lancaster, partnered with multiple churches in Lancaster County to create Reverberate in 2019. The nonprofit’s primary goal was to promote service to the church, which is one of its core values. The See Reverberate pg 4

more than 300 runners every year.

“One unique thing about the 5K is that it brings together all of the different communities we serve,” said Kelly Cullen, marketing and communications manager for the

clinic. “We have Amish families and English families who come together to support us.”

In addition to supporting the clinic’s everyday operations, the proceeds from the 5K will assist the

nonprofit with its latest expansion project. Last November, the organization began the construction of a new facility in Gordonville. The new facility, which is located on a 10-acre plot of land located just off of Route 340, will be three times the size of the clinic’s current building. The expansion was necessitated by the nonprofit’s growing number of patients, and it plans to rent the Strasburg facility to a local nonprofit organization after the move.

The clinic hopes to finish the construction of the new facility this coming spring and officially move its operations there by April 2024. When the organization first began to consider potential locations to relocate to, it created a map showing the locations of its patients’ residences to determine where it would be most accessible. Forty-four percent of the clinic’s current clients reside in Lancaster County, but it provides lab services throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

Last fall, lifelong friends Kris Kauffman and Danielle Denlinger got together to have lunch and catch up. Both women brought each other up to speed on what was new in their lives, and they discussed their goals for the future. Kauffman shared her dream of starting a nonprofit to provide services for individuals with special needs. Denlinger told her she had a similar vision, but specifically for equine therapy.

Event to celebrate recovery from addiction

Recovery Day Lancaster, an annual family-friendly festival that celebrates recovery from addiction, will mark its 10th year on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Buchanan Park, Race and Buchanan avenues, Lancaster. Recovery Day is Lancaster’s contribution to National Recovery Month and will include a variety of activities.

The event will begin with a 10 a.m. opening ceremony with city and county officials and the traditional unity circle, followed by the 5K Run for Recovery. The run will start at the Buchanan Park side of the Franklin & Marshall College campus. The Walk for Recovery, with a shorter route, will begin at the same time.

Entertainment will be provided by The Mystic Alpacas, a horn-based band playing popular blues, melodic jazz, originals and

old-school rhythm and blues, and the Quiet Tiger Band, an acoustic duo offering soulful renditions of classic songs, original music and contemporary modern artists.

Visitors may stroll the park until 2 p.m. to explore information and exhibit tables staffed by local addiction treatment professionals and recovery advocates to learn about local and regional resources for addiction recovery, including support groups, treatment options, family supports and holistic health and wellness modalities. The exhibit area will also feature crafting, selfie booths, magic and other interactive activities. Recovery Day will also include games and speakers.

Tickets may be purchased for an all-you-can-eat barbecue lunch prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ of Mount Joy with all the fix-

ings. To reserve lunch tickets, visit www.lancaster countyrecovery.com.

Participants are welcome to bring a picnic lunch if they wish, as well as blankets, chairs and lawn games. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome.

The Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA) organizes the event in collaboration with the 521 Club, a sober club in Lancaster, and local and regional health resources and treatment centers.

The festival originated in 2013, when the director of Lancaster County’s Drug and Alcohol Commission was approached by the Lancaster Barnstormers to find a way for the county to celebrate recovery and promote community education. A group of recovery advocates and addiction treatment professionals organized a recovery countdown during the seventh inning stretch

Museum plans Teddy Bear Clinic

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, will host its first Teddy Bear Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This interactive and educational event is designed to help children become more at ease with medical check-ups by involving their trusted stuffed companions.

Children can bring their stuffed animals to the museum for a full wellness check-up, including checkin, height and weight measurement, listening to the animal’s heart with a stethoscope, and even a mock vaccination.

Stuffed animals in need of extra care can be treated at the Teddy Bear Hospital, where experienced volunteers will mend any injuries or illnesses they may have.

Children will have the opportunity to meet real health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other medical staff members from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and affiliates who will share their expertise and answer questions.

The Teddy Bear Clinic is open to children of all ages.

The event is free with the price of admission, which is discounted for students. Admission is free for Penn

Medicine Lancaster General Health employees and children under age 3. Preregistration can be done in

at a Barnstormers’ baseball game in Lancaster. A few local people in recovery were honored on the field, and families and friends gathered in the food tent near the right field for a barbecue. In the following years, Recovery Day grew to include more activities and became a stand-alone event rather than occurring in connection with a baseball game.

Through awareness, advocacy and access, LCRA seeks to encourage recovery within the community for those affected by addiction. LCRA also aims to eliminate the stigma of addiction so that local neighborhoods will become more welcoming to individuals and families working to sustain recovery.

To sign up to run the 5K or to learn more about Recovery Day and its sponsors, visit the aforementioned website.

Shortly after this conversation, Kauffman discovered a farm for sale in Quarryville and asked Denlinger to partner with her to realize their shared dream.

In December 2022, Kauffman and her husband, Lee, acquired Trailside Farm, 787 Valley Road, Quarryville, and they joined forces with Denlinger to create Bridlepath Equine Center. The new facility will offer a variety of therapeutic horseback-riding programs for individuals with disabilities.

Denlinger serves as the organization’s executive director, and Bridlepath will officially opened its doors for participants on Monday, Sept. 11.

Denlinger studied behavioral science at York College of Pennsylvania and has earned multiple instructor certifications through the Council for Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship. Denlinger has spent the last 10 years working for a therapy riding program in York as a way to combine her passions for both

horseback-riding and working with children and adults with special needs.

Previously, the property that Bridlepath is located on was used for crop farming. Since December, Denlinger and the Kauffmans have been remodeling buildings and installing features such as a lounge for parents, a tack room and storage spaces. They also converted a barn into an indoor arena and built an outdoor arena.

In preparation for Bridlepath’s official opening, Denlinger has been training volunteers and offering tours of the facility to incoming participants. The volunteers’ training consists of two parts: the group meets the horses and discusses the expectations of the program, and the volunteers receive hands-on training in leading, side walking, mounting and dismounting and saddling up their horses.

“There are so many benefits to equine therapy. Physically, horses move in a way that mim-

like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

ics how humans walk,” said Denlinger. “Riders use the same muscles as they would walking on their own feet, which helps with balance, coordination and fine motor skills.” In addition to the physical benefits of horseback-riding, horses can help individuals build confidence as a non-judgmental partner.

Bridlepath Equine Center will hold an open house on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the organization’s programs and to meet staff members and volunteers. “We’re excited to be a part of the

Southern End and its surrounding communities,” Denlinger said. “I’m looking forward to serving a population who deserves nothing less.”

first event was attended by more than 1,400 people from a variety of churches and denominations. In 2020, Reverberate was moved to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was transitioned to Long’s Park in 2021 and has been held there since. Water Street Mission has partnered with 77 churches for this year’s event, and it anticipates more than 2,000 attendees.

“We’re super excited to bring together a lot of diverse congregations to allow the community to unite for a night,” said Matthew Clements, marketing director of Water Street Mission. “Our end goal is that people are inspired to go out and love their neighbors.”

Water Street Mission is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services

to people in need throughout Lancaster County. Water Street Mission is centered around Christian values, and it incorporates Scripture into its many community outreach efforts, such as residential programs, a community food bank, career mentoring and counseling services. The organization also operates a health clinic that provides medical, dental and behavioral health services for people who are in need of critical care but unable to acquire it otherwise. Services are offered to those who are uninsured, underinsured or experiencing homelessness. Water Street Mission’s emergency shelter program is designed to assist people who are in need of a stable living situation or who are navigating a crisis.

Lancaster, LEADS seeking Christmas tree Grave Concern sets meeting

The city of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season.

The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for his or

her contribution in a press release and during the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays are over, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.

The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting on Friday, Nov. 24. For more information about the event, visit http://visit lancastercity.com/city -events/lancaster-city-for -the-holidays.

They’ve got the sheet music. They’ve got the technical and organizational expertise. They’ve got the professionals.

The only thing missing for St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is you.

St. Peter’s is searching for singers to join members of its choir for the Sunday, Dec. 17, production of Handel’s “Messiah” at the church at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. No auditions or prior knowledge of “Messiah” is required, but singers should be able to read music. Copies of the score will be available for purchase at the rehearsals, or singers can bring their own copy of the Novello edition.

“It’s a group activity. You learn and get to make friends,” said St. Peter’s music director Tom Berdos. “It’s a way to join with others and make a statement. Singing is physiologically healthy. It’s a chance to work towards a common goal. It can be a real moving experience for

some. It’s different things for different people.”

Berdos and St. Peter’s have already secured 36 singers for the choir, but they’d like to add up to 60 more. On the day of the show, the choir will join with four professional soloists and a 24-member professional orchestra to produce the legendary oratorio.

Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s, and they will be conducted each Thursday - except Thanksgiving, Nov. 23 - up until the performance. Individuals interested in becoming part of the choir should email Berdos at tom.berdos@st peterslutheran.org.

“We have a core group on our singer list,” said Berdos. “We have a good start and a really good mix. We could do it with what we have now, but we’re trying to open it up to the community. We want the community to enjoy it. I’m the

Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County are seeing stars

Science is all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.

The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.

Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great enjoyment from

observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.

“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”

The club’s meetings consist of presentations and lectures on astronomy, and the last half-hour is typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and the club also

participates in outreach events across Lancaster County and beyond.

Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.

“The goal is to get people interested in astronomy and what’s going on in space,” said Lugar, a 76-year-old resident of Lititz. “It’s about people who like to do observing getting together.”

The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz

VisionCorps, with help from the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation, connects low-income individuals and families to eye care doctors in Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. The program provides a free vision examination and glasses, if needed. For qualifying information, call VisionCorps at 717-205-4141.

VisionCorps provides educa-

tion and prevention of blindness services, rehabilitation, and employment to individuals. It serves clients ranging in age from birth to seniors.

In addition, VisionCorps offers programs to organizations and employers about its services. The programs, tailored to fit the needs of the group, include information on common eye conditions, living with low vision, employing people with low vision and tips for living independently.

All the programs are free of charge, as are services offered to clients of VisionCorps. To learn more, visit http://services.vision corps.net/services.

“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources, but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”

As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen science-minded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public

Library about a decade ago.

“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s reached a point where it’s become a place for everyone.”

The AELC sponsors a telescope loan program at the Lititz Public Library. The kit contains telescopes and accessories. For additional information on the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County, go to www.aelc.us.

“Rhapsody in Blue” concert planned

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), led by music director Michael Butterman, will kick off its 77th season with a program featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A free pre-concert lecture will begin 45 minutes before each performance. The concerts will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, who will also perform

his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.

To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all audience members to gather in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, López-Gavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.

Free parking is available onsite. Tickets range in price and can be purchased by calling the LSO box office at 717-2916440 or visiting www.lancaster symphony.org/rhapsody-in-blue.

On the day of the performance, a final dress rehearsal will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m., just before the start of the 4 p.m. show. It is during that time that the choir’s skills will first be blended with the talents of the soloists and orchestra.

“The biggest job is to train the choir,” said Berdos. “(‘Messiah’ is) typically not easy music. It’s going to take some work. But there are people out there who have experience singing. Experience definitely helps, although people who want to explore something

Normally up to three hours long, “Messiah” has been shortened to 75 minutes for the St. Peter’s performance, which will highlight the Christmas music portion of the oratorio. The Dec. 17 performance will mark the 20th time that Berdos has produced “Messiah,” but it will be the first time at St. Peter’s.

“It’s like an opera without stage action,” said Berdos. “It’s about Jesus being prophesied. It talks about Christ being born. It’s about Christ reigning. ... In Handel’s day, he didn’t write it for the purpose of worshiping, but he used biblical themes.”
