On Sept. 15, Steinhauer will leave for Costa Rica to attend a seven-month program through MissionGo’s Atlas Travel and Study Abroad program. The program will entail four hours of Spanish learning and four hours of Bible study during weekdays, and weekends will be dedicated to working in the community and focusing on participants’ area of interest. Steinhauer wishes to work with women escaping abuse and build relationships in the community. To raise funds for her travels, Steinhauer designed and sold custom tote bags, adorned with coffee-related imagery and floral patterns.AtlasTravel and Study Abroad coordinates educational trips to Costa Rica, partnering with Christian youth groups, high schools and colleges to assist participants with the logistics of traveling. The organization manages housing, food and transportation for students and provides direction and hands-on experience in their areas of interest. In addition to her ambition for mission work, Steinhauer has a strong passion for coffee and the surrounding culture, and she has worked at several cafes in Strasburg. Once she returns from Costa Rica, she plans to attend college to pursue a degree in either business or cultural studies to equip her with the tools needed to open her own coffee shop. “I would love to be able to move to a place where coffee is grown and open my own café; it’s such a craft, and I want to combine it with impacting the community,” Steinhauer said.For more information on MissionGo and Atlas Travel and Study Abroad, visit www.missiongo.org.

The Healthy Kids Running Series will return to Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Daniel’s Den Playground in Manor Church Community Park, 530 Central Manor Road. The series will run for five weeks and feature a race on Sundays, Oct. 2, 9, 23 and 30. There will be no race on Sunday, Sept.The25.goal of the series is to provide children with an inclusive running experience that will encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, bringing both parents and children together in the process. The races will begin at 4 p.m., and registration is open to children between the ages of 2 and 14. Each day of the series will include multiple race distances for runners of different ages and abilities; the series will offer a 50-yard dash and 75-yard dash for prekindergarten children, as well as a quarter-mile, half-mile and 1-mile race for those between kindergarten and eighth grade. Sophia Steinhauer has always known that she wanted to travel and impact communities around the world. After graduating from Solanco High School in 2020, she embarked on her first mission trip to Paraguay. “I’ve always felt called to travel to other countries and connect with the communities,” Steinhauer said. “I love traveling, God and people. People are so interesting to me, and connecting with them is my favorite aspect of it. Visiting other countries and meeting new people on a greater scale gives a great perspective of the world.” Upon returning to Lancaster after her first mission trip, Steinhauer spent six months working as a barista at Latte Luv in Strasburg and starting to plan her next adventure. She set her sights again on South America, where she had fallen in love with the culture on her previous trip. “I felt a huge connection to the culture (in South America). It’s lively and colorful, and I’ve always resonated with its freedom of expression,” Steinhauer said. “I knew I wanted to go back and give myself the right tools for individual ministry.”

Recovery Day Lancaster, an annual family-friendly festival that celebrates recovery from addiction, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Buchanan Park, Race and Buchanan avenues, Lancaster. The day will include a variety of activities - the Walk for Recovery, children’s games and crafts, music, holistic health demonstrations, inspirational speakers, and Lancaster County’s largest Unity Circle - along with the second annual 5K Run for Recovery, a vegan meal lunch option, and the involvement of Lancaster County’s special courts for veterans and addiction treatment. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony and the traditional Unity Circle, followed by the 5K Run for Recovery, which will start at the Buchanan Park side of Franklin & Marshall College campus. A Walk for Recovery, with a shorter route, will begin at the same time.
VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team opened its season with a 3-2 marathon win over visiting Garden Spot, Sept. 6. The Pioneers won the first two sets 25-17, 25-17 before dropping the second two sets 25-17, and 25-20 and then pulled out the win with a 15-9 third set result. Stats were unavailable at press time.

FOOTBALL After a disappointing loss to Solanco, the gridiron team went back to work and Friday, Sept. 2 went to work against Penn Manor. The result: a 35-0 blowout.“Ithink the kids knew we made too many mistakes against Solanco,” said head coach Victor Ridenour. “They worked hard to correct those mistakes.”Mistakes gave L-S momentum. Comet mistakes that is. L-S blocked a punt and recovered a fumble in a span of less than two minutes and converted with a pair of touchdowns, giving the hosts a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. They never looked back. Jackson Heeter scored on an 8-yard toss from Trent Wagner and Carson Coleman’s (79 yards rushing, 5 receptions) one-yard run accounted for the early lead. Hunter Hildenbrand added a 60-yard scramble in the second frame and Wagner (12-15 for 175 yards, 3TDs) hit Damoj Gray for a 16-yard strike that pushed the lead to 28-0 at the half. Wagner’s 67-yard bomb to Dean Herr wrapped up the scoring in the third quarter. Peter Fiorello successfully booted five JackPAT’s.Groff and Harry Wolgemuth anchored the defense with seven total tackles each with Tre Spahr and Jackson Heeter each credited with a sack.“Our defense played extremely well,” said Ridenour. “Trent had a good night throwing, and the line protected him well.

“I think we played defense for 60 minutes,” said Swarr. “They were wildly fast. It was disappointing.”

After opening the season with a solid 4-1 win at Annville-Cleona on Sept. 2, the Pioneers did an about face four days later, suffering a 5-0 defeat at Warwick.
“We did lose a number of seniors, but this year’s group continues to be motivated,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. Colin Whitaker (16:38) and Ben Devine (16:52) led the pack. Solanco’s Anthony Solis snuck in for third before Parker Stoner (4th) and Luke Smith (5th) crossed the line. Owen Witmer’s eighth place finish secured the final spot with Andrew Cramer rounding out the top ten place winners. With five runners back, the girls’ squad was also looking to sweep but the determined Mounts, and a first-place finish by Madison Kimmel, led to a 23-33 defeat of the hosts. L-S did place four runners in the top ten and defeated Solanco 26-31. Keira Smecker finished 5th with Merin Kauffman, Morgan Wright and Jaclyn Martin taking 7th, 8th, and 9th respectively. Abby Welchans (15th) was the final counter with Mikayla Coe (17th) and Jocelyn Wolff (18th) challenging for that spot.
“I was happy with how we adjusted to playing on the grass,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “We had some excellent passing combinations and showed overall grit in the circle. Elco is second at 11-4 and Central is a distant third (9-6). “If we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot, we should be OK,” said head coach Mike Chiodo. “We control our own destiny. We’re not as deep as last year but we have four sophomores (Addison Rosa, Drew Wilson, Brady Weichler and Charlie Westerlund) fighting for starting spots so that keeps things competitive.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER With just one scrimmage prior to their first game of the season, the girls’ soccer team suffered an 8-0 result against a Penn Manor squad that was playing their fifth game. “It was a tough start, but I am confident that this experience will be an important chip on our shoulder to motivate us throughout the season,” said first year head coach Taylor Garraffa, last year’s assistant coach. “Only up from here.” In a game that literally seesawed back-and-forth, L-S dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker at Manheim Central Sept. 7. Clinging to a 3-2 lead on Ally Brenneman’s goal in the 55th minute, the Barons scored twice in a six-minute span to escape with the win. Kali O’Connor and Madison Weichler scored the first two goals and Lexi Wetting notched a hat trick in the assist department.
The Section Two Pioneers got off to a great start, blanking Penn Manor 2-0 in the season opener Sept. 2. Dan Marcroft tallied a first-half goal and Jack Frego scored in the 57th minute. Landon Rice and Jack Kelly were credited with assists. “Love beating those 4A and Section One schools,” lauded head coach Chris Garaffa. “Our center backs did a good job controlling their dangerous attack players. The team chemistry is high, we’re confident on the ball and willing to take risks in the right moments to make things happen. But we always have things to work on. “We cheer on the kids crossing the finish line first just as much as those coming around the corner last,” said Dana Atticks, community coordinator of the Healthy Kids Running Series in Lancaster. “Runners of every ability are celebrated. Children with health issues that you would think would hold them back do their absolute best each week and cross the finish line smiling.” Atticks has been in charge of the Healthy Kids Running Series for the past 10 years, becoming involved after each of her daughters participated in the event. “This will be my youngest daughter’s last year she can participate; she was just telling me how excited she is for the season to start. It’s our favorite time of year and the atmosphere is always very positive,” Atticks said. Each day of the event traditionally includes a different theme, such as “Crazy Hair Day,” “Favorite Hat Day” and “Superhero Week,” where children dress up as their favorite caped character and a local first responder shows up to cheer on the runners. The Healthy Kids Running Series was founded in 2009 as a means of building kids’ self-esteem and reducing childhood obesity rates throughout America. The Lancaster branch of the series is operated by entirely by volunteers. In the past, members of the Hempfield High School Anchor Club and cross-country team have assisted with each race and encouraged runners. Ascension Academy will present “76 to 95,” a flute and piano recital featuring Neoromantic music written by award-winning contemporary composers, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. “76 to 95” is a geographical survey of living composers, tracing a route from Pennsylvania to New York City. The composers featured in the program include Daniel Dorff, Valerie Coleman, Jennifer Higdon, Allison Loggins-Hull, Gary Schocker, David Bennett Thomas, and Robert Maggio. The works will be performed by Jocelyn Crosby and Douglas Wimer. Crosby is a 2022 finalist in the National Flute Association’s Alto Flute Artist Competition. She was a 2021 scholarship recipient and performer in the International Galway Flute Festival and was featured on WHYY’s House Concert Series. She has played in the Fulton Theatre pit orchestra and teaches at the Community Music School in Collegeville. The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The program is free and open to theMarkpublic.W. Arbogast will present “The Trolley to Strasburg and Early Strasburg Views.” Arbogast will show early postcards of the trolley that ran from Lancaster city to Willow Street and Strasburg. Viewers will see a map of the trolley route, including the surprising trolley route at Willow Street. The talk will include early views of the town of Strasburg, most from postcards dating from 1910 to 1930. Arbogast will also share information about the early part of the Strasburg Rail Road and its depot at the east end of Strasburg. Arbogast is a retired PPL land manager who worked at the Holtwood and Brunner Island power plant projects. He has an interest in local history and is a postcard collector.

Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) had its first day of school on Aug. 23. Students in prekindergarten through grade 12, who had previously been divided among three campuses, were unified at one campus location for the first time. The American Guild of Organists recently completed its annual national competition in organ improvisation. Robert Horton, organist and choirmaster at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, is this year’s winner. The competition began in the fall of 2021, with the initial application round. Competitors submitted a recording to the competition committee for review, and five semifinalists were selected to perform live at the American Guild annual convention in Seattle. Horton advanced to the final round, held at Seattle’s Epiphany Parish. Competitors showcased their talents with improvised performances that included a melody by New York composer David Hurd and a poem by Seattle author Shin-Yu Pai. Horton was named the winner on JulyHorton6. joined the staff at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in September 2014.
