Reinventing Tradition “Who am I?” might be one of life’s biggest questions. Some people believe that getting to know themselves requires discovering their roots because knowing their history and culture helps them construct their individual identities. It can also enable them to build a sense of pride. One of the early advocates for a Mennonite historical society in Lancaster County was pastor and farmer Ira D. Landis. The first meeting of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was held in May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974.
Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has hosted an annual Maize and Snitz Festival at the Herr House & Museum. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at the museum were able to take a year and a half to redefine the 2021 Maize and Snitz Market Fair. The idea for the upcoming event is to offer attendees a more complete understanding of what Colonial life would have been like for the Herr family. “This is part of the Herr family’s story, but this is also part of the story that related to hundreds if not thousands of people when they came to America,” explained Jason Stetler, digital and communications storyteller for the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. The Maize and Snitz Market Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the historic grounds of the 1719 Herr House & Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous

Thirteen years ago, Oak Hill Fellowship opened in Quarryville with the vision of sharing the Gospel with the Solanco community. Since then, the congregation has met in two different buildings before its most recent location at the former Zion United Church of Christ, 902 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg. However, that property was sold to another entity a couple months ago. Around the same time, the Mount Hope United Methodist Church congregation merged with

Lampeter-Strasburg Community To Have Fun At The Fair The very first West Lampeter Fair was held in 1924, when students attending the West Lampeter Vocational School organized an activity where they displayed their projects. The event took place at the West Lampeter High School on three consecutive days that year in late October. Fast forward to 2021, and the West Lampeter Fair is still running, but much has changed over the years. The fair relocated from the West Lampeter High School to what is now known as the Community Grounds in 1949, and the board of directors currently has 45 members as opposed to the 13 who served in 1929, the year the fair became a legal corporation. Between 1936 and 1973, several contests, events, and shows were introduced to the
fair, such as commercial tomato exhibits, the all-Western horse show, the baby parade, the community play, and the Livestock Queen Contest - now known as the Fair Queen Contest. It may come as no surprise that when comparing the 1924 fair book to the 2021 edition, this year’s book is about 225 pages longer. After 97 years, why do people still attend the West Lampeter Fair? What keeps them coming back? “ We enjoy watching the kids show their prized animals, and the food is always great,” said Aileen Lozzi, who lives in Quarryville. “It is a small fair that packs a lot of fun into the week!” Airville resident Lynne Greist stated, “I enter my canned goods to try and win ribbons. I love seeing all the different entries!”
The 2021 West Lampeter Fair will be held at the Community Grounds, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Sept. 22, to Friday, Sept. 24. Festivities will kick off at noon on Sept. 22, when the fair officially opens. Many activities are scheduled for the first day of the fair, such as a children’s petting zoo, a tractor parade, and the West Lampeter Fair Queen Contest. Last year, Julie Stinson was named Fair Queen and Kylie Turner was the runner-up. Thursday, Sept. 23, will bring tractor games, the baby parade, and a concert with music provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching band. On the last day of the fair, there will be an allWestern horse show, a calf roping contest, and a naming of the winners of the Youth Encouragement Awards. “Getting together with
everyone and seeing how the community supports a cause makes everything worthwhile,” said Donald Welk Jr., president of the West Lampeter Fair. “People can come and enjoy great food, see people they haven’t for a while, and have a good time!” To learn more about the West Lampeter Fair, visit westlampeterfair.com or search for “West Lampeter Fair” on Facebook. “The fair is a good way to promote agriculture because people can see where their food comes from and interact with the community,” stated Welk. “The fair is agricultural and educational, and we have a very good area to keep it that way.” To view photos from the fair, visit www.townlively.com /in-the-community throughout the week.

For the past 31 years, the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) has preserved the history of the Penn Manor area. The CAHS was founded because of a change to the Lancaster County Historical Society, which discontinued collecting and housing artifacts and became a
research and library facility. It was suggested that regional historical societies be formed, and the CAHS was the last to become an official nonprofit, volunteer-based organization. Currently, CAHS is governed by a 15-member board and has more than 330 members. As an ethnographic museum, CAHS shows the lifestyle of a particular group of people

defense was huge for us,” he added. “It gave our offense opportunities. We still need to be more complete on offense and finish drives.” After a scoreless first quarter, Mellinger’s one-yard plunge with 1:22 remaining in the half, put L-S on the board. A blocked PAT left L-S in front 6-0. Defensive highlights included Landon Coronado’s sack and interceptions from Berkeley Wagner (87 rushing yards), Giovanni Malatesta (77 rushing yards) and Beau Heyser (2 receptions for 52 yards). DelGrande, Luke Hines and Jackson Heeter combined for 25 tackles. Neither team found the end zone in the third frame either, but the visitors finally got some momentum in the fourth with Payton Cunningham’s 3-yard run. The two-point run was denied but Mellinger’s oneyard spurt, with 5:12 left to play, and Brayden Smith’s PAT kick made it a 13-point fourth quarter. TENNIS The tennis team ran its winning streak to four straight matches with a squeaker over Catholic (4-3) Sept. 10 but then suffered their second loss of the season, 5-2, over visiting Elizabethtown last Monday. Laura Leaman and Kati Platt (8-0) and Maddie Snyder and Katie Finn (8-4) gave L-S a 2-1 lead heading into singles play against the Crusaders while Kylie Gerhardt (6-2, 6-0) and Platt (7-6, 6-2) provided the winning singles points at No. 2 and 4 respectively. Kylie and sister Ryan Gerhardt (8-5) and Snyder and Finn (8-4) secured doubles wins to put L-S on the board. Wednesday the girls handled Manheim Central 5-2. Up 2-1 after doubles, R. Gerhardt earned a hardfought 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win at No. 1 singles while K. Gerhardt and Platt (7-6, 7-3) won in straight sets. The Gerhardt’s, at first doubles, and Lindsey Steele and Snyder, playing No. 3, both won 8-4. GOLF The golf team collected four more wins last Wednesday, improving to 16-0. Their 315 total was 17 strokes better than Cocalico, who finished second. Matt Wilson’s 73 was the low score at Foxchase. Ben Wilson (77), Gehrig Harsh (81) and Jason Long (84) kept the competition at bay. FIELD HOCKEY Head coach Katrina Swarr’s inexperienced field hockey team is off to a 0-3 start, but she is confident they will turn things around. “We need to quickly learn to trust each other and play together,” the coach said. “Our corners look good; we just need to penetrate the circle on offense. Kara Scranton and Maggie Swarr are combining nicely and Marissa Rice and Troi Heiserman are working hard on offense. It will come.” See Sports pg 9

already part of our congregation but also to the area we want to reach.” Since moving to its previous location on Winter Hill Road, Oak Hill began reaching people in Strasburg, Lampeter, and Willow Street. People also come from Pequea and Holtwood. At its new Quarryville location, the congregation believes it can use the facility as a mission center for the church to continue reaching the Solanco area and beyond. “ We believe at Oak Hill that the church is the people, not the building,” stated Miller. “No matter where we are, we are still here to serve
both the people in our church and the people in our community the best way we possibly can. W hile big things are changing, the core of who we are is not changing.” In addition to holding services and programs at the Mount Hope Road building, Oak Hill will meet in homes throughout the week in smaller groups called Gospel Communities. These communities are the primary way the church members try to live as followers of Jesus through intentional discipleship, intergenerational investment, community outreach, and leadership 5+/ACRES!

Miller noted a connection between the church’s new facility on Mount Hope Road and the congregation’s mission. “It’s so bright here,” said Miller. “I think there’s a sense in which that feels good.
