TheTheater of the Seventh Sister (TSS) will present a production of “Sleepy Hollow” at the Historic Rock Ford and Theater, with opening night taking place on Thursday, Oct. 13. Two productions will be held on each Thursday and Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m., and the final performance will be on Friday, Nov. 4.
The play will be performed on the first floor of the Hand Mansion, which will be altered to portray the Van Tassel family home in Washington Irving’s famous tale. Audience members will follow characters such as Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel through each room of the mansion as the story is told. “We have a dream cast this year; everyone who is portraying their roles are very fine actors that are physically and vocally suited to their roles,” said Cynthia Charles, artistic and managing director of TSS.
Charles became the artistic and managing director for TSS in 2014 and has assisted with several
productions such as “Julius Caesar,” “Tales From the Caretakers” and “Emma the Matchmaker.” Prior to her role with the organization, Charles performed in multiple plays in the area. “I love the quality of the plays we perform; they’re things you don’t generally see elsewhere.
We always love collaborating with Historic Rock Ford and working with artists ranging from emerging playwrights to veteran actors,” said Charles.
TSS was founded in 1989 and has offered several shows to the area over the years, many of which have
been held at Historic Rock Ford. The organization does not operate out of any one venue; past collaborations have been held at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, Tellus360 and Ephrata Performing Arts Center. The upcoming production of “Sleepy Hollow” will feature primarily
local talent, which TSS has relied on following the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of many theaters. For more information on TSS, visit https://seventhsister.com. To purchase tickets for th event, visit https://tinyurl.com/sleepyhollowtix.

Raising PAD Puppies
“He is a Goldador,” said Jenn Rissler, who is raising Honor, a four-month-old puppy for Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD). Honor, who is all black except for one white spot on his stomach, does not look much like a gold breed of anything, but Rissler is quick to pull up photos of Honor’s mom, a white golden retriever, and his dad, a black Labrador retriever.
Rissler became a volunteer puppy raiser for PAD in January, when she received a dog that was soon deemed too fearful for assistance work and released to become a pet. Her second dog, Colby, moved on to his next phase of training toward becoming a school facility dog in early
August. “Children are (Colby’s) passion, and Linzey didn’t want to train that out of him,” explained Rissler.
Linzey is Linzey Zoccola, who founded PAD in 2009. Zoccola believes it is important to match a dog’s personality to the type of work he will be doing in the future.
Rissler has been working to train Honor since he came to live with the Rissler family at 13 weeks of age. He was housebroken within about three weeks of arrival. Basic commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down,’” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently

under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training.
In addition, Rissler takes Honor to two PAD training sessions each month - one private and one group lesson. She has worked with both Zoccola and PAD trainer Terri Willner. Rissler is also tasked with taking Honor into the community. “Experiences are vital,” she said, noting that she has taken Honor to restaurants and on a trip to Pittsburgh. While he is out and about, Honor wears a special vest with a no-pull harness underneath and a Martingale collar.
“(Puppies in training) are allowed basically everywhere,” said Rissler, who added the pups have the same rights as service dogs, providing they are not causing issues.
Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of support.”
For his part, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train. He’s so intelligent,” said Rissler, who added that as a dog lover, she has been excited to learn about high-reward treats and scatter training techniques, which she can now use with other dogs.

will be vending meals at the event and children’s activities will be available, including face painting and craft projects. A silent auction will be held for smaller items.
“We are so looking forward to having the community come together and enjoy our beautiful town,” said Lorna Mentzer, a member of the Strasburg Heritage Society for over 20 years. “We want to remind people what a treasure Strasburg is, with its beautiful homes and lovely gardens. It’s one of the greatest towns in the county.”
Heritage Fest will feature several displays from the Heritage Society’s collection that offer a view into Strasburg’s history. Pictures of Strasburg natives who fought during World War II, the old high school that burned down in the 1940s and various other images relevant to the history of the town will be shown.
The Heritage Society invites locals to bring any old photos or stories relevant to Strasburg’s past to be scanned and added to its collection.
Several lectures will be held on topics relevant to Strasburg’s history, such as the fountain formerly located in the town square and the house of John Shroy, a poet and author who lived in Strasburg. Shroy’s home, built circa 1793, will be open to Heritage Fest attendees and is in the process of being restored to its original state by the Heritage Society.
Tickets for the guided carriage tour will be available in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, located at 101 S. Decatur St., across from the Heritage Society building. The tour will take guests on an educational ride through the town, highlighting buildings that have served Strasburg in multiple ways over the centuries.
“There is so much history in this town,” said Mentzer. “Some of the houses used to be taverns over a hundred years ago. At one time, the building that is now Speckled Hen was actually a blacksmith’s shop.”

Assessments such as quizzes and exams help educators recognize areas where students are excelling and where they might need extra help. In addition to regular tests on their classroom lessons, many students take standardized tests for state assessment purposes.
Testing may come easier to some students than others, but having good study techniques can improve students’ performance on a wide range of exams. The testing preparation resource PrepScholar says it is important to build and maintain strong study habits to help students avoid undue stress and last-minute cramming. The following seven techniques may help foster good study skills.
First, students can try to find value in the lessons. Students might believe that what they learn in school is irrelevant in daily life, which can make the subject matter feel less important and uninteresting. Finding value in what one is learning and seeing how it can be applied outside the classroom may make a student more inclined to learn and retain the information.
Second, it is important to avoid distractions. Study time should be free of social media, video games, and any other
distractions that can pull a student away from studying. Constantly checking notifications can interrupt thoughts and make it hard to learn the material.
Third, students should establish a system and a schedule for studying. Students should establish a routine of studying each day or at intervals throughout the week.
Fourth, it is important to establish dedicated study spots. Students should locate places that work best for them as study and homework stations. Certain individuals may need the quiet of a library or a bookstore while others may do best with the hum of conversation around them or as part of a study group. There is no right or wrong study spot. Maintaining consistency will help the mind to associate a place with studying.
Fifth, students can use grades as benchmarks and motivators. Grades can indicate how well one is learning the material and, in turn, the effectiveness of the student’s studying habits. Students can modify their habits if they find they are not reaching their acadmic goals.
Sixth, students can rephrase the material. If students find textbook language dry and unappealing, they can try putting the material into their own words or rephrasing passages to make them easier to remember. Sharing the material with another person also may improve retention.
Lastly, making a formula sheet can improve study habits. Depending on the subject, students can create a sheet with shortcuts, formulas, or diagrams, thereby arranging the material in smaller groups of information that are easier to digest. Along the same line, writing information down can help improve recall.
By following these study tips, students may increase their potential for academic success.

The event is one of the numerous walks that are held across the United States throughout the year that share a primary goal: raising awareness and funds for poverty and hunger worldwide. When Lancaster’s walk first began at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, the course of the walk led participants through the city and out of the West End. This year, walkers will travel to Buchanan Park and along College Avenue to Pearl Street, ending back at the church.
“As we’re walking through these neighborhoods, people will ask us what we’re doing and often donate,” said Chris Rankin, a longtime participant of the walk who has served as the chair of the planning committee for the last six years. “Some people have to walk for miles to get food, clean water and other basic necessities. We walk because they walk.” All of the proceeds from this year’s walk will benefit two local nonprofits: 25% will be donated to Lancaster Food Hub for use locally and 75% will go to Church World Service of Lancaster. Last year’s CROP Walk raised over $34,000, and the goal for this year’s walk has been set at $50,000. Donations may be made directly to walkers during the event or online at https://tinyurl.com /cropwalkdonate.
The first CROP Walks were held in Bismarck, N.D., in 1969 and York in 1970. In the decades since, the movement has spread across hundreds of communities and raised millions of dollars. This year, the Lancaster event will celebrate its 50th anniversary and recognize the Rev. Alex Veronis, who served as the chairman of the walk for 41 years. Veronis is the longest-serving chairman in the history of the CROP Walk, and first became involved in 1973, when participants of the walk passed through Lancaster on their way from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. Veronis and his family hiked along Route 30 with the walkers, and he chaired the event in Lancaster the following year.
Celebrations will begin prior to the event and resume after the conclusion of the walk, and will include food and music. Matt Barcaro of WGAL will be the event’s master of ceremonies and Rick Santos, CEO of Church World Service, and Lancaster
Mayor Danene Sorace will be in attendance.
The CROP Walk offers a variety of ways for people to participate. Families can walk the route with younger children in strollers alongside people who wish to run the course. For those unable to complete the nearly 3 miles, a short walk consisting of four laps around the parking lot of Annunciation Church will be available. “My favorite aspect of the CROP Walk is that it brings people together from various faith traditions to work toward a common goal,” said Rankin. “It’s an intergenerational event; I come with my three kids. There’s a way for everyone to participate.”

Golf Team Clinches 11th Section Title, 3rd Straight
BY MONA STEINHAUER
The Pioneer golfers clinched its 11th section title in program history and third straight with a 322 team score at Mocassin Run Thursday, Sept. 15.
“It was a windy day, and the greens were a bit hard,” said head coach Mike Chiodo, “so the scores were a bit higher. We’re 25-0 and have a good chance to finish undefeated for the second year in a row.”
Elco sits in second place at 18-7 and they were 30 strokes back at Mocassin Run.
Ben Wilson’s 75 was the lowest score of the day. Drew Wilson (79), Morgan Smith (82) and Addison Rosa (86) rounded out the counters with both Jason Long and Kenny Finn challenging with 90s.
FOOTBALL
The gridiron team posted its second shutout of the season with a 35-0 romp over hosting Donegal, Friday, Sept. 16 in the Section Four opener.
Carson Coleman (16 carries for 92 yards) rushed for a pair of short touchdowns in the second quarter and Hunter Hildenbrand hauled in a 49yard strike from Trent Wagner (10-for-13 for 120 yards) for a 21-yard halftime advantage.
Hildenbrand added a fiveyard run in the third quarter and Jonathan Mellinger (91 yards on 15 carries) scrambled four yards to paydirt in the fourth to cap the scoring. Peter Fiorello booted four successful PAT’s.
“Our line did a great job opening holes for our backs and our defense was stellar,” praised head coach Victory Ridenour. “We still have some things to clean up, but we’re playing well as a team.
“I think our ability to stay aggressive with the run game and our defenses’ ability to pressure the line of scrimmage made a difference down the stretch.”
Caileb Howse hauled in five receptions for 45 yards while Dean Herr added one interception and Harry Wohlgemuth and Jackson Heeter (1 sack) combined for 22 tackles, including a combined seven for a loss, to anchor the defense. The Pioneers racked up 385 total yards and held the Indians to 141 in the shutout.
TENNIS
After suffering two straight losses, the tennis team is back on track. Over the last week they defeated Red Lion 5-2 and then, stopped Elizabeth-
town 5-2, and blanked Garden Spot Monday and Tuesday last week.
They currently sit at 9-2 overall with seven shutouts.
VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team notched its second win of the season with a solid 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 result at home against Cocalico on the 15th.
“I thought the girls played well,” said head coach Sharon Mullin. “I changed the offense from a 6-2 to a 5-1 and the result was more kills by key players (Jenna Hoover and Rachel Mann). Off the bench, Bella Heyser came in with a hitting % of .430.”
Hoover topped the stat charts with 12 kills, 5 blocks and 6 digs. Emily Mullin dished 34 assists, Mann served up 4 aces and Megan Platt recorded 6 digs.
Last Tuesday they met up with the undefeated Mounts of Ephrata and put up a good showing despite a 3-1 loss. Down 2-0 in sets, L-S pulled out a 26-24 third set but couldn’t maintain the momentum, dropping the final set 25-17.
Mullin put up 25 assists and blocked seven times to lead the way. Mann was tops with 10 kills while Platt and Natalie Holland each served a pair of aces. Sachi Singh led with 15 digs.
CROSS COUNTRY
In cross country action last week, the harrier teams turned in medal winning efforts at the Ben Bloser Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Senior Ben Devine recorded the fastest AA time with a 16:29.2 with teammates Parker Stoner (3rd) and Luke Smith (7th) also grabbing top ten medals. The boys finished second (72 points) behind Wyomissing (67).
The girls, who finished third overall, were led by Keira Smecker’s 11th place finish. Jaclyn Martin (22nd) and Merin Kauffman (25th) also secured top 25 medals.
Colin Whitaker was also in action Saturday. He posted a 15:04 to finish in fourth place at the Adidas XC Challenge in Gary, North Carolina.
BOYS’ SOCCER
After securing three straight shutouts, including a 3-0 result over Garden Spot Sept. 15 and a 2-0 final at Wyomissing two days later, the boys’ soccer team suffered its first shutout loss of the year, 3-0 at Elizabethtown last Monday.
“The defense has been playing extremely well, giving our offense the confidence to be creative and continually take risks to try and put balls in the back of the net,” said head coach Chris Garaffa of the shutouts. “That being said, they are doing just that.”
Landon Rice scored twice against the Spartans and Dan
Marcroft added one while Jack Frego and Rice were credited with goals against Wyomissing.
Three different players scored for the Bears who lead Section Two with 32 goals scored to date.
Last Wednesday at home, Jack Kelly assisted Dan Marcroft not once but twice in a 2-0 victory over Ephrata, moving the Pioneers to 6-2 overall.
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team fell to 3-5 overall with mixed results over the last week. Friday the 16th they managed a 2-1 win over Cedar Crest but then dropped a 4-1 result at Elizabethtown last Monday.
Despite dominating the circle with a 15-5 advantage in corners and a 9-6 edge in shots, it was Cedar Crest that opened with a 1-0 lead in the first quarter. L-S didn’t take control until the third, scoring the tying and winning goals just over four minutes apart. Lyndi Wall, assisted by Kara Scranton, and Kenzie Westerlund, assisted by Wall, provided the needed offense.
“Kenzie and Kara had outstanding performances,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “Kenzie scored her first varsity goal, and we moved Kara to midfield because she was aggressive and determined to score. Lyndi had endless energy which allowed us to move the ball down the field quickly and Audrey O’Neil was called upon to play several positions and adjusted nicely.”
Against the Bears on Monday the Pioneer just could not get going. They were down 21 at the half and gave up two fourth quarter goals.
“We had ten corners but only converted one, Tori Heiserman in the second quarter,” said Swarr. “Kara, Maggie (Swarr) and Breigh (Bauer) kept us in it. We had two more defensive saves and numerous outstanding defensive combinations with the backs and Ally Raub, but we couldn’t convert on offense.”
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team notched its first win of the season with a hard-fought 3-1 final against visiting Garden Spot Thursday, Sept. 15.
Sophia Rhodes, in a volley off a corner, put LS on the board early in the game but the Spartans knocked in the equalizer eight minutes before halftime. Madison Baker’s goal in the 64th minute proved to be the game-winner while Leigha Saurbaugh, who beat the keeper with two minutes remaining, iced the victory.
“Leigha showed great composure to score that goal,” said head coach Taylor Garraffa. “The girls have been working hard so it was nice to finally have the score match our efforts.”
In another nailbiter Monday, the Bears broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a pair of second half tallies and escaped Lampeter with a 3-2 victory.
Chloe Bucher scored once and assisted Kali O’Connor with Lampeter’s second goal.

Tax Credits Available To Farmers
A statewide program is offering $13 million in tax credits to help Pennsylvania farmers install conservation practices that can improve long-term viability, keep soil on the land, and reduce pollution flowing into local rivers and streams. Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of no-till planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops, forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.
Chesapeake Bay Founda-
tion (CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since. According to the State Conservation Commission, REAP tax credits have been used on over 3,000 farming operations across the commonwealth since 2007.
To learn more about the Pennsylvania Farm Bill and to apply for the first-come, firstserved REAP program, visit www.agriculture.pa.gov; information about REAP is available by clicking on State Conservation Commission under Plants, Land & Water.

Film Premiere, Book Launch Set
A premiere showing of the film “The Rocky Springs Carousel at Dollywood” will take place on First Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The film shows the carousel in operation in the mid-1990s and its demolition in early 1999.
The Rocky Springs Carousel was brought to Lancaster on Oct. 17, 1999. It was purchased
for $1.3 million in private donations but city politics and other factors interfered and it was placed in storage, where it remains to this day.
Eileen Gregg’s new book, “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel,” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Flash drives containing more than four hours of music from the 1901 Gavili organ on
the carousel will also be available for purchase.
Before and after the showing, attendees will have an opportunity to visit the opening exhibit of two local artists in the galleries at Mulberry Art Studios.
There is no charge for the event, but those planning to attend are requested to send an email to eileengregg32 @gmail.com in order to receive further information and updates.
