Mitzvah Moms Launches Kids’ Program BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ne year has officially passed since Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg created Mitzvah Moms. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” While celebrating Sukkot, the two women realized they wanted to teach their kids how to help others. Initially, Krouse and Harting focused on collecting items for the homeless, but the group then shifted its mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. Now, the group creates gift baskets for those who are struggling with their physical or mental health or are experiencing other challenges. “Mitzvah Moms has been such a gift,” said Krouse. “It has been so healing, not just for the community,
community. Together, Krouse’s and Harting’s children brainstormed project ideas for Mitzvah Kids. Among them were senior citizen visits, making pom-pom pens, cleaning up a park, and building baskets. To launch Mitzvah Kids, Mitzvah Moms is asking for T-shirt design entries. Participants must draw a picture on white piece of paper using markers, crayons, colored pencils, pens, or other drawing utensils; take a picture of the artwork; and email a high-resolution JPEG to mitzvahmomsrock@gmail.com. Children must be submit their entries by Thursday, Sept. 30. For more information on Mitzvah Moms, readers may search for “Mitzvah Moms” on Facebook or visit https://mitzvahmomsrock .weebly.com/.

It’s been an interesting journey,” she noted. By completing good deeds, Mitzvah Moms members strive to set an example for their children. They aim to teach their children how to show kindness and look for ways to love their neighbors. After hearing time and time again from their kids that the name Mitzvah Moms doesn’t fit the kids because “they aren’t mothers,” Krouse and Harting decided to launch a new program called Mitzvah Kids, which will provide children with another opportunity to serve the Lampeter-Strasburg

L-S took the lead for good with two second quarter touchdowns. Berkeley Wagner (9-for-12, 92 yards passing, 52 yards rushing) hit Hunter Hildenbrand (4 receptions) with a 13-yard strike with 6:40 left in the half and Jonathan Mellinger (28 rushing yards) scored from one yard out at the 2:24 mark for a 14-7 lead at the break. The hosts looked to pull away on a 12-yard run by Julian Lopez early in the third, but Solanco closed the gap to 12-14 on a 17-yard run by Josian Forren with 24 second left in the period. L-S chewed up the clock in the fourth and gained some distance with an 8-play scoring drive that resulted in Mellinger’s second TD of the game, a 15-yard run. Defensively, Jackson Heeter recorded 16 tackles, Nick DelGrande added nine and Luke Hines finished with six as L-S improved to 3-1. GOLF In a tune-up for the league meet, the golf team scrimmaged Pequea Valley last Monday at Honeybrook, with Matt Wilson (74), Morgan Smith (78), Ben Wilson (79) and Gehrig Harsh (80) posting solid scores. “The league meet is at Honeybrook so I wanted to make sure everyone was familiar with the course,” said head coach Mike Chioda. “The boys are one match away from our third undefeated season.” GIRLS’ SOCCER After three straight shutout wins, the Lady Pioneers found themselves on the other side of that result, dropping a 5-0 final against undefeated Manheim Township Saturday, Sept. 18. The Streaks held a slim 1-0 lead at the half but pulled away after the break. Last Tuesday in New Holland the girls’ generated four goals in a lopsided win over Garden Spot. Madison Malcolm and Leigha Saubaugh scored before and after the Spartan’s lone tally in the first half. Madison Brubaker and Molly Bucher added second half goals, with Chloe Bucher recording two assists, as L-S pulled away. VOLLEYBALL In Section Two play Thursday, Sept. 16, the Pioneers dropped a disappointing 3-0 result to Manheim Central after losing the first two games by a combined six points. Manheim held on to win 25-23 and 25-21 before pulling away with a 25-13 third game. Hannah Williams led the way with seven assists and

offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times available, visit www.giant foodstores.com/pages/tgc -vaccines or www.martins foods.com/pages/tgc-vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone over age 6 months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.
In addition to flu shots, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies to adults age 18 and above. COVID-19 vaccine type may vary by location. Pharmacies offering the Pfizer vaccine can administer to teens ages 12 to 17. Parental consent is required, and the parent/guardian must be onsite. The COVID-19 vaccine is administered at no out-ofpocket cost. If applicable, an appointment for the second dose will be made at the time customers receive their first dose. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy App.

The City of Lancaster recently announced that it received a $15,000 Healing the Planet grant from the GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. This grant seeks to help build environmental stewardship by connecting families with community green spaces. The funds will be used for materials and labor to build compost boxes and for purchasing composting tools, as well as for supporting education and outreach activities. The city will use this grant to work with Lancaster Compost Co-Ops to expand its community composting program to four additional park sites: Sixth Ward Park, Reservoir Park, South End Park and Buchanan Park. The coop already has similar sites at the Lancaster City Recycling Drop-off Center and Musser Park, with a new community bin recently launched behind Culliton Park at the intersection of Conestoga, Union, and Filbert streets. Compost co-op membership is free, with members expected to participate in an orientation session and contribute approximately one hour of work per month for bin maintenance activities. Community composting sites offer opportunities for engaging citizens in environmentally-related conversations and stewardship, and they are intended to bring people together with a shared sense of purpose and neighborhood involvement, in addition to providing opportunities for art and education. For more information, visit the Lancaster Compost Co-Ops website, www.lancastercompost.us.
