CHOP Buddy Walk will highlight local child

Everyyear, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) holds the CHOP Buddy Walk to raise money for its Trisomy 21 Program, which provides treatment and specialized care for those with Down syndrome. In addition to raising funds for the program, CHOP seeks to raise awareness of Down syndrome by selecting severalof its young patients to honor as Champions during the event. This year, 2-year-old Kennedy Kessler of Willow Street will be among 12 children who will be recognized at the Buddy Walk.

The 22nd annual Buddy Walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way, Philadelphia. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the event kickoff at 10:30 a.m. A ceremonial lap around the field will take place at 11:30 a.m., and the Buddy Walk will also feature a

variety of family-friendly activities such as face painting, a bounce house, carnival games and live entertainment. “It’s a day to bring the families together and to celebrate our wonderful children,” said Kennedy’s mother, Jenna.

For each Champion, a team is created for friends, family members and colleagues as a way for members of the child’s community to show their support.

Kennedy’s team is Kennedy’s Kingdom, and her family has been raising money for the team online and in stores and doctor’s offices across Lancaster County. The funds raised for each Champion’s team directly benefit the Trisomy 21 Program and Down syndrome research.

Kennedy first visited CHOP’s Trisomy 21 clinic when she was nine months old, after her pediatrician recommended it to her family. Since she was an infant, Kennedy has experienced health issues that require specialized care, including See Buddy Walk pg 9

The Southern End steps up to fight hunger

The 44th annual CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 9 a.m. Activities will be offered for children who participate in the walk, and members of the public of all physical abilities are invited to participate.

This year, young walkers will have a chance to participate in a story walk. Pages and illustrations from a children’s book will be stationed

along the walking path, allowing youngsters to read the story as they travel the route. The event regularly includes a task for families with young kids to complete; last year, children took part in a scavenger hunt as they finished the walk.

The walk is organized every year by Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren in Quarryville, but congregations from the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg areas often participate as well.

This year, representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Refton Brethren in Christ

Three years ago, Sarah Short and her mother, Mary Martz, joined the children’s ministry team at Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster. Short grew up as a member of the church and decided to become involved with the ministry after having a child of her own. At the time of Short’s and Martz’s arrival, the members of the children’s ministry team were devising ways to engage young families in the community. Short suggested an autumn celebration hosted by the church, and the rest of the team jumped on board. The See Fall Fest pg 10

CROP walk

Church and St. Catherine of Siene Catholic Church have assisted Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren with planning the walk.

“Over the years, the event has continued to grow thanks to our move to Muddy Run Park,” said Mary Etta Reinhart, who co-coordinates the walk with fellow Mechanic

Grove member Don Trimble. “It’s a beautiful, family- and pet-friendly place to walk, and the event is a great way to spend a morning doing something important.”

Last year, more than 75 walkers from 12 local churches and organizations participated in the CROP Hunger Walk in the Southern End. The event broke its record for the highest amount of money raised by a single walk by accumulating more than $22,000 in donations. Since the tradition was started by the Solanco Ministerium in 1980, the walk has raised nearly $450,000.

Every year, CROP Hunger Walks are held throughout the country to raise money for Church World Service, a nonprofit that seeks to battle international food insecurity.

Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from Solanco’s CROP Hunger Walk will benefit Church World Service Lancaster; the remaining 25% percent will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. Last year, the event raised more than $5,000 for

the food bank, and it was given the Cream of the Crop Award by Church World Service. Every year, the organization gives the award to the 100 CROP Walks that have raised the most money. For more information, visit https://events.crophunger walk.org.

Fundraisers couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.

Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in its eighth year of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.

“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their sup-

port financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the backyard of the community. I literally am sitting here every day thinking, ‘We could do so much if we had more funding.’”

The Freedom Walk is a 2mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.

“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”

“It’s a next step for people to learn about our organization,” Thurston continued.

“People are walking for people who have been enslaved. It’s beautiful because we have survivors who attend. It says, ‘We’re all in this fight togeth-

er. Let’s do better.’”

Founded in 2019, the Freedom Walk will have its fourth iteration this year. In 2022, some 200 individuals took part in the event. Thurston would like to see that number rise to 250 or 300 participants this time around.

Since its inception, the Freedom Walk has included live music at the park to enhance its atmosphere and a survivors’ tent for people to learn firsthand about the devastating effects of human trafficking.

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help.

The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.”

Performance issues that can affect older cars

Modern cars have much longer life spans than one may expect. Not too long ago, drivers often commemorated the milestone of their vehicles reaching the 100,000-mile mark. However, data from Car and Driver indicates the average vehicle now lasts around 12 years or roughly 200,000 miles. More advanced electric or hybrid vehicles may be able to go even farther, with some capable of reaching as many as 300,000 miles.

Thanks to advancements in technology, cars are more durable than ever, but that doesn’t make them immune from breakdowns or the need for repairs. A report from AAA found that more than two-thirds of service calls were for vehicles a decade or older. Here’s a look at some of the problems that can affect older vehicles.

Among the problems older vehicles face are battery issues. The average car battery lasts between three and five years, according to Auto Zone. Batteries tend to show signs of wear at the fouryear mark on average. Corrosion or dirt on battery terminals also can affect battery performance.

Older cars may also experience electrical system problems, caused by anything from burnt-out car fuses to bad or faulty electrical connections and contacts. Corroded or loose screws, nuts and wires can cause electrical issues, which may be more common in older vehicles that have significant mileage on them.

Vehicles may also have trouble with their suspension system, which consists

What certain noises may indicate about your car

of springs, tires, shock absorbers, struts, anti-sway bars and other parts that connect the vehicle to the wheels. Suspension systems regulate the amount of bouncing in the vehicle while on the road and make it manageable. Eventually, all suspension systems wear out, and parts need to be serviced or replaced.

Evaporative emissions are another challenge. The evaporative system consists of a network of hoses, canisters and valves, and it helps vent pressure in the gas tank. An older vehicle may end up with a cracked hose that can cause a fuel leak. Hoses also may be compromised elsewhere in vehicles, so these points should be checked during routine maintenance.

As with other moving parts on a car, the brake system wears down over time, and parts need to be replaced. Squealing, squeaking or a soft brake pedal are indicative of braking system issues and should be looked at by a mechanic promptly. Modern vehicles are increasingly being controlled by computers. These computers handle a variety of features, including navigation and pairing to mobile phones, among others. Over time, systems may no longer work if there are no computer updates available. That means Bluetooth pairing may no longer function, or maps may not be current for GPS systems.

Due to technological advancements, cars and trucks have longer life spans than they used to. However, age is still a factor in the deterioration of vehicle systems.

Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.

- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pock-

ets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.

- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint, often

referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the Ujoint needs to be addressed immediately.

- Squealing sound: A highpitched squealing sound typically means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.

- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.

Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.

How to conserve fuel without giving up driving

In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.

Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.

Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or

stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.

Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.

Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.

Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many

modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.

Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.

These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.

Warning signs that brakes are faltering

Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car prob-

lems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various

problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.

Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.

Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these

signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.

Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stop-

Friendly Action Plan projects, the Summit will highlight a variety of housing options that meet older adults’ needs, affordability and preferences that range from aging-in-place to a luxury retirement community.

Plenary and breakout sessions will feature age-friendly housing solutions that are, or could be, part of the community. These include housing repair programs, accessory dwelling units, shared housing, intergenerational living and missing

middle housing. Local providers of retirement housing will share the goals, services and parameters of their current and planned communities in Lancaster.

requires immediate attention from a professional.

Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.

Fall Fest frompg 1

first Fall Fest at LUMC was held in October 2021.

Fall Fest has become an annual tradition at LUMC. This year, the rain-or-shine event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, from noon to 3 p.m. The free celebration will include a variety of autumn-themed activities for children and their families, including harvest bingo, sack racing, a bounce house, an apple toss, a pumpkin ring toss and pumpkin bowling. During a pumpkin roll, participants will race each other as they push a pumpkin to the finish line. Complimentary hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cookies, coffee and apple cider will be available throughout the day.

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm has donated 150 pumpkins for Fall Fest,

which children will have an opportunity to pick from a pumpkin patch to decorate. Another station will be set up for youngsters to complete other fall-themed crafts, and barrel train rides will be offered throughout the day by Steve Lehman of Holtwood.

Each attendee of Fall Fest will receive a free ticket for a prize drawing, which will include items donated by local businesses. Among the available prizes will be gift cards and various items from Shear Fade, Speckled Hen, Strasburg Pizza, Starbucks of Willow Street, Country Barn’s Barnyard Kingdom and Joe on the Go Coffee Co. Tickets will be drawn a week after Fall Fest, and the prize winners will be contacted directly.

Although Fall Fest is free to attend, LUMC will collect nonperishable food items during the event. Donations will benefit the church food pantry, which offers goods to families who reside in the Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor school districts. The pantry is open on Tuesdays and the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon, as well as Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

“We had over 300 people at Fall Fest last year, and we expect even more this year,” Short said. “It’s been really successful in reaching young families and growing the ministry,” The children’s ministry at LUMC offers Kids Club on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and this program includes

Ephrata Cloister sets Community Day program

In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses.

Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick.

These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as part of Community

Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for chaperones. Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600.

The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.

A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will explain that that not all roof shingles are made the same.

games, crafts, and Bible lessons for children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The church’s youth choir will also begin preparing for its Christmas concert on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.lampeter umc.com.

In addition to its Fall Fest food drive, LUMC launched “Sock-tober,” on Oct. 1. Through the campaign, the church will collect socks for children who are patients at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Until Wednesday, Oct. 25, new socks may be dropped off at the bins located in the church’s narthex and outside of the office. For more information, contact Gabrielle Chapman at gabgirl1015@gmail.com.

Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.Ephrata Cloister.org.

Persons with disabilities who need special assistance or accommodation should call in advance to discuss their needs. Pennsylvania TDD relay service is available at 800-654-5984.

When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’”

Becoming an author wasn’t

Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996.

She had started following her heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said.

She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name.

Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar.

“I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from?

What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’”

Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends.

Paintings presented to police department

Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes presented three original Tom Hermansader paintings to the Lancaster City Bureau of Police on Sept. 12.

The paintings portray the architecture of the three Lancaster City Police Stations, which were previously located on Grant Street and East Chestnut Street, and its current location on West Chestnut Street.

Author Tess Gerritsen See Author pg 13

“When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.”

Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder.

One reader told her he’d

been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’”

The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Tickets will include a copy of “The Spy Coast” and may be purchased at https://lancasterlibraries.org/ fall-author-event.
