(GSS), a nonprofit organization that seeks to combat homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties, recently celebrated the opening of a facility in downtown Lancaster that will offer housing for single mothers and their children experiencing a crisis. On Oct. 15, GSS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated building on North Lime Street, and it welcomed its first clients at the end of October.

people with nowhere to go,” said GSS’s marketing and communications manager, Rachel Shelley. “Lancaster city is one of the most densely populated areas of families that we serve, and we’re happy to be able to take this first step to helping more people in need.”

“It’s a rich opportunity for people to access resources in the city that we haven’t been able to offer before.”

After the ceremony, attendees were invited to tour the new residential facility. GSS had been using the building as an office space since 2017, and it served as a place for case managers to provide preventative services and meet with families at risk of eviction. The building was frequently empty between meetings, and GSS began

The Lancaster County Garden Club will hold a banquet to celebrate its 90th anniversary at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Willows at Historic Strasburg, 1500 Drive, Strasburg. The event will include an educational presentation from garden writer and historian Kirk Brown, door prizes, a buffet-style dinner and a vote to elect the club’s officers.

The banquet will begin with a social and cash bar, and dinner

According to Circle Legacy Center’s mission statement, the nonprofit’s goal is “to represent Native America to our local businesses, organizations and educational institutions, both the enduring traditions of the past as well as their thriving and challenging contemporary culture.”

Despite having no official headquarters, Circle Legacy Center strives to bridge the gap between

the Native American community and the public by partnering with local organizations, attending events and offering monthly programs in downtown Lancaster. Circle Legacy Center will host its next Second Friday program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. The event will feature a performance from Barry Lee of the Native American music group Spirit Wing. Lee will sing

will begin at 6 p.m. Meal options will include salad, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, chicken breast, homemade stuffing, crusted haddock and vegetarian lasagna. Dessert and beverages will include apple crisp, cookies, coffee, hot tea, lemonade and special cupcakes made to celebrate the 90th anniversary.

During the presentation, “Muhlenberg Recreating Eden,” Brown will portray botanist and preacher Henry Muhlenberg to highlight his life and work. Muhlenberg served as the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Lancaster city from 1780 to 1815, and he became the first president of Franklin & Marshall College, which was called Franklin College at the time. Brown will explore Muhlenberg’s prolific research and catalog of local flora and fauna through a first-person account.

Although Lancaster County Garden Club’s membership

includes avid horticulturists and plant enthusiasts from across the county, the group holds its regular meetings at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Meetings take place on the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and each meeting features a topic related to horticulture. During meetings, members display items such as floral arrangements, potted plants and paintings of garden landscapes, club’s leadership provides updates on upcoming field trips and garden tours. Each meeting includes a presentation from a guest speaker centered around the theme of the month.

In addition to the resources available to the Lancaster County Garden Club’s members and visitors from the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips.

Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president, said that the camaraderie between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and vis -

iting their gardens,” Ruth added. Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and they tend to 16 acres of land near Millersville. “We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as the Men’s Garden Club until 2009. Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders.

locations, which include facilities in Phoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square and Ephrata. The Lancaster city location will provide safe housing for up to eight people in addition to case management services and resources. Although the facility will only serve single mothers and children for the time being, GSS plans to expand its services to assist all demographics over the next 10 years.

Another factor in GSS’ decision to offer housing in Lancaster city is the convenience

and accessibility it offers residents. Clients who stay at the facility are closer to child care, have more job opportunities nearby and can easily access public transportation. “It’s a rich opportunity for people to access resources in the city that we haven’t been able to offer before,” Shelley said.

Although the North Lime Street location has officially opened its doors, GSS still hopes to complete two addition projects to add a laundry room and renovate a patio on the second level of the building. Shelley said the organization is seeking partnerships with businesses and other nonprofits, as well as volunteers to assist with the projects. “We would love to welcome people for tours to learn more,” added Shelley.

and use a water drum to play traditional music from the Eastern Woodland Tribes, and he will give a talk about what Thanksgiving Day means to Native Americans. Lee will also explain the meaning of the songs and offer interactive demonstrations of Native American dancing.

“With November being Native American History Month, we wanted to do something festive,” said Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who founded Circle Legacy Center in 2007. “A lot of our programs can get pretty deep and upsetting when talking about Native American history, so we wanted to make this program about music, dancing and having fun.”

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs highlight a variety of topics related to Native American culture, history and challenges that Indigenous tribes face in modern times. In the past, the series has explored historical events and discussed movements such as Every Child Matters, which seeks to raise awareness of the treatment of Native American children in residential schools.

This year, Circle Legacy Center partnered with Franklin & Marshall College to assist with Reckoning with Lancaster, a project supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that aims to shed light on Lancaster’s complex history and relationship to local Native American

In addition to its educational programs and partnerships, Circle Legacy Center frequently participates in community events held by organizations such as the Conestoga Area Historical Society, Blue Rock Heritage Center and Mennonite Life. Members of Circle Legacy Center typically attend events such as Washington Boro Heritage Day and Maize and Snitz Fest to offer demonstrations of Native American traditions and crafts.

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs will continue with an arts and crafts event in December and a movie night in January.
