Scouts Will Hold Flag Retirement Ceremony By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Boy Scout Troop 58, in conjunction with Cub Scout Pack 58 and the Willow Street Fire Company, will host a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. A temporary fire pit will be set up in the field behind the fire station, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, and folks may bring chairs to set up around it. Scoutmaster Dave Haas explained that after a number of years without a flag retirement ceremony, the troop’s charter organization, Willow Street Lions Club, last year asked the troop to resurrect the event. The group has opted to hold one on every Veterans Day and Flag Day. The upcoming event will be held at the fire station in hopes of increasing the event’s

visibility, Haas noted. “It’s us trying to give back on that day,” he said. “This troop is part of the community of Willow Street,” said deputy chief Dave Reese, explaining why the fire company had agreed to host the ceremony. “(We support) teaching the Scouts that you don’t just take our nation’s symbol and throw it in the trash.” United States flags cannot just be tossed on a fire. Instead, retired flags are prepared to burn by being cut apart in specific sections, and the troop members have taken care of that for all of the flags that have been donated to the group. Folks may bring worn-out flags to the ceremony, but these will be disposed of at a later time due to the preparation required. See Flag Retirement pg 6

The response to the archery hunts scheduled for Pequea Township’s Silver Mine Park, 200 Silver Mine Road, Conestoga, was predominantly positive. However, as a result of a legal challenge, the hunt was canceled, and all participants’ entry fees were refunded. Hunters may rejoice, though, as another hunt has been scheduled and a new permitting process has been established. The hunt will be held during the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s late archery season on Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. Hunting will be authorized with a Pequea Township Wildlife Management Archery Hunt permit, and only 96 permits will be issued through a random drawing.

Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver (left) and secretary Cynthia Evans-Herr have announced the rescheduling of an archery hunt for anterless deer in the park. A drawing for permits will be held on Nov. 19. Successful applicants must be properly licensed to participate on the days of the hunt. Archery hunters must possess See Archery Hunts pg 6

L-S Football Crushes Elco in District Opener by Mona Steinhauer

Quarterback Sean McTaggart carried a wet and muddy football 20 times for 153 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the tenth seed Pioneers past No. 7 Elco, 37-0, in a first-round game of the District Three Class 4A playoffs this past Friday night. “We expected a closer game on the road against a team with eight wins,” said head coach John Manion. “It was just incredible how well we hung on to the ball. All three phases of the game we played well. The offensive line did a great job opening holes and 11 different guys on defense had two tackles or more. It was a great team effort, especially on the defensive end.” The Pioneers, who entered the playoffs with a 5-5 record, opened the scoring with a 12-play, 70-yard Photo by Vaughn Brown march that culminated with Lampeter-Strasburg’s Billy Heyser fights off the block by Elco’s Robert Walck during the Pioneers’ McTaggart scoring from three yards out. two-point conversions. McTaggart’s second TD of the night was a one-yard plunge, then a second two-point conversion that pushed the first quarter lead to 16-0. That touchdown was set up by Bryan McKim’s 57-yard burst. McKim added 119-yards on 11 carries. Lampeter’s only score of the second quarter was another long march that went 60 yards in eight plays and finished with an Alex Knapp 3-yard scoring run, extending the lead to 24-0 at the break. The Pioneers outgained the Raiders (7-2 in Section Three) 228-52 in the first half, working 15 first downs to Elco’s 2. The Raiders, who were 2-8 a year ago, finished with 97 total yards to Lampeter’s 313. The visitors tacked on two third quarter touchdowns to cap the scoring. McTaggart found pay dirt, or mud rather, from 20 yards out and Jacob Kopelman blocked a punt that was recovered by Joey Underwood in the

end zone. A Seth Beers PAT settled the shutout. “Joey does a lot of little things that probably go unnoticed,” said Manion. “He had a 40-yard kickoff return, recovered that blocked punt and finished with six tackles, four for a loss. He had a tremendous all around effort.” Joining Underwood with six blocks each was Gabe Frederick and Jake Hines with Kopelman, who also had one sack, Joey Jordan, and Marcus Rosa joining a group effort in the defensive highlights. Next up for the Pioneers, who finished 2-4 in Section Two, is a trip to Berks Catholic (8-2) for a quarterfinals clash. “This week will certainly be a challenge,” stated Manion. “Nobody thinks we can do it so we can play a bit more carefree.” TENNIS After working her way through the District Three bracket, Sarah Capoferri

schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a fourteam men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall TipOff Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancasterrotary.org/event/ basketball-extravaganze-2018. Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership, both organizations worked to grow the tournament, eventually moving to the weekend before Thanksgiving to “tip off” the college basketball season. The tournament was only for men until 2006, when the Professor Terry Green Memorial Tournament added women’s teams to the mix. Proceeds from the Basketball Extravaganza will benefit the United Way’s

Rotary Club of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, a program that works to keep Lancaster youths engaged and productive. The Summer Youth Experience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Experience, the event has helped to fund International Medical Relief, including eye and dental care in international locations; the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Park; School District of Lancaster programs that encourage literacy; Rotary Youth Leadership Camp; International Youth Study Exchange; and a variety of scholarships and grants.

Successful applicants will be notified by mail; those in attendance may obtain their permits that night; at the barn at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26; or on the morning of each hunt day. In addition to establishing the hunting permit, Pequea Township has created permits for firewood and vendors. With a firewood permit, folks may collect downed wood in the park for their personal use. Standing trees may not be cut, and each permit will allow up to two cords of wood for one fee. Gleaners may not drive into the forests, but wheelbarrows will be allowed. “There’s a lot of hardwood along the roads, Evans-Herr remarked. “It’s a lot of wood if someone wants to be industrious. The vendor permit will give permission for sellers to offer food, beverages, or other items at the park. Evans-Herr noted that of the three, this permit has received the most attention on the park’s Facebook page. For more information about the hunt or the permits, readers may call Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver at 717-672-1479.

Archery Hunts from pg 1 a valid archery license and a valid antlerless deer license for Wildlife Management Unit 5B. A fee for the wildlife management permit was established by the board of supervisors during the Oct. 17 public meeting. The decision to host the hunt in the 67acre north portion of the park was approved unanimously by the board of supervisors. Cynthia Evans-Herr, vice chair of the board of supervisors and secretary of the Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board, noted that the park and the surrounding community are overrun by deer. According to her research, 640 acres of land are needed to healthfully sustain 30 deer. In comparison, more than 30 deer have been counted in the park. When the deer are not destroying farmers’ corn and soybean crops, they are eating the native plants in the forests, making room for the invasion of nonnative species. “Our forest is full of invasives, EvansHerr lamented. “We need to do what is necessary to manage our resources. Hunters who want to purchase a wildlife permit must submit a standard postcard with their name, complete mailing address, phone number, hunting license number, and anterless deer license number for Wildlife Management Unit 5B, as well as the words “Wildlife Management Archery Hunt - Late Season. Only one application per hunter may be submitted. The cards must be mailed to Pequea Township, 1028 Mill-

teed a T-shirt. The deadline to register online is Sunday, Nov. 18, and mailed entries must be postmarked by Saturday, Nov. 12. The form may be downloaded at www.millersville turkeytrot.com.

The troop has received several nylon flags from local businesses and hundreds of small flags from area cemeteries. Some of those small flags are from the graves of veterans buried at Willow Street Mennonite Church. One of Troop 58’s commitments to the community is replacing the flags at the graves every Memorial Day. Haas estimated that the service will run for 60 to 90 minutes and will include a special part for veterans. There will be an opportunity for attendees to participate as well. The flag retirement ceremony will be open to the public free of charge, but folks may bring nonperishable food items to the event. Scouting for Food bag dropoffs will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, and the Scouts will return on Saturday, Nov. 17, to collect filled bags. Everything

collected on Nov. 11 and 17 will be given to the food bank at Lampeter United Methodist Church. The troop is hoping to collect 3,000 pounds of canned goods, Haas said. Boy Scout Troop 58 was chartered 78 years ago. The group meets on most Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Scout house, which is located behind Willow Street United Church of Christ, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. Currently, there are nine boys in the troop, and they range from age 11 through 17. Cub Scout Pack 58 is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade. Applications to join the groups will be available at the flag retirement ceremony. For more information about the troop or the event, readers may email troop58willowstreet@gmail.com.

Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda

delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following: LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and

Packing Shoeboxes, Sending Love

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers shoeboxes filled with small gifts and essentials to children in need in approximately 120 nations. National Collection Week will take place from Nov. 12 to 19, when folks may take filled shoeboxes to any of the designated drop-off sites nearby. Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritanspurse.org /operation-christmas-child/drop-off -locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item, such as a stuffed animal, soccer ball with a pump, or clothing outfit, and then be filled in with other toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.

Millersville University Theatre will present the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” at 8 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 8 to 10, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The performances, featuring students, faculty, and alumni, will take place in Clair Performance Hall at the Winter Center, 60 Cottage Ave., Millersville. “Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock opera that is said to have reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the musical is loosely based on the final week in the life of Jesus Christ, from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, and features a mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes.
