United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. Strausner and Palmeri will also collect monetary donations and nonperishable food donations for local food banks. The displays will be 6 by 20 feet in size and include extensions that are 8 by 10 feet. Each set contains
multiple intricate models of structures and train cars, made to scale as replicas of their real-life counter parts. Palmeri, now age 14, took an interest in his grandfather’s model collection around six years ago, and Strausner himself began collecting models when he was around 6 years old. “My aunt and uncle used to get me a new Plasticville model building for every holiday and birthday,” Strausner said. “They got me quite a few authentic ones from the ’50s, which I still have.” Strausner remained an avid collector through his teen years but stopped collecting once he went off to college and got married. He and his wife had a son, William, who took an interest in the models at an early age, prompting Strausner to dive back into old hobby around 25 years ago. His current collection numbers over 300 units.
Al Strausner has been collecting model sets since he was a child.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will present its fall play, “Radium Girls,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 10 to 12, in the school’s Performing Arts Center. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage - until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who
cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with his employees’ illnesses. As the case goes on, however, Fryer finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but also with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students and seniors. To purchase tickets, call 717808-1565, email info@l-s pioneers.org or visit www .l-spioneers.org/news/ and look for “LSHS Fall Play Radium Girls.” Tickets will also be available at the door.
Christmas Sale, Breakfast Planned The Women’s Association of Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will hold its annual Christmas sale in the church’s Westminster Hall on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to noon. Held in conjunction with the sale will be a breakfast held by Boy Scout Troop 4 in the church’s Donegal Hall. The breakfast will feature eggs, hash-brown potatoes, sausage, toast, orange juice, and other beverages. There is a set fee. Westminster Hall and Donegal Hall are connected. Westminster Hall is located on the ground floor; it is accessible via a ramp at the church’s rear entrance. The breakfast area can also be reached via the church’s front steps. Parking is available at the rear of the church.

In October of 2019, Osborne’s father, who had dementia and was in an assisted living program, wandered from his facility and was found deceased. Once at the location where the missing person was last seen, the officer is able to use the receiver to track and locate exactly where he or she is within a matter of minutes. “The average time to find someone with Alzheimer’s that is missing is nine hours, and unfortunately, by then it may be too late,” said Kelly Osborne of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster. “Project Lifesaver has reduced the average search time to 30 minutes and has a 100% success rate in finding those wearing the bracelet.” Osborne became involved with the program in 2019, and Troop J officially joined the program earlier this year. Whitaker Grabs Gold, Pioneers Finish Second
BY MONA STEINHAUER
While the football team was warming up for Wyomissing, the boys’ cross country team was battling the Spartans’ harriers in the District Three Championships at Big Spring High School. L-S, the defending 2A champs, came home with four medal winners, including Colin Whitaker’s gold medal performance, but it wasn’t quite enough. L-S finished with 66 team points, just 12 points behind Wyomissing. “The boys knew Wyomissing would be competitive,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. “The boys ran well and pushed themselves, but Wyomissing’s spread was less. “Colin moved from second to first this year,” she continued. “He had a lead at the beginning and kept it the entire race. He broke the AA record for the district course and looked relaxed the whole race.” Whitaker’s 15:40.5 winning time becomes the new district course record for AA, passing last year’s champ Weber Long of Greencastle-Antrium and his 15:45.9. Seniors Ben Devine and Parker Stoner also improved on last year’s times and places. Devine moved from 9th (16:51) to 4th with a 16:21.3 while Stoner dropped from 17:08 (15th) to 16:51.3 and placed 12th overall. Luke Smith, a junior, showed the biggest improvement, dropping over a minute off his time
and moving from 40th to 18th place and rounding out the L-S medal winners. The Pioneers fifth and final counter was freshman Michael Colosi (51st in 18:36). Andrew Cramer (58th, 18:47.5) and Owen Witmer (60th, 18:48.2) rounded out the lineup. “Michael, Owen and Andrew were close throughout the race,” said Cunningham. “Michael had a strong last mile. He has been improving throughout the season and is motivated to continue to improve.” The girls’ team also competed as a team at the District Championships and settled for 9th place in a field of 18 teams. Sophomore Keira Smecker was the only medal winner, grabbing 17th place in 20:50.7. Last year she was 32nd in 22:08. Morgan Wright, a junior, followed in 32nd place with a 21:42.9 and Merin Kauffman was 56th (22:59). She was the seventh freshman to cross the finish line. Rounding out the top five was Abby Welchans (92, 24:01.9) and Jocelyn Wolff (94th, 24:04.3) while Mikayla Coe (122, 25:28) and Jenna Guyer (137, 28:27) completed the lineup. “Abby and Morgan both improved their times,” said Cunningham. “Both ran hard. So did Merin, Makayla, Jocelyn and Jenna. It wasn’t their best race but overall, but they

all have improved from last year to this year.” The boys’ team, along with Smecker, will compete in the PIAA Championships in Hershey. FOOTBALL In a battle for the Section Four title, the 8-1 Pioneers traveled to Wyomissing for a Saturday afternoon contest, Oct. 29, against the 9-0 Spartans who were going for their 35th regular season win. A lot on the line for both squads who came in with 6-0 regular season records. Wyomissing, outscoring teams 44-8, emerged with a 21-0 shutout, Lampeter’s first regular season shutout loss in 14 years. “ Wyomissing is a very good football team,” said head coach Victor Ridenour. “I thought we were better, but we have some work to do, especially on offense.” That offense was held to 77 total yards and just five first downs. After forcing the Pioneers to punt on their opening possession, Wyomissing put together an 82-yard drive that resulted in a 4-yard touchdown run by Matthew Photo by Connor Hollinger L-S running back Jonathan Mellinger cuts behind a block by Jeremy Reed Kramer, the team’s in the Pioneers’ 21-0, Section Four loss at Wyomissing on October 29. leading scorer.
L-S punted again and again the Spartans drove the length of the field and pushed in another 4-yard touchdown, this one by Ryker Jones with 5:01 left in the half. The Pioneers, who dropped their season opener to Solanco but powered their way through the next eight games racking up three shutouts along the way, looked to challenge late in the quarter but Trent Wagner’s pass was intercepted at the Spartans’ 32. The third quarter was a
defensive battle. Each team forced two punts. But Wyomissing, who’s closest game this season was a 41-24 win over Berks Catholic, found its way to the endzone again. Kramer scored his 19th TD of the season on a 16-yard run with 34 seconds left. Kramer finished with 85 yards on 18 carries. “I thought the defense as a whole played really well,” said Ridenour. “ Wyomissing is very physical, and our defense matched that for most of the
game. They had to work for every stripe. I am proud of our defensive effort. “Offensively, we made mental mistakes, missed some opportunities and struggled to put more than two good plays together,” Ridenour continued. “We allowed too many negative plays and when you do that against an opponent like Wyomissing, you’re going to have a long day.” The Spartans finished with 259 rushing yards and 19 first downs.

On Nov. 1, Water Street Mission issued a challenge to the Lancaster community to break its food collection record by Dec. 22. Last year, the organization collected 94,000 pounds of food, breaking all of its previous records. This year, Water Street Mission hopes to amass 100,000 pounds of donated food before Christmas. This call to action is necessitated by a recent increase in the number of those in need of Water Street Mission’s services, such as its emergency shelter and outreach center. “Throughout the summer and into the fall, the emergency shelter has filled up, which doesn’t normally happen,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We’re full through every week and we’re reaching capacity. The food drive is a huge part of fulfilling the need that we’re seeing.” The emergency shelter provides those experiencing homelessness with a hot meal and a safe place to sleep, as well as opportunities to move
On average, Water Street Mission serves 2,000 families each month through its outreach center.
into residential programs and receive further assistance. The shelter does not normally receive an increase in engagement until the winter months but has noticed an alarming spike in those requiring assistance far sooner than usual, which Water Street Mission attributes to the rising costs of food, rent and fuel. Water Street Mission serves 2,000 families on average each month through its outreach center. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week, the outreach center provides families with an opportunity to
pick up dairy products, fruits, vegetables, eggs, desserts and occasionally hygiene items, distributing over 30,000 pounds of food on a monthly basis. On Fridays, whatever goods are left over for the week are able to be picked up without presenting an ID. “The goal for the outreach center is to create a barrier between people and homelessness,” said Clement. “If someone has to choose between paying their bills and buying groceries for the month, we take the groceries out of the equation so they can focus on
keeping their housing.” Water Street Mission is always in need of volunteers and due to the current demand is also looking to bring aboard more employees in roles such as life coaches and case managers. “If we want to grow our capacity and meet community needs, we require quite a few people,” said Clement. “The big call to action is for people to donate. That would be massive.” To view a list of items needed for the drive or to make a financial donation, visit https://wsm.org.

In anticipation of the holiday season, outdoor holiday lighting expert Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster offered do-it-yourself decor warriors some basic safety guidelines from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). Use extension cords and electrical decorations that are designed for outdoor use and confirm that they have been approved by a recognized testing lab. Inspect lights, decor and extension cords for damage before using them, and plug them into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Do not overload a single electrical outlet with too many devices. People should keep themselves, their decor and their equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines during and after installation and removal. Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed for the night. Brenneman reminded property owners that there is another, safer way to approach outdoor holiday decorating chores: turn them over to a

The 5K will not be timed or competitive, and GOTR invites members of the public who wish to run in the race or cheer on the runners from the sidelines to participate. “People love to come if it’s their first time doing a race and they want to be a part of an uplifting experience,” said Jes Wilson, director of the 5K. There are a variety of ways to participate; beyond running in the race or cheering on the runners, people can register to become volunteers for the event. GOTR is in need of volunteers to act as course marshals during the race, directing the runners along the route and encouraging them throughout the day. “We take the safety of participants very seriously and go to great lengths to ensure they are safe,” said Wilson. “(Being a course marshal) is a great way to volunteer and be a part of an awesome day.” To become a volunteer, visit www.gotr lancaster.org/volunteer. Eagle Scout Organizes Supply Drive

Eagle Scout Jason Hertzog will organize a supply drive for those serving in the military overseas on Friday, Nov. 11, from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 12, from noon to 4 p.m., at 200 Willow Valley Square, Willow Street. The Troop 146 trailer will be stationed in the Willow Valley Square parking lot to accept donations. The list of suggested items includes instant coffee, Keurig coffee cups, tea packets, hot chocolate, Slim Jims, crackers, travel-size hand sanitizer bottles, protein bars, trail mix , beef jerky, hand and foot warmers, combs, toothbrushes, lip balm, and vitamins. Monetary donations will also be accepted, and funds raised will be used to ship the donated items overseas. Donations can be made payable to Troop 146 and sent to Bethel Church, 3716 Main St., Conestoga. Hertzog credits his inspiration to collect donations for those serving overseas to the number of his family members who have served in the military; his grandfather served in the Army, two of his cousins and his brother served in the National Guard, and his mother’s stepfather was in the Air Force. Hertzog himself hopes to join the National Guard. “I always knew I wanted to go into the service. A couple years

ago, my brother joined the National Guard, which inspired me to join,” said Hertzog. Hertzog has been an active member of the Scouts for 11 years, beginning his journey as a Cub Scout. “It’s been hard, and sometimes I wanted to leave,” Hertzog said. “It’s a lot of work, and as I’ve grown up, I’ve realized how much it’s helped me.” Before joining the Scouts, Hertzog was terrified of public speaking. Now, as an Eagle Scout and after more than a decade of involvement with the program, he said he loves talking in front of people. “It took me out of my comfort zone,” Hertzog said. “Being a part of the Scouts sets you up for life. You learn practical skills like survival tactics as well as how to be a good leader.” Hertzog is a senior at Kennard-Dale High School and noted that he looks forward to applying everything he’s learned with the Scouts to his life moving forward. Troop 146 is currently looking for new members. For more information, search for “Boy Scout Troop 146” on Facebook.
