Uncovering 150 years of local history

In 1874, four Willow Street residents shared a goal to establish a new place of worship in the community. On Oct. 24 of that year, married couples

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Mylin and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Dagen convened on the third floor of what was then Frick Hall, planting the seed of a humble church that would grow into a thriving congregation 150 years later.

artifacts to offer church members and the greater community a glimpse of the area’s history. “We feel we have a duty to start sharing these records,” Schubert said.

“One of the big plans we have is to start an oral history project about the Willow Street community in general, not just the church.”

“We feel we have a duty to start sharing these records.”

This year, Willow Street Church, 2723 N. Willow Street Pike, will celebrate its 150th anniversary by organizing a variety of community events and historical projects that will take place over the next two years. Eric Schubert, a Millersville University graduate student and intern at Willow Street Church’s archive, is currently digging through a mountain of old records and

Although the church’s archive primarily includes information about the congregation’s history, it also contains a wealth of records and pieces of the past related to the greater community and its residents. As Schubert has combed through the archive’s contents, he has discovered numerous records and artifacts, including Bibles that date to as early as 1821; the ashes of the original Willow Street Church foundation; and a treasure trove of audio tape reels, camera slides and Super 8 film rolls.

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club recently partnered with nonprofit organization Parish Resource Center to support expecting mothers in the local region. On Sept. 25, volunteers from the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club assembled 92 kits of items for infants at Parish Resource Center’s facility, located at 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The kits will be distributed to expecting mothers

It promotes health and growth and confidence. But Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster is also about stamina; it’s about finishing the race.

GOTR Lancaster is in the process of putting the wraps on another fall season. If participation and impact are any indications, the current season has been an overwhelming success.

“Girls participate in our program for every reason imaginable,” said

Jennifer West, co-founder of GOTR Lancaster. “They stick with it because it’s fun. Our program is a developmental program that focuses on the whole girl. The girls learn about who they are and how to make good choices. They learn how to be good friends and how to choose good friends.”

GOTR Lancaster will conclude its 10-week fall season on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field, 105 Pucillo Drive, Millersville, with a session-ending 5K fun

through Union Community Care, a medical provider that offers prenatal services at a variable cost depending on clients’ budgets.

In the first phase of the project, the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club received a list from Parish Resource Center of the items needed for the baby kits. Each kit includes a diaper bag, diapers, sanitary wipes, a nasal aspirator, a blanket and clothing items such as onesies, sleepers and hats. The Rotary Foundation helped fund the purchase of the baby kit items through the Rotary District 7390 Grant Program, matching the contributions of the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club. The project was proposed by one of the Lancaster

Hempfield Rotary Club’s members who discovered Parish Resource Center’s community outreach initiatives. The club decided to pursue the partnership due to the baby kit program aligning with one of the Rotary Club’s missions to advocate for mothers and children.

“The baby kits are a good starter package to make sure new mothers have what they need after they have their children,” said Tony DeVito, president of the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club. “We like to do service projects that are locally based, and Parish Resource Center does outreach right here in Lancaster.”

In addition to serving mothers and children, the Rotary Club has other missions that focus on areas including promoting peace,

fighting disease, providing clean water, supporting education, growing local economies and protecting the environment. In recent years, the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club has completed projects to install new benches at local parks and has donated books to elementary schools in Hempfield School District.

The organization also hosts community meals throughout the year at a local church, and it completes a biannual project to pick up trash along a 4-mile section of Harrisburg Pike.

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club holds regular meetings from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of every month at Loxley’s Restaurant on Centerville Road. During meetings, members discuss potential service projects and host

guest speakers to highlight a variety of topics and other organizations with similar goals. The last meeting featured a local historian who spoke about the artwork inside the dome of the Capitol building in Harrisburg.

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club holds an annual Christmas wreath fundraiser to help support its community service initiatives. This is the first year that the club will sell wreaths at a roadside stand in addition to accepting presales. On Saturdays Dec. 7, 14 and 21, club members will operate a stand near Pinnacle Family Dental Care on Harrisburg Pike in Landisville.

PennDOT posts contest for students

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites high school students from across the state to participate in the eighth annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades nine through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model.

For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a cost-effective, innovative solution that may help PennDOT more effectively increase awareness of seat belt safety and change behavior to improve roadway safety. PennDOT is committed to continuously improving roadway safety, and the agency works to do so using a multifaceted strategy, which involves promoting behavioral programs and implementing infrastructure improvements.

Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, which will determine the statewide winner. For this year’s challenge, four organizations are providing a combined total award of $6,000 to the statewide winning team. These organizations are the Transportation Policy and Education Foundation, an educational arm of the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC); the American Council of Engineering Companies of PA (ACEC/ PA); the Mid-Atlantic Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MASITE); and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA).

run beginning at 2:30 p.m. More than 1,400 runners are expected to attend, including most of the GOTR Lancaster participants and members of their support teams, as well as community members.

The 5K fun run is open to the public, and runners can register at www.gotr lancaster.org up to and including the day of the event. GOTR is also seeking fun run volunteers for the event.

“It’s a day when girls, coaches and family members come out and celebrate the accomplishments of these 10 weeks,” said Jessica Wilson, GOTR Lancaster’s program and 5K fun run manager. “There are a lot of cheer groups along the course, and it just makes it a really special day for the girls. Sometimes they’re running with their coaches, and sometimes they’re running with family

Annville-Cleona school districts in Lebanon County. The meetings consisted of some sort of physical activity, including running; social and emotional curriculum; and varying forms of support.

“We have girls from all walks of life who have experienced all types of things at this point of life,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “For these girls, now is when they’re really trying to understand themselves and how they fit into this world. Participating in Girls on the Run gives them the foundations to build strong relationships and life skills, not just for now, but into the future. We want girls to participate in any way they’re comfortable. There is research that suggests that a combination of physical activity and emotional support is the best way to help the whole person.”

An international program, GOTR was founded in Lancaster in 2009, with two teams and 25 girls. GOTR Lancaster expanded into Lebanon County in 2017, and to date the program has been used 22,000 times by about 12,000 girls.

“We thought this was something Lancaster was ready for,” said West. “We grew quickly. We were just seeing as many girls as possible. Now, we’re going deeper and finding out where we’re not reaching. The participants are really learning how to be part of a larger community.”

Registration for GOTR’s spring 2025 season will open on Friday, Feb. 7, and the 10-week session will commence during the week of March 10.

For additional information about Girls on the Run Lancaster or to volunteer, go to www.gotr lancaster.org.

Willow Street Church

In addition to hosting a series of community events and compiling oral histories, Willow Street Church plans to publish a booklet to tie the contents of the archive into a cohesive historical account. The church invites members of the community to share any stories, memories or old records they may have by calling the office at 717-464-3462 during its regular operating hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

Despite undergoing a number of changes over the last 150 years, Willow Street Church remains an active place of worship with a growing congregation. The cornerstone of the original church was laid in 1876, and

a dedication service took place on July 28, 1877, after six months of construction.

A new educational building, which is still in use today and serves as the church’s fellowship hall, was erected in 1954. The pastor at the time, Gerald Hinkle, appointed a building planning commission four years later to begin developing a plan to build a new sanctuary. A groundbreaking for the new building took place in 1967; the structure was dedicated in 1969, and it serves as Willow Street Church’s sanctuary today. Since the late 19th century, the church’s congregation has grown from a group of fewer than 20 members to more than 100 worshippers. For more information, visit www.wsucc.com.

FHFLC promotes farming as way of life

The development of Lancaster County is rooted in agriculture and family living. It’s a past that the Farm and Home Foundation of Lancaster County (FHFLC) wants to honor but not dwell on.

FHFLC seeks to sustain, preserve and support the evolved agricultural industry in Lancaster County. The nonprofit accomplishes its mission by providing a hub for the farming community, implementing programs, fostering relationships and educating youths.

“Agriculture is very important in Lancaster County,” said FHFLC president Steve Spayd. “Lan -

caster County is still the leading agricultural county in the state. Our farms have gotten larger, and they’ve gotten more technical. Hopefully, at the end of the day, we can say we’ve made progress. I don’t think we’re working harder; we’re working smarter.”

FHFLC, which is directed by a 15-member board, might be best known locally for the Farm and Home Center of Lancaster County, which it operates at 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The spacious building houses seven outside organizations, including the Penn State Agricultural Extension Office of Lancaster County, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency, the Lancaster County Conservation District, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and an agricultural products business.

“Our agricultural community is a very giving community where we come together and learn different things,” said Spayd. “By having a central meeting place, I think it’s been a tremendous benefit to Lancaster County. Our learning is never finished. One of the things we need to keep in mind is, are we passing that knowledge on? There was a need for a hub, and that’s why the foundation was founded.”

FHFLC sponsors a scholarship program for Lancaster County high school students interested in furthering their educations in the fields of agriculture, family living and consumer sciences. Following an application and review process, four-year renewable, $1,000 scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership and financial need.

Since its inception in 1966, the program has awarded 526 scholarships totaling over $740,000. The scholarship program is funded through the Elmer L. Esbenshade Trust and FHFLC.

“I think the scholarship program is a very important aspect of Farm and Home Foundation because we want to encourage young people to further their educations,” said

Spayd. “I think they’re kids who are motivated to learn more and who have a hunger for knowledge. Book knowledge and hands-on knowledge have to go together. The saying ‘it takes a community to raise a family’ is so true. I don’t think you could put a price tag on the whole thing.”

FHFLC, which also supports local 4-H clubs, FFA and community clubs, was established in 1961 by a group of Lancaster County farmers and their wives who were seeking to support agriculture in the community. In 1967, the current Farm and Home Center building was completed.

“I don’t know that the general public knows about us,” said Spayd. “Maybe those in the local agricultural community do. I don’t think people realize the availability of programs for them there and what the foundation has to offer. We’d like to make more people interested in how their food is being produced and where their food is coming from. So many people think food comes from the grocery store, and they don’t know anything beyond that.”
