Acouple years ago, John Kolar approached Historic Rock Ford with an idea for an exhibit he had been dreaming of for years. Kolar, who had coordinated an exhibit at the Landis Valley Museum in 2012, is considered an expert on Pennsylvania long rifles and wanted to curate an exhibit at Historic Rock Ford that would feature not only long rifles crafted in Pennsylvania, but those specifically made in Lancaster County and the role they played in the Revolutionary War.

Samuel Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford, loved the idea and thought it would appeal to a wide range of people who are interested in American history. And what better place to hold such an exhibit than the former home of

During the Revolutionary War, the difference between the resources available to the British and the Americans tipped the scales significantly. This made Lancaster County craftsmen with the skill to produce high quality weapons a vital piece of the war effort.

Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico spent two years planning the exhibit, which officially opened on June 1 and ended on Oct. 30. The exhibition presented a collection of 38 Revolutionary War-era rifles, powder horns and bayonets, many of which were crafted right here in Lancaster County. “This was likely the first and only time that this collection would be displayed in a single location,” Slaymaker said. “Several of the items had not been displayed in public for many years.”

Due to the rarity of the exhibition, as well as its relatively short display period, Slaymaker, Alberico and Kolar agreed that it should be permanently commemorated in a companion book, titled “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War.” As Alberico planned the exhibit, Slaymaker and Kolar set out to find a sponsor for the companion book and eventually were provided with a grant from the Richard C. von Hess Foundation. Kolar began writing the text, and staff members of Historic Rock Ford worked on editing. Alberico enlisted the photography services of Erin Chance of New Leaf Photography, as the curators decided that the photos included in the book needed to be of the highest quality, instead of using old images of the artifacts.

“We take care of the Earth, and it takes care of us,” said Grace Julian, co-founder of The Edible Classroom, an organization that seeks to bring the world of gardening into classrooms across the county. “We focus on the goodness of our engagement with the Earth.”

The Edible Classroom has a three-pronged mission: to cultivate academic achievement, healthy

lifestyles and environmental stewardship, which it accomplishes in a variety of ways with the garden as its backdrop. The organization partners with schools to provide lessons during the school day, resources for teachers and students and afterschool programs, and currently it works with 15 schools in Lancaster County.

In the spring, summer, and fall seasons, The Edible Classroom offers schools 40-minute curriculum-based lessons, where students are able to get their hands on the process of growing and harvesting produce directly. If a school has an existing garden, students can immediately begin planting, tending, and harvesting crops, with the goal of enjoying the fruits of their labor and learning along the way.

“We come into schools as a partner organization to do whatever they determine,” said Julian. “This can include many different things depending on the school.” See Edible Classroom pg 3

“It turned out absolutely incredible,” said Alberico. “(Chance) took a photo of every object in the exhibit. The quality of her work was phenomenal.” Chance photographed the collection over the course of three days, and finishing touches were added to the exhibit until the night before its opening.

People traveled from all over the country to see the collection. “We’ve never had anything here like that before,” said Slaymaker. “National publications and antique magazines were writing about the exhibit.” Slaymaker noted that the success of the exhibit has inspired Rock Ford to plan for similar

exhibits in the future.

To purchase a copy of the companion book, visit www.historic rockford.org or visit the Historic Rock Ford office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Slaymaker asks that those visiting the Rock Ford to pick up a copy call the office beforehand at 717-392-7223.

In “The Polar Express,” on Christmas Eve, a steam locomotive passenger train known as the Polar Express stops at the house of a boy who is growing skeptical about the existence of Santa Claus. The conductor says the train is traveling to the North Pole, and the boy, although reluctant at first, climbs aboard.

Each ticket includes a screening of the film, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Advance tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com. If available, tickets will be sold at the door.

Edible Classroom

Beginning in March, students start preparing the soil and planting the crops, which they maintain through the end of the school year in May. By the beginning of summer, most crops are ready for students to harvest and eat. Over the summer season, the organization offers programs for students to continue their work as gardeners.

In the fall, The Edible Classroom begins a 10-week period alongside the start of the school year, where students can enjoy the many types of produce that thrive until the beginning of November. During the winter months, the organization takes a break from its regular education programs to develop new curricula, which change yearly. The basic principles of each curriculum remain the same, but each one has a different focus and plant material.

Beth Horst and Julian planted the seeds for The Edible Classroom several years ago, after they created

gardens at their kids’ respective elementary schools. “We saw the benefit in the community of having an on-site field trip that the whole school could visit. As parent volunteers, we realized we didn’t want to keep it at only two schools,” said Julian. The Edible Classroom bloomed in 2017, when it was incorporated as a nonprofit organization.

As Horst and Julian developed the nonprofit and partnered with more schools, they realized the benefit of not only serving elementary students during the school day but offering opportunities for students of all ages across different school districts. Volunteer opportunities, learning experiences for agriculture and science students and projects such as constructing garden beds and facilities are some of the ways students can become involved with The Edible Classroom.

School To Present Version Of “Snow White”

Martin Meylin Middle School will present “The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White” as the school’s 2022 musical. Shows will take place at 7 p.m. daily from Thursday, Dec. 1, through Saturday, Dec. 3, at the LampeterStrasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

A cast of more than 60 middle school students will

star in the family-friendly musical, a modern take on the classic story of Snow White. The production includes new characters, comedic twists and a score featuring a variety of musical styles, including hip-hop, rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop.

Tickets may be purchased at the door. For more information, call 717-464-3311, email info@l-spioneers.org or visit www.l-spioneers.org.

The Christmas tree lighting is a tradition that is loved by the community and well attended each year, and very few changes have been made to it over the several years it has been held. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, holiday refreshments and treats were distributed in to-go bags as a safety precaution, but the event has remained otherwise unchanged.

The event was first started by a volunteer committee that introduced the idea, asking the township if it would support such an activity. West Lampeter Township had never hosted a holiday activity of this sort before the Christmas tree lighting. Anne Dunnenberger, a member of the committee, took over management of the event in its first year and has coordinated it every year since.

At 7 p.m., the actual tree lighting will occur, and Santa will arrive on a firetruck provided by the Willow Street Fire Company. Contributions will also be made by the Lampeter Fire Company. “I love seeing the kids’ faces when Santa comes in on the firetruck,” said

After the Christmas tree lighting, attendees will have an opportunity to socialize, share light refreshments and holiday treats and take photos with Santa. Each year, the township recruits a different local act to perform at the Christmas tree lighting. This year’s event will also feature performances from Melanie’s Miracles Baton Twirling School and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School band.

The event traditionally invites the local state representative to speak at the event, as his or her office is located at the West Lampeter municipal building, and the chairman of West Lampeter’s board of supervisors will welcome attendees of the event with a few words. The Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, will host its own Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.

The District Three 4A semifinal game in Manheim Friday, November 18 pitted the Section Two runner-up and No. 2 seed Manheim Central against Lampeter-Strasburg, the No. 3 seed and Section Four runner-up. A close game was expected as both teams gave up fewer than 170 points on the year and had explosive offenses, recording three shutouts apiece. But when the final horn sounded, it was the Barons putting an end to the Pioneers’ season with an impressive 42-6 result. It was the fourth time L-S was denied a trip to the 4A title game.

Central, improving to 11-1, set the tone early, scoring on the opening drive of the game with a Zac Hahn 43-yard strike to Aaron Enterline. They made it 14-0 at the half when Brycen Armold, who rushed for 239yards, scored the first of his three touchdowns.

“We missed a few opportunities early in the game that could have changed the momentum for us,” said head coach Victor Ridenour. “Hats off to them, they played a great game. We struggled coming off our double team to the linebacker which is a key component of our zone blocking. You just can’t allow linebackers to run free and we did that often. That makes any ground game difficult to get moving.”

Armold notched his second touchdown, a three-yard scamper late in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 21-0. The Pioneers finally responded when Trent Wagner found

Dean Herr with a 26-yard scoring strike to close the gap. That, however, was as close as L-S (9-3) would get as the Barons went on to find the endzone three more times in the fourth quarter. Armold went over the 2,000 rushing yard plateau with a 19-yard run while Jaden Weit scored on runs of three and four yards, respectively, over the final minutes.

“We gave them short fields in that final quarter,” said Ridenour. “We were trying to stay in the game. We weren’t

going to give up, but we didn’t convert, and they took advantage of short fields.”

Wagner finished with 192passing yards on 15-of-26 attempts but the Pioneers, sacked four times, were held to a slim 39 yards rushing. Carson Coleman was Lampeter’s top rusher with 68 yards on 14 carries. Dean Herr led with eight receptions (138 yards) while Hunter Hildenbrand, Drexton Frank, and Coleman snagged two receptions each. Defensively,

it was Jack Groff with 10 tackles and Ian Bender with another eight that led the way. Jackson Heeter chipped in with six and nine assists.

Last year the Pioneers advanced to the finals before dropping a 7-0 final against this year’s top seed, Bishop McDevitt. They were the No. 2 seed. Manheim Central was the second seed in the 5A bracket and suffered a 43-26 second round loss to Exeter Township, the eventual 5A champ.

“Each year is truly its own

season,” said Ridenour. “When you are trying to maintain a certain level of expectation, you rely on the kids as much as yourself to keep the momentum going. We had a solid senior class this year,” he continued. “There weren’t many of them, but they were all key contributors. We were a tight team. We had a good locker room, and we were an unselfish group. If no one really cares who is getting all the credit or who is getting all the stats, you can achieve great things. That

has been a positive here at L-S for a very long time.

“I really enjoyed watching our senior leadership develop over the season,” the coach went on. “It was awesome watching a few kids embrace that roll and making it their team. I am proud of the effort and commitment all of these kids and our staff puts into this program.”

Making a loss at the end of the season just a disappointment, not the end of the world, and a start to a new chapter.

Music Students Win Recognition

Students throughout LampeterStrasburg School District have received recognition for their musical achievements.

At Lampeter-Strasburg High School, nine students advanced to the eight-county Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Choral Festival. They will join others from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties for the festival at Solanco High School on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14, 2023. The festival will be guest conducted by Robert Bigley from Lancaster Bible College and will conclude with a public concert at 5 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door. The students selected for District Chorus are Lana Dyer, Tanner Emmerling, Aiden Flory, Pearce Flory, Josh Heisey, Katherine Helm, Kole Lawrence, Ellie Rhinier, and Noah Sanderson.

The district winners were among a dozen Lampeter-Strasburg High School students who successfully auditioned for this year’s LancasterLebanon Music Educators Association (LLMEA) County Chorus; these winners included James Appelgrijn, Jeimy Elvira-Paredes, and Maria Glick. The 2022-23 LLMEA County Chorus Festival will be co-hosted by Lancaster Mennonite School and Conestoga Valley High School on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023. The festival will be guest conducted by Edryn Coleman and will conclude with a public concert at 5:30 p.m. in the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East. There is a cash fee for tickets, which will be sold in the lobby starting at 4:30 p.m.

Nine Martin Meylin Middle School students successfully auditioned for spots in the LLMEA County Orchestra and participated in the correspond-

ing festival on Nov. 19 at Palmyra Area Middle School. The festival ended with a public concert. The participants from Martin Meylin were violinists Jaden Huynh, Dasia Kenyon, Annie Kirumba, Norah Steffy, Kyle Wagner, and Katie Zeager; violist Cameron Straley; and cellists Lyla Girdharry and Anya Sheffer.

The Hans Herr Elementary School Fifth-Grade Band has been invited to perform at the PMEA’s upcoming All-State Conference. The band will travel to the Kalahari Resort in the

Poconos to perform at the conference, which will run from Wednesday to Saturday, April 19 to 22, 2023. Heather Ceresini, who has led Hans Herr’s band program since 2014, submitted a recording of the band’s performance for consideration from PMEA and then learned that the band has been chosen for this opportunity. All fifth-grade band students have been invited to attend the conference. A send-off concert for family and friends is planned for earlier in the year.

Find Unique Gifts At St. Phillip’s Craft Fair

St. Phillip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, will host dozens of vendors for its yearly holiday craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will offer food available to be purchased in addition to different handmade crafts. Parking will be offered in the church’s upper and lower parking lots, the latter of which is handicapped-accessible.

Fifty-eight unique vendors will sell their crafts at the fair, including pottery, woodworking items, jewelry, candy, gift baskets, stained-glass décor, Christmas ornaments and holiday cards. The vendors will be spread across both the church’s upper and lower levels.

Dona Antonelli, one of the vendors, has been participating in the event for over six years. Antonelli fashions jewelry out of recycled materials and items that would otherwise end up in a landfill, such as aluminum cans, credit cards and Styrofoam. “I wanted to do some-

thing different,” Antonelli said. “My daughter is a strong proponent for recycling and environmental awareness; we came up with the idea together.” Antonelli has a degree in studio art from West Chester University and has worked as a graphic designer since graduating. For more information Antonelli’s work, visit www.desertdreamsdesignstudio.com.

The Lancaster Public Library will also sell books at the fair, and the church’s Knights of Columbus will sell breakfast and lunch from the

parish kitchen. “It’s a nice way to spread Christmas cheer,” said Jackie Roberts of the women’s club. “(The fair) gets you in the holiday spirit, and it’s a great time to buy unique Christmas gifts.”

The craft fair is organized by the St. Phillip’s Women’s Auxiliary group, which has been coordinating the annual event for 27 years. “We started (the craft fair) to fundraise for our group and allow us to make donations to the church and different local charities,” said Anne Marie

Dunn, a member of the women’s group. The group itself will operate two stands; one will sell handcrafted items made by group members, and the other will sell baked goods such as cookies and brownies.

Over the years, the women’s group at St. Phillip’s has assisted with several projects within the church, such as purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen and funding remodeling in the building. The group also supports the community in different ways by buying flowers and gifts for residents of local nursing homes around the holidays and making meals for the homeless twice a year at St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster city. After cooking the meals, members will bring them to St. Mary’s and distribute them alongside multiple other churches in the county.

“Our goal is to provide fellowship to women of the parish and financially support the church through its projects and community outreach,” said Roberts.

Guests will experience the retelling of the birth of Jesus through song and Scripture. Several selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including a congregational sing-along of the “Hallelujah” chorus, will be interspersed throughout a varied program of familiar favorites, multicultural songs, and bluegrass-infused selections from Tim Sharp’s Angel Band. Singers will share music in many lan-

guages, which they learned and practiced with native Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and S’gaw Karen speakers. Violin, banjo, guitar, bass, and percussion will round out the program.

MCCL’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The 110-voice choir includes the Carol Choir for children in second through fifth grades, Concert Choir

for sixth- through eighth-graders, and Chamber Choir for students in ninth through 12th grades led by artistic director Rosemary Siegrist Blessing with directors Sarah Wingard and Galen Kauffman. MCCL is a community children’s choir program of Lancaster Mennonite School serving children and youths from Lancaster, Chester, York, and Berks counties.

Beloved Tunes In New Clothes

Balancing the familiar with the contemporary is a tightrope that Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, walks each year as Christmas approaches. “Old harmonization worked in a different time,

but in this age when things are fast moving, people want to hear recognizable tunes in new suits of clothes,” said Laudermilch, who dresses “stable and recognizable” holiday musical fare in brighter and livelier colors.

This year, the 11th annual New Holland Band Holiday Pops concert

will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, in the Palm Court of the Double-Tree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster.

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The event is known for featuring a meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the season. “We want to give family and friends a chance to converse around the table at this cordial time of year,” noted Laudermilch.

As it has a few times before, the event will kick off with trumpets from the balcony announcing the start of John Wasson’s “Festival Fanfare for Christmas.” “If I don’t have (the trumpets), people ask where (they are),” explained Laudermilch, who said this will be the fourth time the trumpets lead the event. “It’s really a great opening,” he added.

The opening will be followed by lighter music, including pieces such as “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and possibly the well-known Carpenters classic “Merry Christmas, Darling.” “It’s such a pretty tune, and everyone knows it,” said Laudermilch.

For the first time, the Lancaster Bible College Chorale, under the direction of Robert Bigley, will join the band for a few numbers. The

chorale will sing two songs accompanied by the band and a third song will be performed a capella.

Additional Christmas favorites will include music from the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” “The Bells of Christmas,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” and “A Winter’s Night,” based on the quintessential carol “Silent Night,” in a new setting.

The event includes dinner for individuals and tables of eight and 10. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may do so at www.newholland band.org or by calling 717-355-5096.

Holiday Meal Delivery Set

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.
