SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LX • NO 31

A county-wide call to help neighbors in need BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Wesley UMC’s choir will sing a series of traditional Christmas songs. Once the music has concluded, the story of the Nativity will be portrayed by a cast of congregation members. The actors will play the parts of angels, shepherds, village children, King Herod and the Holy Family, and the performance will begin with a depiction of the Annunciation. Although none of the actors have any dialogue, each scene from the story will be told by

As winter rolls around each year, food banks and community outreach programs across the country are often met with a stark increase in the demand for their services. While the holiday season is a time of celebration for many, the cold weather and additional ex penses that accompany this time of year can prove challenging for others. To combat this seasonal challenge, Water Street Mission launched its annual food drive on Nov. 1, and the organization is once again calling on Lancaster County residents to band together in support of their neighbors. “We already started to see an increase in demand for our programs in September, and we’re expecting another influx as the months get colder,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We didn’t quite meet our goal last year, but we’re thankful that we got close. It really helped us make it through the winter.” The goal of this year’s drive is 110,000 pounds of food. Until Friday, Dec. 22, donations of nonperishable food items may be dropped off directly at Water Street Mission’s facility, which is located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Donors can bring items to the building’s loading dock during its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Donations may also be taken to any of the 30 drop-off locations that have been established through partnerships with businesses and organizations across the county. Christmas pageant will return to Strasburg BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

ithin each community is an abundance of unique traditions that its residents carry on to celebrate the holiday season. Certain towns have a history of annual celebrations that span decades, such as Strasburg’s annual Christmas pageant. After a hiatus that lasted several years, the pageant returned in 2022 to Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC),

W

40 W. Main St., Strasburg. “People were so excited. Our church was filled for all three performances,” said Pat Lewis of Wesley UMC. “All of the feedback I heard was that everyone was absolutely thrilled.” The pageant will return this year through a partnership between various members of the community, inside and outside of Wesley UMC’s congregation. The church will still host the event, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday,

Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4:30 p.m. Seating will be

and it was held every year until 2017. The church discontinued the event in 2018 due to a lack of young congregation members to play many vital roles in the pageant. The final factor in Wesley UMC’s decision to pause the annual reenactment was the lack of an infant to play the role of baby Jesus. The actors who had played the baby in the manger in previous productions had also aged out of the part. Wesley UMC’s initial plan to bring the pageant back in 2020 was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Strasburg community has banded together to reinstate one of its most beloved Christmas traditions.

The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will present a concert of Christmas music at the West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street, on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The band will present music in a variety of styles, with selections including “Here We Come A-Caroling,” “O Holy Night,” “Christmas Sketches,” “Coventry Carol,” “Home for the Holidays,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”

“Merry Christmas, Darling,” “Christmas Sing-Along,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “Sleigh Ride.” The band is directed by Howard Boots. A freewill offering will be received. Holiday refreshments will be available. For more information, call 717413-7126. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

and the choir will return to offer musical accompaniment for certain scenes. “For many area residents, the production is a tradition that heralds the Christmas season,” said Lewis, the director of the Christmas pageant. “It brings a reverence to this time of year amidst the drumbeat of retail advertising.” The pageant will feature multiple immersive elements, such as the crying of baby Jesus as He is portrayed by a real infant. The church will be transformed to resemble the stable and inn in Bethlehem, and the actors will pass through the aisles as audience members

In September, Circle Legacy Center reintroduced its monthly programs for the first time in multiple years. The organization was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville with the primary goal of educating the local community on the culture and history of Native Americans, in addition to drawing attention to the modern concerns they face. Although Circle Legacy Center has no official headquarters, it often partners with organizations such as Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. The nonprofit’s regular programs are open to the public, and they are held on the second Friday of each month at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Although each of the program’s meetings have always highlighted a specific issue that relates to Native American communities, Valentine decided to shift the upcoming session to focus on helping those who are experiencing homelessness in the city. On Friday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Circle Legacy Center will host Dave Costarella at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster. Costarella will share information about two programs he has created to support those struggling with

housing in the area. Costarella created the first program, My People on the Streets, eight years ago to provide homeless Lancastrians with supplies such as food and warm clothing. Costarella created the program after he heard someone

In addition to helping Water Street Mission to withstand the wintertime wave, the food drive allows the organization to continue its many other outreach programs without diverting all of its resources. Valentine and Costarella met several years ago through their shared passion for community service. The program on Dec. 8 will be Circle Legacy Center’s first official collaboration with Costarella, but he has worked with Valentine on various projects in the past to advocate for Lancaster County’s homeless population. Valentine recently contacted the city council to raise awareness for issues such as a lack of public restrooms and emergency shelters. City officials have since placed a portable bathroom in the parking lot of an emergency shelter on North Prince Street, which is maintained by participants in the Hands Up Partners program. “We’re all very concerned about our homeless

Through the collaboration, the nonprofit organization raises money that Costarella uses to provide people without housing with a weekly stipend; in exchange, the recipients join him in cleaning projects at local parks and community areas. “The program has helped a lot of participants find jobs by acting as a stepping stone,” said Costarella.

Piercing Word will present “The Advent of Christmas” at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, on Sunday, Dec. 10. Inspired by the traditional themes of Advent, “The Advent of Christmas” celebrates the hope, faith, joy, peace, and love found in Christ. This production includes the traditional Christmas narrative from Luke 1 and 2 and other passages that highlight the birth of Christ and why His arrival matters. There will be a brief refreshment break after the performance, and then Piercing Word will lead a Bible memorization workshop. Guests may choose to attend either the performance, the workshop, or both, and attendees of the workshop may actively participate or just watch and listen. Memorization workshops aim to help people of all ages replace boring memorization habits with fun, life-giving spiritual discipline. Workshop participants will learn how to use their strongest learning styles to their advantage and discover how to memorize Scripture faster, retain it longer, and have fun while they do it. Although there is no admission fee for either event, a freewill offering will be accepted. Piercing Word’s mission is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The organization challenges everyone, everywhere they go, to memorize the Word of God for themselves and then equip them to do so through memorization workshops and discipleship programs. For those who wish to delve deeper into Bible memorization, Piercing Word offers a “ Warriors of the Word” course and book. Piercing Word Inc. is a nonprofit Christian ministry based in Lancaster. It has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007 in dramatic and musical presentations, word for word from the ESV See Piercing Wood pg 8

Inside, a kids’ craft station will be set up for children to make pinecone ornaments rolled in birdseed, and for the second year, a Kinder Shoppe will offer low-cost items for children to purchase as holiday gifts. “That was very well

Fasnacht invites everyone out to enjoy the event, adding, “This is a great way to experience a little bit of German culture right in your backyard.” For more information about the Christkindlmarkt, visit www.lancasterliederkranz.com.
