Christmas traditions today are mostly contained to a one-day celebration on Dec. 25, when families around the world exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ. However, over 200 years ago, Colonial Americans observed the holiday in a much different fashion.
Yuletide Tours will return to Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Dec. 27; Wednesday, Dec. 28; and Thursday, Dec. 29, to provide an immersive view into how Lancaster County residents celebrated Christmas in the late 18th century. The Hand Mansion at Rock Ford will be open for self-guided tours on Dec. 27 and 28from 4 to 6 p.m.
and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Dec. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
Guests will have an opportunity to walk through the historic former home of Edward Hand, which will be decorated as it would have been when Hand lived there. Volunteers dressed in period accurate attire will be stationed throughout the house to answer questions, and hearth cookers will prepare historically accurate food in the kitchen and explain to guests what meals were customary in the old days. In the halls of the mansion, dancers will perform traditional routines from the 18th century such as Jack’s Health, Midnight Ramble and Duke of Kent’s Waltz.
For the first time, live music will be provided by harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin,
as well as Faith’s sister, Mercy, on the violin. The musicians will perform classical pieces and traditional Yuletide carols, many of which would have been performed in the Hand Mansion while Hand lived there. Jasper Yates, the uncle of Hand’s wife, Catherine, and a close friend of Hand’s, lived in Lancaster during this time period and owned a harpsichord himself.
The Yuletide Tours will also include a scavenger hunt activity for children, and guests will have an opportunity to hear a recording of Hand, portrayed by an actor from the Theater of the Seventh Sister. In the recording, Hand will reminisce on the Christmas of 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River with George Washington and his company.

For Erin Mary Lynch of Landisville, the holiday season is more about giving than receiving. Lynch not only purchases Christmas presents for her friends and family; but she also aims to give back to her community through music and providing a message of hope.
“Faith and performance have gotten me through so many things,” said Lynch. “The ability to pull people out of whatever day they’re having and into a joyful and happy mood is so special.”
Lynch was first introduced to the world of theater around the age of 7; when she performed in a Christmas show at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Since then, she has starred in numerous productions across the county, returning to the Dutch Apple and first performing at Sight & Sound Theatres in its production of “Jonah” in 2012. “I was super lucky to grow up in Lancaster, where there are so many opportunities to perform,” said Lynch, who is currently a member of the cast of “David” at Sight & Sound.

the
This was the first year that Lynch was the writer, director and choreographer of the annual “Wish” musical at Dutch Apple on Dec. 4 and 5.
The musical, hosted by nonprofit organization Mychal’s Message, raises funds in order to provide Christmas gifts and meals to families in Lancaster County. This year’s show followed the story of a young girl whose family is participating in Wish to give to those in need. The show highlighted the importance of giving versus receiving through the eyes of its protagonist. “I was able to see all of the kids and families that were involved with the program because of the mission and not just the show,” said Lynch. “It shifted my perspective.”
The auditions for “Wish” drew young performers from all over the county, and those selected began rehearsing in the beginning of October. After the end of the show, the money raised was used to pay for the gifts and meals that were acquired by Lynch’s older sister, Shannon Hickey who is a member of Mychal’s Message. The week before Christmas, the show’s cast members and their families will deliver the gifts and meals to recipients at McCaskey High School.
Lynch wrote the script and worked on “Wish” in between
rehearsals and performances for “David,” often spending her evening dinner breaks writing the script, reviewing auditions and choreographing routines. This is the second year Lynch has written the script, and she plans to return as a writer for next year’s show.

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, operates a food pantry that is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. The pantry functions similarly to a grocery store; visitors can browse its shelves and select the specific items they need, such as canned foods, meat, fruits, vegetables, pasta and cereal.
LUMC’s pantry also offers personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, deodorant and toilet paper, and it includes a section with diapers, formula and baby food for families with infants. During the holidays, the church stocks its pantry with seasonal items like stuffing and ingredients for pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. Visitors to the food pantry are able to take advantage of its offerings once per month, with no requirement for eligibility; LUMC only asks that the
community reserve the pantry for those in need. If unable to visit the pantry during regular hours, people can set up an appointment by calling 717-464-4161.
“We find that more people come in during the winter months and over the holidays, and the sizes of families coming in are getting larger,” said Ivan Haines, a coordinator for the food pantry at LUMC. “The pantry gives people that come a lift; we want it to be a bright spot in the lives of people who are struggling.” LUMC also offers a free community meal on the first Wednesday of each month from 5 to 6:15 p.m.
Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, also runs a food pantry, with hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon At the Mission Church pantry, families are able to receive one box of nonperishable food per household each month, and visitors must verify their name and address by presenting a form of identification.
Strasburg First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, operates a food bank on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. Similarly to LUMC’s pantry, visitors may select their own items, including dairy products, bread, personal hygiene items, paper items and occasionally meat.

Art Exhibit To Run Through December
B. Emerson, a West Reading artist with a focus on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes, will continue the exhibition of her newest collection, “Dark Games & Other Little Things,” at Mulberry Art Studios into
December. Guests can contact the gallery curator at stephanie.mulberryart@gmail .com to arrange a visit.
Since a young age, making art has always been a way of life for Emerson. After college, working in other industries and starting a family,
she rediscovered her love for drawing after the death of her spouse. Graphite pencil and paper is Emerson’s preferred medium. In earlier works, the inspiration of wood grain was partially used in paintings but not in its entirety as it is today. It
has now become a signature style in identifying Emerson’s work.
Each piece has depth of movement through perspective, rich tonality and contrast with the use of black and white and the incorporation of wood grain. Emerson’s
inspiration comes from a deeply rooted fascination with nature, people and life events.
This year’s exhibit will showcase a variety of Emerson’s work through the last two years, including 10 new pieces. A mix of all series and
themes is featured, and works are on a small to large scale.
Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information, visit www.mulberry artstudios.com or search for ‘Mulberry Art Studios” on Facebook.
2023 Men’s Retreat
A note from Brent regarding “The Roar Within”...
In these events I take the guys through their identity in Christ, where do the lies come from that we buy into, and how we untangle whose lies. I call it, “declawing the lies of the enemy.” I also take the guys through the Big 5 Man-Killers that destroy every man (lack of purpose, lack of respect, anger, lust, and shame), and I do this using the Big 5 African animals tying each one of those struggles to each one of the animals. It’s a powerful way to hold their attention and give them the tools they need to defeat the enemy.

L-S Swimmers Top Comets in Season Opener
BY MONA STEINHAUER
The swim teams made the short trip to Millersville Tuesday, December 6 to take on Penn Manor in the season opener. In an afternoon of closely contested races, they came home with a pair of wins. The girls’ won all but four events to win 96-73 while the boys were just as strong, winning 80-61.
Zara Paisley, who qualified for states in the 50 free last year, won both the 50 and the 100 and anchored the 200 and 400 free relays with Kylie Gerhardt, Ashley Prouse and Kara Scranton opening the action.
Gerhardt went on the win the
100 backstroke, Scranton was tops in the 100 butterfly and Krista Lambert held off Bella Fulmer to win the 500 free.
The boys won six of 11 events, including two relays, to pull away. Ryan Smecker and Kyle Spaulding each won two events and swam on two relays to lead the scoring. Smecker anchored the 200 free and 400 free relays with Christian Rota, Matt Rota, and Spaulding joining in. He also posted top times in the 200 free and 100 back while Spaulding dominated the 500 free and took the 200 IM as well.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The boys’ basketball team delivered the most successful
season in school history last year, going 27-1 with section, league, and district crowns. But that was last year. Time to reload.
The team opened the season Friday, December 2 with a 45-44 thriller over Northeastern York. After fighting off a 13-0 deficit to start the game and despite being down 26-17 at the break, L-S kept at it. Down eight points heading into the fourth quarter, L-S turned the tide, outscoring the hosts 11-2 over the final eight minutes to pull out the win.
“We had a little bit of a nervous start,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “But they kept at it.”
Trent Wagner came up with a late defensive stop and Ben Wert
made one-of-two free throws with 17 seconds left to give L-S its first lead of the night.
“They did get off a final shot, but it was contested,” Berryman noted. “I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the shot they were looking for.”
Wert, a returning starter, poured in a career-high 32 points, including all five of Lampeter’s three-pointers, four coming in the third quarter, to lead all scorers. Brady Grau (5), Chase Smucker (4), Yasin Abdi (3), and Luke Hines (1) also contributed.
“Ben really carried us,” said Berryman. “Brady, a freshman, was 2-for-3 from the floor and 1for-1 from the foul line in his first varsity game and did a nice job. Chase struggled a little on offense but did a great job rebounding and playing defense.”
On Saturday, that fourth quarter rally never came and the Pioneers, who were outscored in three of four quarters, suffered a 54-40 loss to Eastern York.
“They are projected as one of the top two teams in York County,” Berryman noted. “They were bigger and wore us down on the boards. They were knocking down second chance points and then kicked it out for a handful of threes.
“We didn’t execute offensively, and it showed,” he added. “Ben struggled with foul trouble, but Luke played well, Dean Herr hit a pair of threes and Yasin Abdi had a nice game too with four points and four assists. He’s a junior and has really worked hard on his game.”
Wert dropped in 12 points and
Hines finished with 10 as Lampeter’s double digit scorers.
“We don’t have four guys sitting on the perimeter that can shoot the three this year, so we need to be patient on offense,” said Berryman. “And we need to keep working on the little things.”
Down 21-17 in the first half, Hempfield charged out of halftime with a 17-7 quarter to grab a 34-28 lead over the Pioneers on Wednesday. Not to be out done, L-S returned the favor with a 17-4 fourth quarter and finished on top 45-38. Herr (11 points) hit back-to-back three’s and Wert (12 points) dropped in seven points to fuel a 17-2 Pioneer run. Smucker also netted 12.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Lady Pioneers advanced to the championship round of the Comet Classic Tip-off tournament with a 46-22 win over the hosts, Friday, December 2, but came up short in bringing home the trophy, falling 62-20 against Central York one day later.
Consistent scoring led to a convincing victory over the Comets. Despite falling behind 11-10 in the first quarter, L-S scored ten points in the second frame, six by Katie Ranck, and finished with 13 points in each of the next two quarters in addition to holding the Comets scoreless in the fourth.
Ranck, the only senior on the team, hit eight-of-13 free throws and finished with a game-high 16 points. Kelsey McTagart chipped in with 11 points, six in the second half and sophomore Ava
Vaugh was right behind, netting nine points.
“Katie was dominant,” said first year head coach Steve Villbrandt. The former PV JV coach and varsity assistant is looking at this season as a “get to know us” season. “We have a new coaching staff and one returning starter. We don’t know our identity yet,” Villbrandt said. “But we expect to compete.
“We controlled the boards against Penn Manor. Leigha Saurbaugh provided a ton of on ball pressure which created problems for Manor’s offense. Kelsey is a spark plug. She can do a lot of things well and I think she has the potential to load the stat sheets this season.”
Saturday afternoon, however, the Pioneers fell behind early and never regrouped. Central York exploded for 29 first quarter points, held L-S to nine and led 47-15 at the half. CY also netted ten three pointers on the night while holding the Pioneers to one.
“Their experience and skill showed,” said Villbrandt. “They have a lot of seniors that have chemistry. We are still developing our chemistry and identity. We struggled. I was really proud of Anna Horner who is getting her first varsity minutes this season. They administered a ton of pressure, and she showed a lot of heart in continuing to fight all game.”
Ranck led the way with nine points and Saurbaugh finished with seven, including that lone three pointer.

2022 is the first year that Rock Ford will host full Yuletide Tours since 2019, as the event was canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. When the tours began over 30 years ago, they were less centered around a historically accurate portrayal of the property and the property was decorated in a more modern fashion. Around 2005, Rock Ford began to alter the tours to give an accurate glimpse into the Christmas
celebrations
“One of the reasons we do the tours after Christmas is that Dec. 25 marked the beginning of the holiday for the old English, and it would last until Jan. 6,” said Sam Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford. Historically, the English observed Christmas Day strictly as a religious event and would save the festivities for the 12th day of Christmas.

Gospel Express To Headline Valentine Banquet
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Nelson Coblentz, who, along with his wife, Sarah, answered God’s call to form Gospel Express in 1984, has some words of advice for married couples. “A happy marriage is a union of two forgivers,” said Nelson, who is in his 49th year of wedded bliss with Sarah. “The whole theme of forgiveness is one of the biggest things in a marriage relationship.” With a chuckle, he added, “Keep forgiving and give flowers.”
Nelson and Sarah will sing and share their advice at the eighth annual Restart Train-
ing Center Ministry (RTCM) Valentine Banquet to be held at Faith Mennonite High School, 5085 Woodland Drive, Kinzers, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a fellowship meal, catered by Shady Maple, will begin at 6:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions.
Gospel Express has focused on prison services and crusades, evangelism, revival meetings, discipleship materials, and more in the United States and Canada, as well as internationally. Nelson and Sarah and their five children traveled and lived for many years in a 40-foot bus. “How do you keep a marriage alive on and off the road?” asked Nelson. “You are doing marriage living in a glass house, which means you’re visible to everybody and you are under the microscope.” Nelson and Sarah have negotiated the years successfully, bringing their adult children and now grandchildren into the ministry. “We have been able to minister three generationally for the first time stateside and internationally,” said Nelson. “That has been a dream.”
Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, noted that the Coblentz team is a good fit for the banquet because of the couple’s devotion to each
other and experience with prison ministry. “(Gospel Express) helps people in prison, and a lot of people in prison suffer from trauma and addiction,” said Santiago, who added that the organization evangelizes and disciples inmates in the U.S. and Canada. “We are trying to evangelize and disciple broken people,” explained Santiago.
Currently, RTCM is graduating about a dozen students a year and mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. “The old elementary school building would be a good fit for us, and it would allow us to expand and add a second phase to the program,” said Santiago. Goals for the second phase, which
would offer 12 beds, are to provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. “We could house 40 students and up to 10 live-in staff members,” said Santiago, who noted that the goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million with renovations included.
Seating at the banquet will be limited. Table sponsorships are available. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call or text 717304-3291 or email office manager@restartministry.org. Tickets may also be purchased at www.restartministry.org /events.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and
the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.
The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context. The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone
Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixeduse housing/commercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50 awards, including design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards
from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minority-based community enterprises. In the last five years, $300,000 of inkind services have been donated to nonprofits.
The team members participate in volunteer activities and events, assist local nonprofits and serve on boards and committees. In addition, T/Wa members are active in
the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter, including two team members who have served as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Board of Directors.

benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”
The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

City Seeks Bids For ARPA Funds
The City of Lancaster seeks to invest a portion of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds in community facilities serving Lancaster city residents. The investment will fund capital projects that support public programs, improve quality of life and public health, create economic opportunity, and promote equitable outcomes for residents.
The City of Lancaster is seeking creative, sustainable ideas for projects that enhance community facilities. Examples include, but are not limited to building or renovation of community health centers, youth centers, libraries, centers for arts and culture, parks, and public places and building or renovating child care, education, health, and social service facilities.
The City of Lancaster was allotted $39.5 million in ARPA funding in 2021. In September 2021, a public engagement process regarding the use of ARPA funds was launched. Community feedback identified a desire
for improved community services in areas like public health, youth support, parks and recreation, and more. Community facilities are at the forefront of delivering these services to residents every day in Lancaster city.
The City of Lancaster will offer virtual question-andanswer sessions for interested applicants to attend on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m., and Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 4 p.m. Information on how to join will be posted at www.cityoflancasterpa.com and at www.pennbid.net.
Sealed proposals will be accepted via the Pennsylvania Electronic Document and Bid Management website at www.pennbid.net through 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23.
For all awarding and management of grants, the City of Lancaster follows a strict conflict of interest policy that is publicly available on its website. Learn more about the City of Lancaster’s use of American Rescue Plan funds at www.cityoflancaster pa.com/arpa.

KPB Litter Summit Held In Lancaster
Stakeholders in the fight against litter convened on Nov. 1 and 2 for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) 2022 Litter Summit hosted by the city of Lancaster. The summit was held in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The event began with a walking tour of Lancaster’s sustainable community, including two projects funded by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Tiny Cans Project and Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project. The Tiny Cans Project provides free trash cans for neighborhood residents to install on their porch railings to reduce littering. The Lancaster
Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project allows the city to add new compost bin locations throughout the city. Other stops on the tour included the Storm Water Rain Garden and Art Mural at Musser Park, the Urban Forestry project, and the new Bike It Lancaster Bike Share. The tour was followed by an evening reception featuring an “Upcycled Art” exhibit curated by Red Raven Art Company. Keynote speaker Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster, spoke about how clean and beautiful communities support strategic priorities for the city: strong neighborhoods, safe places, sustainable economy, and sound government.
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) recognized the PA DEP and PennDOT for their support and collaboration with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s programming, including Pick Up Pennsylvania and the new Young Ambassadors Program. KAB also recognized Gov. Wolf’s office with a State Innovative Partnership Award for the state’s first Litter Action Plan. The summit also featured the state’s new anti-littering campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, which was developed as part of Gov. Wolf’s Litter Action Plan and outlines strategies for all Pennsylvanians to help in the fight against litter.

Christmas Bird Count Announced
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders can help, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy.
The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders should register with the contact person
before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle and to receive instructions.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, a bird count will be held in Lititz. For details, contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.
On Sunday, Dec. 18, a bird count will take place in southern Lancaster County. For details, contact Derek Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner@hotmail.com.
The Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, in collaboration with the Lancaster County Parks Department in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster.
It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Lancaster County Parks Department by calling 717295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. Adults without children are welcome to participate in this count as well. For more details, contact John Lahr at 717-284-3497 or john lahr324@gmail.com.
On Dec. 31, a bird count for adults will be held in Lancaster. For details, call Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030.
