Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a journey back in time to when Christmas Day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18th-century Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when General Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas Day marked the start of a festive season that included 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about 18th-century traditions, listen to traditional holiday music by the Harrisburgbased musical group Seasons and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will be stationed in various rooms of the mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. The candlelight tours will feature period dancing by a volunteer dance group. A new show, “Marionettes in the Mansion,” will mark the culmination of Yuletide at Rock Ford. A joint production with the Lancaster Marionette Theatre, the show will be staged in the mansion and will celebrate the life and times of Hand and his family. The show will feature the talents of Robert Brock. Previews will be held during Yuletide, and performances will take place on Sunday, Dec. 30, at 4 and 6 p.m. and on Monday, Dec. 31, at 4 p.m. with a final benefit performance on Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. Reservations may be made at http://rock ford.yapsody.com. Proceeds from this events will support educational programs at Rock Ford and at the Lancaster Marionette Theatre. To purchase tickets in advance, readers may visit the aforementioned website. Candlelight tours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, and Thursday, Dec. 27. Daylight tours will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. Admission is payable at the door. Separate fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and older, and for youngsters ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under will be admitted at no charge. Founded in 1961 as Citizen Scholarship Fund and changing its name to Dollars for Scholars of Lancaster County for a time, Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) has always had one mission: that of helping county residents to attend college full time by providing interest-free loans. “We offer a hand up, not a handout, said executive director Christie Livengood. She noted that LDHL has a 96 percent repayment rate. “Students pay (their loans) back because we’re a local nonprofit and they know it matters. By paying it back, in turn, they help someone else. LDHL gives loans once a year, and Lancaster County students attending an accredited program anywhere in the world full time may borrow money up to four years. Loans are not automatically renewed; borrowers must reapply every year. The amount awarded depends on how much money LDHL has received from community donors and student repayments; it has no endowment and receives no government funding. In August 2018,

LDHL loaned $1,025,100 to 604 students. “The more money we receive, the more money we can give out, Livengood remarked. Thanks to community support, the maximum amount a student may borrow each year has increased to $1,700. The maximum student debt is currently $6,500, reported LDHL administrator Amy Heth. Borrowers have a six-month grace period after graduation before they must start repaying their loan at the rate of $100 a month. LDHL officials hope that this holiday season folks will be inspired to participate in the organization’s first-ever Secret Santa event, which aims to pay off a portion of students’ debts anonymously. “The general idea was suggested by board members, Livengood explained. “It’s based off the idea of people paying off layaways (at superstores), school lunch accounts, and electric bills. We thought it was a cool concept and a unique way to donate during the holiday season. Donations to LDHL are taxdeductible. Organizations and

(PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was

caster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepen-

nity and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Special speakers were Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists; Fred Lazarus IV, president emeritus of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and the Hon. Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster city. The event also included a video message from Samuel “Sammy” Hoi, president of Maryland Institute

College of Art. Afterward, the PCA&D family and members of the Lancaster community gathered at PCA&D for a celebration that included food from the many traditions represented in Lancaster, along with music. All elements of the celebration related specifically to Lancaster. Molla said that his alma mater, Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., was like PCA&D in being a small, focused, personal college that emphasizes individual student’s needs, active learning and mentorship. Molla served at MICA for a total of 26 years and led the college in the areas of student affairs, operations and strategic initiatives. As the associate vice president of student affairs, he launched MICA’s first residence life program and established a student affairs division for the college, which included on-site counseling and health care services, as well as diversity and safety initiatives. As vice president of operations, Molla was responsible for the development of the Campus Master Plan, including the design and construction of resident facilities; numerous academic, studio and shop spaces; a center for graduate education; and, most recently, an undergraduate design center. In the vice president of strategic initiatives position, Molla was responsible for strengthening the relationship between MICA and the city of Baltimore, including facilitating new urban initiatives to engage the community in support of the arts and expanding opportunities to city residents. In Lancaster, Molla seeks to explore the possibilities of the college’s contributions to the city of Lancaster and vice versa. Lifecycles offers free weekly bicycle rides for boys ages 12 to 18 at locations in Marietta, Landisville, and New Holland, along with weekend and summer challenge rides. At the close of its fourth season, the organization had tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden by its students and volunteer leaders.

By Chelsea Peifer

Sometimes the wide-open road ahead can look impossible to conquer, but the leaders at Lifecycles are all about equipping students to rise to meet whatever challenges may arise. Founded by Lee DeRemer, the nonprofit mentoring program is committed to building young men of character through bicycling and outdoor adventures. One of the ways Lifecycles accomplishes that is through an annual summer challenge ride, and this year was the first time that the program offered two trips. The first summer journey, dubbed the Extreme Challenge Ride, was designed for Lifecycles participants ready for an advanced level of riding. A group of 10 teenage boys and six adult leaders spent one week navigating 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.” Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too

hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C., all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.life cyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy. As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden - equivalent to more than three times around the planet - and over 22,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 miles from Lancaster to Boston. “If you’re really ready, we’ll give you an experience you won’t forget,” said DeRemer. To inquire about volunteering at any of the locations, readers may email director@lifecycle steam.org or call 717-586-2511. “We always love to have new volunteers of any age and riding ability,” remarked DeRemer.

Making Lighting Displays Safer

Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) notes

Warm

Season’s Greetings From

B.G. Mellinger & Son Fuel Oil 410 Baumgardner Road Willow Street, PA

that each year between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Fortunately, various strategies can help homeowners safely decorate their homes’ interiors and exteriors this holiday season. The NFPA recommends celebrants who prefer natural Christmas trees choose ones with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Dry trees are more likely to catch fire than freshly cut trees. Adding water to the tree stand each day will keep

If left on overnight or when no one is home, lights may contribute to fires that damage homes and may even prove fatal. Holiday lighting displays help make this time of year special. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season

trees fresher longer. When placing the tree, avoid placing it too close to heat sources, making sure it is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, and lights. All lights, including those going on trees inside a home and those being strung outside, should be inspected prior to being strung. Owners should look for any worn or broken cords and replace any defected lights. When stringing lights, individuals should always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. People should avoid working outdoors in inclement weather. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends Christmas gift buyers make safety a priority. To help shoppers select appropriate gifts this holiday season, Prevent Blindness has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. Prevent Blindness offers tips and suggestions with safety in mind. Safety tips include reading all warnings and instructions on the box; asking if a toy is right for a child’s ability and age; considering whether other smaller children may be in the home and may have access to the toy; avoiding purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges; checking the lenses and frames of children’s sunglasses; buying toys that will withstand impact and not break into dangerous shards; avoiding toys that shoot or include parts that fly off; not giving toys with small parts to young children; not purchasing toys with long strings or cords, especially for infants and very young children; always disposing of uninflated or broken balloons immediately; and not purchasing toys with small magnets. If purchasing sports items or equipment for sports such as basketball, baseball or hockey, Prevent Blindness suggests that the proper sports eye protection also be included. Recommendations may be found at www.preventblindness.org/ recommended-sports-eye-protectors. The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Users can also view other patients’ ratings of providers. Over time, the app will use this feedback to refine and improve recommendations. The app also provides state officials with insight into provider performance and utilization. Participants used opioid data from the state open data portal and other sources, as well as mobile, GIS and other technologies to develop app prototypes, data visualizations and other tools focused on prevention, rescue and recovery. Holiday Tree Tips Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the sea-

son. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for

them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Skin Protection Information Posted year-round, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to

cover often-missed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skincancer.org.

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed

Tips Shared For Healthier Holidays The American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative offers simple swaps for healthier holidays. The association provides its latest recipes and science-backed health tips as part of Eat Smart Month, which was observed in November. Taking small steps and avoiding one common mistake - putting good habits on hold is recommended. People may celebrate the season with no regrets by enjoying special occasion foods in moderation and swapping in healthier substitutions when they have control over the menu. To be at one’s peak this holiday season, American Heart Association-approved recipe hacks are offered. Additional recipes are available at www.heart.org/eatsmartmonth. About 70 percent of the sodium Americans consume comes from processed, prepackaged, or restaurant foods. Reading labels is a simple way to net healthy results. Compare the nutrition facts on similar foods and go for the one with less sodium, including frozen varieties. Salt can be replaced with herbs and spices. Lemon juice, citrus zest, or hot chilies can add extra flavor without the added sodium.

Canned fruits packed in juice or water rather than syrup are recommended. Fruit is plenty sweet without added sugars. Overly ripe fruit can be used to sweeten baked goods. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a healthy swap with the same texture and flavor. Instead of butter, a healthier vegetable oil can be used, or people may substitute equal parts unsweetened applesauce when baking. Sneaking in a vegetable like pureed sweet potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower can boost nutrition. Frozen cubes of pureed vegetable can be ready in the freezer. Using half whole wheat and half white flour is also recommended. Whole grains are a great nutritional boost, and mixing the flours helps to disguise the swap. People can sip smarter by adding seasonal fruit to old-fashioned water. There are plenty of ways to jazz up a beverage without adding alcohol. Readers are encouraged to try infusing cranberries, pomegranate arils, or orange slices into sparkling water. To learn more, readers may visit www.heart.org or call 800-AHA-USA1.

Spiced Yogurt Muffins Christmas morning is an exciting and joyous time for families. Children are anxious to rush downstairs and see what Santa has left under the tree, and parents are eager to see the looks on youngsters’ happy faces. Make-ahead muffins can be a quick breakfast that is perfect for Christmas mornings at home. Having a fast and easy breakfast at the ready on Christmas morning allows families to jump right into the festivities rather than spending too much time in the kitchen. This recipe for Spiced Yogurt Muffins, courtesy of the National Dairy Council, Dannon, and McCormick, can be made in advance and then enjoyed while peeking into Christmas stockings or watching holiday parades on television. This big-batch recipe is ideal for feeding a houseful of overnight holiday guests. Or it can be prepared in advance and doled out as needed throughout the week. The muffins also can be made as a treat for holiday office luncheons and

may be cut in half for smaller yields. Spiced Yogurt Muffins (Yield: 50 servings) 6 1/2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt 4 cups water, room temperature 1 box (5 lbs) Gold Medal Muffin Mix, whole grain variety 3 tablespoons McCormick pumpkin pie spice 2 tablespoons McCormick chipotle cinnamon Directions: 1 - Combine yogurt and water in mixing bowl. Whisk until blended. Set aside. 2 - Add spices to dry muffin mix in a large bowl. Add yogurt and water mixture to the muffin mixture. Mix until just blended. Do not overmix. 3 - Using a scoop, portion into greased or lined muffin pans. Bake at 350 F for 24 minutes (or 17 to 20 minutes in a convection oven), until the tops are golden brown.
