Seventh-grader Julianna Fry won the Martin Meylin Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 7. This was the first in-person academic competition at Martin Meylin in nearly two years. Twenty-seven middle school students participated in this year’s spelling bee. Sixteen remained by round three, and only four were left standing by round eight. Seventh-graders Finlee Parrish and Lilah Schwartz had battled for the alternate spot, with Lilah winning after correctly spelling ziggurat. Spelling continued, with Ben Rimert placing fourth and Manav Joshi placing third. Eighth-grader Eliana Ruiz

Lime Spring Square Honored Lime Spring Square, a 98acre, multi-phased, mixed use development project in Lancaster, received the 2021 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The project, a unique approach to postconstruction stormwater management, was a collaborative project by the team of RGS Associates, LandStudies Inc., and Richard F. Mulá Architects, a member of the CORE Design Group. Each year, the Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence provide statewide recognition to businesses and organizations involved in a cross-section of environmental initiatives, such as cleaning up watersheds,

saving energy, eliminating pollution and reducing waste. The Lime Spring Square project used floodplain restoration instead of the conventional infiltration or detention facilities, a plan that utilized best management practices to meet regulatory requirements. The team devised an approach which included the removal of sediment to reconnect the stream channel with the floodplain, the creation of large areas of interconnected wetland habitats, and the rehabilitation of groundwater interchange. In total, this project restored 4,750 linear feet of stream bank and created 8.5 acres of wetlands, reducing runoff to the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
October and November are known as leaf season in Lancaster city, and a special group of people known as the Clean Team work seven days a week to keep downtown Lancaster sidewalks and other public areas free of leaves and other debris. This effort helps to ensure the city’s central business district is both clean and safe for residents, visitors, and businesses. The Clean Team works to keep downtown Lancaster
clean year round, but during autumn the falling leaves from Lancaster’s tree canopy require constant upkeep. The team uses two machines called billy goats. During peak leaf season, the Clean Team averages about 20 bags a day. It will continue to remove leaves through January. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 15, the team removed 7,750 pounds or 310 bags from public areas in Lancaster’s central business district.
The team is also responsible for removing flyers or stickers, graffiti, and trash, as well as pulling weeds, reporting quality-of-life issues such as burned-out street lights, and power washing public seating and other downtown amenities. The Clean Team patrols areas of high foot traffic in the city known as the Downtown Investment District and are easily recognizable in their blue uniforms. They partner with the Lancaster

Energy Assistance Resources Posted PPL Electric Utilities reminds customers that multiple assistance programs exist for those struggling to pay their energy bills. Income-eligible programs available to customers include the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the OnTrack payment plan, Operation HELP, and the Winter Relief Assistance Program (WRAP).
ERAP is a federal program that helps renters affected by financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic with free money to cover rent, utility bills, fees, and pastdue balances. LIHEAP is a federal program that provides grants to income-eligible households to help with home energy bills or to pay off past-due balances. The OnTrack payment plan aims to make managing energy bills easier with
lower fixed monthly payments and debt forgiveness for qualifying customers. Operation HELP is a fuel fund supported by donations from PPL Electric Utilities employees and customers that provides grants to help customers with their energy bills. WRAP offers free energy-efficiency products, such as LED bulbs, to income-eligible customers to help them reduce the amount of energy they use,
and in turn, reduce their bill. All customers, regardless of income, can also take advantage of other bill help services, including budget billing or choosing a payment due date that works for their budget. Additionally, PPL Electric Utilities urges all its customers to share this information with anyone they think may benefit from these programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both boards and members. Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association the YMCA of the Roses effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs.

Fall Blast 5K Aids Bench Mark Park Dec. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. Program and is open to children ages 6 from pg 12
The staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy presented a check for $27,500 to volunteers and board members from Bench Mark Program.
HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Organization (HPTCO) held the 18th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk on Oct. 2 in Lititz. All proceeds were earmarked to benefit Bench Mark Program (BMP), a strengthbased family of mentors that uses weight lifting, academics, and career coaching to propel at-risk youths toward success. The event raised a total of $27,500 for BMP. Furthermore, the board of HPTCO announced that 100% of the proceeds from the 2022 Fall Blast 5K,
scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, will also support BMP, thereby continuing to fund this community program as it aims to grow and expand its reach in Lancaster County. Will Keifer, executive director of BMP, noted that BMP’s plans for the future include moving to a new location. HPTCO is the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of HARTZ Physical Therapy. The company and organization have raised more than $275,000 for various local charities through the Fall Blast and
other charitable initiatives over the past 21 years. Bench Mark Program is a 501(c)(3) charity based in Lancaster city that provides opportunity for underserved youths by creating positive gym spaces where they can feel safe, understood, and empowered. Through physical exercise, academic counseling and career coaching, BMP offers a support network on which at-risk students can rely for the rest of their lives.
