Each year, Lampeter-Strasburg High School invites students from Hans Herr Elementary School to attend the Holiday Workshop, where they participate in hands-on learning activities coordinated by the high-schoolers. On Dec. 1 and 2, over 200 third-grade students attended the 26th annual Holiday Workshop.
The workshop was divided into four stations, each hosted in a different classroom. In the wood technology classroom, students learned how an assembly line functions and used one to produce a gumball machine. When they visited the graphics lab, the third-graders designed a cover for an activity book, utilizing tools commonly employed by the desktop publishing industry. In the design engineering classroom, participants learned about architectural drawing and constructed a graham cracker house. In the agricultural room, the children learned about the agriculture industry and the process of farming soybeans that are used to manufacture products.
The soybean science station was operated by members of the Garden Spot FFA, and the lesson was designed by 11th-grade FFA member Sydney Albright. “The overall goal was to introduce the third-graders to the world of agriculture,” said Albright. “We wanted to teach them about something relevant, so we decided to pick soybeans. The United States is the second-largest exporter of soybeans in the world.”
At the FFA students’ station, youngsters first learned about the daily activities of a soybean farm, how the plants are cultivated, what nutrients they need and how the produce is harvested. The third-graders then used materials derived from soybeans to create candles, crayons, hand lotion and lip balm. “The kids loved it; they loved learning about the science involved and getting to participate in something that was hands-on,” said Albright. “It was really cool to see them put it all together and learn something.”
Albright has been a member of FFA since her freshman year of high school and was selected to assemble the lesson because of her interest in pursuing a career as an agricultural educator. The high school FFA students often mentor the Junior FFA members at Martin Meylin Middle School, but Albright said that participating in the holiday workshop gives the high-schoolers a fresh perspective. “(Students) that help run the station at the Holiday Workshop get to see the perspective of their teachers and what they normally do,” said Albright. “I’d love to help with the lesson again next year.”

When Esther Glick of Manheim Township entered the antiques business 24 years ago, she started from scratch and learned as she went. Glick had no previous experience with antiquing but decided that it would define the beginning of a new chapter in her life. “For me it’s really rewarding,” Glick said. “I love the thrill of the hunt. I love seeing things get repurposed.”
Glick described the antiques business as her third career. Her first career was painting, and she and her husband operated their own business. Glick then made a career for herself in real estate for many years before embarking on a new journey. “I was at a point in my life where I needed to make a change,” Glick said.

School Bus Stop Safety Tips Posted
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently reinforced the importance of school transportation safety and highlighted the potential school transportation challenges posed by changing daylight conditions. The results of Operation Safe Stop, an annual school bus enforcement and education initiative that was held on Oct. 19, were also announced.
Operation Safe Stop data revealed that participating school districts and law enforcement agencies reported witnessing 155 violations of the law, down from the 252 reported last year. The initiative is held in conjunction with local and state police departments, school districts, and pupil transportation providers to conduct enforcement, raise public awareness about the consequences of improper passing of school buses, and reduce occurrences.
The School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet from the bus when approaching a school bus with its red lights
flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop. The only exception to this law is when motorists encounter a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a divided highway when lanes of the highway are clearly separated by a divider, such as a concrete barrier or grassy median.
Some safety tips for students to remember while waiting for or loading and unloading the bus include getting to the school bus stop five minutes early, so they will not have to run across the road to catch the bus. When waiting for the bus, students should stay away from traffic. Students should line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus. Children should never run after the school bus if it has already left the bus stop. Children should never push when getting on or off the school bus.
For more information about school bus safety, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and search for “School Bus Safety Tips.”

On the cusp of this large change in her life, Glick’s counselor gave her an assignment: Find something to do that was strictly for herself and that she enjoyed. One day, while driving, she spotted an auction sign and memories began to flood back to her of frequenting auctions when she was younger and how much she had enjoyed it.
Glick made up her mind instantly; she began setting up at markets and scouring auctions for items. Soon after, Glick found a property for rent near Strasburg, and her business and collection evolved into what is now Antique Village of Strasburg, located at 227 Hartman Bridge Road, Ronks.
Antique Village of Strasburg comprises three buildings, each packed from wall to wall with vintage items and antiques. Glick works with over 40 dealers to acquire items and employs her own tried-and-true methods for hunting down valuables. While most people in the business find their items at thrift stores and yard sales, Glick said if she’s not running the counter at her store, you can find her combing through items at an auction. “For me it’s the best and most authentic way,” Glick said. “It’s suitable for some people to go to thrift stores, but it’s just not my way.”
When Glick first opened Antique Village of Strasburg, there was only one other antique store in the area. Today, Strasburg is populated with different markets and
storefronts that sell antiques, and the way many people conduct their business has changed. The advent of social media means many people are more prone to finding antiques on the internet, but Glick believes there’s a reason that physical antique stores haven’t fallen by the wayside.
“The game has changed a bit,
but I think in the antique world, the real success is having a home base,” Glick said.
Glick has hired more help for her business in recent years but has no plan to quit the antiques game anytime soon. “It’s more rewarding than I ever thought it would be,” Glick said. “I’m still in love with it after 24 years.”
Penn Square ABWA will meet virtually on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Southern Market Lancaster, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster.
The meeting will feature a presentation by Dawn Regner, principal of New Dawn Rising. Regner will share “Mastering Your Time: Creating Magic in the Moments,” focusing on time management, including looking at what matters most, goal setting, boundaries, self-love and time batching.

Congregation Shaarai Shomayim will host vocalist and songwriter Hadar Orshalimy during its Miller Music Festival on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim’s Temple,
75 E. James St., Lancaster. Hadar will also participate in Shabbat services on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., also in the sanctuary.
Hadar Orshalimy is an acclaimed Israeli vocalist, songwriter, and cantorial soloist based in New York City. Her follow-up jazz album, titled “Witchcraft - The Jewish Women of the Great American Songbook,” is set for release in March and honors the woman song-
writers of the great American songbook.
In 1991, Rosanne and David Selfon endowed the annual Miller Music Festival in memory of her parents, Madaline and Lester Miller. Friends Continue To Support Police
In 2023, the Friends of the Force will celebrate their 14th year of supporting the West Lampeter Township Police Department (WLTPD). The 12-member Friends organization is a 501(c)(3) whose goal is to promote civic spirit in support of public safety and security.
Working closely with Police Chief Brian Wiczkowski, the Friends support the WLTPD by reimbursing the township for equipment repairs, officer training, and some new equipment. West Lampeter Township provides the bulk of the funding for WLTPD. The Friends can supplement this funding when needs arise outside the normal budgetary process, helping to limit policing costs per resident.
In 2022, thanks to the
contributions of local citizens, the Friends reimbursed the township more than $38,952 for police purchases it made. The funds assisted in the purchase of emergency and safety equipment, officer weapons, software, training and more.
In 2023, the Friends hope to provide equipment for the three new patrol cars being purchased by West Lampeter. In
addition, the Friends are committed to assisting with full implementation of the AXON Virtual Reality training to help train officers in de-escalating potentially volatile situations. The Friends will continue to provide PoliceOne Academy online training for every officer. For more information, visit www.friendsoftheforce.com or call 717-917-2184.

Easy Fitness Resolutions
Resolutions to get in shape, exercise more, and eat healthier foods are popular each January. Optimism reigns when making resolutions, but for many, the difficulty lies in keeping them. Individuals looking to get healthier in the year ahead can try several strategies to stay the course.
Individuals are encouraged to plan to wake up earlier. Waking up a half hour earlier each day can have a substantial impact. This small amount of extra time can be devoted to meditation, deep breathing exercises, or even some yoga stretches.

Resolutions
Another goal is to prioritize moving around more frequently. Many people with office jobs spend hours sitting in front of computers. A sedentary lifestyle can have an adverse effect on overall health. Individuals can set a timer or use a reminder on a fitness tracker to prompt them to get up and move around for a little bit every hour.
To eat healthier, consuming more vegetables is a good idea. Vague resolutions like “I will eat better” are difficult to maintain because there is no specific goal to achieve. Rather, a resolution like eating a fruit or vegetable at every meal is a measurable goal. Vegetables can be hidden in favorite foods, such as desserts. Swapping pasta noodles for spiralized zucchini is another option.
Individuals are encouraged to evaluate their posture, as posture tends to decline with age, according to AARP. This change can cause the spine to lose flexibility. Certain stretches may help people to improve their posture and their long-term health.
When walking, people should add “bursts” to their walk. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic tout the benefits of interval training. While high-impact workouts may not be appropriate for everyone, adding little speed bursts to a daily walk can provide significant health benefits. Aim for 30 to 60 seconds of rapid walking at regular intervals to shake up the workout.
Drinking more water can have health benefits. Increasing water intake can help one feel fuller, thus reducing the likelihood that he or she will overeat. Individuals should gradually increase their water intake by adding a few ounces each day until drinking water becomes a habit.
Another strategy is to exercise outside. To switch up their normal routine, individuals can make use of the great outdoors to exercise. Instead of 3 miles on the treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym, they may opt for the same distance on a local hiking trail.
Healthy resolutions are easier to keep when individuals have specific and achievable goals.

Martin Meylin Middle School recently recognized the Students of the Month for October and November. Students were honored for demonstrating tenets of responsibility: self-discipline, self-control, punctuality, completing work on time and to the best of their ability, and
fulfilling obligations.
In October, the core subject teachers chose the honorees. The Students of the Month in sixth grade were Kaitlyn Barrall, Alexandra Bournelis, Brielle Grove, Ava Menapace, Rudra Patel, Avery Petruso, Sophia Sharpe and Dominic Walmer. In seventh grade, the
honorees were Lucy Boyd, Jacoby Campadonico, Lucas Crawford, Kaylee Mackenzie, Leah Steffy, Norah Steffy, Riley Tollaksen and Carter Wilson. The school also recognized eighth-graders Jackson Allison, Emma Avigdor, Addison Deckman, Brianna Jackson, Bella Kinert, Brody Lawrence, Kiki
Ray and Kyle Wagner.
In November, the creative arts teachers selected the honorees. The school recognized Judy Al-Kerdi, Gannon Black, Noah Brubaker, Baylee Cunningham, Elliot DeBruin, Emaly Jones, Luke Metzler, Olivia Rosa, Eden Weidman, Micah White and Olivia Zook.
Factory Prepares For Phase 2
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We would really love to work with a local community contractor (on phase two of our remodel project),” said Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.
Phase one, which included modifications to the gymnatorium of the former Paradise Elementary School, was completed in early 2022. Now, a pre-bid meeting for contractors interested in bidding on phase two has been set for Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at 2 p.m. at The Factory. Phase two will include addressing the need for Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bathrooms, repositioning the stairs that lead from the entry to the loft, and raising the ceiling height in the kitchen.
Phases two and three of the project will be funded by separate Redevelopment Authority Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). Nagle explained that the winning contractor will need to comply with prevailing wage requirements and be familiar with paperwork and regulations included with that qualification. Depending on the bid received, alternate items the contractor might bid on include a separate ADA-compliant bathroom and a chairlift to make the gymnatorium stage more accessible. Bids must be received by Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, with work completed by May of 2023.
According to Nagle, phase three will focus on the front entryway of the 1927 building, which features white columns associated with schools constructed in that time period. Although the building has been recognized for its historical significance, it has false windows in the front. “(Phase three) will clean up the front entry to make it accessible and safe,” said Nagle, who added that a bricked-in archway on the east side of the building will be reopened to create an ADA-accessible entrance. Nagle said that there is an identical bricked-in entrance on the west side and that he has been told originally one entrance was for boys and the other was for girls.
After working with CityScapes Commercial Roofing of New Holland on a previous contract, Nagle said the organization is hoping to work once again with an area contractor. “We had a phenomenal relationship with CityScapes,” reported Nagle. “We were able to do some cool things with CityScapes because they captured the heart of our mission and what we’re about.”
Contractors who would like to know more about the bid process may call 717-6879594. Readers who would like to know more about The Factory may visit www.thefactory ministries.com or search for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook.
