Drive-Through Meal To Benefit Mount Hope Nazarene BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Saturday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will offer a curbside pickup meal as a fundraiser for the residence. The pickup will take place at the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The snow date for the event will be Saturday, March 6. The meal includes chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, gourmet cheese

Inviting teens to check out Teen Central are Janelle Heying (left), executive director, and Brenda Hershey, kitchen coordinator.

Providing A Safe Space For Teens “Our mission is to minister to the youths of Manheim,” said Janelle Heying, executive director of Teen Central. “We want to provide spiritual development and quality life experiences for teens.” Teen Central, located at 15 S. Wolf St., offers drop-in programming four days a week for middle school and high school students. “We start with a snack and then have about an hour to 90 minutes of time for the kids to hang out,” Heying stated. “They love playing dodgeball or, if the weather is nice, they’ll play kickball outside.” The facility features basketball courts, air hockey, foosball and more. “We will also put out craft supplies for kids who want to do that, or we let kids just hang out and talk

for the first hour or so,” she noted. “Then, we pull everyone together and we do a Bible study.” Lessons may range from small group discussions to games or videos, she said.

“My goal is always to provide a safe and welcoming space for teens to come in, where they know they are always going to be loved and accepted,” Heying said. Each session ends with a free meal for the teens. “Our cook is wonderful,” Heying remarked about Brenda Hershey. “We are so blessed to have her. She puts a lot of heart and love into everything she makes.”

Ginny and Bruce McMillin are two of the residents who live at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.

Along with the basic framework of each session, Teen Central offers teens opportunities to learn new skills. “One part of our mission is to open kids up to life skills,” Heying said. “We have a sewing room, and we teach them basic sewing skills. Before COVID, we would have them help prep food in the kitchen. When we have projects to do or things to install here, we invite the students to get involved and use power tools or see how things are put together.” The organization also hosts field trips for teens regularly, including snow tubing, bowling and roller skating. As a nonprofit, Teen Central relies on donations from churches, businesses and individuals. The organization typically holds a fall fundraising banquet but had to cancel that in 2020.

At a time when aging in place has become a focus for the elderly, three entities in the Lititz and Manheim areas have come together to provide in-home care. “We are using our continuum background to support those who want to age in place to make sure they’re doing that safely,” said Leanne Kiralfy, executive director of Your Neighborhood Connection (YNC), a home care agency that was formed by the collaboration of Luthercare and Moravian Manor of

potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and dessert. Proceeds will benefit the facility, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation care for seniors regardless of their ability to pay. “With a passion to serve seniors with lower incomes, Mount Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Most seniors at Mount Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care. A gap of approximately $150 exists between what a senior is able to pay and the cost of their daily care.” The drive-through meal provides a way not only to support seniors, but also to serve a warm meal in a dreary season, Wilson noted.

The town of Lititz is known for a festival that is normally held in midFebruary, but Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, wants to make it clear that the event that will happen in downtown Lititz from Friday, Feb. 12, through Saturday, Feb. 20, is not that event. “We are not calling it Fire & Ice because it’s not (that),” said DeKarske, who made it clear that Fire & Ice will not be held for 2021. Instead, it will be replaced by the 2021 Lititz Ice Walk, which will include more than 50 ice sculptures and extended hours at many stores and restaurants. The Ice Walk will include a variety of sculpted creations. The plan is to place interactive pieces near the Lititz Springs Park and the Lititz Post Office, with these pieces interspersed with smaller pieces that families can visit as

they stroll through Lititz. “There will be a couple of the larger sculptures that are carved in place on display by Feb. 12,” said DeKarske. “They will be there as long as Mother Nature allows.” Smaller pieces, which will be carved before delivery, will be brought by freezer truck from DiMartino Ice Company of Jeannette. DeKarske will have a freezer truck available in Lititz to hold those so they can be gradually placed. “On the one block, we will put out some at the beginning, and every couple days we will add more,” explained DeKarske, who has arranged for a group of volunteers to place the crystalline sculptures. “We are trying to spread them out to encourage people to walk around (outside).” Among this year’s sculptures will be likenesses of dogs and cars, along with a Statue of Liberty and Mike, the shorter monster from “Monsters, Inc.”

Teen Central from pg 1 On average, about 30 students participate in Teen Central activities on a typical night, but upwards of 85 students are registered with the organization. While some things have changed at Teen Central due to the pandemic, including daily temperature checks, required masks and social distancing, one thing has remained constant: “My goal is always to provide a safe and welcoming space for teens to come in, where they know they are always going to be loved and accepted,” Heying said. “I want this to be a safe space for the students to be themselves. cognitive deficit, and behavior training for caregivers is key. Resources offered by YNC’s three partners means a continuum of care when a patient living in the greater community is ready to come on campus. “Sometimes we are just going in to provide that support until the person is ready to move,” explained Kiralfy, adding that having a relationship with the patient and his or her family can help start a conversation about or ease a transition to a higher level of care. The advent of COVID-19 has affected safety protocols for in-home care.

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

Lititz in 2015 and recently added partner Pleasant View Communities of Manheim. COVID-19 has created a larger niche for in-home care, and Kiralfy noted that YNC is qualified to offer necessary services on and off the three campuses. “We don’t only serve clients on campus, but we reach out and serve the greater community as well,” she noted. “That’s our mission.” YNC, which is located at 706 Rothsville Road, Lititz, offers a variety of services ranging from companion care to end-of-life support, as well as licensed practical nurses who can administer medications and treatments. Kiralfy noted that with inhome safety as a priority, companion services may include helping with meals, meal planning, going to the grocery store, light housekeeping, checking mail, bed linen changes, and laundry. Personal care services include dressing, grooming, and bathing. “We work hand in hand with some cases that involve hospice,” said Kiralfy, noting that hospice services may stay with a patient for a limited amount of time, but additional caregivers can make it possible for people to stay in their homes at the end of life. Memory issues are a factor for many clients, so safety evaluations are part of protocol and partners located on the three campuses may be consulted. “Our partners have been in business more than 100 years combined, so we have those resources to pull from,” shared Kiralfy, who noted that choosing which caregivers to place with which clients and offering additional dementia,

“We have tried to mitigate that risk factor by not crossing over caregivers from different campuses and limiting the number of caregivers that see a client,” said Kiralfy. “A lot of folks want to stay in their homes. (To help them) to do that safely, we are making the appropriate modifications for those folks.” YNC served its first patients in 2016. The collaboration with Pleasant View was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health until December 2020. On The Mat, Manheim Central Faces E-town

After securing a 49-24 victory over Palmyra, Manheim Central wrestling coach Billy Chamberlain said it was nice for his grapplers to see some success for their hard work. He noted freshman Gabe Thomas, at 106 pounds, gaining a fall after being tied 2-2 in the third. At 132, Uriah Warner had his ups and downs but pulled out a 9-7 win. On Jan. 27, the Barons lost to Elizabethtown in a close match, 42-33. Central trailed 36-6 and came roaring back, cutting the deficit to 36-33. Rocco Daugherty was losing when he rallied for a late pin. “Even with adversity we were one win away from winning the match, Chamberlain said. “Even when down 36-6, they never gave up and kept fighting. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons are on a serious roll. They beat Solanco in a low scoring 32-27 contest in Manheim on Jan. 21. Summer Bates and Maddie Knier each hit free throws to pull away from the Golden Mares. Manheim coach Tyson Hayes, who had appendectomy surgery and watched the game on the Baron Nation live stream webcast, was a spectator. Tom McCabe coached the team. Hayes was pleased with everyone buying into their roles and contributing. Central was down seven points with three minutes remaining and Hayes liked the demeanor of his squad. “I never saw panic, Hayes said. “It was a team that just fought and found a way to win. Some nights you just have to gut one out and that’s what they did. On Jan. 26 the Lady Barons beat Lampeter-Strasburg, 41-33. Knier had a team-high 17 points and Rachel Nolt chipped in 14, nailing two 3-pointers. Central led 14-11 after one quarter and 23-15 at halftime. A strong defensive effort in the third quarter limited the Pioneers to only four points and allowed the Lady Barons to pull away. Execution and defense carried Central, Hayes said. “If you do both of those you are going win more games than not, he said. “I was proud of the energy and effort they brought. They were dialed into the game plan and were going do anything to pull out a win. It was a pure team effort, and we are getting better. RIFLE The Barons and Garden Spot were both undefeated before the teams squared off in a doubleheader. The Barons won the first match Jan. 21, in a close 496-495 outcome. Junior Anna Haldeman

and freshman Nate Sauder each posted 100 scores. Junior Kami Groff and freshman Kyler Groff both shot 99 and freshman Gabby Fittery had a 98. The Barons were slightly off the mark in the second game, losing 495-489. Kami Groff was MC’s top shooter at 99. Haldeman and Sauder each posted a 98 and junior Ellie McCabe and sophomore Genna Eberly both fired 97. Central has an inexperienced team and lot of pressure falls on the Barons’ top shooters to fire well. “We have a young team, and I was short one of my juniors, Manheim coach Steve Waddington said. “A lot falls on Anna, Kami and Ellie. If any of them have an off day, it pretty much falls on the sophomore and freshmen to have a really good night. “Honestly, I was glad we got the one win against Garden Spot. They have a good team and were undefeated until we had our double header. I was thrilled to see freshman Nathan Sauder come through with his first 100 on Thursday. In addition, freshman Kyle Groff posted a 99. This is good for the team seeing the first-year shooters scores coming up. It definitely helps. SWIMMING Conestoga Valley beat the Baron boys 94-61. Central’s 200 free relay team of Brode Sipel, Wyatt Kupres, Paetyn Knepp and Mason Weaver won with a time of 1:45.96. The CV won 84-67 in the girls’ meet. MaKenna Enck won 50 free, Olivia Faulhaber won 100 free, Gabby Fittery won 500 free, and Raegan won 100 breaststroke. The 200 free relay team of Reagan Nissley, Gabrielle Fittery, Chole Enck and Olivia Faulhaber won on a time of 1:57.58 BOWLING Manheim lost to Elizabethtown on Jan. 21 by a three-game total of 2674-2207 for a 7-0 loss at Clearview Lanes. Baron’ coach Alan Slides said E-town is good, but his squad struggled with adjusting to the conditions and the amount of oil on the lanes. Holly Hunt, a freshman, had a team-high 489 on game scores of 140-161-188 (a team-high). Jesse Hurst rolled a 466, Cole Shontz 442, Landen Statts 411 and Hailey Kowalski 399. Jan. 23 at Canes Lanes the Barons defeated L-S 5-2 on a three-game total of 2123-2119. “We struggled, Slides said, “but we did enough to win. Hurst lead the squad with a 506. Hunt added a 450, followed by Statts with a 423, Shontz a 376 and Kowalski a 368. Slides wanted to highlight two junior varsity bowlers. Sophomore Chase Hoke had a first game

score of 162, a high for him this year. Fellow JV bowler, Aaron Vogel, a freshman, had a 425 triple, which would have been the third highest varsity score. He came out for the team late and his first scores this season were in the 70s. Now he has a 425. Manheim lost to Cocalico Jan. 25 by a three-game total of 29162162. Hurst was the high scorer for MC with 171-166-177 for a 514 triple. Hunt had a 177 game, which is over his 158 average. The Barons suffered a loss to Lancaster Catholic, 2374-2340. Slides said his bowlers did not put frames together at the same time. Hurst had a 186-178-197 for 561 triple. Hunt had a 187 game, about 28 pins over her average; Statts had 156 and 168 games, both over his average and Catey Sides had a 147, about seven pins above average. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Sophomore Trey Grube had a career-high 33 points On Jan. 21 in a 59-36 victory over Solanco.

Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said Fisher said. “Matt is a two-year piece. He is a hard worker and as Grube got hot early with five starter and does the hard work good a guy to coach as you could first-half 3-pointers. In the third behind the scenes. You can count ask for. On Jan. 25, L-S held off Cenquarter it went from a four to 23 on him to hit the open shot. He’s points lead quickly, Fisher said. dependable. One game we might tral for a 74-70 win. Camryn Manheim spread the floor and need him to play 25 minutes and Eberly paced the Barons with 28 the next 18. He is a nice utility points, 19 in the second half. exploited Solanco’s 2-3 zone. The Barons beat KennardDale, 63-37 on Jan. 22. Matt Siegrist had a career-high 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, and Trey Grube added 10 points. Tied 10-10 after the first, Central broke the game open, outscoring KD 15-3 in the second quarter for a 25-13 halftime lead. “Mount Hope has not done a large banquet-type drive-through meal before this, but I thought up the idea because winter tends to be very cold and gray - the ‘winter blues’ - and people might not feel totally comfortable yet with going out to a restaurant for dining, she explained. “This is a safe option and a nice way to help support a local nonprofit and of course enjoy some wonderful home-cooked Lancaster County comfort food on a cold winter day. This year has been particularly difficult on residents of Mount Hope, Wilson remarked, adding that the retirement community continues to look for creative ways to cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care. Not only will proceeds from the meal help seniors continue to stay at Mount Hope, but the money will also cover additional expenses. “It helps with the purchasing of personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses in additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced revenue, providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers and acquiring technology to combat residents’ social isolation and provide a positive family connection, Wilson explained. Preorders will be taken for meals until Wednesday, Feb. 17. Extra meals will be available on the day of the event while supplies last. The cost of the meal is $16, and no handling of money will take place at the pickup. Instead, payment may be left in a drop-box in the form of exact change or a check made payable to Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. To reserve a meal, readers may call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org.

Every year the school chooses a local organization to support with gifts in lieu of children exchanging gifts in their classrooms. This year, the school decided to partner with Mount Joy Helping Services, located on the corner of Mount Joy and Concord streets in Mount Joy, to provide various food and household items for people who are experiencing hardship this winter. Students and their families contributed food items, gift cards, and household supplies.

Food and other items, loaded into a car by Mrs. Fisher’s fourth-grade students, were ready for transportation to Mount Joy Helping Services.
