Northwest EMS Holds Food Drive BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ccording to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, almost 75,000 people in Lancaster County are food insecure. One in five children in the county lacks consistent access to enough food to live an active and healthy life. Northwest EMS is working to address this problem. For the month of February, the organization is holding its annual food drive to benefit local food banks. Donations will be accepted at the Elizabethtown EMS station, 380 W. Bainbridge St., or at the Manheim EMS station, 60 W. Colebrook St. “Our first food drive was in February of 2015,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager. “The February food drive, like many of our other outreach initiatives, is an opportunity to connect with individuals in the communities that we serve in hopes that we can impact individual health and community health.” Northwest EMS serves 12 townships and three boroughs, covering more than 200 square miles of response area in Lancaster, Dauphin
A
and Lebanon counties. The organization operates from stations in Elizabethtown, Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville. “(Food drive) donations are delivered to the three food banks geographically located within our primary response district -
“The February food drive, like many of our other outreach initiatives, is an opportunity to connect with individuals in the communities that we serve in hopes that we can impact individual health and community health.” specifically, the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, the East Donegal/Conoy (Christian) Food Bank and the Manheim Central Food (Pantry),” Shenk explained. She noted that the food drive allows people the flexibility to donate items on their own schedule. “Most people would happily support their community food banks
but find it difficult to coordinate delivery of items on the schedule the food banks might have for receiving donations,” Shenk stated. “By hosting a monthlong event and accepting donations at our stations, we make it easy for everyone. Since we are a 24-hour department, simply bring your donations to us and we will take care of everything else.” The collection runs through Sunday, Feb. 28. “Beginning on Monday, March 1, all of the donations will be gathered in one location and sorted for delivery,” she said. “All three food banks will receive the donations during the week of March 1, according to when they have volunteers to accept the donations.” Shenk encourages anyone to make donations, adding that people should avoid donating outdated food or food that will expire within the first few days of March. “If someone wanted to contribute perishable items, they need to coordinate that with me so that I can ensure proper handling of that item,” she noted. For more information on the food drive, readers may contact Shenk at 717-371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.
Inviting the public to contribute to a monthlong food drive through Northwest EMS are (from left) paramedic supervisor Michelle Shaffer, EMT Emmanuel Vizcaino-Perez and paramedic Lisa Latsha.

Now, their daughter Michelle Levengood is organizing a fundraiser to help the couple rebuild and recover. “I grew up in that house,” said Levengood, who has three siblings. “It was a total loss. They were able to get out with the dog, but one of their cats died in the fire. The other was seriously burned and is in the care of White Oaks Veterinary Hospital.”
“She also tried to get renter’s insurance, but she was denied.” Jeffrey, who has colon cancer, is on disability. Thousands of audience members did not get the opportunity to visit Mount Gretna last summer to enjoy professional theater performances. Now, after a year of dark stages, Gretna Theatre will kick off its 2021 season with a free livestreamed performance for the community. On Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., Gretna Theatre will present a program titled “Still Here.” Performances will highlight some of the theater’s past productions and
feature prior Gretna Theatre actors. The theme touches on the idea that even though audiences cannot meet in person, Gretna Theatre is still present to entertain, engage, educate, and transform - just in new and different ways. This evening serves as a fundraiser replacement for the canceled October gala and summer season, where the organization could not obtain its traditional revenue. The performance will be accompanied by a virtual auction of
unique experiences donated by local supporting businesses, and viewers can offer donations to help support Gretna Theatre begin its next season. The theater has had to furlough nearly all its employees and delay productions on a massive scale. It continues serving the community as a nonprofit through adapted arts education programs offered virtually to schools and community centers. Readers may visit www.gretna.givesmart.com to
register for the event, preview auction items, and see which local businesses are supporting the future of Gretna Theatre. The one-hour performance will also be broadcast on Gretna Theatre’s Facebook page. As a way to upgrade the experience while offering support to Gretna Theatre’s education programs, viewers can purchase a VIP guest pass, which comes with a handcurated appetizer box from Graze Lancaster available for pickup.

You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “When you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@mhalancaster.org.

Matt Musser, CPA, has returned to United Zion Retirement Community as its chief financial officer. During the last several years, Musser was the controller at Community Action Partnership and then the controller at Mennonite Home. Prior to that, Musser was the controller at United Zion and a senior manager at Baker Tilly. He is a Cocalico High School graduate and received his bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from Millersville University. Musser said that employment in senior living communities gives his work a strong sense of purpose as he can see the impact it makes on the lives of the residents. He noted that he likes the small community atmosphere because it allows him to get to know the residents and staff. Musser’s aims at United Zion include ensuring the organization’s long-term financial viability. Musser will be a core part of the team overseeing the new chapel and entrance renovation project that is slated to take place this spring at United Zion. Elizabeth Hess and Claire McClain, the credit. They keep things rolling during my absence.” Manheim beat Wilson behind an outstanding 498-487 score (500 is a perfect score). Haldeman, Frey and Kami Groff all fired perfect scores of 100. Nate Sauder and Eric Kreider were close behind at 99. “I was thrilled to see the team shoot the 498 against Wilson,” Waddington said. “I am seeing some of the younger shooters improving nicely and helping improve the team.” After a season-ending 491-487 loss to Manheim Township Feb. 9, the Barons finished with a 104 record, good for second place in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. McCabe and Natalia Winkler each posted 98. Fittery, Sauder and Kreider all fired 97. Waddington believes with another year of experience his young team will start getting their scores up a little more and be more consistent. He is also grateful for the cooperation of his squad. “For a team as young as they are, they are doing very well,” he said. “I truly feel blessed to have the group of kids I have this year. Everyone has been very supportive to each other and to me.” BOWLING The Barons defeated Elco Feb. 4. The win against the Raiders was a 7-0 triumph on game scores of 774663, 848-647 and 796-701 for a three-game total of 2418-2011. Ethan Howard led the way with a 188-160-201 for 549 triple. Freshman Landen Statts was only six pins behind Howard with a156205-182 for a 543 series. They were followed by Jesse Hurst 158-179166 for 503, Catey Sides 146-165141 for 452 and Hailey Kowalski who rounds out the top five with a 126-139-106 for a 371 triple. Other notable scores: on Junior Varsity, Cole Shontz, who has bowled varsity most of the season, had a 184101-170 for 455 and Josh Shaw rolled a 157-97-147 for 401. “It was very satisfying,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said about the win, which improved Manheim’s record to 4-3 league and 4-7 overall. “We beat them the first match of the year, 5-2. This time we stayed very consistent. And if someone had a bad game, someone else stepped up. Landon has actually been a surprise. As a freshman, I had never seen him before this season. He has made great progress His average went from 144 to 147 with just one match.” The Barons lost to Garden Spot Feb. 8 on a three-game total of 2554 to 2424. Hurst, who holds a 180 average, paced MC with a 173-193-186 for a 552 triple. WRESTLING The Barons lost to Lampeter-
Strasburg 51-21Tuesday night in Lampeter. Manheim had three falls and four wins. Earning pins were Gabe Thomas (106 pounds), Dakoda Thomas (152) and Brett Barbush (189). Uriah Warner earned an 8-6 decision at 138 pounds. Being aggressive, a few Manheim wrestlers got caught in moves and were pinned. Barons’ coach Billy Chamberlain didn’t fault the effort or aggressiveness. “I don’t think the score was indicative of how the kids wrestled,” said Chamberlain, whose team finished with an 8-8 record. “They went down swinging.” The Barons battled. Logan Forrest was down 7-1 and fought back to lose 10-9. Chamberlain said he wanted to make sure everyone got a match and had fun in the last match of the season. SWIMMING Manheim ended its season on a high note Feb. 9, gaining a convincing win on the girls’ side (7524) against Lancaster Catholic. Several girls had multiple firstplace finishes on the night, including MaKenna Enck, Chloe Enck, Raegan Nissley, Gabby Fittery, Olivia Faulhaber, Bode Sipel and Bryce Fawber. Four of these athletes are ninth graders, including MaKenna Enck (two relays and the 100 Backstroke), the meet’s biggest Baron winner overall. Makenna Enck, Nissley, Chloe Enck and Faulhaber won the 200 Medley Relay at 2:16.55. Fittery won the 200 Free (2:38.10). Nissley, besides winning the 100 breaststroke (1:26.93), was part of the winning 200 free relay with team (1:58.86) with Chloe Enck, MaKenna Enck and Faulhaber. Fittery, Nevins, Alexa Galbreath and Samara Bucher won the 400-free relay (5:26.36). Despite only having five boys swimming, the meet was close for the Barons, having lost by just five points, 53-49. Manheim coach Heather Fittery said Body Sipel, Paetyn Knepp, Owen Kupres and Bryce Fawber all did a great job on their last meet. Kneep won the 200 IM (2:34.65), Kupres the 100 free (1:06.45), Sipel won the 100 backstroke (1:09.28) and Fawber raced to the win in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.22). Sipel, Fawber, Colton Faulhaber and Kupres placed first in the 200 free (1:53.24). Though it was a challenging season with Covid-19, Fittery said this was an opportunity for normalcy. “It was a fast, short, season,” she said. “The swimmers didn’t have the conditioning time they needed to accomplish personal bests. They learned that this season was just about having the chance to be in the pool and not be too hard on themselves with how times and meets turned out.”

One conversation can change your life. In November 2019, Eric Slaugh flew to California to visit his brother. During the flight, Slaugh chatted with his seatmates, one of whom was on her way to Las Vegas to raise money for Sirua Aulo Academy in the Kapune region of Kenya. A dependable source of potable water was one of the specific needs for the school. The cause struck a chord. Prior to graduating from Hempfield High School in 2011, Slaugh had started the Society for Environmental Advocates club at his school. He earned a degree in chemical and environmental engineering from Clarkson University and then backpacked through part of Africa for two months. Slaugh eventually moved to Seattle, where he works on water and environmental issues. One of his projects involves the remediation of a site where a laundromat discharged chemicals into the soil. The chemicals
then leached into groundwater, and Slaugh’s team will work with regulatory agencies to decide how to treat the water so it can safely enter a nearby river. Similar concepts will be part of the well-building project that Slaugh has signed on to direct at Sirua Aulo Academy. He and a team of experts from the United States and Kenya have designed a well and pipelines that will provide water to the 300 students and staff members at the academy as well as the 3,000 people who live in the surrounding Maasai community. Engineers Without Borders provides support when needed, and Slaugh’s fundraising efforts are under the auspices of Seattle-based Village Volunteers. “ We will break ground when we have the money,” Slaugh shared, noting that the project needs at least $24,000 for drilling the well and putting in a pump. The construction of pipelines to the school and to the public access site, as See Kenya pg 16

The Red Cross donated money to help the couple with clothing, food and toiletries. Currently, Jeffrey and Chrstine are staying with Levengood’s sister in Mount Joy, but they are looking for a more permanent solution. “They are pretty much homeless right now,” Levengood noted. “They need to find a place to live while they raise money to rebuild, and it needs to be a place that’s pet friendly.” Losing everything in the fire has been devastating for the family, she stated. “My mom had items from my poppop, who served in Vietnam. There were things that are irreplaceable,” she said. “We’re taking this day by day and just trying to keep looking ahead.” To make a donation to the Polynones, readers may contact Levengood at 717490-1380.

Effort Aims To Provide Support United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) will launch Share OUR Stimulus, a fund for stimulus check donations to be distributed to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to COVID-19. Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a onetime gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc .org/stimulus. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to donate all or part of their stimulus check. Those who make more than the stimulus threshold are also encouraged to give, as are organizations such as UWLC’s Catalyst Sponsors, including Lancaster County Community Foundation and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which have each donated $10,000; M&T Bank which has contributed $7,500; and High Foundation which donated $5,000. In addition, Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is pledging to assist in promoting the fund through free billboard support. Whether someone received a stimulus check or not, he or she can support neighbors who are struggling to cover expenses not eligible for targeted support. For example, a young mother can receive WIC to help purchase baby formula, but diapers are disqualified. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website.

well as a storage tank at the school and a taphouse at the access site, will have additional costs. Solar panels will also need to be purchased and installed to keep the pump operational. Slaugh noted that similar projects in the area have been successful. Solar power will make the initial construction somewhat more complex, but it will be cheaper to operate and will require
less maintenance over the long run. “We think it’s a huge advantage,” Slaugh commented. “It won’t require diesel fuel, and there’s less to break. Making things repairable is of huge importance.” So far, Slaugh has raised $6,000 for his project through word-of-mouth, and he submitted a proposal for support to a Rotary club in Seattle. At the request of his mother,
Nancy, Slaugh is sharing the project with his hometown. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. As a reader, you may bring the coupon below to Gardner’s Mattress & More and claim your Free Gifts before the March 2 deadline.
FREE READER’S GIFTS As a reader of The Merchandisers & Advertisers, you are entitled to 4 Free Gifts. Free Tax Prep Service Begins The United Way of Lancaster County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is now scheduling appointments for tax preparation. The Lancaster VITA is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that help people file their taxes every year free of charge. The service is available to anyone who makes $62,000 or less and lives in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at VITA go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Customers get professional service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. In response to the pandemic, VITA has modified the way it delivers services this year to keep both clients and volunteers safe. VITA now offers a totally contactless, virtual option through a partnership with Get Your Refund. Get Your Refund allows clients to securely upload their tax information and documents. They will receive a call from an IRS-certified tax preparer who will prepare the tax return, review it with them, and send a secure email file with the completed return. There will also be Free File options and limited drop-off appointments at several locations throughout Lancaster County. Virtual and drop-off sites began operating on Jan. 25 to ensure that clients receive their refunds as quickly as possible. To schedule a drop-off appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, readers may call the United Way’s 211 referral service. Tax payers can schedule appointments and obtain information about VITA locations, eligibility requirements, and other details by visiting www.freetaxprep lancaster.org. VITA also offers a free online program that allows taxpayers to file federal and state tax returns at www.myfreetaxes.com.
