Manheim Central

Teen Central will host school supply giveaway

Back-to-school shopping can be expensive. Teen Central wants to help lessen the financial burden on families, so the nonprofit is hosting Pack-aBackpack Day, inviting children in kindergarten through grade 12 to fill a backpack with school supplies.

People are invited to bring their own backpacks to fill with a variety of supplies on Monday, Aug. 5, and Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. each evening, and people do not need to preregister.

Available items will include school supplies like pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, crayons, scissors and rulers, along with personal care items such as body wash, shampoo and deodorant.

This is the first time Teen Central had held an event like this,

and it’s a great way to extend the organization’s mission, said Janelle Heying, executive director.

in Manheim.”

Optimism will shine in “Annie JR.”

Will the sun really come out tomorrow? Find out when Creative Pursuits Academy presents “Annie JR.” at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The musical performance marks the culmination of a two-week summer theater camp, said Katelyn Marie Coryell, director and choreographer of

the show and executive director of Creative Pursuits Academy.

“Creative Pursuits has been putting camp on as a co-production with The Junction Center since 2022 and has offered camps to students in the greater Lancaster area since summer 2019,” Coryell shared. “Our students are rising fifth-graders through rising 12th-graders from all around Lancaster and the surrounding area.” Campers participate in rehearsals, healthy competition and team

“Teen Central hopes that we are able to give local families a head start with their back-to-school needs.”

“We are looking forward to this new way to serve students in our community,” she said. “The goal of this event is to provide free school supplies and hygiene items to students across all grade levels in the Manheim Central School District. In doing so, it is our hope to help meet some backto-school needs for local families while also exposing our neighbors to our building and ministry here

Teen Central is a faith-based nonprofit that offers a variety of resources for youths. The organization’s mission is to provide positive activities, mentoring relationships and promotion of social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth.

Heying said staff members are excited about a new way to support students in their community. “We understand that there is a lot that comes along with back-to-school shopping. From potentially purchasing new clothes, shoes, technology, school supplies and other needed items for students to excel during the school year, the cost can pile up quick,” she stated. “Through Pack-a-Backpack Day, Teen Central hopes that we are able to give local families a head start with their back-to-school needs. We encourage people to attend to see what items may be helpful in checking

Compass Mark aims to stop addiction before it starts

Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community. The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,” “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”

The ultimate goal is to manage and curb addiction or control the behavioral part of it

that can be controlled.

“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other choices and to connect with people in healthy ways.”

building exercises, while receiving instruction in acting, singing and dancing techniques.

This is the third time Coryell has staged “Annie,” and she said the show about a plucky young orphan adopted by a wealthy businessman always surprises. “As a show, ‘Annie’ has something new for you to take away each time you see it,” she shared. “It’s a show about respecting people for who they are, regardless of where you come from or what you think about the world. (It’s) a show about resounding, relentless optimism in a time where everything looks bleak. Everyone can use a bit of that optimism.”

Although “Annie JR.” will be presented after just two weeks of rehearsals, audiences should be prepared for a stellar production, said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director of The Junction Center.

“Guests can expect high-quality local theater with full, state-of-the-art production, including a 90-panel LED wall with interactive backdrops, a mesmerizing lighting design by Joanna Knepper and audio mixed by Ethan Scott,” he noted.

“Annie JR.” is a 90-minute show that will be performed with a brief intermission. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.junctioncenter productions.com.

Compass Mark from

Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. It drives its message home through workshops, skill-building, student assistance programs and good old-fashioned communication and interaction.

Last school year, Compass Mark connected with 8,000 kids in 66 schools from 28 school districts in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties.

“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how preven-

tion works. We’re actually saving lives. For every dollar spent on prevention, you’re saving $18 in the future. You’re saving taxpayers by nipping it in the bud.”

Some of the factors that put kids at risk for addiction include low commitment toward school, parental attitudes favorable toward antisocial behavior, low perceived risk of drug use and low neighborhood attachment.

“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much,

much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”

Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 full-time workers and about 20 part-time staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.

“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often and talking to kids early. When kids are younger, they’re sponges. They just soak it in. They’re at an age when they still think (adults) know what they’re talking about.”

Compass Mark was founded in 1966 as the National Council for Alcoholism, Lancaster County. Then the organization’s scope was broadened in the 1970s and ’80s to include a focus on preventing illegal drug use, and later gambling.

“We’ve evolved with the community,” said Steffen. For additional information on Compass Mark, go to www.compassmark.org.
