Manheim Historical Society turns 60, celebrates with ice cream social
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For 60 years, the Manheim Historical Society has focused on keeping the past alive. The organization recently received a certificate of congratulations from state Sen. Ryan Aument on reaching its six-decade milestone.
Aument presented the certificate at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., in July.
“Based in the Harry B. Shearer Heritage Center, the organization engages and educates the public on the people, places and events that have shaped the heritage and history of Manheim and the surrounding area,” Aument read from the document. “Displaying outstanding commitment to the preservation of historic and cultural heritage of Manheim, the Manheim Historical Society has truly proven itself to be an
asset to its community and this commonwealth.”
Founded in 1964, the Manheim Historical Society began with a group of citizens who wanted to honor the town’s rich history.
The founding members were Dr. Loy C. Awkerman, J. David Young, Harry Shearer, Herman Hart, George L. Heiges, Eugene Hollinger, Doris Hollinger and Herbert Obetz.
Over the years, the organization has expanded to include multiple properties and projects in Manheim. The society houses documents and other artifacts at the Heritage Center, located at 88 S. Grant St.; operates two historically accurate homes - the Fasig and Keath houses; oversees Stiegel Glassworks, located next to the train station; and holds a variety of programs among the displays in the station. The
historical society also maintains a trolley car at the station and is responsible for bringing the historic Howard Street Clock to the square in Manheim.
“We have been working very hard to maintain and preserve Manheim’s history,” said president Susan Williams. “Everything we do says, ‘Take a look. This is important.’”
The historical society continually updates its displays, adding items to its collection regularly. Earlier this year, it acquired a circa 1880 3,000-pound safe created by Mosler-Bahmann & Co. for Manheim-based George H. Danner & Co. The safe now sits in one of the former waiting rooms at the train station, where passengers were separated by gender.

“Once the queen is crowned, she will reign over the Farm Show, interacting with adults and children who attend the show,” Hess stated. Queens also attend all of the livestock competitions and hand out ribbons to the winners as well as attending the bake sale and auction at the Farm Show, among other responsibilities.
“Another major requirement of the queen is to represent the Manheim Farm Show at the State Fair Queen competition in Hershey, Pa., in January,” Hess said. “The queen committee works with our candidate in the weeks leading up to the competition, teaching her skills that are needed for the competition.” Other duties of the queen include teaching children about an aspect of agriculture through an Ag in the Classroom presentation.
Hess is hoping for a large turnout of former queens at this year’s Farm Show.
“We would love to have former queens come and join the celebration with the other former queens, be recognized for their contribution to Farm Show, and to encourage young girls to enter the Farm Show queen competition,” she said.

Giant offers back-to-school lunch ideas
The Giant Company’s team of dietitians shared five solutions to help families simplify food preparation for back-to-school lunches.
First, parents should get their children involved. Have children make a list of their favorite foods from each food group - starch, protein, vegetable, fruit, and dairy - and get them excited by bringing them to the store to shop for their favorites. Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.
Second, lunches should contain protein. Protein
helps keep stomachs full and minds focused. When thinking about breakfast, lunch and snacks, include quick and easy foods like lunch meat, cheese, nut butters, Greek yogurt or hard-boiled eggs.
The third tip is to get colorful. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients. Entice kids with daily color challenges to encourage produce variety. For example, Monday’s lunch can focus on red foods, Tuesday’s meal can feature orange foods, and so on.
Fourth, parents should stock convenience items. Be prepared with pre-sliced apple packs, granola bars, applesauce pouches and trail mixes available for grab-and-go after-school snacks, and load up on frozen waffles and pancakes, fruit cups, oatmeal pouches and
drinkable yogurts for easy breakfasts.
The fifth tip is to make dinner easy. Balanced dinners do not have to be elaborate. Keep it simple on busy weeknights with tried-and-true winners like breakfast for dinner or sandwiches with no-cook sides.
Giant’s dietitians also offer easy meal and snack ideas and recipes, simplified with five or fewer ingredients, at www .giantfoodstores.com/ pages/back-to-school -dietitian-picks.
To check out the latest schedule of Giant’s free, virtual dietitian classes, which include making dinner in under 30 minutes, creating produce-packed snacks and learning about simple lunchbox ideas, visit www .giantfoodstores.com/ wellness.
Donations to support youth mentoring programs
The Touchstone Foundation recently awarded Youth Mentorship Partnership funds. This new program supports training to allow staff members and volunteers to become mentors for youth mental wellness in Lancaster County. The Touchstone Foundation has awarded a total of $47,000 to Bench Mark Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County.
Bench Mark Program is a strength-based family of mentors supporting highly at-risk youths through community-based intervention and diversion initiatives. Using the funds from the Touchstone Foundation, the program will seek to enhance the effectiveness of mentoring services available to at-risk youths within Bench Mark Program’s open gym, where both individual and group services are available. An estimated 47 youths will receive mentoring.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region’s evidence-based program creates and supports one -
to-one mentoring relationships. The new funds will support the organization’s High School Bigs Program for elementary and middle school students in need of a special mentoring friendship; the students have demonstrated the need for enhanced social skills or feel isolated from their peers. An estimated 100 youths will receive mentoring.
CASA provides a court-appointed volunteer advocate to every child who is abused and neglected to ensure children have a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. The organization’s Older Youth Mentorship Project will provide advocates with mentorship training so they can assist older youths in becoming self-sufficient, indepen -
dent adults. The program will seek to bridge the barriers to success and connectivity to the community. An estimated 275 youths will receive mentorship support.
In total, the three organizations estimate they will serve 422 Lancaster

LancasterHistory names Fellows
LancasterHistory recognized three individuals as Fellows of the Lancaster County Historical Society at LancasterHistory’s annual dinner, held on June 13 at Excelsior Lancaster. Tom Ryan, LancasterHistory’s president and CEO, celebrated John H. Brubaker III, Darlene A. Colón, and Dr. Leroy T. Hopkins Jr., awarding each a bronze medal and naming them as Fellows.
According to LancasterHistory’s institutional records, the Fellows of the Lancaster County Historical Society program was created in 1992 by incoming historical society president Hopkins. The designation recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the community’s understanding of Lancaster County’s history over an extended period of scholarly activity or who have had a significant impact on the vitality of LancasterHistory over an extended period of service.
The first recipients of the award were President James Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens, honored posthumously, and John W.W. Loose, the then outgoing president of the historical society. Since 1992, this honor has been conferred on 17 individuals over 22 years.
Brubaker is deeply connected to Lancaster’s history, having spent more than four decades as an investigative reporter and the author of the “Scribbler” column. He has written seven books, including “Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake” and “Massacre of the Conestogas.” He is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Heritage magazine. Brubaker has spoken about his books and other historical subjects to more than 150 groups in
central Pennsylvania. Brubaker’s most recent book, “Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided and Reconciled,” was published in 2022. Brubaker and his wife, Christine, a longtime conservationist, live in Lancaster.
Colón is an educator known for her first-person, living history portrayal of Lydia Hamilton Smith, a Lancaster businesswoman and property owner who was also housekeeper to Thaddeus Stevens. Colón is active with multiple historical organizations, including the Christiana Historical Society, of which she is president, and the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania, which she co-founded and has led as president. Colón’s third-great-grandfather Ezekiel Thompson participated in the Christiana Resistance on Sept. 11, 1851.
Hopkins is a prolific Lancaster County researcher and historian on black history and the history of African Americans and Germans in Lancaster.
Hopkins received a bachelor’s degree in German and Russian from Millersville State College in 1966 and a doctorate in Germanic languages and literature from Harvard University in 1974. He served as the associate director for program and planning and then as acting executive director of the Urban League of Lancaster County from 1976 to 1979. Hopkins has served on the boards of numerous nonprofits, including the Library System of Lancaster County, the Southeast Health Center, and the Black History Advisory Committee of the
Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). He is a longtime member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lancaster, home of the Leroy T. To register, complete the form at www.lower dauphinalumni.org.
The LDAA was founded
in 1989 and is an independent organization that is not funded by the school district. The Promise Players will hold auditions for the group’s fall performance, “Baggage Claim,” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m.
“Baggage Claim” tells the story of the D’Baquel family’s vacation, where things are anything but relaxing. The lodge is full of animated goofballs, and the bellhop keeps tossing their luggage into the canyon. A comedic beginning turns into a darker reality as audiences see the family’s inner conflicts. Roles are available for five men, five women, and additional flex roles. To schedule an audition or for more information, contact director Dorothy Smith at musicdit dot@hotmail.com and note “Promise Players Auditions” in the subject line. Performances will be held from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 7 to 10, and from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 14 to 17.
