Come shopping at God’s Clothing Closet

Talk about a walk-in closet.

When Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual clothing giveaway, the selection will fill the gym at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

God’s Clothing Closet, featuring free clothing, footwear and accessories for people of all ages, will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24. Friday’s event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. by appointment only. On Saturday, the giveaway will be open from 8 to 11 a.m., and no appointment is necessary. To make an appointment for Friday, call or text 717-201-7566.

“This is our 24th year of God’s Clothing Closet,” said Kris Gray, who is chairing the event with Barb Dunmire. “Our volunteers put in hundreds of hours sorting clothing and getting

everything ready.”

All clothing is inspected to be sure it’s clean and in good condition, she said. “We have clothing in all sizes, all seasons,” Gray noted. “This is some great ‘new to you’ clothing, and everybody’s welcome.”

At least half of the gym is filled with women’s clothing, with clothing for men and children sharing the other half, Gray said. “We get prom gowns. We’ve had wedding dresses, fancy dress clothes, maternity clothes, nursing scrubs,” Gray said. “The whole family can get something.”

A table of free devotional materials will be set up for shoppers to peruse, and food donations will be collected for the Manheim Central Food Pantry if shoppers wish to bring some. Food donations are not required to attend the event.

“Back to school is right around the corner, and there is

a need for something like this in the community,” Dunmire said. “Back-to-school shopping can be very expensive.”

Last year, the church served about 443 shoppers over the two-day event. Shoppers donated a box of food to the pantry as well as close to $200 in cash to purchase more Bibles.

It takes a lot of help to be able to provide God’s Clothing Closet for the community, Gray said. Last year, more than 50 volunteers donated more than 300 hours of their time from setup to cleanup. Nothing goes to waste with the giveaway, either. Leftovers are donated to Jubilee Ministries in Manheim.

Although it requires time and effort to host God’s Clothing Closet, it’s important to the members of Ruhl’s Church, who are always looking for ways to connect with the larger community. The giveaway provides an

Combining hands-on fun with environmental education

When it’s hot, hot, hot outside, there’s no better way to cool down than splashing in the creek. On Monday, Aug. 19, you can embrace the water’s chilliness while also learning about the environment at the Chiques Creek Stomp. The event will be held in Little Chiques Park,

229 Park Ave., Mount Joy, from 6 to 7 p.m.

“The creek stomp will provide the opportunity for participants to get in the stream and collect samples of the aquatic wildlife,” explained Tim Elder, treasurer of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which hosts the activity. “Representatives of the Lancaster County Conservation

North Star Initiative (NSI) is doubling down on its mission. The local nonprofit is adding to its resources and increasing its reach in the fight against human trafficking.

“I’ve had a desire for collaboration,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s executive director. “There’s too much work that needs to be done, and you can’t do it alone. We want to bring together skilled and passionate people. There’s so much chance of burnout from doing this restoration work. We

Recently, NSI absorbed Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved (F.R.E.E.), a Berks County-based nonprofit with similar goals, methods and beliefs, into its operations. It’s a move that will allow NSI to impact more survivors and achieve an even greater good.

opportunity to support people in need while also raising awareness of the church and bringing people into the building, who may then seek additional information on the church, its services and its outreach programs.

of need, it is especially impactful to see how the free items positively affect some of the shoppers, Gray said.

Program to focus on cover crops

Gray explained that the inspiration for the giveaway came from another service project of the church. For years, church members collected clothing to donate to a mission in Appalachia, but the expense of sending the clothing added up. When Gray started talking to local families that participated in a meal giveaway at the church, she realized the church could make an impact in its own community.

Although the giveaway is open to anyone regardless

“We feel really blessed to be able to do this event,” she explained. “There are so many people who are in need. So many stories come back to us from people saying how much this meant to them. People look you in the eye when they leave and say, ‘Thank you. This was a big help for us.’”

Clothing donations for God’s Clothing Closet will be accepted at the church beginning on Monday, Aug. 19. Donations may be left under the covered front porch at the church, and labeling the bag with the size and type of clothing is helpful.

The national award is the highest honor a staff member can receive from the organization and is presented annually to an employee who has made significant and lasting contributions throughout his or her Lung Association career.

Stewart currently serves as the national director of environmental health for advocacy and public policy at the American Lung Association and leads efforts on informing the public about air pollution, its health effects, its sources, and means of control. Since beginning his work with the American Lung Association in 1987, Stewart has grown professionally from his initial service in environmental and occupational health in the former one-county Lung Association affiliate in Lancaster County through posts at different levels to his current national position. Stewart is a voice for healthy air and its health effects for the Lung Association and has been instrumental in shaping the nationwide healthy air program.

are stronger together and more effective.”

“This shows that it’s possible for organizations to collaborate to make a difference in the movement,” added Clark. “This is not necessarily common in the nonprofit world. The movement is changing, and it’s a privilege to be on the front lines.”

After about a year of negotiations and red tape, NSI officially absorbed F.R.E.E. on July 1. In the summer of 2023, officials of F.R.E.E. approached NSI about a possible merger, and around the beginning of this year a formal agreement was reached.

“In terms of operations, it’s a merger. The legal term is acquisition,” said Clark. “I’m excited because this means we’re going to be serving more survivors more quickly. It makes the whole organization stronger. This work is complex and complicated. Any resources we have at our disposal are meant for the good of the movement. We want to make the entire movement more effective.”

NSI retained all 11 of F.R.E.E.’s former employees, a move that increased NSI’s staff to 30 members. In addition to its continuation of F.R.E.E.’s services in Berks County, NSI has now established a physical presence in Reading, partly through the continued operation of F.R.E.E.’s Refuge Home, a residential facility for human trafficking survivors focused on trauma healing, similar to NSI’s The Harbor in Lititz.

NSI now has the capability to house and care for a total of 14 human trafficking survivors at any one time, up to eight at The Harbor in Lititz and up to six at the Refuge Home in Reading.

“This is the next step for F.R.E.E.,” said Andrea McHenry, F.R.E.E.’s former executive director and

NSI’s new director of outreach and advocacy. “North Star has experience that will allow the Refuge Home to be the best it can be from the beginning, and I could not be more excited.”

“Over the next 90 days we will be very focused on training staff and analyzing policies so both teams can be effective,” said Clark.

“We’re not going to rush things, and if we need to take our time, we will. One of the next key pieces will be to invite the community to see what we’ve accomplished so far. We want better outcomes for survivors. It’s what everyone wants. That’s the whole point.”

NSI is one of at least four Lancaster County organizations currently battling human trafficking. Last year, NSI conducted more than 75 presentations to raise awareness about human trafficking in the community, and since its founding in 2010, the Lititz nonprofit has provided care for more than 80 survivors.

“I’d say this is unexpected, but desirable and not unimaginable,” said Clark of the F.R.E.E. merger. “The areas that nonprofits struggle in are executive leadership, developing boards and securing volunteers. We have so many resources and such a competent staff that organizations are trying to replicate it.”

District will be on hand to identify what is collected and help explain how the types of aquatic life living in the stream provides an indication of the health of the stream.”

While the creek stomp is fun for the whole family, it serves a bigger role than just entertainment, Elder said. “The purpose of the event is to educate people on the importance of keeping our streams clean to protect wildlife in the stream,” he shared.

The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance is a volunteer-run organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area, almost all of which is in Lancaster County. Beginning in Lebanon County, the Chiques Creek flows

31 miles to its confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Six townships - East Hempfield, Mount Joy, Penn, Rapho, West Cornwall and West Hempfield - as well as two boroughs - Manheim and Mount Joy - have areas contained within the watershed. In addition to the creek stomp, the organization holds other community events and works with a variety of local organizations to promote environmental initiatives.

Meetings are held at the Penn Township municipal building, 97 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.

There is no charge for the creek stomp, and no reservations are required. Participants should wear old shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting wet and dirty.

LancasterHistory digitizes scrapbooks

In June, LancasterHistory completed a large digitization project of four historic scrapbooks and 850 individual historic documents, creating a total of 3,565 digital scans, which are now accessible to the public. The funding for the project came from a Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) Historic Archives & Records Care (HARC) grant of $5,000 that LancasterHistory received in 2021. The project focused on the digitization of four of the most significant and frequently requested scrapbooks in the LancasterHistory Archival Collections: “The George Steinman Album and Papers,” “The Marietta Scrapbook,” and two scrapbooks kept by Francis X. Reuss of Columbia.

Scrapbooks provide a unique record of individuals, families, organizations, and associations that may not be included in formal archival collections. Scrapbooks may include handwritten

or typed personal letters or notes and other ephemera and memorabilia chronicling daily life. However, materials used to save items in scrapbooks are often detrimental to the long-term preservation of the objects, including poor-quality paper and harmful tapes and adhesives that can become brittle or yellow over time or degrade the objects saved in the scrapbooks. Because of the fragile conditions of the aforementioned scrapbooks, access to them has been restricted for more than a decade.

“The George Steinman Album and Papers” contains documents that represent

Chad Snyder appointed to state board of funeral directors

As a third-generation funeral director, Chad Snyder has a unique perspective of the profession. In 1947, Chad’s grandfather, Charles F. Snyder, opened a funeral home in downtown Lancaster, and the business grew to offer locations in Millersville, Willow Street, Lititz and other parts of the county. Chad watched his father, Chip Snyder, run the business after Charles retired, and Chad became the director in 2018. Chad was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Directors earlier this year, and he said he plans to use his experience to bridge the gap between funeral directors and state legislators to benefit Lancaster and communities throughout the state.

Since joining the state board of funeral directors, Chad has taken monthly trips to the capitol to meet with other funeral directors and government officials during public sessions. The meetings incorporate discussions on various issues that impact the funeral industry, such as the evaluation of funeral directors’ licenses and

newly proposed legislation that could have cascading effects on funeral services across Pennsylvania. At 42 years old, Chad is the youngest member of the board, and he said he hopes to offer his fresh perspective of the industry to the board’s discussions.

“I’m looked at as the next generation of directors and a new set of eyes,” Chad said. “My desire is to be a spokesperson for great funeral service and to advocate for high standards,

ethics and values. I’m very honored and humbled to be a representative for funeral services across the state.”

In addition to being the youngest member, Chad is the only member of the state board of funeral directors to operate multiple funeral homes. Chad helped design Charles F. Snyder’s Willow Street location, and he continues to work with his father to run the business. “My dad is still very involved, which I’m

He is the Lung Association’s voice for its signature “State of the Air” report, released every April since 2000. The report draws public attention to air pollution, control challenges, and successes across the country.

As an advocate for healthy air, Stewart regularly represents the Lung Association with comments and testimony before federal, state, regional, and local agencies engaged in public policy on

clean indoor and outdoor air and climate change. He has submitted formal comments or testimony on topics such as increasing protective National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter and ozone, updating greenhouse gas emission standards for light-duty vehicles, and limiting methane from the oil and gas industry. His expertise and advocacy efforts span a broad range of topics from indoor radon, outdoor wood boilers, antiidling measures, and school indoor air quality in Pennsylvania to national energy policy and improving the

public’s right to know about environmental and public health threats.

Stewart joined the Lung Association at the time when radon was first recognized as an environmental hazard in people’s homes - a discovery that was made in eastern Pennsylvania; additionally, radon was soon shown to be found in his hometown of Lancaster. Stewart was an early proponent for increasing radon awareness, testing, and mitigation in homes and schools and has been instrumental in helping to reduce the public health threat of radioactive radon gas. He has been an integral part of the multi-agency team that developed the U.S. National Radon Action Plan and serves on the Lung Association’s staff team overseeing it. For decades, he has managed statewide grant-funded programs to reduce indoor radon. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Indoor Environments Association, the AARST Consortium on National Radon Standards’ Executive Stakeholder Committee, and Standing Committees for Radon Measurement and New Construction.

to George Washington, Lancaster’s Atlee family, and Gen. Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Resistance in 1851 and to buildings in early Lancaster, including the old jail, the British prison, and Postlethwaite’s Tavern. Also included in the collection are currency printed by Benjamin Franklin in 1764 and Confederate States currency and bonds.

“The Marietta Scrapbook” contains historical information about the towns of Marietta and Columbia and the rest of Lancaster County. The pages provide information on local history, including the topics of education, population, crime, taxes, elections, and occupations. The book also includes articles on the Pennsylvania Germans, personal histories, crime, and genealogical information.

The two scrapbooks from Reuss are resources about many aspects of life in Columbia. Both books focus on residents of the borough and the history of Columbia and Chiques Park. Both scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, handwritten correspondence, programs, photographs, and handwritten notes in the margins. Born in Columbia in 1847, Reuss was a founding member of

the Society of Old Columbia Residents, an organization of former Columbia residents living in Philadelphia. Reuss’ scrapbooks are often requested by those researching the history of Columbia.

The scrapbooks were digitized by Backstage Library Works in Bethlehem, Pa. Backstage Library Works previously digitized historic materials for LancasterHistory, including the James Buchanan Online Presidential Library and the Thaddeus Stevens & Black History Collections, which were also funded through PHMC HARC grants in 2018 and 2020, respectively. After receiving the final, high-resolution, and archival images and PDFs, LancasterHistory staff members and volunteers reviewed each object, created database records, and cataloged each item. In particular, LancasterHistory spent more than 150 hours re-cataloging previous items related to each newly digitized scrapbook, updating legacy descriptions that were inaccurate or incomplete, and making items more accessible to researchers.

The digital scans of the scrapbooks are available to view for free at https:// collections.lancaster history.org.

Railroad Museum unveils garden project to offer a new perspective

Railroads have shaped American history in many ways, from the swift westward expansion of the United States to the cascading impact on the formation of small towns and massive cities along railways. Although the 21st century boasts advanced technology once thought the realm of science fiction, the locomotive is anything but an antique, and it continues to play a vital role in the world of transportation. Railroads’ impact on the world as we know it may be observed in nearly every town, affecting qualities of modern life as minute as the vegetables we eat.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, recently completed a project to install a garden of heirloom vegetables in its front lawn. At first glance, the garden plot has no obvious connection to the colossal train cars that litter

the museum’s property, but museum educators Juliette O’Connor and Jesse Shetrom said plants and trains are intertwined in unique ways. Prior to the implementation of railroads as the primary method of transporting perishable goods, many regions grew produce that was unique to the area. After refrigerated train cars made it possible to export food to other states without it spoiling, many vegetables became standardized, which allows someone in Arkansas to enjoy the same produce as someone in Pennsylvania. One of O’Connor and Shetrom’s goals was to highlight local heirloom vegetables that fell out of favor, and the garden contains regional varieties such as blue pod peas, scarlet runner beans, black Brandywine tomatoes, Weaver’s stuffing peppers and patty pan squash. The two educators acquired heirloom seeds from the Landis Valley Village and

Visitors may see the new garden in the front lawn of the museum as they walk along the path to the entrance.
The new garden features heirloom vegetables including tomatoes, peppers and squash.

Farm Museum to plant in the garden.

In addition to highlighting heirloom vegetables, the Railroad Museum plans to use the new garden as a tool to continuously expand its educational programs in the future. As the museum approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, O’Connor and Shetrom are using the garden as a central piece in several new programs that will offer new perspectives on the history of railroads and interactive environmental education to visitors and local school districts. The garden will be dedicated on Earth Day next April to launch the museum’s event schedule for its 50th anniversary.

“The garden is an opportunity to revamp the museum’s outside space,” Shetrom said. “(O’Connor and I) are avid gardeners at home, and we were looking forward to doing something a bit different.” Shetrom added that he and O’Connor hope to expand the garden to more areas of the property, which will include native plants and flowers to attract pollinators.

The implementation of the garden aligns with the restructuring of Pennsylvania’s new educational standards to place a focus on environmental literacy. The garden will allow the Railroad Museum to maximize its vacant outdoor plots by making the property more sustainable, and it plans to expand its partnerships to conservation groups, gardeners and state agencies in addition to local schools.
