Koffee Konnect brings people together
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When she moved to Lititz a few years ago, Ann Marie Edwards yearned to make connections.
“I wanted to find my people,” she said. “I wanted to meet people in person.”
Edwards had started a successful book club, and once she moved to Lancaster County from Montgomery County, she became the moderator for a Lititz community gifting Facebook page. Through those connections, she learned of a coffee klatch meeting in Parkesburg, so she reached
out to the group’s founder, Kathi Rendall, about starting a local coffee meetup.
“I’m a connector,” Edwards said simply. “It’s easy for me to talk to people and bring people together.”
Koffee Konnect Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata met for the first time earlier this month at New Holland Coffee Co. in Lititz.
“Eight people showed up, including myself,” Edwards said, noting she was pleased with the turnout. “People want to connect with other people, face-to-face, in person.”
Edwards envisions Koffee
Konnect as being an organic experience, with the group meeting at various places throughout the Lititz, Manheim and Ephrata areas on days and at times that suit various schedules.
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced with this has been finding a time that works for everyone,” she said. “So, I don’t want to have a set time and day. The idea is to just get people together to hang out or spend time together when they can.” Edwards will propose a meeting date, time and place through the Facebook group page, and others are invited to do the same.

As a nurse practitioner in the cancer unit of a local hospital, Bainbridge resident Kimberly Dodson saw firsthand how the disease affected families beyond their health.
“As I took care of patients, they would say things like, ‘I can’t afford my chemo. I have to decide, do I take my chemo or do I pay for food for my kids?’
They had to made decisions that they should not have to make,” Dodson recalled.
Inspired to help, Dodson formed the Teal Blanket Fund, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that raises money to help women with gynecological cancer.
The nonprofit formed in March of 2020 after Dodson and other volunteers organized a bingo in 2019 to raise money

Kids love to discover. Kids love to be independent. Kids love to think.
Kids love Sky Bridge.
The High Foundation Sky Bridge, designed and fabricated by Luckey Climbers, is the Lancaster Science Factory’s latest hands-on exhibit for young learners. It represents the best kind of ingenuity, the kind that inspires others to be creative.
“More than learning, it’s about inspiring children,” said Amanda Bakay, the Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “When they see it and get inside of it, they start to realize they could create something like this one day. It sparks an idea like, ‘What did someone have to do to think this thing up?’”
Part jungle gym, part science project, part gateway to higher learning, Sky Bridge opened to
for patients. The event was so well-received that the group decided to create a formal organization and host regular fundraisers.
The nonprofit’s name comes from the color associated with fighting ovarian cancer, teal, and the goal of the organization.
“One of our patients said, ‘When we have to get chemo, a lot of us bring blankets or we are provided with nice, warm blankets,’” Dodson said.
Koffee Konnect
“A blanket wraps around the patient to make them feel comfortable, safe and secure. That’s what we’re trying to do with this organization.”
The Teal Blanket Fund hosts a bingo event each fall and a golf tournament each spring. The organization’s fourth annual golf tournament raised more than $10,000 in June.
Bingo will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Londonderry Fire Company, 2655 Foxianna Road, Middletown. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will begin at 2 p.m.
Patients interested in receiving Teal Blanket support fill out a brief application. The organization will provide a portion of the payment toward bills as well as Weis grocery gift cards.
Dodson noted that the Teal Blanket Fund has grown from a small organization helping patients in Cumberland County to serving women in 10 counties throughout central Pennsylvania.
Gynecological cancers affect women of all ages. According to the American Cancer Society, 66,200 new cases of uterine cancer were diagnosed in 2023, with an estimated 13,030 deaths from the disease. The National Cancer Institute estimates 20,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States annually, with close to 14,000 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed each year.
Now working at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, Dodson continues to advocate for women affected by gynecological cancer.
“Women are having to make decisions like, ‘Can I pay for the gas I need to drive to radiation sessions, or do I feed my family?’ and no one should be in that position,” she said. “These women need our love and support.”
The Teal Blanket Fund is always seeking donations as well as volunteers to assist at events and sponsors for the golf tournament. For more information, email Dodson at jldkad119@ aol.com or search for “The Teal Blanket Fund” on Facebook.
At a meetup, Edwards wears a name tag so people can identify her, and then she encourages participants to introduce themselves. Beyond that, it’s an unstructured time to get to know new people.
Rendall recently commented on Edwards’ group page for Koffee Konnect, and her words resonated with Edwards.
“She said, ‘It is a revolution of human kindness, and it can’t be stopped,’” Edwards shared. “There is so much value in human connection. A lot of us have friends on social media, but we don’t feel a connection just chatting online with them. It’s not enough. We’re still lonely. This is an opportunity to establish real connections.”
Edwards noted that response to her page has been positive, with multiple comments from people who are interested in participating in the group. She hopes people will
take that first step and come to a meetup, noting that the group is open to men and women of all ages.
“Many of us wonder, ‘How are people supposed to meet each other?’” Edwards said. “This is an easy way. You just have to have the willingness to say you’re lonely. The risk is minimal. You just have to put yourself out there. You don’t have to have a big personality. You just have to be bold enough to walk in, look for the crazy lady wearing a name tag and when you find me, you’ll feel welcome. You’ll feel like you’ve found a friend.”
Edwards has a meetup of Koffee Konnect planned for 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, at Fox Meadows Creamery, 2475 W. Main St., Ephrata. For more information on the group, including additional meetup dates, search for “Koffee Konnect Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata” on Facebook.

rave reviews at Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, in April of 2023. The $600,000 project was fabricated by construction artist and designer Spencer Luckey in his New England shop and then assembled at the Lancaster Science Factory over a three-week span.
“Sometimes kids like to see how quickly they can get to the top,” said Bakay. “It kind of looks like a giant ant farm when it’s filled with children. Sometimes kids will climb to the highest point and hang out. It’s almost like a cool clubhouse.”
When visitors to Lancaster Science Factory round the corner from the main entrance, they are confronted with Sky Bridge, which is attached to beams on the high ceiling of the former manufacturing plant. But the massive structure does not make contact with the ground.
“We’ve always wanted to use our horizontal space, to have a bridge span over our main exhibit hall,” said Bakay. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, just because you can climb in it. It’s so accessible, and having a bird’s-eye view of the exhibit hall is so cool.”
Framed by metal and held together by thick wire netting, Sky Bridge is a series of 35 wooden panels strategically spaced throughout the structure. Sky Bridge both stands out and fits right in with the Lancaster Science Factory’s 75 other exhibits.
“Everything we do is very hands-on and interactive,” said Bakay. “Everything we have requires you to do something and try something in a different way. Sky Bridge is like our other exhibits because it’s immersive, but there’s no beginning, middle or end. We also really don’t have anything else you can get inside and climb on.”
During 2023, nearly 71,000 individuals visited the Lancaster Science Factory, about 11,000 more than officials had projected. When those officials searched for reasons for the increase, they looked to Sky Bridge.
“It’s made a huge impact on our visitation,” said Bakay. “(The increase) was all, or in part, because of Sky Bridge. It gave us something to talk about.”
Partly through the funding of a $1 million capital campaign, the Lancaster Science Factory, which boasts 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, opened in 2008.

This year’s keynote speaker is Matt Dorgan, founder and chief executive officer of Building Bridges for Brianna. Dorgan created the organization after the loss of his 15-year-old daughter to suicide in 2020. Building Bridges for Brianna, which is based in York, seeks to prevent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury throughout local communities and to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in various breakout sessions during the conference, and each session will offer information on a specific topic. The sessions will feature discussions on how to use
mindfulness to improve student executive functioning, the latest research on suicide prevention and various other mental health-related subjects.
In addition to the keynote address and breakout sessions, the conference will feature Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training. QPR functions as the mental health equivalent of CPR, and it serves as a tool to help identify when someone may be struggling with mental health or suicidal thoughts.
“Coming to this event will equip people with a lot of information, and it’s a great opportunity for people who want to become more involved with suicide prevention efforts,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. “Like our program manager Dave Krahling says, everyone is on the front lines of suicide prevention.”
The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition has hosted the annual conference for several years, and the schedule has been modified this year to feature more breakout sessions and information about suicide prevention strategies. “Our main goal is to bring stakeholders, educators, consumers and other community members together to gain
skills and share the goal of preventing suicides,” McDevitt said.
MHA of Lancaster County has several initiatives that aim to decrease suicide rates in the area, including an upcoming campaign to raise
awareness of gun safety. The organization also has several programs slated for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month. For more information, visit https://mhalan caster.org.

PennDOT seeks grant applications
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is accepting applications for grants through its Rail Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) and Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP). RTAP is a capital budget grant program funded with bonds, and RFAP is funded through the Multimodal Fund created by Act 89 of 2013. Both programs provide financial assistance for investment in rail freight infrastructure, with the intent of preserving essential rail freight service and stimulating economic growth through new or expanded rail freight service.
In the 2023 grant period, the Shapiro Administration awarded $42.5 million for 25 rail freight projects supporting more than 300 jobs statewide.
Eligible organizations may apply to either program at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us/ login.aspx through 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. For more information, visit www .penndot.pa.gov and select “Rail Freight & Ports” under “Doing Business” and then click “Policies.” Application questions may be directed to Harrison Warren at hwarren@pa.gov or 717736-7150 or Steve Panko at¬†stepanko@pa.gov or 717-787-1202.
