Manheim Central grad earns Four Diamonds award

Throughout her high school career and even before that, Payton Shoenfelt had a passion for Mini-THON, an initiative that raises money for Four Diamonds to fight childhood cancer.

The recent Manheim Central High School graduate was recognized for her dedication at the Four Diamonds Mini-THON Leadership Summit held in Hershey in early August. She won an award from the Four Diamonds organization for honesty, one of the four pillars of the program. The Four Diamonds are courage, wisdom, honesty and strength.

purpose, knowing their “why” for participating in Mini-THON and sharing their intentions with transparency.

“It was definitely a surreal moment,” Payton said of hearing her name called at the summit.

“It felt like all of my hard work from the last five years was being recognized. Looking out and seeing all of the friends I have made in these past few years cheering me on was an amazing feeling.”

“Seeing the impact that Manheim Central and all other Mini-THONs make on these children’s lives is incredible.”

“I was aware that I was nominated for an award, but it was a surprise hearing what award I ended up receiving,” Payton said, noting that her MiniTHON adviser, Rebecca Stout, nominated her for the award.

“There were a lot of amazing leaders up for these awards, so it was definitely an honor to be selected.”

Stout nominated Payton for the award that recognizes students who act with integrity and

In Manheim Central’s Mini-THON program, Payton has held the titles of fundraising chair, junior overall chair and senior overall chair. She was also involved in the statewide MiniTHON Leadership Council for the past two years.

“Mini-THON is so important to me for so many reasons,” she shared. “Helping those who are fighting pediatric cancer makes me feel like I am making a difference in these families’ lives.

Although it is not nearly enough, seeing the impact that Manheim Central and all other MiniTHONs make on these children’s lives is incredible.”

She added that Mini-THON was an important outlet for her

throughout high school. “I had a lot of challenges to overcome throughout the last four years, but without fail, Mini-THON was always there reminding me why I should keep going,” she said. “Despite challenges within the school to keep the Mini-THON program alive, we worked tirelessly for the next generation of

students to enjoy this program as much as I did.”

Mini-THON is an opportunity for students in kindergarten through 12th grade to experience philanthropy and support Four Diamonds. Mini-THON programs are modeled after the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon - or THON - a 46-hour

The Mini-THON Leadership Summit is an all-day event where Mini-THON leaders from across the state travel to network, learn and connect, Payton said. “The day is full of touching stories from families affected by pediatric cancer, learning about how to make

our Mini-THON programs better and celebrating the impact we make,” she explained. “Normally, MiniTHON advisers and their top student leaders attend this event.”

At the summit, Payton received a glass engraved trophy, a 5-pound chocolate bar and a $500 donation in her name toward Manheim Central’s Mini-THON program for this year.

Payton will attend Towson University this fall, and she plans to continue her dedication to the organization that played such a big part in her high school years.

“I will be majoring in mass communication in hopes that one day I can work for a nonprofit organization like Four Diamonds,” she said.

The 36th Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1.

This highly experimental treatment for Whitehead’s leukemia saved her life, and with the help of the foundation, it has received FDA approval and is now used around the world to help save the lives of both children and adults. The foundation continues to fund new and emerging advanced therapies in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Whitehead just finished her first year at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and she continues to attend medical conferences to share her story and inspire others. Her story is told in the documentary “Of Medicine and Miracles” by Academy Award-winning director Ross Kauffman, and she is featured in the new IMAX documentary “Superhuman Body,” narrated by Matthew McConaughey.

donated items from local businesses and individuals, experiences and gift cards to local attractions and retail stores, as well as passes to events and local entertainment hot spots, said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope. “Also, part of the fundraiser (will include) catered meals that attendees will be able to bid on which are offered in homes of those with a personal connection to Mt. Hope as well as homemade pies, cakes and breads,” she commented.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH

The banquet provides much-needed funding for the retirement community, Wilson said. “The mission of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,” she stated. “Mt. Hope continues to be an inviting and welcoming place for everyone who needs our services. We continue strong in our founding mission to provide affordable, quality care in an environment based on Christ’s model of care for ‘the least of these,’ regardless of someone’s resources or ever-changing financial and personal circumstances.”

This will be Mt. Hope’s third annual banquet fundraiser, she said, adding, “It’s our largest giving opportunity for the community to support our work. We will strive to exceed our goal of $55,000, which is what

was so generously shared last year.”

People attending the banquet will have the opportunity to hear about everything Mt. Hope has accomplished over the past few years. “We will share the most recent updates and news about our endeavor to expand with building two new independent, single-floor living duplex cottages on our campus,” Wilson said. “Come ready to see architectural renderings of the newly anticipated cottages as well as where we are in the process with the expansion and the most up-to-date timeline and fundraising goals.”

According to Wilson, Mt. Hope provides more than $1 million in charitable care every year thanks in part to community support. “For the most part, Mt. Hope is supported by Medicaid state assistance,” she explained. “A large, ever-growing gap exists in what the state reimburses

long-term care facilities and the actual cost of nursing care, and about $200 helps bridge the gap for one resident for one day of nursing care. Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost of their care or benevolent care continues to be an increasing challenge.”

To reserve individual, couple or group seating at the banquet, individuals may contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org. There is an opportunity to be an event or table sponsor, reserving six seats per table for a set donation. The benefit meal is free; however, attendees at the banquet will have an opportunity to financially support the ongoing work of Mt. Hope, and there is a suggested donation to support the cost of the banquet. The deadline for banquet reservations is Saturday, Sept. 14.

Wednesday Night 6:30-8:00pm thru February 26, 2025
