Exploring faith through Bible2School
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Children who attend Doe Run and Baron elementary schools have the opportunity to hear the Word of God and build a relationship with Jesus through Bible2School. The program will kick off on Monday, Sept. 23.
Programs are held for Doe Run second-graders on Mondays, Doe Run third-graders and Baron second-graders on Tuesdays, Doe Run fourth-graders and Baron third-graders on Wednesdays and Baron fourth-graders on Thursdays. Classes meet at Manheim BIC Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. “Bible2School is a biblically based program. Bible2School provides free Bible classes to elementary children during their day,”
explained Marie Good, area coordinator. “The children are bused to the host site, where trained volunteers engage the children in lively worship, Bible stories, lessons, activities and prayer.”
Children enjoy their lunch during the program, which includes learning about Jesus and participating in skits, science experiments, crafts, games and other enrichment activities.
“My hope is that the children will hear a message of how much they are loved by God, that they walk away with their heads high, because they know they are seen, heard, important and grasp how valuable they are,” Good said. “And that they will come to have a relationship with a God who gives them peace, hope and joy.”
Bible2School began in 1979 in Manheim and has expanded to more than 30 schools throughout the county and the state. All programming is offered free of charge to students.
The program relies on volunteers, who feel called to share their faith with the students.
“We are always looking for volunteers,” Good said. “A good fit for volunteering would be a person who has a relationship with Jesus, attends church on a regular basis, loves working with children and has a flexible schedule.”

Singers invited to join ensembles
The Lebanon County Choral Society began its fall season with an open rehearsal on Sept. 9, and another is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16. Interested singers may practice with the group without a commitment to join.
The organization rehearses on Mondays at Hebron United Methodist Church, 451 E. Walnut St., Lebanon. Singers in ninth grade through adult age are invited to join the adult chorus, which meets from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m., and those in third through eighth grades are welcome in the youth chorus, which meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Artistic director Sean Hackett conducts the adult chorus, and Gabrielle Quandel Umholtz directs the youth chorus.
“I am very excited to get started with rehearsals,” said Hackett. “The centerpiece of the program this fall is works by Morten Lauridsen. This name may not be immediately recognizable to most people, but I think the audience will find his music familiar. His distinctive style has been a staple of many choral concerts for the past decades, and his music feels like it has existed forever - as if folk songs or anthems. And we’ll perform this concert in December at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church,
which is just a gorgeous space, both visually and acoustically.”

Founded in 1889, the Lebanon County Choral Society has a long tradition of bringing choral music to the Lebanon area. In the past decades, the group has expanded its mission to include a youth chorus, a free music day camp, and a young conductors’ program, all while seeking to continue and enhance the legacy of the adult chorus, the foundation of the orga -
nization. While centered in Lebanon County, the group includes singers from Robesonia, Mount Gretna, Palmyra, and other communities.

for all of the public libraries in the county, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, who is a member of the Council of Friends.
“This is a really wonderful event, because no matter where you live in Lancaster County, this event will support your public library,” she said. “Our proceeds are divided between all 17 libraries, the Bookmobile and the Be READy Rover, which focuses on early learning.”
Established in 2000, the Council of Friends of Public Libraries is composed of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. Over the years, the organization has raised more than $229,000 for local libraries.
Steinhauer said ticket sales for the author event have been brisk, but the space at Calvary Church can hold just over 2,000 people, so there is plenty of room for everyone.
“There’s a core group of Louise Penny fans who are
very loyal to her and love her books,” Steinhauer remarked. “They love that the books are an ongoing series, like a soap opera, with the main character showing up in every one. People get very attached to that character.” Penny has shared that her late husband, Michael, inspired the character of Armand Gamache, and Penny described Michael as “kindly, thoughtful, generous, a man of courage and integrity, who both loved and accepted love.”
Steinhauer said Penny’s books are also popular because they bring a cozy familiarity to readers, even though they are murder mysteries.
“When someone opens a Louise Penny book, they know what they’re going to get,” she said, noting that all of the books in the Gamache series are set in Three Pines. Penny’s books have won multiple honors, including nine Agatha Awards, given to mystery books, and they
have been translated into 31 languages.
Although fans of Penny’s books will be drawn to the author’s talk, Steinhauer noted that the Council of Friends’ events bring in a wide audience.
“We have some fans of the event itself, not just the author,” she said. “We have people who love being at an event where the main focus is authors and their writing style. They have the freedom to ask the author questions during a question-and-answer portion of the event. We open it up to the audience so people feel a real connection with the whole process of being an author. We also have people who feel closer to these authors who they have admired for years by coming into the library and checking out a book, and now they get to meet them in person.”
Tickets are required to attend the author event. Each ticket includes a hardbound copy of “The Grey Wolf.” For more information and to purchase tickets, visit https:// lancasterlibraries.org/ fall-author-event.

“Tuck Everlasting” to engage theater audiences
BY JEFF FALK
There are few forms of entertainment more engaging than live theater. And having it performed close to home makes it more convenient.
Sort of a modern touring theatrical troupe, Servant Stage brings the intriguing art of live theater to the viewing audience.
“TV, movies and live theater have these amazing stories,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Ser -
vant Stage. “But with live theater, you become part of the story; it draws you in. It only happens for that one moment in time. The next night is going to be a completely different performance.”
Servant Stage will present 12 performances of “Tuck Everlasting,” a Broadway musical adapted from Natalie Babbitt’s beloved novel, on select dates from Friday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 29, at Warwick High School’s Performing Arts Center,
301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The shows will be staged on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Admittance to each show will be on a pay-asyou-will basis. Tickets can be reserved in advance at www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.
“The main character, 11-year-old Winnie, sets out on an adventure and meets the magical, mysterious Tuck family in the woods,” said Bauer. “In the end, Winnie faces a deci -
sion to live a normal life or become immortal. It’s very entertaining and makes you think. It really emphasizes time, the importance of time and how we spend our time.”

“The whole village is part of the story,” said Bauer. “It’s got that classic feel with a large cast. (Cast members are) from all different backgrounds. Some are student performers. Some are emerging artists. Some have been performing their whole lives. Some are amateurs in the true sense and just love to do it.”
“Tuck Everlasting” is one of about 14 productions - totaling nearly 180 performances - that nonprofit Servant Stage will present this year at 50 venues across Lancaster County. It’s community theater brought to life in churches, parks, colleges and retire -
“The major change is the scope and the impact we are having,” said Bauer, who was an actor when he founded Servant Stage in 2012. “The scale we are doing now is different, but the heart and mission feels the same. It’s people who love theater and love the community. I think that’s what’s driving our success.”
“When people hear ‘community theater’ or ‘pay-as-you-will,’ I think it comes with certain negative expectations,” Bauer added. “But when people come, they’re blown away. The people involved are just so talented. You have to see it to believe it.”

UDS wraps up another successful golf outing
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, many students in Lancaster County were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day.
Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive
special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts.
Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers can be now found in nearly every school district in the county. UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year, and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a
good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”
This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and sponsors. In addition to the funds
Foundation to Host Student Symposium
The Touchstone Foundation will host its first-ever Student Symposium on Friday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at IU13, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The event’s purpose is to foster a community of support for students exploring careers in the mental health field - one of Touchstone Foundation’s main goals - and it is open to high school students, undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates. Attendees will learn about the career opportunities in the mental health field; connect with potential mentors; apply for jobs, internships, and placement opportunities; learn about the educational and licensure process; and gain insight about local community mental health resources.
In addition, panel discussions will offer students, recent graduates, and licensed mental health providers opportunities to speak to current students and recent graduates about their journey toward a mental health career. To sign up as a panelist, visit
www.touchstonefound.org.
The event will feature small group breakout sessions for students at every level of education to learn from students and professionals at the next level of the licensure journey. Breakout panelist sessions will focus on undergraduate students in mental health career majors, graduate students in mental health fields, recent graduates, licensed mental health providers, specific modalities of treatment, and serving specific populations.
The Student Symposium will also feature table displays, and this opportunity is open to community partners, organizations, agencies, colleges and universities, and local mental health providers. Those with table displays may recruit students for enrollment, jobs or internships, advertising programs, or sharing resources.‚ÄØ‚ÄØ
