VFW will hold POW/MIA recognition ceremony

Honoring their sacrifice and earnestly searching for those who are still missing is the theme of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The Manheim Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post 5956 and its Auxiliary will hold a ceremony to commemorate the day on Friday, Sept. 20. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the post, 149 S. Charlotte St., Manheim.

The ceremony will start with opening remarks from post commander Craig Fisher, followed by an opening prayer from the post chaplain and a proclamation from the mayor of Manheim. The Missing Man Table will be set, honoring prisoners of war

(POWs) and service members missing in action (MIA). Set for one and never occupied, the table will feature various symbols

representing the sacrifice and impact of these veterans.

“We will provide information on what is on the table as we’re setting it and what it stands for,” said Maria Apostolec, patriotic

instructor for the Manheim VFW Auxiliary.

The ceremony will also include a violinist who will play “Amazing Grace” and a bugler who will play taps.

Held annually on the third Friday in September since 1979, National POW/MIA Recognition Day features ceremonies at locations across the country, including military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities. The national ceremony is held at the Pentagon.

“A ceremony like this is important because it reminds us to never forget the people who are still missing and to honor those who were held captive,” Apostolec shared. “There are still families out there who don’t know what happened to

How did you spend your summer vacation? If you’re Josh Curry, a senior at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, you took a bike ride. A very long, very challenging bike ride.

Josh, who is the son of Anita Curry of Lititz, participated in the Adirondack Boys Summer Challenge Ride with Lifecycles, an organization that promotes character building and faith

development through bicycling. For a week in late July and early August, Josh rode more than 350 miles from Pennsylvania to Whiteface Mountain at the north end of the Adirondack Mountains.

“Some of the highlights were the beautiful scenery in upstate New York, the amazing food and great fellowship and discipleship,” he said.

Challenge Ride is an accurate name for the trip, he stated, adding, “Some of the

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others.

“Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since February of 2022.

“The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.”

“Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant. “We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build that camaraderie. That’s

Railroad Museum slates Garden Railways Tour

Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is

the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of the indoors.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a self-guided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will be available after a ticket is purchased to allow individuals to plan their route in advance. A volunteer from the museum will also be stationed at each home to share information about the museum’s programs and displays, and participating home -

owners will be present to run their trains and to answer questions.

“Some homeowners incorporate water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”

One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain, strong wind and

curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays are protected from.

In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour. Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”

A limited number of tickets are available to purchase in the gift shop of the Railroad Museum, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Tickets will also remain available online until the start of the event. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

The third annual competition will pit local barbecue masters against each other in brisket and pork butt categories, as well as a miscellaneous category, which will include chicken, ribs and prime rib. Attendees will be able to sample the entries from each competitor, and the church will provide sides, drinks and ice cream. In addition to the barbecue sampling and voting, there will be fun activities for children, including a bounce house and barrel train rides from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a candy cannon at 6 p.m. After judging has closed, the barbecue competition winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded at 6:30 p.m.

challenges were days with a lot of climbing.” The route included traveling along the Susquehanna River to its source at Cooperstown, N.Y., across the Erie Canal and into the mountains, finishing with a ride to the 4,867-foot summit of Whiteface Mountain.

Josh has been participating in Lifecycles for four years. He encourages other students to join the group, noting, “There is no other organization like it, and it will build your character.”

Character building is something volunteer Al Vega has noticed during his seven years with the organization. Like Josh, Al participated in a Challenge Ride this summer.

He drove a support vehicle for a girls’ team that rode from Manistee, Mich., to Mackinac Island. The ride covered 230 miles along the scenic coast of Lake Michigan and took place over a week in mid-August.

“The girls and leaders had an amazing experience,” Al shared. “The beautiful scenery stops along Lake Michigan and biking around Mackinac Island were highlights, with plenty of time for photos and exploring.”

Al first participated in a Challenge Ride with Lifecycles in 2018, when he rode along with his then-13-year-old son on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trail from McKeesport to Washington, D.C. In 2019, they rode from New Holland, where they live, to Boston. In 2020, they completed a loop from Gettysburg to Harpers Ferry to Columbia as a substitution for a planned ride that was postponed due to the pandemic. The postponed trip eventually happened in 2021, he said.

“I joined the 60-day TransAmerica ride from Oregon to Delaware,” he recalled of the 2021 trip. “In 2022, we rode from

Find a bargain at Fall Fest

As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.

“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”

entire apartment with everything you find here.”

New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.

Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food.

Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages.

Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.

“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said.

Engage in life like never before

Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.

what we’re striving for.”

Located at 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, the LVC serves United States military veterans through one-on-one counseling, group therapy, veteran events and outreach programs. A branch of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated with the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital, LVC also works with other outside organizations to resolve any difficulty a veteran might encounter.

“We are here to help veterans and their families readjust to life after their experience in the military,” said Grant. “It’s a lot of moving pieces. We want to help the community know who we are and what we do. We work with veterans for very specific treatment plans. We maintain relationships in the community to get them a higher echelon of care

if that’s necessary.” LVC serves between 80 and 100 veterans from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties each month.

According to a 2021 census, those counties are home to a total of 26,351 veterans.

“We have vets who have been in combat,” said Grant. “We have some vets who are out of active duty and just want to connect with the community. Some have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Some are just trying to successfully transition from the military and move on. It’s a wide swatch.”

“Once veterans know we exist, some will determine it’s not something they really need, and they’ll spread the word,” added Grant. “These benefits exist because people use them. If they weren’t used the funding would disappear. No one is taking a

Al said he was impressed with Lifecycles as soon as he met the organization’s director, Lee DeRemer.

“The camaraderie among the leaders and their enthusiasm for the program immediately drew me in,” Al said. “I attended the first ride of the season and saw the strong bonds between the boys and leaders and how they learned from one another. I kept coming back, and now my whole family participates.”

service away from someone else. Some vets don’t need the services. Some are good right now and can come back if they need to.”

One of 12 veterans’ centers in the state, LVC was established in 2010. As a whole, the veterans’ center program was established in 1979 and now operates 300 branches nationwide.

“We want to give veterans a place where they can come so they can live their best lives, not just for themselves but also for their families,” Grant said. “It’s

not just for them; it’s also for everyone in their circle. For the veteran community in general, it’s sometimes hard to come to the table and trust that systems are going to do what they say they are going to do. Where we could do a better job is pounding the streets, getting the word out and showing the veteran community they can trust us.”

In the county, rides leave from Marietta and Landisville. Since its inception, the program has served more than 350 teens who have ridden more than 368,000 miles.

“Lifecycles offers a Christ-centered outdoor adventure that fosters growth, character and leadership in teens through biking and teamwork,” Al said. “Teens learn essential life skillsfrom leadership and teamwork to money management and healthy living - all under the guidance of dedicated mentors who help them transition into adulthood with integrity and confidence.”

Lifecycles is open to any teens in Lancaster County. The program runs from April through October. For more information, visit www .lifecyclesteam.org.

Founded in 2014 by Lee and his wife, Marcie, Lifecycles has a mission to build young men and women of character through weeknight local rides throughout Lancaster County as well as Saturday rides and the weeklong Summer Challenge Rides. There is no charge for teens to participate in Lifecycles, and bikes and equipment are provided if needed.

More than 80,000 American veterans are missing, she added, and the search is ongoing to locate as many as possible. The efforts of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, which coordinates the Pentagon event, focus on veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and the Gulf War.

father was a veteran of World War II, and she has two brothers who served in Vietnam. She started her role as patriotic instructor in April. Her responsibilities in the position include instruction on proper flag display and treatment, educational programming at local schools and organizing events such as the POW/MIA ceremony.

She encourages everyone to come to the ceremony and extends an invitation to anyone who is eligible to join the VFW.

“Our club is aging, and we’re in need of younger, energetic people,” she said. “We want new ideas coming in, so we can accomplish everything we’d like to do for our veterans.”
