Manheim Central

Thursday this year

Staff members at The Junction Center in Manheim host events that reflect the center’s motto of “Christ. Community. Music.,” but they felt something was missing. So they created The Harvest Happening, a free event geared toward young adults.

“This event is an attempt to specifically reach young adults to provide a safe, fun atmosphere for fellowship,” explained Kayla Cornell, box office manager. “Our heart behind reaching young adults is a desire to use our facility to positively impact the next generation and create relationship opportunities.”

The Harvest Happening will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. It will feature a variety of ways for people to relax and have fun. “We will have food trucks, yard games, live music,

pumpkin painting, free cotton candy, a fun photo op and an outdoor movie to end the night with popcorn and soda provided by us,” Cornell said. “It’s going to be a great night.”

Local artist Matt Wheeler will provide live music, while Gourmet Julie’s Way and Hopeful Brews will serve food and beverages. Cotton candy

Before the weather turns cold, you have one more chance to get out and explore downtown Manheim during 1st Thursday. October’s 1st Thursday event will be held on Oct. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m., and it’s going to the dogs - but that’s a good thing, said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Leashed, well-behaved dogs are invited out on Oct. 3 for Doggie Night,” she shared. “Eileen’s Stitchery, set up inside Horst Arts at 17 N. Main St., will be offering dog bandanas with your pet’s name embroidered on it for (a charge). The first 20 will be free, compliments of the Manheim Area Chamber of

Commerce! Other businesses and street vendors will have treats for your pups throughout the evening.”

Adriano Sica, who Schmid describes as “an energetic singer and piano player,” will perform in the gazebo in the square from 5 to 7 p.m. Spud Muffin, Walk-O Taco and Glory Be Farm will be set up on the square for dinner and snacks. Additional events will include a Blessing of the Animals by pastor Bill Long from St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 50 N. Main St., and Historically Haunting Walking Tours offered for free from the Manheim Historical Society at the Fasig House, 30 E. High St.

As 1st Thursday wraps up for the season, Schmid reflected on how the events that began in April were received this year.

“The success of 1st Thursdays is always weather dependent,” she said. “We’ve had some months where the rain and extremely hot temps kept people away, and we’ve had some months where the weather cooperated and Market Square was bustling. We brought in some new food trucks and tried to mix up the variety a bit more this year, which people seemed to appreciate. The live music is also always a hit.”

Looking ahead to next year, she noted that the Chamber plans to offer 1st Thursday again from April through October, and she encourages people to stay tuned for updates.

“1st Thursdays are made possible through our Stiegel Sponsors - AES Clean Technology, Blue Ridge Communications, Jonestown Bank & Trust and

Every individual, every organization has a story to tell.

Helping Other People Eternally (HOPE) International’s story is one of compassion and empowerment and the human spirit. It’s a story that continues to evolve, continues to change - one whose final chapters have yet to be written.

“I think some people do (know about HOPE International’s mission),” said Jeff Rutt, chief executive officer and founder of the organization. “I think more people need to know about the work God is doing through HOPE International. If we can share that with more people, hope can be restored in more lives. I’m always looking for ways to spread the word about the difference HOPE is making in the lives of families around the world. We need to be a voice for the voiceless.”

will be provided by The Little Cotton Cart from 5 to 7 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and jackets to enjoy the movie, and Cornell hopes for a large turnout.

“This event is completely free,” she said. “We want to encourage anyone who wants to come and have a fun night of games, music, food and fellowship to come to The Harvest Happening.

Once here, they can expect to have an incredible kickoff to the autumn season with other young adults seeking community.”

Cornell noted that in the weeks prior to the event, staff members handed out postcard invitations featuring the event’s logo.

“If someone comes to the event with one of the cards, we are using them as ‘tickets’ to spin a wheel and win a ticket to a concert by Junction Center Productions,” Cornell shared, noting that the winner may

only redeem the postcard for one ticket. “We will also be giving away food and coffee vouchers for Hopeful Brews, as well as Gourmet Julie’s Way, on WJTL the week before the event.” Listeners may tune in to WJTL at 90.3 FM.

Although The Harvest Happening is new, the sentiment behind the event is not, said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director for The Junction Center.

Headquartered at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International is a Christian organization focused on helping individuals and families in poverty around the world to become financially stable. HOPE International performs its work through small, low-interest loans; savings groups; financial education; microfinance services; housing programs; and agricultural initiatives.

“When HOPE International was started, I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” said Rutt. “If you go to start a global organization, you don’t start out as an old dairy-farmer-turnedbuilder. But God knew the steps. My vision at the beginning was to help a few poor families in Ukraine. It’s grown explosively, and I think we’re just getting started.”

That was 27 years ago, in 1997. Since then, HOPE International has provided financial assistance to more than 3 million people in more than 20 countries, such as Haiti, the Republic of the Congo, Thailand, Guatemala and Indonesia.

But the nonprofit is neither satisfied nor resting on its laurels.

“When we first started, we were looking for ways to provide hope spiritually and financially,” said Rutt. “We were just a fledgling 501(c)(3) at the time. We were trying to figure out how we can join hands with other organizations and work together.”

HOPE International’s work is funded through individual donors, fundraisers, churches, foundations and business donations. Since its inception, HOPE International has raised more than $275 million and lent more than $1.7 billion.

Between 2017 and 2023, 98% of the loans in the HOPE International network were repaid. “We want to continue to grow our programs and deepen our roots,” said Rutt. “There are more families to be served, thousands and thousands. There’s plenty of need out there. We want to restore dignity in families’ lives and use that platform to proclaim the Gospel. I think there’s so much potential. HOPE International is a partner; we’re not trying to provide the answers.”

Financial stability in a community can have far-reaching ripple effects. It can spur growth and

Maintaining older vehicles

New cars have been costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles.

Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt,

but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts.

During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Pop-

ular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

The importance of regular car washes

Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. There are a number of steps involved in keeping a car or truck in top form, and that includes regular car washes.

Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.

• Protect from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.

• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a well-maintained car can bring in as much as 20% more for above-average condition,

Four signs tires need to be replaced

Cars are a significant investment, which underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance. Maintenance is more than just tending to what’s under the hood. Tires also require drivers’ attention, as aging, damaged tires pose a safety risk and also compromise vehicle performance. Tires can be easily overlooked, but the following are four signs tires need to be replaced.

replacement.

according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.

• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.

• Improve fuel efficiency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel efficient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel efficiency.

• Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats, and interior components.

Car washes should be a routine part of vehicle maintenance. Professional car washes tend to be more eco-friendly than washing a car at home, so drivers are urged to investigate their service plans and features.

1. Worn tread: The automotive experts at AutoZone note that tread depth is the most prevalent indicator that a tire needs to be replaced. AutoZone notes that tread depth should always be at least 1/16 of an inch throughout the tire. Depth should be measured across the tread and around the circumference. If the tread is at or below 1/16 of an inch, the tire should be replaced.

2. Bulges, gouges, or cracks: Geico notes that a deflated tire bulges at the sides, and that can compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. AutoZone says bulges occur when air gets between the inner liner and outer rubber layers, which can happen after hitting a curb or driving over a sizable pothole. A gouge or cut that is deeper than the outer layer of the tire also necessitates

3. Poor grip: Drivers may be able to feel certain tire problems, including poor grip, while driving. In such instances, tires may feel as though they are slipping. The tire experts at Firestone note that low tread can reduce tire traction and cause wheels to slip, which may be more noticeable when accelerating from a stop or driving on wet roads. Drivers who feel their tires are slipping can test the tread and replace tires that are low.

4. Vibration: Vibration is another issue drivers may feel rather than see. Identifying the cause requires noting where the vibrations are felt. Geico notes that vibration or thumping that feels like it’s coming from under the seats may indicate the tires are not balanced. A suspension issue could be to blame if the steering wheel feels like it’s vibrating. Either feeling should be brought to the attention of a mechanic immediately. Tire issues affect vehicle performance and compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers, and fellow motorists. When vehicles are not performing at peak capacity, drivers should not overlook various tire issues as a potential cause of such troubles.

Maintenance mile markers

Modern automobiles are technological marvels. As advancements in automotive technology have made cars more reliable than ever, drivers may feel as though vehicle ownership also is more hands-off than ever before. Though it’s true that built-in diagnostic technology is designed to alert drivers to certain issues, it can still benefit motorists to recognize when certain issues may arise.

Cars and the people who drive them are different, so

mileage intervals are not always the best measuring stick for maintenance issues. However, the following rundown can serve as a guidebook for drivers who want to know what to expect at various mileage intervals.

• 30,000 miles: The experts at Auto Trader note that disposable engine air filters usually last between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. If it’s been about 30,000 miles since the engine air filter has been replaced,

Maintenance from pg 4

it would be a good time to replace this important part, which prevents components like dirt and debris from getting into the engine. This also might be a good time to replace the fuel filter, which prevents debris from clogging fuel injectors.

• 50,000 to 60,000 miles: It’s about this time that drivers may need to replace their vehicle batteries. Little-used vehicles may need a new battery much earlier, as lengthy periods of little or no use adversely affect the life expectancy of vehicle batteries. Brakes also may need to be replaced about this time, as the experts at AutoZone note that most drivers get between two and five years out of a set of brake pads. If that sounds like a significant range, it is, and that’s because driver behavior is a significant variable affecting the life of the pads. Drivers who brake hard will likely need to replace their brake pads with greater frequency than drivers who brake slowly.

• 50,000 to 90,000 miles: As noted, there is no uniform guideline governing

when vehicle components will need to be replaced. Hoses are a good example of that, as recommendations regarding when to replace hoses range from 50,000 to 90,000 miles. That’s a significant range, but drivers can be on the safe side and start discussing the status of their hoses with their mechanics around the 50,000-mile marker. It’s unlikely the hoses will make it all the way to 90,000 miles before they need to be replaced, but drivers can keep that mileage marker in mind and aim to replace the hoses before that point even if no issue has arisen. Timing belts also tend to fail between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, so this is another part to consider replacing as a vehicle reaches this point. These mileage markers are not set in stone and should only serve as a guideline for drivers who want to stay ahead of vehicle repairs. Drivers also are urged to discuss any additional changes that might be necessary with their mechanics during routine maintenance appointments.
