Going green at Hope Episcopal Church

Creation care is a core value of the Episcopal Church, said Bradley Mattson, priest of Hope Episcopal Church. The church is taking that mission to heart thanks to a $46,000 grant from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation. The grant, given and administered by Lancaster Clean Water Partners, will empower the church to collaborate with local conservation efforts, protect the local watershed and embrace better land stewardship practices along Shearers Creek, which is part of the 17-acre church property located at 2425 Mountain Road in Manheim.

The grant was spearheaded by church member Rob Gokey.

“At the time, I was head of outreach for the church, identifying

needs in the community and focusing funds toward the best opportunities. Nothing in my background ever said I was going to be involved in creation care,” recalled Gokey, whose experience includes food marketing and sales and a commercial linen business. “But I was always sort of a friendly ecologist. We recycle. We plant trees. We do things around our house to help the environment. It was definitely an interest of mine.”

Gokey soon realized the key to success involved working with experts in the field. He connected with Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake, an organization that works with congregations to help them with green initiatives.

While taking a boat tour in Maryland, Gokey had an aha moment.

“On the tour, they talked about watershed management and how it affected the Chesapeake Bay,” Gokey shared. “That’s what planted this idea at Hope Church. I wanted to get other people to get that same fire in their belly.”

Gokey began contacting local partners and completing his own research on watershed management.

The members of Hope Church were already putting their environmental mission into practice by planting pollinator gardens and re-meadowing areas of land, said Mattson. The grant will extend that practice.

“The grant is going to cover the design and implementation of a bioretention swale to help with clean water,” Mattson said, noting that the church found out it had received the grant in

It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants

to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim Square at 8:30 a.m.

“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the square all morning until the start of the

The local nonprofit is adding staff members, adding programs and bringing more individuals under its umbrella, all in an attempt to satisfy needs and perform greater good.

“Over our first 26 years, we created the organization, built programs and established ourselves,” said Risa Paskoff, who’s been Aaron’s Acres’ executive director from the start. “We’re now taking it to the next level. This is a major step for us. We want to present ourselves more professionally. This expansion is going to be on so many different levels. One of our dreams is to continue to be a family resource. Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

September. “It will help with retention issues. We’re on a hill, with Shearers Creek at the bottom of our property. Erosion is a problem, because whatever runs downhill here eventually ends up in the Chesapeake. We want to keep the water cleaner.”

The bioretention swale is just one phase of a Green Master Plan the church members hope to implement throughout the property.

“My original hope and vision was to have Hope Church be a beautifully well-stewarded place for people to host retreats,” Mattson said, noting that Sight & Sound Theatres has filmed part of a full-length movie on the property and plans to record a second one. “This is a way we can show we are trying to love our neighbors by loving the land, by being aware of the people downstream.”

Mattson said the goal is to finish the swale project by the spring, install signage so people can learn more about bioretention and then move on to other environmentally friendly projects such as installing a walking path and setting up prayer stations for spiritual practice.

He and Gokey both emphasize that the project’s success

relies on working with other organizations.

“I love it when a ministry and a community come together and do something together for the greater good,” Mattson said.

Gokey agreed, adding, “To me, it’s all about networking with people who know more than you do.”

Mattson noted that Hope Church, which is 175 years old, is small but mighty.

“Little churches like ours make up the bulk of faithful activity in this county,” he said. “If we can inspire a little church to think bigger than itself, think beyond the family that’s been sustaining it and move toward an identity that’s centered on abundance, we can make a world of difference. We want to be a point of inspiration and open up the mind to possibilities.”

race. The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”

The course is relatively flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. “We have a range of participants from (ages) 6 to 76,” Husser said. “We will have bananas, water and chocolate milk for all finishers. Plus, this year we will have cash prizes for the top three overall male and female runners as well as medals for various age groups.”

The first Santa Run began nine years ago, coordinated by Reenie Ober, who at that time was the executive director of the Manheim Downtown Development Group. “She organized the first Santa 5K, and then the Manheim Lions Club has been sponsoring it every year since then,” Husser said.

Whether people are participating or attending as spectators, the Santa Run will offer an entertaining experience, she said. “It is just a lot of fun to do something on a December morning and then to visit all the shops in town, have breakfast and just enjoy Manheim in general,”

Husser shared. “It is just a fun community event in Manheim, and it just gets you into the Christmas spirit. Just come out and feel the Christmas spirit.”

The cost of registration for the race will increase after Friday, Nov. 1. People age 15 and older who register before Friday, Nov. 15, may receive a Santa suit or a quarter-zip pullover, and youths age 14 and younger may receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat if registration is received before that date. Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, located at 48 Market Square, but will not include a Santa suit or sweatshirt. Seniors invited to SALT ministry

For seniors, options to make connections in the community can be limited. The members of Mount Joy Church of God want to change that. The church is launching a new ministry called SALT - Seniors Are Living Treasures - open to anyone age 60 or older. There is no cost to attend the program, which will meet at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Church member Tracy Miller said the time is split between organized activities and unstructured free time. “We will provide cards, games, puzzles, adult coloring, conversation, etc. Even our church library will be open for anyone who

wishes to check out a book,” she said. “We will also have different activities every week:¬†bingo, ice cream social, classic movies and popcorn, crafts and more.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loneliness and social isolation in older adults are public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and putting them at risk of serious medical conditions. A 2020 study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine shows that nearly one-fourth of adults age 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated. According to the CDC, social isolation can lead to a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29%

increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.

To combat those statistics locally, the members of Mount Joy Church of God hope SALT becomes a true community effort. Several leaders of local churches have joined the effort to promote the ministry.

“The senior population in Mount Joy needs a place where they can congregate, socialize, share miseries or health conditions, meet new friends and not be lonely,” said Nancy Shonk, who attends Florin Church of the Brethren.

Joining Shonk on the leadership is Renee Haney from Swatara Hill Church of the Brethren, who got involved because she understands the loneliness that seniors can struggle

navigate the journeys they have with individuals with disabilities.”

Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres supports and provides recreational programs for children and young adults with disabilities like autism, Down syndrome, epilepsy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy, as well as their families. Aaron’s Acres’ programs, some of which are seasonal in nature, emphasize socialization and communication skills.

Since its inception in 1998, Aaron’s Acres has focused on Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, York, Lebanon and Perry County individuals who are between the ages of 5 and 21 and have disabilities.

But Aaron’s Acres’ new programming, which will begin in November, will continue the nonprofits’ more recent efforts to reach individuals with disabilities who are up to age 40.

“There’s this huge need,” said Paskoff. “The need is created by people who are graduating from high school. We’re adding programs and a lot more ages, and we’re hoping to continue to add more programs. We are being true to who we are by continuing to meet the mission. We are responding.”

By adding more times and making programs more available to older individuals with disabilities, Aaron’s Acres is expanding its cooking, arts and community services programs. Aaron’s Acres is also looking at ways to expand its sports programming in an attempt to build on the momentum created by its sponsorship of the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League. The new programming

Workshop set for parents and teachers

The Janus School, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy, will host a workshop for teachers and parents on Monday, Oct. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The program will share tools and strategies to help support a child’s development of executive skills.

There is a fee, and Act 48 credits are available for educators. To register, visit https://thejanusschool .org/esworkshop/.

will allow Aaron’s Acres to serve another 25 individuals with disabilities between the ages of 21 and 40.

“In Lancaster County, a good number of people know about us,” said Paskoff, “but we definitely need to do better in other counties. One of our goals is to expand our footprint, so people know who we are and what we do.”

Aaron’s Acres, which is overseen by a board of directors, is also in the process of hiring a new full-time program coordinator and a new part-time staff member. Those hires will push Aaron’s

Acres’ number of employees to seven.

Aaron’s Acres maintains a 1-to-1 or a 1-to-2 staff-toclient ratio.

“The excitement comes from taking the next step,” said Paskoff. “We’re growing and responding to the need. We’re hearing from families, and we want to respond. (Parents and families) want to have the youth programs for younger children and programs for when (their children) graduate.”

with. “So many seniors are lonely and don’t know how to connect with others with similar interests,” Haney shared. “I’m hoping SALT will be a place where they can make meaningful connections with others in their age group.”

The idea for the ministry came from Mount Joy Church of God’s plans to mark its 200th anniversary in 2031. The church assembled a Vision 2031 team to look at challenges and opportunities in the community. The team noticed a lack of activities for seniors in Mount Joy. “We don’t have a location here in Mount Joy where seniors can just meet, have a cup of coffee, fellowship, play cards,” Miller said. ”I felt compelled to change that.”

While Shonk wants to provide opportunities for other seniors, the ministry is personal for her. “I am a senior, and even though I have a spouse, I am looking forward to being part of the leadership and helping make seniors feel like they are an appreciated member of the community,” she stated.

Ministry leader Debbie Cohn, also a senior citizen, is excited about bringing her peers together. “It is important to be with people who understand your challenges, while sharing new ideas, thoughts and experiences,” she said.

Mount Joy Church of

God senior pastor Richard Vaughn looks forward to what the ministry can do to help the community.

“Our goal is to be a key member of this community, whether it’s participating in different downtown community events like Winterfest or simply providing access to our facility bathrooms during the car show,” he remarked.

“This is an opportunity for our facility to be used by the greater community. Whether a senior attends our church, another church or doesn’t attend church at all, they will be welcomed to gather here with their peers and have a good time.”

Seniors who are interested in participating in SALT do not need to register. People may park on the street and enter the church off of Main Street or access the building without climbing steps through the East Henry Street entrance via a parking lot at the rear of the church.
