Manheim illustrator’s work featured in Amazon holiday catalog
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Laura Moyer may be an artist, but she’s also a storyteller, and now her work is in mailboxes across the country. Laura, who lives in Manheim, created the artwork that appears on the cover and throughout the Amazon Kids Gift Book, a national catalog mailed to customers earlier this month.
“I love being an illustrator when it makes others feel happy or if it helps people learn (and) makes learning fun.”
As Laura explained, the artwork was created specifically for the Amazon book, but it followed some preset guidelines.
“I worked collaboratively with a large team of people to create the characters - appearance, personality traits,” she said. “The set of characters has been used for the toy book every year for four or five years, and each year, they have a new illustrator create the characters in their style. So we were building on existing characters, but creating them in my own visual style on their newest story/adventure.”
The characters, which include forest friends such as a fox, a bear and an owl, appear throughout the book in a story and activities such as coloring pages, hide-and-seek
games and word searches. An “about the illustrator” profile of Laura appears on the last page of the 50-page toy catalog.
Laura was selected for the project last fall after her agency, Closer&Closer, secured her the work. She began working on the illustrations in January.
“It was a collaborative project between myself, a design studio called Hybrid Design based in San Francisco and the Amazon toy book team,” Laura said.
She worked on the project from January until July.
Laura grew up in Cedar Run, N.J., and graduated from Philadelphia University (now Thomas Jefferson University) with a degree in graphic design
communication in 2013. She was employed full time as a graphic designer in Harrisburg and then Lancaster, where she worked on a few illustration projects and hoped to pursue that type of work full time.
After her second child was born in 2017, Laura began freelance graphic design work and took online illustration classes.
“I really just made an Instagram page for my illustration work and would share whatever I was working on in my classes or for fun, and it took off from there,” she explained.
Laura said the two children she shares with her husband, JarrydBryce, age 9, and Lyla, age 7 - have enjoyed following the characters’

When Teen Central hosts its annual Light the Night event, the organization welcomes hundreds of people to enjoy food, fellowship and fun. This year’s festivities will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Teen Central,
“The event takes place during Manheim’s trick-or-treat hours, and the last few years we have had between 400 to 500 people pass through our parking lot,” said Janelle Heying, Teen Central executive director. “We would love to welcome everyone to this free community event. Whether

Dr. David Eichler loves being out on the water. He also loves sharing his knowledge of boating with students of all ages. Now the member of Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy can do both those things more often. Thanks to Eichler’s efforts, the church was awarded a Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) R3 grant in July. “R3” stands for recruitment, retention and reactivation. The grant awarded the church funds to
purchase seven canoes, a trailer, paddles and personal flotation devices (PFDs).
Eichler taught health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School for 35 years. He used canoes provided through PFBC grants and fundraising initiatives to teach and certify students in boat safety. When he retired in January of 2020, he hoped to keep instructing people, but he needed canoes and equipment to do so. When the school district held a public drawing for the canoes, kayaks

and trailers that Eichler had used, members of Glossbrenner Church submitted ballots, but they were not chosen. “Doc,” as he’s referred to by his students, wasn’t deterred. He applied for the PFBC grant this year and took students on maiden voyages of the canoes in September.
A group of Boy Scouts from Maytown Troop 53 took to the water at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm for the first trip. “The Scouts learned things like floating in their PFDs, how to retain body heat while in the water, the use of throw bags, safely capsizing their canoe, performing boatover-boat rescues and paddle strokes,” Eichler said.
Scout Logan Kean commented, “I liked it when we went in the canoe and flipped it over. I think overall it was a fun day here.”
Assistant Scoutmaster Tim Ford added, “The classroom instruction was
very interactive; even with the young boys it was very engaging. The on-water training was a lot of fun for the boys, and they did better than I expected!”
The second outing brought members of Glossbrenner Church out on Speedwell Forge Lake. “The goals for Glossbrenner Church members were to not intentionally capsize but to stay dry, learn some basic paddle strokes, properly don a life jacket or PFD, relax and have fun,” Eichler said of the group that included church members Wayne and Debra Kennedy, Vaughn and Debbie Nissley, Steve and Pat Spence and Jackie Roberts and Glossbrenner Church youth member Jordan York.
“It was great to be out and about with church friends,” said Debbie. “The canoes and accessories are fantastic, and we are so blessed to have them.”

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
Bonnie Messick will speak about “What Does Trust Look Like?” She will share how people can trust God to know what is best for them even when they can’t see His plan. Bonnie is a stay-athome mom to two girls. She is married to Bryan, and they live in Elizabethtown. She attends Chiques Church and enjoys golfing and traveling as well as crafting, sewing, decorat -
ing, cooking, and other activities that allow her to be creative.
During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

sized the easy-to-follow instruction they received as well as the opportunity to enjoy nature, including a blue heron that followed their route.
“I haven’t canoed for over 35 years and was looking forward to the outing,” said Roberts. “I wasn’t disappointed and want to definitely participate again.”
Eichler proclaimed that the Lord blessed his church with these canoes and related equipment through the graciousness of the R3 grant. “I’m privileged to have the ability to share my knowledge of canoe and
boat safety to the Glossbrenner Church family and to the Maytown Boy Scouts,” he said.
He’s also hoping people from other areas of Lancaster County will want to use the equipment and take advantage of Eichler’s instruction. “Glossbrenner Church extends the canoeing opportunity to others in the local communities,” he said. “If your group, church, business, Scout troop, school, etc., has interest in 2025 and beyond, contact Doc at Glossbrenner Church at 717-653-5683 and leave a message.”

people are looking for some safe family-friendly fun or are out trick-or-treating and want to swing by, we will be there with plenty of food and activities for all ages.”
Light the Night will be held rain or shine and will include stations such as popcorn, cotton candy, firepits with s’mores, a photo booth, games, candy and a food station that will be serving free hot dogs, hot chocolate and chips. New this year, hamburgers will also be served while supplies last.
“Tours of the inside of our building will also be available for people who are interested in learning more about our ministry and what all we do at Teen Central,” Heying said.
Teen Central is a nonprofit Christian organization that serves middle school and high school students in grades five through 12 within Manheim.
“We are open four days a week for our regular programming where we provide free snacks, activities, Bible study time, and a free meal is served daily,” Heying remarked. “We also hold monthly free events such as mini-golf nights, backyard bashes, Christ mas and other seasonal parties or outings to other local establishments. Our goal is to provide spiritual development and quality life experiences to the youth of our community, and we do that through a variety of ways.”
Light the Night annually to spread awareness of its mission and to provide a free community event.
“The purpose for this evening is to bring the light of Jesus to our neighbors by connecting with and serving those in our community. We love being able to use our space to bring the community together on a night where most people are already out and about and interacting with each other,” Heying said. “To see all the smiles being shared and fun being had during this event, it is always worth it and a great motivation to provide this event year after year. We love being able to see the love of Christ spread throughout the night.”
She noted that it’s a team effort to pull off the event. “This event wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful volunteers and other partnerships within the community,” she shared. “A special thank you to all who contribute to this event whether it be with their time, resources or prayers and encouragement.”
She hopes anyone who is interested will stop by for Light the Night. “We highly encourage people to come out and attend this event,” Heying stated. “Whether they are looking for some good music, tasty treats or a good conversation, we will be here and ready for you. People can expect a safe and inviting atmosphere to either pass through while trick-or-treating or to stay and enjoy for the entire two

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
For more information on Teen Central or Light the Night, contact Heying manheim.org or call
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County,
