Handmade items will shine at Craft Bazaar

Unique handmade items and lots of delicious food will be featured at the annual Craft Bazaar at Pleasant View Communities. Organized by the Pleasant View Auxiliary, the event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

“We have 57 vendors coming,” said Pam Hoffman, a member of the auxiliary. “We have a huge variety of handcrafted items.”

Vendors will sell original art, fabric items, paper crafts, engraved wood pieces, jewelry, candles, soaps and more.

“We have someone who is

making Norwegian sweaters,” Hoffman said. “We have someone doing a modern take on frakturs and someone who creates things out of antique linens. We have

someone who sells live-edge tables. We also have someone who has written a romance novel, and she’ll have her books there.” Pet gifts, wood toys, embroidered

items, gourd art and stained glass will make up some of the other offerings.

A bake sale of items made by Pleasant View residents will also be featured, and a food stand will sell chicken corn soup, barbecue, hot dogs and drinks.

The vendors are a mix of people from the greater community as well as Pleasant View residents, and shoppers will find something for everyone on their holiday list, Hoffman said.

“It’s a great way to get started on your Christmas shopping,” she shared. “We have such a great variety of vendors.”

Proceeds from the bazaar will benefit the Pleasant View Auxiliary. “The purpose of the auxiliary is

Shopping at the Holiday Market on Adele can yield unique gifts and support small businesses at the same time, said Chelsey Harnly, who is organizing the event with Stephanie Rogers. The Holiday Market on Adele will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 Adele Ave., Manheim.

The market will feature more

than 20 vendors, including Amy’s Mixing Bowl, Thirty-One Gifts, PaperPie Learning, Pampered Chef and Mary Kay. Local crafters will sell items including clay earrings, playdough kits, crocheted goods, woodcut items and more.

DLT Farms will sell soup, sandwiches and loaded macaroni and cheese. The White Magnolia Coffee Co. food truck will sell coffee and other drinks.

There exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally.

Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning.

“It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of

development and strategic partnerships. “That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”

For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and

Closet, a (nonprofit organization) in Ephrata,” Harnly said. “They provide items to foster and adoptive families.”

She and Rogers, who both have their own small businesses, began organizing the Holiday Market on Adele eight years ago. “Steph and I started this event because we both were having a hard time getting into other big vendor events, so we figured we would just create our own,” Harnly shared. “A fundraising aspect was super important to us because we wanted to give back, and Unlocked Closet meets such a great need in the foster and adoptive community.”

Rogers encourages everyone to come out for the market, noting, “This is a great event to start your Christmas shopping or just get to know some local businesses. … It’s a great way to support local families and keep our local economy running. I know they all appreciate the support every year.”

The exhibition hall building is handicapped-accessible. Parking is available near the building on Adele Avenue as well as across the street by the pool/softball field.

to provide things for our residents, things that will enhance their lives,” Hoffman stated. “We donate to the Benevolent Care Fund, and we also try to fulfill other requests we receive from residents, whether they live in health care, personal care or independent living.”

Over the years, the bazaar has grown so big, it now occupies multiple locations of the retirement community. Vendors and food will be set up in the community’s main building, with vendors also located in the Town Square North building, outside of Hearth and Harrow restau-

rant. Esther’s Collectibles, a thrift shop on-site, will also participate in the bazaar and will have a variety of items for sale.

Next year, organizers hope to be able to hold the event in the new cultural center, which will be part of an ongoing expansion project at Pleasant View. The Hoffer Farm project is underway at the community. Named for Pleasant View founder Edna Hoffer, the project will bring a variety of new facilities and opportunities to the campus for both residents and community members. The Manheim Community Library will move from its location

in downtown Manheim to the Hoffer Farm, where it will almost double its space. A cultural center will serve as an event space for learning and engagement. Additional plans include creating a teaching kitchen that will be open to the public, a maker space and a child care center. The project will also expand walking trails and other outdoor activities on the property. A capital campaign is currently underway to raise funds for the project, which will be completed in several phases.

In the meantime, Hoffman hopes people will come to the craft bazaar to pick up unique items, enjoy homemade food and support the auxiliary.

“We have really drawn some interesting vendors

to the bazaar this year,” she said. “It’s going to be a really exciting event.”

Parking attendants will be available to direct people at the bazaar. For more information on the event, including previews of items for sale, follow Pleasant View Communities on Facebook. For more information on the Hoffer Farm project, visit https://pleasantview communities.org.

A Memorial Service Honoring Family Members And Friends Who Have Passed On.

Mount Joy Church of God

11:00 AM

As in previous years, this Special Community Memorial Service is open to all members of the community wishing to pay tribute to special people during this holiday season. Everyone is welcome to share this experience and support for one another. If you, or someone you know, would like to have a deceased loved one remembered at this service, please call Jon Sheetz, Andy Dieck, Joshua A. Keith or Joan Rutt at the Sheetz Funeral Home, 717-653-5441. Inform us of the loved one’s name and the approximate number of family members who will be attending the service.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more

“Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.”

An independent, nonprofit regional facility once associated with Franklin & Marshall College, the North Museum of Nature and Science is home to all sorts of interesting exhibits, like a live animal room, a dinosaur hall, rock and mineral collections, a planetarium, a nature gallery, an art gallery and an ornithology collection. It’s a wonderful space to uncover things you didn’t know.

“The North Museum is committed to the community,” said Downs. “We are committed to being an educational resource for everyone in the community. Science is ever changing. We’re not constrained to a fixed number of topics. It

can be anything and everything. It’s living.”

The North Museum hosts more than 35,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster. The North Museum has become a popular destination for field trips and bus trips alike.

“It’s genuinely inquisitive people,” said Downs. “They are people who are passionate about the museum because we have been doing it for so long. When parents bring kids to the museum, it’s an opportunity to explore together. It’s not just mom and dad bringing kids and letting them roam around the museum.”

“For me, the best thing is when I hear the noise of the kids,” Downs continued. “I hear kids teaching each other, discovering things and having a great time. It reminds me of why I do it. I’m with an organization that preserves the past, looks to the future, and we sell education and fun.”

The North Museum, which was established in 1953, employs nine full-time staffers and 12 part-timers. The facility is funded through donations, sponsorships, government grants, admission fees and paid programming.

“I like to call us the Little Museum Who Could,” said Downs. “There is no shortage of big ideas and big accomplishments here. We continue to change and evolve. There’s always something new and fresh to see with us. We partner with so many different organizations throughout the community. We also help bridge the gap between education and industry.”

“We really try to create access for everybody and create opportunities for everyone,” added Downs. “That’s a big part of our mission too.”

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies

Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 18 and up without a prescription

If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores.com/ pages/tgc-vaccines or www .martinsfoods.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines.

Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site.

Fulton Bank receives Freedom Award

Lancaster-based Fulton Bank was recognized as a recipient of the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members.

Fulton Bank team members who accepted the award during a ceremony held at the Pentagon on Aug. 22 were John Glover, head of commercial banking; Lisa Johanning, director of talent management; Lisa DeCoste, senior commercial relationship man -

ager; Natasha Luddington, chief legal officer; and Curt Myers, chief executive officer.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DOD) office, runs the annual award program, which has presented the honor to employers since 1996.

Recipients of the award include small and large private businesses and public sector employers nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization. Award nominations are accepted from all 50 states, GuamCNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.

Fulton Bank is one of only 15 employers nationwide selected to receive the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award this year.

Fall Open House

Pennsylvania Army National Guard Col. Brett Gagnon nominated the Fulton Bank for the Freedom Award for its support of his military career. In nominating the bank for the award, Gagnon stated that corporate executives, managers and co-workers all sent cards, letters and other items to him and unit members during his most recent deployment. Bank personnel also maintained contact with his family, providing gift cards

and support to his wife and children.

Fulton Bank also provides benefits to Guard and Reserve members. Deployed service members receive 52 weeks of differential pay while maintaining family health, retirement and investment benefits.

The bank’s nomination was selected from the 30 nationwide finalists.

Numerous Fulton Bank supervisors have received a Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award and Above and Beyond Awards. They have also attended an ESGR Boss Lift event and awards luncheon for which they received a Pennsylvania ESGR Certificate of Support.

ESGR exists to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DOD.
