Outdoor art blooms in Manheim
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Where can you go to enjoy a variety of free public art? Look no further than Manheim. Murals and other outdoor art pieces are popping up all over town.
“Often art is a voice for anything that words cannot express,” said Heather Lindsey, owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim. “It is meant to move and speak to others in a way they can interpret for themselves. Every town should have beautiful and expressive pieces that allow people to feel through them.”
“Art is a beautiful expression of those that reside here and a reflection of the pride in the community.”
And there’s no shortage of art throughout Manheim. At her own business, at 23 N. Main St., Lindsey has painted the windows with whimsical art. Larger pieces she’s completed include motifs around a shop on the corner of Charlotte and High streets and a mural at a residence at the corner of Hazel Street.
“Specifically in Manheim, a hard-working town with a community that has a heart for the families that live within, art is a beautiful expression of those that reside here and a reflection of the pride in the community,” she said.
At The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., a student recently completed a mural in the walking tunnel on the property. Grahason Lindberg, a junior at Manheim Central High School, created the piece, which depicts
the property’s history. He was joined in the project by friends Katie Zook, Syrus Lubeski, Everett Lindburg, Maykayla Melborne, Hannah Grey and Deacon Weaver.
The mural not only added beauty to the site, but also solved a problem, said Lisa Alcala, who owns The Shack with her husband, Ray.
“The tunnel has always been a target for graffiti, and we’ve wanted to do something in
prime,” she commented. “After Grahason shared his work and passion about art with me, I knew he was the right person to take on the project. He designed it and went to work right away and had it finished by late summer.”
She noted that Grahason’s mural highlights the past and present of the property. “The Shack is located on a property rich in history, and Grahason did a great job bringing it together in the mural,” Lisa stated. “He

It also features the restaurant, which was actually built on the original foundation of one of the pavilions in the park.”
For the Alcalas, the mural offers a way to preserve and highlight the history of the property while

The development of Lancaster County is rooted in agriculture and family living. It’s a past that the Farm and Home Foundation of Lancaster County (FHFLC) wants to honor but not dwell on.
FHFLC seeks to sustain, preserve and support the evolved agricultural industry in Lancaster County. The nonprofit accomplishes its mission by providing a hub for the farming community, implementing programs, fostering relationships and educating youths.
“Agriculture is very important in Lancaster County,” said FHFLC president Steve Spayd. “Lancaster County is still the leading agricultural county in the state. Our farms have gotten larger, and they’ve gotten more technical. Hopefully, at the end of the day, we can say we’ve made progress. I don’t think we’re working harder; we’re working smarter.”
FHFLC, which is directed by a 15-member board, might be best known locally for the Farm and Home Center of Lancaster County, which it operates at 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The spacious building houses seven outside organizations, including the Penn State Agricultural Extension Office of Lancaster County, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency, the Lancaster County Conservation District, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and an agricultural products business.

“Our agricultural community is a very giving community where we come together and learn different things,” said Spayd. “By having a central meeting place, I think it’s been a tremendous benefit to Lancaster County. Our learning is never finished. One of the things we need to keep in mind is, are we passing that knowledge on? There was a need for a hub, and that’s why the foundation was founded.”
FHFLC sponsors a scholarship program for Lancaster County high school students interested in furthering their educations in the fields of agriculture, family living and consumer sciences. Following an application and review process, four-year renewable, $1,000 scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership and financial need.
Since its inception in 1966, the program has awarded 526 scholarships totaling over $740,000. The scholarship program is funded through the Elmer L. Esbenshade Trust and FHFLC.
“I think the scholarship program is a very important aspect of Farm and Home Foundation because we want to encourage young people to further their educations,” said Spayd. “I think they’re kids who are motivated to learn more and who have a hunger for knowledge. Book knowledge and hands-on knowledge have to go together. The saying ‘it takes a community to raise a family’ is so true. I don’t think you could put a price tag on the whole thing.”

“I don’t know that the general public knows about us,” said Spayd. “Maybe those in the local agricultural community do. I don’t think people realize the availability of programs for them there and what the foundation has to offer. We’d like to make more people interested in how their food is being produced and where their food is coming from. So many people think food comes from the grocery store, and they don’t know anything beyond that.”

Large murals have also been completed in town at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., and on the side of a building at 38 S. Main St., both installed by Horst Arts. The latter, a project of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce, depicts elements of Manheim’s history, including glassblowing.
“We were able to work with the Chamber in securing funds for the large mural they completed,” said Lindsey, who serves on the Chamber board. “This may inspire other artists in other communities to see if there are grants and funds - even business sponsorsthat would help fund art, providing income to small business artists while bringing joy and inspiration to
their communities. Maybe seeing the art popping up around our small town will inspire other artists and local organizations to work together in bringing creativity and inspiration to their communities.”
Murals and the other pieces contribute significantly to the spirit of a small town, Lindsey said. “These pieces of art bring moments of joy and smiles to those passing through, even by car. Manheim is often a drive-through town,” she said. “We encourage those within the community and those traveling through to take a few moments and tour the art, letting it speak to and inspire them, maybe even sparking a passion in them to pursue a form of art themselves.”

Memorial Organ Recital on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster.
Robert C. Horton will perform selections by Franz Liszt and Jehan Alain plus an improvisation on a given melody. The organ
is a two-manual, 27-rank Dobson Op. 83 pipe organ from 2006. A freewill offering will be received to support future Fritsch Memorial Organ Recitals.
Horton serves as a technician with Brunner & Associates, an organ builder in Silver Spring. He previously served as interim chapel organist at Duke University and, from 2005 to 2008, he served as director of keyboard studies at Dordt College, now Dordt University, where he taught organ, history, and solfege and directed the college jazz band. Horton holds degrees from Cornell University, Northwestern University, and the University of Kansas. As a Fulbright scholar, he studied at the Conservatoire National de Région in Toulouse, France. membership includes avid horticulturists and plant enthusiasts from across the county, the group holds its regular meetings at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Meetings take place on the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and each meeting features a topic related to horticulture. During meetings, members display items such as floral arrangements, potted plants and paintings of garden landscapes, club’s leadership provides updates on upcoming field trips and garden tours. Each meeting includes a presentation from a guest speaker centered around the theme of the month.
In addition to the resources available to the Lancaster County Garden Club’s members and visitors from the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips. Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president,
said that the comradery between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and visiting their gardens,” Ruth added.
Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and they tend to 16 acres of land near Millersville. “We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.
The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as the Men’s Garden Club until 2009. Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.
Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming,
agriculture programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture. After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.
“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book encourages young readers to become environmental stewards, learn how to care for a garden, understand a plant life cycle, and discover the power of pollinators and the importance of composting.
To register as a volunteer reader by Friday, Dec. 13, or to learn more, visit www.pfbfriends.com/ ag-literacy-week/.
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. The foundation has been educating the public and promoting agriculture since its inception in 1986. To learn more about foundation programs, go to www.pfbfriends.com.
