Twin Valley Student Collecting Pop Tops For Charity BY FRANCINE FULTON
aille McNicholas, 14, an eighth-grade student at Twin Valley Middle School, is collecting aluminum pop tops from canned soda and other canned beverages as part of a national service project associated with her title as Miss Northeast Jr. High United States 2021. All money generated by the pop top collection will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Currently, donation bins for the pop tops are located at Goin’ Postal and AJ’s Family Pizza, both located in the Morgantown Crossings shopping center on Route 23 near Walmart. Those with large quantities of pop tops can arrange for pickup by contacting Maille at mailles.mission@gmail.com. Maille will collect donations
“I love being able to walk (the stage) and dress up but if you can’t do anything with (the title), what is the point?” Mallie said. and then all of us will take a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House in central Pennsylvania to present them,” Maille explained. through July, when the national pageant will be held. The pageant is scheduled to take place from Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, at Hershey Lodge in Hershey. “During the course of national pageant week, they will take all the contestants’ tabs and weigh them,
volunteers take the tabs to a recycling center, where they are paid cash for the aluminum. Maille has competed in pageants since the age of 8. For this title, she participated virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We applied, sent a resume, a head shot and my platform statement,” she said. “(After I won), they mailed us the sash and the crown.” Maille noted that she was particularly interested in this pageant because it is based on community service. “I love being able to walk (the stage) and dress up but if you can’t do anything with (the title), what is the point?” Mallie said. Maille was diagnosed with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS), a rare vascular condition involving a port wine stain, which is a type of birthmark, and other symptoms. She said the title gives her the ability to represent individuals with vascular birthmarks and promote her platform, Maille’s Mission. “The mission is to spread awareness about (KTS) and raise money for the Vascular Birthmark Foundation,” said Maille, who is the global ambassador for the foundation. “(The) program means a lot to me.” For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/mailles.mission. The condition has not stopped Maille from pursuing her dance hobby. She is a national dance champion and enjoys aerial dance with silks and the trapeze. “I really want to work at Disney World as a performer,” she said of her future career plans. “I have wanted to work there since I was young. Disney is one of my favorite places to go.” For more information about Maille and her community service projects, including the pop top collection, readers may visit www.facebook.com/miss northeastjrhighunitedstates2021.

David’s Drive Provides Holiday Gifts To Veterans BY FRANCINE FULTON
For the past nine years, David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, has held a Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, where volunteers wrapped 1,000 gift boxes containing personal care items, snacks and more that were distributed to veterans. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, DD831 was forced to cancel this year’s event. Instead,
the charity collected gifts that were distributed by VA staff members to homebound veterans and those who reside at the VA center, as well as to veterans who are part of the VA’s homeless outreach program. “What we were forced to do this year was buy products (and) send them to the VA and they distributed them to veterans,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. “Because of COVID ... we (could) not put (our volunteers) at risk, so all items were presented to veterans with the highest regard for safety.” See David’s Drive pg 3
Volunteers with David’s Drive 831 helped at a previous year’s Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza. While this year’s event was canceled, the charity was still able to provide Christmas gifts to veterans.

Animal House Project Continues To Serve Pet Owners In Need BY FRANCINE FULTON
With a challenging 2020 ending and a new year beginning, the Animal House Project dba Chester County Pet Food Pantry is looking forward to continuing to serve pet owners in need in 2021. In her annual Christmas letter, board president MaryBeth Yannessa thanked the volunteers who worked at the pantry during distribution days and donated to the organization financially or with pet food, as well as those who held pet food drives during the year. All these efforts help fulfill the charity’s mission, which is to help families keep pets at home and out of shelters by providing donated pet food and pet care services. “Volunteers provided countless hours of their time to pick up donations, drive to larger donors, complete administrative functions and volunteer at the Pet Expo and our second annual golf tournament, as well as at Pottstown Pet Food Pantry,” Yannessa wrote “Whether you donate financially - a little or a lot. Whether you provide in-kind donations or host pet food drives. Whether you volunteer - one or 100 hours. Whether you help at our events or at pantry. Whatever the case, we thank you.” Yannessa also announced that a new program will be offered in 2021. “We received a grant from the (Philadelphia) Phillies Charities that will be used to fund a new program - a low-cost veterinary grant program so that we may offer grants to help offset the medical needs of the companion See Animal House pg 5

David’s Drive from pg 1 Turner explained that homebound veterans living in the community received a tin of cookies. Some of the cookies were donated by Royal Dansk. “I reached out to Royal Dansk in October to purchase tins of cookies as a comfort item for veterans during the holidays,” said Turner. “(On Dec. 10), David’s Drive 831 received a delivery from Denmark, postage paid - a 334pound skid with 300 tins of Royal Dansk Danish Butter Cookies. A donation from Royal Dansk (helped) us say thank you to veterans for their service.” Inpatients living on the VA campus got a canteen book, which is a coupon book that they can use to purchase items in the VA canteen. Walmart gift cards were given out to veterans in the HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development VA Support Housing) program. Community members were invited to write personal cards or letters to be included with the gifts. Turner reported that DD831 received hundreds of handmade cards from local residents, Girl Scout troops and others, including residents of The Villages at Hillview in Coatesville. Local businesses donated items and monetary gifts, and American Legion Riders 662 of New Holland provided donations of food and cards and chocolate donated by Godiva. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the VA Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started

the all-volunteer DD831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. Turner pointed out that the charity has remained active during the coronavirus pandemic. It provided nonperishable food items to local at-risk veterans and donated vacuum cleaners and microwaves for veterans in the HUD-VASH program. Most recently, DD831 purchased 50 electric razors and chargers for veterans living in the VA’s Community Living Center. For more information about DD831 or to make a donation, readers may visit www.dd831.org or www.facebook.com/davids.drive.
Community members and groups, including local Girl Scout troops, provided hundreds of handmade greeting cards and thank you letters to David’s Drive 831, which included them in gifts presented to veterans this holiday season.

Animal House from pg 2 pets that we feed,” she explained. “In addition, we are now actively looking for additional donations to add to the Phillies grant to help offset the costs. In the beginning, we will be offering the grant to pantry clients, and (we) hope (that) with more monetary donations, we can expand to nonpantry clients.” Yannessa noted that the pantry is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. Pet food distributions take place at the pantry’s location in North Coventry Township at 1055 S. Hanover St., Pottstown, on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Because of the pandemic, the distribution is now a drivethrough format. In addition, an outdoor bin is located at the site for
those who would like to drop off donations of dog and cat food. In the holiday letter, Yannessa also noted how important it is for families to be able to keep their companion pets. “Pets are our family. They give us unconditional love and companionship,” Yannessa stated. “They comfort us when we are sick and alone. They nudge us to take them for walks even though we may be tired, but it is good for our health. They defeat loneliness for many of our seniors and bring comfort to our returning military veterans that suffer from PTSD. Animals have the magical ability to bring out the best in us as human beings.” For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www. animalhouseproject.org or www.facebook.com/AnimalHouse Project1, call 484-558-0467 or email

As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final deci-

To register, readers may visit http://bit.ly/Jan21Caregiver or call 800-272-3900. Readers may contact Melissa Oley at 484-755-3228 or moley@ heritagegh.com to learn more about the group.
GVWA To Present Nature Programs Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) invites the public to get outside this winter and engage with nature by joining staff members during one or more outdoor programs. Little Wonders Nature Classes will resume for children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers on the following Tuesdays: Jan. 19, Winter Science; Jan. 26, Eyes on Owl; Feb. 2, Hibernation Happens; Feb. 9, Animal Builders; Feb. 16, Discover the Meadow; and March 2, Outdoor Art.
Children and caregivers may attend one or more of the programs, with two time frames to choose from, 10 to 11 a.m. or 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Each class will include a themebased nature walk with age-appropriate activities, a story and a craft “to-go” for more fun at home. Adults and children age 6 and up are invited to discover the outdoors after dark through educator-led night hikes in which participants will explore the trails in search of nocturnal animal activity, enjoy the
night sky and test their own senses after dark. Two hikes will be offered, a Full Moon Night Hike and Campfire on Friday, Jan. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with an inclement weather date of Friday, Feb. 5, and a Nocturnal Animal Hike on Saturday, March 13, from 8 to 9:30 p.m., with an inclement weather date of Saturday, March 20. Registration is required for all programs, which will be held at Welkinweir, GVWA’s 224-acre headquarters located at 1368 Prizer
Road, Pottstown, in East Nantmeal Township. All programs are entirely outdoors, have a limited number of participants, and require face masks for all participants. For further details, including fee information and to register, readers may email dwhite@greenvalleys.org or call 610-469-8646. Welkinweir is open to the public on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.greenvalleys.org.

Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role.
