GSV Half/10K Introduces New Race Director Allison Cuthie Will Take Over 2021 Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

Among the Twin Valley High School FFA stuedents who collected Christmas trees for recycling on Jan. 9 were (from left) Seth Kochel, Alexis Cochran, Austin Hittle, Emma Mae Jones and Anna Posh.

Twin Valley High School FFA members, with the help of family members, collected Christmas tees from the community and brought the trees back to the high school for the wildlife and to create mulch.

Twin Valley FFA Makes Good Use Of Recycled Christmas Trees BY FRANCINE FULTON

lthough the pandemic has canceled many of their community service projects, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) FFA were able to once again hold their Christmas tree recycling program. As part of the annual event, FFA members collected trees from the community and brought the trees back to the high school for the wildlife, as well as to create mulch. “Twin Valley FFA has been doing this (activity) for over 30 years. It was started by my predecessor Ron Frederick,” explained current FFA adviser Harold Dietrich. The community was invited to drop off their Christmas trees at two locations in Robeson Township. “We collected at Robeson Elementary (Center) and at Plow Farms tree farm,” Dietrich pointed out. “Most of the trees collected at the Robeson Elementary (Center) probably came from Robeson Township;

all been curtailed by the pandemic, including crafting and gardening with the senior residents of the Heritage at Green Hills in Shillington. Career Development Events (CDEs), which are contests where members compete to test their skills learned through agricultural education instruction, have also been postponed or canceled. “We have not been able to do any face-to-face community service activities. We have not been able to do CDEs,” noted Dietrich. “For all recreational chapter activities we must follow COVID guidelines masks, (6 feet of) social distancing and no food or snacks. We also are not allowed any field trips or guests as part of the COVID restrictions. It has been very difficult to plan and execute FFA activities, because so much of what we do involves interactions with other people.” For more information about the TVHS FFA, readers may visit www.tvffa.theaet.com or join the Twin Valley FFA Facebook group.

however trees collected from Plow Farms could come from anywhere, but likely were purchased at Plow Farms.” On Jan. 9, 50 trees were collected from the drop-off stations and brought back to the school by FFA students with the help of adult volunteers, including students’ parents and grandparents. “The trees were placed in the school district’s woodlot, where they serve as winter habitat for birds and small mammals such as rabbits or squirrels,” Dietrich explained. “In the spring, the trees will be chipped for mulch to be used in the FFA garden at the high school.” Dietrich said that the FFA has not seen an increase in number of trees collected. However, the number of trees collected did decrease two years ago with the introduction of the spotted lanternfly. “(The number) has not gone back up since,” said Dietrich. The TVHS FFA generally takes part in many activities, which have

Holding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than

a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,” recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist

Maille McNicholas, 14, an eighth-grade student at Twin Valley Middle School, is collecting aluminum pop tops from canned soda and other canned beverages as part of a national service project associated with her title as Miss Northeast Jr. High United States 2021. All money generated by the pop top collection will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Currently, donation bins for the pop tops are located at Goin’ Postal and AJ’s Family Pizza, both located in the Morgantown Crossings shopping center on Route 23 near Walmart. Those with large quantities of pop tops can arrange for pickup by contacting Maille at mailles.mission@gmail.com. Maille will collect donations through July, when the national pageant will be held. The pageant is scheduled to take place from Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, at Hershey Lodge in Hershey. “During the course of national pageant week, they will take all the contestants’ tabs and weigh them, and then all of us will take a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House in central Pennsylvania to present them,” Maille explained. According to Ronald McDonald House Charities, volunteers take the tabs to a recycling center, where they are paid cash for the aluminum. Maille has competed in pageants since the age of 8. For this title, she participated virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We applied, sent a resume, a head shot and my

platform statement,” she said. “(After I won), they mailed us the sash and the crown.” Maille noted that she was particularly interested in this pageant because it is based on community service. “I love being able to walk (the stage) and dress up but if you can’t do anything with (the title), what is the point?” Maille said. Maille was diagnosed with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS), a rare vascular condition involving a port wine stain, which is a type of birthmark, and other symptoms. She said the title gives her the ability to represent individuals with vascular birthmarks and promote her platform, Maille’s Mission. “The mission is to spread awareness about (KTS) and raise money for the Vascular Birthmark Foundation,” said Maille, who is the global ambassador for the foundation. “(The) program means a lot to me.” For more information, readers may visit www.face book.com/mailles.mission. The condition has not stopped Maille from pursuing her dance hobby. She is a national dance champion and enjoys aerial dance with silks and the trapeze. “I really want to work at Disney World as a performer,” she said of her future career plans. “I have wanted to work there since I was young. Disney is one of my favorite places to go.” For more information about Maille and her community service projects, including the pop top collection, readers may visit www.facebook.com/missnorth eastjrhighunitedstates2021.

Monday, Jan. 25; Wednesday, Jan. 27; and Thursday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. Since the class is virtual, attendees may dress comfortably and feel free to enjoy their own snacks and beverages at home. Throughout the pandemic and even during the stay-athome order, VEP continued to provide one-to-one English language classes, as well as information on understanding American culture, to adult learners, while continuing to offer services and support to its students and tutors. The first virtual tutor training was held in September. “Basically, we teach the same methods and techniques for teaching ESL students but modified in a way that is adaptable to teaching virtually, said Rachel Van Tassel, VEP program director, when explaining the virtual training. “Working virtually with a student with the English language barrier is challenging because you don’t

have the textbook right next to you and you don’t have that high touch anymore. You need to make sure your materials, methods and techniques are up to par so the students can still acquire the language. Prior teaching experience or fluency in a language other than English is not required to become a tutor. “It’s all about life experiences. We all come from different backgrounds, but we all have something to teach one another. It’s very rewarding, said Van Tassel. “It’s not just one-way. (They) are learning from each other. Tutors and students are asked to make a yearlong commitment to the program. “(Student/tutor pairs) are meeting for three hours a week, and we suggest they split that into two one-and-a-half hour sessions, Van Tassel said, adding, “We have pairs going way beyond the one-year mark. It’s not a classroom. They are building a personal relationship with each other.

Right now, there is a waiting list of students in need of tutors. “We consistently have upwards of 100 students waiting on tutors, Van Tassel said, noting that references and background checks are conducted before tutors are matched with students. “We still match people based on geographical location in the event they do want to meet outside for coffee. We serve all of the Chester County, (including) students who live or work in Chester County. A fee will be charged to participate in the upcoming virtual training. Attendees will be asked to pick up a hard-copy tutor training manual at the VEP office in West Chester prior to the session. Information about pickup dates will be provided after registration. To register, readers may visit www.volunteerenglish.org. More information about the program is available at the website and by visiting www.face book.com/VolunteerEng or calling 610-918-8222.

Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events, said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday, March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race, she added. Goats raised at Amazing Acres Goat Dairy in Elverson feasted on Christmas trees this past holiday season. BY FRANCINE FULTON

While many people are sad to see their live trees come down after Christmas, there is one group that cannot wait for the end of the holiday season - goats. According to local goat farmer Lynne Reid of Amazing Acres Goat Dairy in Elverson, goats love eating all parts of the tree from the needles to the branches. “Goats will eat the needles, finer branches and even the bark of Christmas trees, she said. “Pine needles provide trace nutrients, minerals and forage. There are claims that pine trees act as a natural dewormer. While trees are no longer being accepted at the farm,

Reid reported that about 30 local residents dropped their live Christmas trees for the goats to enjoy in December. “Goats enjoy variety in their diets, so fresh, green pine branches in the dead of winter gives them something novel to eat during a time when the majority of their diet is hay, she said. She added that the goats are also given old pumpkins after Halloween. Another time that the goats receive extra treats to eat is during their regular outings. “I take them out on walks where they can eat old grass and vines in the forest, Reid explained. “In the perimeter of our property, we have a wooded area. The virtual Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention (MAFVC) Spanish session will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. It will be led by Mario Miranda Sazo, Cornell Extension, and Sergio Rosario and Silvia Rosario, coowners of Rosario Brothers. This program is supported by a Penn State Extension Science to Practice Grant. Details on registering for the virtual MAFVC session are available at www.mafvc.org.

Miranda will discuss “Keys to Success in Planting, Establishing, and Tree Training in Orchards During the First Year.” Miranda is a fruit Extension specialist with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Lake Ontario Fruit Program. In this position, he manages a series of research and educational projects aimed at solving practical fruit production problems in order to increase the profitability of the state’s fruit industry. His program is largely field-oriented and of an applied nature with significant Extension outreach. He works in nine areas to accomplish his goals: orchard systems, rootstocks, tree nursery production, maximum new tree growth, crop load and canopy management, irrigation/fertigation/soil nutrient management, orchard mechanization for higher labor efficiency, Spanish-speaking training, and strategic thinking and innovation for future adoption of digital agriculture technologies. Before Miranda joined the Cornell Extension team, he worked as a product development manager for BASF in Latin America and Harris Moran Seed Company in California, and he managed the IR-4 field residue program at the Department of Horticulture, Cornell University. earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy and business and a Master of Science in horticulture and agronomy from University of California, Davis. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in nutrition physiology and management at Cornell University. In an interactive presentation titled “Sergio and Silvia The Rosario Team,” the Rosarios will share their professional journey as Latino/Hispanic agriculture entrepreneurs in western New York. They will also provide managerial and workforce development tips for creating efficient and effective teams. Their eldest son, Sergio Jr., who is poised to assume future management of the business, will also join the webinar discussion. Originally from the State of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, the Rosarios began their jour-

ney as a married couple more than 20 years ago. They are graduates of the 2019 Cornell Small Farms program for bilingual professional development, titled the Master Class program. In this program, Latino/a farm business owners, managers, and employees share their collective knowledge while building Spanish-speaking networks within the region. Before coming to New York, the couple worked in tomato fields in Florida for three years. In 2000, Sergio and Silvia moved to western New York to work for Lamont Fruit Farms, where they learned cutting-edge practices for high-density apple production. They started their custom grafting and tree pruning business in 2015, and they now also produce trees for their own nursery.

Hospital Posts Change Of Services Brandywine Hospital Tower Health reminds community members to call 911 if they are experiencing symptoms of heart attack. EMS can begin the immediate life-saving care needed while the patient is being transported to the hospital. Tower Health announced that it permanently closed cardiac catherization services at Brandywine Hospital on Dec. 11. This action will allow the hospital to focus resources on other areas of clinical strength and community need. If a patient arrives at the emergency department with heart attack symptoms, he or she will be stabilized and TowerDIRECT will coordinate transfer to either Phoenixville Hospital or Reading Hospital, both of which have much larger cardiac catheterization programs. Both Phoenixville and Reading have been recognized by the American Heart Association and the Joint Commission for their outstanding quality and timely care of patients with heart attacks. A heart attack happens when a blood vessel supporting the heart is blocked. When the heart does not receive blood, it causes the muscle to die. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent death or prevent permanent damage to the heart. Symptoms of a heart attack include pain or discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back; pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or

was bestowed upon Sonya Beltran and her family, owner-operators of First Generation Farms. The Beltran family grows white and cremini mushrooms for restaurant and food service customers up and down the East Coast. Sonya was initially nominated on her own for the award by the American Mushroom Institute for excellence as a mushroom grower and industry advocate. Upon receiving notice of the nomination, she requested that her family also be recognized. Sonya’s parents, Daniel and Maria Beltran, came to the area from Jalisco, Mexico, in 1980. Daniel worked his way up through the mushroom industry until he was able to buy his own mushroom houses and start the business now known as First Generation Farms and Masda Mushrooms. The Beltrans’ farm now encompasses over 50 growing rooms with an average production of about 11 million pounds of fresh mushrooms a year. Sonya, the eldest of Daniel and Maria’s three children, officially joined the business eight years ago and is currently the director of operations, overseeing worker safety, product marketing and sales. Although the pandemic has been challenging for the food service supply chain, Sonya said that worker safety has always been the business’s top priority. To that end, she partnered with La Comunidad Hispana to offer voluntary on-site COVID-19 testing and has worked with employees

In addition to her work on the farm, Sonya serves as the vice chair of the Mushroom Council, the national mushroom trade promotion group geared toward expanding the consumer market for fresh mushrooms. In a typical year, the Chester County commissioners and Ag Council present the Duncan Allison Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture to an individual who has positively promoted, made significant contributions to, or provided exceptional services for the county’s farming community. Treatment Courts Offer Assistance Since 2009, Pennsylvania’s Veterans Treatment Courts have been assisting veterans who are charged with crimes and are struggling with addiction, mental illness, or other co-occurring disorders. Veterans Treatment Court participants appear before a judge on a regular basis, receive support and guidance from veteran mentors, and receive treatment to address underlying problems often caused by post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2019, 189 veterans graduated from this specialty court. In Pennsylvania, 51 of 67 counties currently have treatment courts (Drug, DUI, Mental Health, and/or Veterans Treatment Court) in which veterans can participate if they meet the eligibility criteria. Additionally, all justice-involved veterans are entitled to a Veteran Justice Outreach (VJO) program specialist to help them navigate the Veterans Affairs system and get them connected with services available to them. Giant To Offer Virtual Cooking Classes

The Chester County commissioners and members of the Chester County COVID-19 Business Task Force recently announced updates to the Restore Chester County website, introduced earlier this year to support businesses, organizations and residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its launch in May, www.restorechestercounty.org has provided COVID-19 public health and safety guidance for Chester County’s more than 15,000 businesses and over 525,000 residents, including a checklist for 21 industry sectors on how to reopen and remain open. The website has also provided resources for businesses and organizations to obtain personal protective

equipment. Now, Restore Chester County’s updates will include carefully curated strategic actions, once again broken down into 21 industry sectors. Visitors to the aforementioned website will be presented with overall action steps, with links to Chester County’s current economic conditions, business practices and industry support. From there, visitors can select one of the 21 categories to learn more about the specific industry’s action steps, as well as actions that have worked for other similar businesses. The 21 industry sectors identified on the Restore Chester County website range from agriculture, office settings, restaurants, personal

care and retail to schools, nonprofits, religious organizations, child care and sports and recreation. Businesses and organizations that would also like to share innovative ways that they have navigated COVID-19 are invited to submit their stories by emailing business@chesco.org. Chester County businesses and residents are also encouraged to share their successful experiences, tips and insights on social media using the hashtag #RestoreChesCo. In addition to the ongoing review and update of the Restore Chester County website, Chester County’s COVID19 Business Task Force is focusing on the long-term development of Chester County’s economic recovery strategy.
